This place is fabulous, lots of choice for games. It's a nice environment, the staff are lovely. Food & drink is great too.

Excellent board game café over 2 floors. Dog friendly, great food and really good service. £2 an hour per person if you're playing the games (capped at £6 each) but no charge if you're just having food/drink. Will definitely be back

The long rest is my hobby home away from home. Lovely little venue that's got loads of gaming space, a large board game collection, great food and staff who feel more like friends. If you ever see me there and know me from wargaming and youtube, come up and say hi.

I went here for the first time as a birthday treat from my partner and my dnd group and the place was really good. The food was really nice too

Oh dear. It does not bring me joy to write this review as the atmosphere and staff were stellar. But as a person that reviews coffee in places that don't sell coffee as a feature, it's my duty to document the cuppas I consume as a future note to myself, or anyone else that heeds my warnings... I ordered a latte from the bar (which was around £3-£3.30, so not a too bad price) and returned to my table upstairs. The fact that I was able to play a board game and have table service was a great idea. This way I could stay engaged with the feature of the day instead of waiting for a cup. But honestly, I wish I could have watched the brewing process, since this coffee was foul. Staying at the bar may have had my drink arrived faster too, it took perhaps 15-20 mins for me to have one cup served. The beans lacked flavour, or moreso, had flavour but had lost them over time. I think that the beans had been in the hopper for too long and were exposed to the air. This isn't always a bad thing, but the ratio of water to froth to foam when paired with a bad tasting coffee is the nail in the coffin. I felt the ratio was closer to cappuccino in the guise of a latte. The biscuit that was served with the coffee was a nice touch, but when your biscuit not only doesn't compliment your drink, but tastes better than your drink, you have messed up as a barista. I reluctantly finished my drink that evening, and will not be ordering coffee again unless there are drastic changes to the preparation method, or more attentiveness to how old their products are. I would have rated one star, but I cannot fault the keen staff, table service and very positive atmosphere of Long Rest. I will be back to play D&D sometime, but I won't be having another cuppa...

Great atmosphere. Such a wide selection of games. You'd assume the food/drink offerings weren't great due to it placing such focus on games but you'd be wrong.

Atmosphere is wonderful, and the selection is great. Genuinely a wonderful place to spend time. Unfortunately, the food was a massive let down and a huge black mark on the experience. We were a group of five. We ordered three burgers, a pizza, and an order of chips. 10 minutes after ordering, we were told the type of burgers we wanted weren't available, so we swapped those orders to different kinds - no problem, it happens. Drinks arrived nice and promptly. We then waited over an hour for the three burgers to show up. I then had to wait a further 20 minutes on top of that for my pizza. I have no idea how it can conceivably take 90 minutes to make a single pizza. The place wasn't busy, we didn't see any food orders come in or go out after we arrived. When the food finally did arrive, it was below average. Not repulsive, certainly edible, but disappointingly bland and tasteless for the amount we had to wait. The order of chips finally came out about 15 minutes after the pizza did. They were the exact same chips as what were served with the burgers, so the delay is a mystery. The drinks menu was pretty good, though, so provided you aren't here to eat, you'll have a good time. Go to the Long Rest, but perhaps eat first. EDIT: Returned here on 17/2/24 and the food and has somehow gotten worse. It was already bad, but has now become comically awful - my friend waited 30 minutes for a single vegan hotdog in a stale bun. My husband and I waited another 30 minutes for an extremely bland pizza. The kitchen was not remotely busy, there is no justification for a single small pizza taking 30 minutes. The tables were stickier than before, and the service was worse. This is still a cool board game cafe to kill time in, but I have no idea how it intends to make money with a food menu this atrocious.

What a great afternoon. First time visiting a board game cafe and what an eye opener. We loved it!! Staff here were great, the food was good and we loved the atmosphere. The person who welcomed us helped and gave game recommendations, to which we ended up loving. Would highly recommend Long Rest.

A lovely little place, where the staff are friendly, welcoming and happy to help in any way they can. They accommodated us as an impromptu walk-in just before Christmas and could not have done more to make us feel at home. The food was delicious. I had the chicken and bacon waffles, which were extremely well-prepared and tasty…my mouth is watering even thinking about it now! There is a massive selection of games to play and my buddy and I had a fantastic time with the ones we chose. Would 100% recommend!

The staff are fab but they are really slowly with the food and drink. However, when your playing the games time goes quicker anyway.

What a wonderful place! The service was great, warm and welcoming. The food and drinks were delicious, took a bit of time to come but well worth the wait and totally understandable when it was quite a busy evening in the cafe. So many games to choose from and the atmosphere was really good. The layout of the cafe is perfect too, lots of space. Looking forward to coming back.

Really chilled environment - knowledgeable staff and welcoming to a pair of newbie/non locals! We're even travelling over an hour back here for a session as we had such a good time! Oh and excellent cocktails!

It's a beautiful place. Equally grown up and down to Earth, welcoming all in a sophisticated but fun way. Huge number of games to borrow, and tables to sit at. Lovely cocktails too! Beer was £7 which is a bit of a sting, but I guess that can be quite normal for craft ales. Anyway, totally recommend.

Long Rest have a really wide selection of games, great food and drink options at reasonable prices and their staff are friendly and helpful - 5 stars all round 😊

Great staff, great games, great experience. Not a huge variety of games in comparison to other board games cafes that I have been too but definitely worth a visit. They have a baby changing station and a nice (no crowded) layout so is very much accessible to prams. But has no lift - the staff are lovely so were very much happy to help with game suggestions. They have events on regularly so definitely check they website if you want to save some pennies.

Great place, lots of games to chose and food is really good, milkshakes are fab but filling! In the best way of course. Had a book swap shelf that was stocked with so many good titles- so bring along something you've read to swap! Staff are really friendly too

My friends and I had our first visit to Long Rest in February, and it was amazing! An enormous selection of games to choose from, relaxed atmosphere and upstairs seating! I had an adorable heart shaped brownie, which I couldn't help but take a photo of. I'd absolutely recommend visiting Long Rest - you could even use it to try out new games you've never played before purchasing them for yourself!

Chilled atmosphere with loads of games and great food. The lady that was working was really helpful as I would imagine all the staff are. They help explain how the games are played and can't do enough to cater for particular needs and requirements, where possible.

Really nice café with a great set up for playing games. We popped in on a whim as a couple and ended up staying for 5 hours! Good choice of games, very helpful staff, nice food and drinks, and a well designed environment for a fun boardgame session.

I go to Long Rest at least once a week, and have been since they opened. The customer service has never faltered, even when busy, and you can tell the owners are incredibly passionate about the entire experience of the people who visit. I'm always excited to see what new events they have planned, and I can absolutely see myself renewing mine and my partners memberships when they expire.

Went there several times with my boyfriend when I last visited some months ago and had a lovely experience everytime! Really miss their wingspan milkshake. Hope to visit them again once I'm back in Hanley!

Awesome venue. Staff are warm and friendly. Food is great and there is a nice selection of beers etc Wonderfull selection of board games, a role players haven and superb place for geeks of all ages to relax. Can't fault it.

Amazing board game cafe with a wealth of games available to play, awesome hot chocolate and the friendliest of staff. We rented out the RPG room for my son and his friends for his 15th birthday. After our DM had to pull out last minute, Adam found a new DM for the game (Josh, who was awesome). Couldn't recommend highly enough 👌

The community at long rest is amazing. Such an great group of people. The staff are the nicest people ever and all the other fellow gamers are so welcoming. A great place for either a whole family to come and enjoy games together or for adults to come have a drink and some food play games surrounded by great people. Also have lots of events on so always something to do. Very dogf and child friendly. Also another plus is the food is awesome and they serve alcohol! Won't find my going any where other than here.

Great place, comfy, quiet and very welcoming. Had the fortune of playing with one of the owners who was very nice and a good laugh. The posh oatcakes were a winner and the brownies look immense!!

Wonderful place to spend the evening - we took advantage of the 4 friends for a fiver option (as it was a friday) and we weren't disappointed. Great selection of games, friendly staff and a brilliant atmosphere to finish it all off. Would definitely visit again :)

We became members not long after the boardgame cafe opened. It was well worth it as we've spent lots of evenings and afternoons there. Everyone is very friendly and there's a really nice, chilled atmosphere. There's a good range of games for all levels. There's a good menu with a mixture of light bites and meals. We've had oatcakes, pizzas, nachos and lots of cake. Food has always been nice and fresh. It's worth a visit just for the milkshakes. They also have a fab range of cocktails that are 2 for £10 on Thursdays!

A really nice place to spend an afternoon or evening. Lots of games to choose from and loads of well run events to participate in. The atmosphere is relaxed and chilled and welcome is always warm and friendly. The food and drinks are delicious, with healthy options as well as cakes and cocktails.

Came here one evening with some mates to play Catan. Long Rest came highly recommended from a friend so we thought we'd try it out. When you walk in you're greeted and taken care of throughout the night by super friendly, knowledgeable staff. Once we were seated the staff were attentive and took our drinks order and informed us of how the pricing worked for the tables. Personally, considering the collection of board games I think it's incredibly good value. There's an excellent choice of food and drink on offer, I didn't get the chance to sample any of the food but I've been told it's very good and of a reasonable cost. I also like that they have tailored the food choices in a way that means you can eat good food without getting the board games greasy. The atmosphere and decor inside is clean and modern with a vintage twist. It's super relaxing and cosy and you feel very welcome whether you're a D&D master or connect 4 newbie. If you're looking for somewhere to have fun in a group or cosy date night, Long Rest is definitely somewhere to check out for something a bit different. Board games are an excellent bonding experience so why not play some with a Cocktail or two in a relaxing and fun environment.

What a fantastic example of a small business ran by an incredible team! It’s so refreshing to have a place like this in Hanley. The staff are all lovely and welcoming, and the atmosphere is friendly. There’s a huge selection of games on the wall, and they have events too. Plenty of food and drink options to keep you happy whilst you play!

Nice atmosphere but the prices! My partner and I sat down at a table and ordered our food, I had the vegan wrap and he had the pork wrap (wraps or nachos were the choices). We pulled connect 4 from the shelf to have a little play while we waited for our food. The wraps were very small and not at all worth £8 considering my vegan wrap was just quorn slices. All in all the cost was not worth the time.

Perfect spot to spend the evening chilling with some friends would playing. Bonus they have good and drinks too. If you fancy something more social, they also have events! 10/10

Had a great time here with my son. They're allowing children to game for free through the summer holidays, as long as they're with a paying adult. He loved the bubblegum ice cream milkshake. There's a fantastic array of games available and the staff are more than happy to help you grasp the rules if it's one you're not familiar with. Friendly staff and great drinks options too! Will definitely be back. Highly recommended!

I spent 2 hours here today with my 10 year old daughter, and I was genuinely sad to leave. There were games for everyone, young and old, even a D&D room. The staff were attentive, kind and helpful. The food and drinks were great and the atmosphere was amazing. All in all, it was a pleasure, and we cannot wait to visit again. I would highly recommend a visit to Long rest. Thanks guys!

We had a great visit to Long Rest cafe this week. Myself and three friends who I went with had never been before but we will definitely be back. A great vibe in there and hundreds of games to choose from. Simple food choices (bagels or pizza) but perfect for what you need and delicious milkshakes. The staff were very very good and were on hand to teach us any rules to the games we played and made sure we had everything we needed. Overall a great visit!

Fantastic board game cafe with a great selection of games and one of the coolest RPG rooms I've ever seen. The food is great and there is an excellent selection of ales. Best of all, the staff are lovely and the owners are clearly very passionate about the place.

Took part in the Marvel and Disney quiz night. It was lots of fun with a full house of people. Lots of choices of food, drinks and snacks. Quite a few games to choose from for various group sizes and experience. Price was reasonable too. Owners seemed very approachable and friendly. Will definitely visit again.

Love love love love love. Brilliant venue, amazing vibe, incredibly friendly staff, tasty beverages, great selection of boardgames, clearly passionate people about what they do. I can spend many an hour enjoying a chilled time with friends playing boardgames! What I particularly love is that you could quite happily drop in for a coffee or a cocktail, ignore the boardgames and still be happy. Definitely one of my favourite venues in the vicinity!

Long Rest is exact what Hanley has been lacking - a great location with a beautifully decorated seating area where you can do something other than just eat and drink; play board games! There's a decent selection so far (and continuously growing), with something to suit everyone from people deep into the hobby, to families and groups looking for party games. The shelves also have an excellent category system to help find something to play that day, and the staff are super friendly 🎲 Definitely recommend the Everdell Bramble cocktail and their coffee is lovely ☕

Warm and inviting with a phenomenal selection of board games, the Long Rest is an absolute gem. Catering to tabletop gaming beginners and experts alike with a separate room available for d&d and an lfg board for people wanting to join a chronicle or spin a tale themselves. A nice selection of food, craft ale and cocktails is the icing on the cake. 10/10 will game again.

A great board game cafe. The staff were very friendly and helpful, keeping us well suppelid with drinks all day. The venue is clean and well laid out, with a range of games, including some for suitable for young children. The brownies were delicious, and the D&D room looked amazing!

Went in for a little nerd-date with my girlfriend. We didn’t reserve a table because we didn’t know how busy it would be (though since it was a Saturday we really should have booked in advance) and they were happy to accommodate us! It has a very lovely atmosphere, great for friends and families alike! They are also going above and beyond to help my friends and I arrange regular sessions for Dungeons & Dragons games! The owner, Dani, is amazingly helpful and I can’t wait to have many more experiences with them!

Absolutely amazing place. Went here Last night, Friday and we stayed for quite a long time, they have a massive range of board games, we played quite a few. The food and drink selection was great. The staff went above and beyond truly. The owner, Adam is such a character, so lovely and really helpful- also.. Really good at UNO!!! The other staff were all extremely kind and were very willing to give us a helping hand if we were stuck on a game or didn’t know how to play. Thankyou all, it was just an amazing night and we will be coming back! Definitely recommend!

Lovely boardgame cafe with a respectable library with showings in party, family, light, medium and heavy games. It feels nice and cosy, especially downstairs and an incredibly well equipped fantasy themed RPG room with D&D source books and a collection of fully painted minis for off the shelf adventuring!
