Great service and friendly staff with excellent food. Lovely walks across the moors and a warm winter welcome with a roaring fire. Unfortunately atmosphere was slightly off due to an idiot. I'm glad to say that Steve the landlord dealt with it in short thrift.... Great place

The waitress was lovely and the service was excellent, the food was generally homemade and good quality. The problem was with dessert; I ordered the apple pie and the waitress asked if I'd like it hot or cold. I ordered 'hot apple pie' with cream. When it arrived the pastry looked very white rather than golden brown. I tasted it and found the pastry to be soggy like putty. It also tasted like raw flour so I sent it back. The landlord put th apple pie on my bill so I explained that I had sent it back and felt I shouldn't be charged for it. The landlord became angry and said 'nobody else had complained about his apple pie'. He then marched into the kitchen and came back with the whole pie and barked 'what's wrong with that' at me. I asked if my slice of apple pie had been reheated in the microwave and he snapped ' Of course, how else do you expect it to be warmed up'. This altercation ruined the dining experience so I would not recommend this pub for food purely based on the nasty attitude of the landlord. In the restaurant business and any chef will say that when pastry is microwaved to reheat it, it's ruined. I would of expected the kitchen staff at the Lower Royal George to know that fact. Perhaps they could invest in a 'Pie Warmer' to avoid a reoccurrence of such an easy to resolve mistake. The landlord could also improve his attitude to customer service and check out consumer rights.

I love this pub. Some might say it's outdated or old. Personally I think that's what give it its charm, it hasn't changed since I was a teenager. It's cozy with real fires. Not the electric rubbish. The food is awesome, the landlord is a character. I've seen reviews that say he is rude.utter rubbish He's a yorkshire man straight talking. We celebrated my birthday here, the food is amazing the deep fried black pudding is something I've never had, but will definitely be back for some more delicious. Reasonable prices home cooked food with quality ingredients.

Just spent a week in Yorkshire and wish we had discovered the LRG earlier. The home cooked food was absolutely gorgeous, with very generous portions. The beer was equally as good, especially the real ales. If you are looking for a traditional Yorkshire pub, with good food, beer and prices to match, the Lower Royal George ticks all the boxes.

Stopped at the Lower Royal George Inn for Sunday lunch on our way back to our hotel. It looked a bit run down, but it was getting late and we thought we would eat there. What a mistake, the Sunday roast was disgusting. The cabbage and carrots were watery and tasteless, the mashed potato was dry and tasteless, the roast potatoes looked like Aunt Bessie’s frozen variety and the Yorkshire pudding also looked like the frozen type. The meat, beef and pork looked like it was bought in ready sliced, which is why no crackling was available. If you want a decent Sunday lunch, keep going and find somewhere where it’s not all frozen and warmed up in a microwave.

Trading in the 19th century. Don't know how in this day and age a restaurant refuses card payments and only accepts cash. Just ludicrous. At least they advertised it on the front door, so we didn't even make it inside.

Called in for a late Sunday lunch. Only two other customers in when we arrived around 5pm. Whilst we sat "admiring" the weird late 80's decor we could hear the ping of our meal being prepared! We should have left. Our meal arrived.....roast potatoes that had been re heated so much that they contained grease and no potato?? Lumpy gravy, part warmed mash.....when the staff came to collect our plates and asked the usual "was everything alright"? I said that no it wasn't and in particular the roast potatoes were disgusting. His response was would I like to see the dessert menu??? We declined and left never to return!

My Wife and I enjoyed a most enjoyable meal here yesterday evening. As the food is not pre-cooked you should be prepared to wait maybe half an hour for it to arrive but, believe me,it is worth waiting for. My Wife had a fish dish for her main course and I had a Gammon Steak. Both were cooked to perfection and the portions were generous. I note a previous review was critical of Steve, the Landlord and other staff members but I found the Landlord to be polite and attentive and the young lady who served our food could not be faulted. As far as pub grub goes this place takes some beating - Well prepared food at a reasonable price. Another good point is that they have a fairly good selection of bottles of wine again at a reasonable price. We will return.

Service was good, however I was disappointed with the food. We ordered a TAWA and with in 5 minutes it was served which we were very surprised. Starters were not fresh at all, very chewy and no taste at all. Donner was burned and saturated in oil. Curry was spicy but tasted nice.

Came here to cheer a friend up who was struggling with a few issues. Had a great time and the food was fabulous. The lady who served us (sorry I can't remember the name) was brilliant even if she did serve my friend an energy drink at breakfast ( that was funny)

Something tempted me to pop in to Meson La Pepa last Saturday lunchtime. I was the only person dining to start with but it quickly got busy. Three very good portions of tapas: tortilla, patatas bravas and tostada de queso de cabra. Fast; friendly service; excellent price - £13. Money very well spent and a great introduction to Huddersfield.
