Read some mixed reviews on here for this place. Tried it tonight bought 2 fish suppers. Fish fried fresh for my order it was absolutely first class. Good size portion and great quality. Chips are real chip shop chunky types, not at all greasy. Best fish and chips I’ve had in ages

Fish was small, chips were wedges, full of grease and only part cooked. So greasy I was unable to eat this.

First impressions were that this was a proper old fashioned chip shop that hadn’t changed decor in 50 years, i found this quaint however the only reason I put 2 stars is because the fish was ok but it was very small. The chips were inedible, everything was so greasy, the chips were more like wedges and were actually chewy, i kid you not. In the time from buying it and eating it the boxes were soggy from the grease, I’ve never seen that ever. I paid Just under £18 for 2 fish suppers which was a complete waste of money as nearly all of it went in the bin. Very very disappointed.

Recently moved to the area and very confused by the reviews on here. Really nice food with thick cut chips at a sensible price - at first wondered if it was just us that didn't agree with the reviews but have visited with several friends and family and all very much enjoyed it. A bit quirky inside but that's part of the charm I guess. Whatever it was like in the past it is certainly a decent spot to visit for a chippy now!

First time there after moving to the area a few months ago. The staff were very polite & friendly, which was refreshing! The chips were actually very good & even looked handcut, BUT the chipsteak was awful. The batter was 'flat', tough, overcooked to deep brown, and very, Very greasy. Such a shame 🙁. I'd go back for the chips as they were good, but certainly nothing battered 🙁.

Some very mean comments on here about this little long standing chippie. Tonight we had a haddock supper, Haggis supper, steak pie supper and garlic mushrooms. Very good indeed, huge portions, clean establishment, and friendly polite staff. I think the fact that they have been serving this community for so long speaks for itself. Well done LC.

Apparently they are using Red Salt in the chipper, an American invention it includes Paprika. There is no notice anywhere that they are doing this. BE CAREFUL.

Im more than annoyed, I am seriously angry and concerned about this low standard of this Chip Shop. What they actually served me could have 'killed' me and this could have been my last supper as I have potentially fatal food allergies Never been so disappointed in a chip shop and its unfriendly staff in all my days. Ive also never left inclined to leave any negative reviews on Tripadvisor ever before in my life... In fact Ive never even used this trip advisor before... But people need to know just how awful this chipper is. Saturday 8th of May I visited Lournie Chipper after phoning in an order - I was expecting my order to be ready for me by the time I arrived. They hadn't even started cooking it when I made the 20 minute journey from my house to the chip shop. As I paid for it, I was asked if I wanted salt and vinegar on the food. To which I replied just salt please... Never in the history of visiting fish and chip shops have I ever been served red salt on my supper. Good thing I spotted it because I have a potentially fatal food allergy to Paprika (which is in the red salt) and this could have resulted in anaphylactic reaction and a visit to Accident and Emergency for me. Never going back to this chip shop ever again. Unfriendly staff and no food allergy safety and they certainly did not warn me it was red salt. (which is essentially a spice not a salt) This is the Scotland - we don't put Red Salt or American Spice all over our fish and chips... I asked for salt and thats is not what I got. Im just glad I am still alive to tell the tale. Incidentally we have visited this chip shop before early this year around March time.. Dates are unclear.. We only visited him because our usual chipper was closed... I am now wondering if he did the same then and added red salt to my March 2021 Order too ....because I became very ill. I mean Extremely ill throughout the month of March and April and experienced symptoms of Anaphylaxis reaction. See photo of my swollen face I have included from April. Anyway zero out of 5

We were staying in a holiday cottage nearby for the long weekend and fancied fish and chips one night. What should have been a red flag was when myself and my boyfriend walked in and asked for “fish & chips ‘x’ times” and were met with the response “we don’t have any fish”. After rejigging our parties order, we ordered and spent the next 55minutes waiting in the shop, watching other people come in, order, collect and leave in a fraction that time. Now, I work in catering and I can appreciate how annoying it is when someone comes in out of the blue and puts in a big order; but 55minutes for sausages, chips and a pizza is ridiculous. I can only assume that the staff were growing the potatoes to order out the back. When we finally got our order, the chips were practically swimming and the pizza tasted like it had been run over by a truck. It came as no surprise that myself and my boyfriend were both very ill the next day, but I remain baffled as to how that can result from a pizza and chips. The one plus I can draw from the whole experience was that the girl on the counter was delightful. Considering this was the only chippy was a considerable distance, that I could find, I was amazed that the food was so bad and took so long, though I suppose having a relatively captive audience means you can do what you like and still remain in business.

Horrible, greasy, expensive and inedible, never ever ever again ! It was a poor decision to give another go and a reminder as to why we usually travel 7 miles when we want a chippy. Felt so disgusted after eating a portion of it, rest thrown in to coal fire ! Certainly brought the fire back to life... yuk

They might not be in the nicest building, and their chips look wider than most, but their food tastes good. We usually choose their haddock and chips and their burgers. (Get the 100% steak Aberdeen Angus ones.) The staff are nice too. Reasonably priced as takeaways go.

We had a chipper from here for tea and it was absolutely vile. The chips weren’t fully cooked and were downright odd. The bartered sausage wasn’t properly bartered, it was soggy and bland. The shop itself was very un clean and, in fact I was considering walking out again but decided I would give it the benefit of the doubt. The decor is cluttered and full of dusk. Floor was filthy, drinks fridge unclean and appeared to be leaking. The staff were ignorant except for the young girl serving who was very polite. A male member of staff was very rude to her and called her “stupid” when she went through the back. I will never eat here again and definitely won’t be recommending it. I would rather travel to Stonehaven given I’m in two mind whether to phone environmental health! stay clear!!

Chips are really odd from this chippy, one would hope they could at least get chips right. I would agree with previous reviews about value for money, I usually drive to Stonehaven to get a decent chipper, I will continue to do so! Food is very greasy and chips are not good! I don’t think I’ll be back despite the close proximity of this takeaway!

Chips are really odd.. they are really big and flat, they don't taste too great either and the battered fish.. it was really small and had awful thin dark brown greasy batter and was completely inedible. Would much rather recommend heading to Stonehaven as there are a couple of good quality chip shops there, The Bay is superb and second to that would be The Carron. Don't waste your time at this one!!

As a chipper....... it does the job. I don't think they offer anything particularly special but i have never had a bad experience. Stopped by on a Friday afternoon en route to visit family. Ordered two portions of chips- with sides of cheese, gravy and curry sauce. Had to leave to get more money- was flabbergasted to be charged £8.50. The portions were tiny; when I questioned if this was regular size (to be told it was small), I genuinely laughed in disbelief. The owner told me to "Leave out the dramatics". Hilariously arrogant owner- £1.50 for a few strands of grated cheese...photo beneath of a £5 meal.

Travelling between Dundee and Aberdeen? Do yourself a favour and visit this great little "chipper". Turn off the A90 into the village of Laurencekirk - be a bit careful as the main street is quite narrow. The Lournie does a fine fish supper (haddock and chips) at an honest price, but note, there is no place to eat in this wee shop. They do a wide selection of other take-away meals but we stuck with the traditional fare and weren't disappointed. We found the staff very friendly and helpful - they willingly supplied forks and napkins when they they learned we would be eating in the car.We recommend this "chipper" and will call back in when near Laurencekirk again

Have been to Lournie chipper several times. We live around 15 mins away but it's worth a trip in if we're in the mood for a takeaway. There are only a handful of takeaways in Laurencekirk but in my opinion this is the best by far. Normally I have a chicken breast supper - lovely tasty chicken, in crispy batter served with a wedge of lemon. The chips are amazing - twice cooked (I think) and freshly cut - none of the frozen chips that you can get in some places. The owner and his wife (I think) are really friendly. Each order is taken and cooked to order so there is a bit of a delay and if it's busy you can expect to wait quite a while but it's worth the wait.We moved from Aberdeen a couple of years ago and to be honest this is by far a better chipper than any of the ones in Aberdeen.

If you are heading North to Aberdeen worth wee detour off the A9 for a quality fish supper. Appears they are made to order so be prepared to wait - in what is a small shop that's likely to be a busy. Placed order, requested pensioner portion but was charged full rate (same argument from previous customer) and was then told pensioner portion not available for what was ordered.Ongoing arguments between staff and owner whist there.Food was well cooked and tasty - but considering the lack of people skills and customer care we'll take the short journey to Gourdon to Hornblowers where the food is far better - and the staff give their all - instead of hardly giving a dam.

The quality of especially the Fish was excellent, the chips were good. A waste of time phoning ahead to be ready in 10 minutes. The staff were serving any one who walked in first. After about 10 people had been served we found this irritating and asked where our order was. The girl's expression looked as taken aback. If they want to keep new customers and we are long term local from the next village they need to stop the nepotism

This Bistro is as good as it gets, there again last Saturday evening with friends and had an excellent dinner. Great starters of scallops & soup, lobster mains and one other main which escapes me, oh and managed a sweet, fabulous. A few drinks including a couple of bottles of wine, very. The sad news is, we were told it was closing permanently the following evening Sunday and it has, due to lack of business which is a terrible shame. We travelled all the way up from Laurencekirk picking up friends en-route as we have done in the past. It a shame an establishment like this have closed.
