A pretty building in a pretty village. And the best rated tearoom apparently. This can only lead one to come to the sad conclusion that one is in an old-fashioned tourist trap. Sandwiches at £11 plus should always be a warning. But when they come out looking like something you could get at the next town along for half the price, your heart will sink and your wallet groan. The savoury cream tea we had didn't fare any better. Instead of a quality cheddar, expect cream cheese. The chutney is likewise lacklustre, sporting a vinegary tone, The scone is just bland. Oh, and stick to the local Costa for your coffee. Unless you favour coffee- flavoured foam.

Our visit to Locks tea rooms was lovely, we sat in the lovely courtyard garden in the lovely afternoon on a visit to Dunster Castle. I had an amazing sandwich, fresh granary bread filled with loads of tuna mayo, accompanied by side salad, coleslaw & crisps - delicious. My husband had the homemade soup with a roll & butter which he enjoyed. A lovely place to visit, staff very friendly.

I love it. The fact that I travel 35 miles from Barnstaple to sit in their lovely tea garden and savour the atmosphere speaks for itself. Even the wild birds agree - they hopped near my feet, encouraged by my sacrifice of part of a delicious scone, one of the best ever.

Excellent little tea garden that we happened to stumble on after a visit to the castle. Try the cream tea. Best scone I have ever had, with jam and clotted cream and a pot of tea. We sat in the front courtyard area with comfortable seats but also a garden with benches at the back. Tucked away but well worth finding.

Popped in for a late lunch after visiting Dunster Castle. Started out by sitting in the very pleasant garden but, as it started to rain, moved inside to an equally pleasant interior. The extremely friendly, helpful staff took our order and, as my wife is Gluten Free, ensured that her food did not compromise her diet. I had sandwiches which were delicious. Can certainly recommend.

Whilst I’m far from a frequent reviewer, I felt empowered to write this one as I really couldn’t believe the events that unfolded from this seemingly quaint and surprisingly well reviewed tea room. Came in with family, 4 of us in total, having had a great day at Dunster Castle. Needed to fill a hole and had been looking forward to a cream tea and some lunch. We just walked in and conveniently found a table instantly. Sat in a nice spot in a courtyard that, although very dated, fitted the aesthetics of Dunster really well. Ordered from a waitress who had no real positive or negative characteristics, 4 x chicken and leek pasties, and 2 cream teas along with a couple cokes and a coffee. Drinks came out and food followed shortly after. 2 pasties were piping hot, but 2 pasties were cool, not the end of the world we thought, and in typical British fashion, rather than make a scene, we settled for it as it seemed edible! As they were being eaten however, the further you got to the middle, the more cold they were, to the point it was like the core was still frozen. Having seen a random man walking into the kitchen with a bag of 4 frozen uncooked pasties, and commenting ‘there’s our pasties’ it was fairly clear that these 2 pasties had been either cooked on a different shelf in an oven, or had just not been left in as long. It doesn’t really matter how, they were cold. We called a different waitress for attention and were either ignored or not heard. At this point, we were a little disappointed, but accidents and mistakes happen, and we would have been more than satisfied to have raised the complaint, and either had the food replaced, or preferably those items not charged to our bill as we had eaten half of each of them and wouldn’t have wanted another. After not managing to get a waitresses attention, one of our party then went to the kitchen kiosk area and were ignored by no less than 3 members of staff, until finally one bothered to speak to us, our original waitress, who soon came to get the uneaten food, and we clearly explained that it was ice cold, and suggested that she touched the inside of the pasties, so that she could tell we weren’t exaggerating. I can’t be clearer, they were ice cold! Once we had finished up drinks and cream teas, we went to pay. We were met with one of the rudest and abrupt staff members I have ever met, who turned out to be the owner. She decided that ‘the customer is always right’ ethos doesn’t apply to her establishment, and we were just wrong. She said that the food was not ice cold to touch. When asked if she touched it, she said its in the bin and no she didn’t, so how did she know?! She then went on to insult us, asking if our type of people do this very often? An awful statement to make, given that we had been so amicable and just wanted to pay our bill. We asked to pay and leave 3 times, asking how much we had to pay. She had no idea. It seemed that the owner had totally lost control over what should have been a simple, ‘I’m sorry your food is cold, lets make that right for you’. Customer service is all about 2 ears and one mouth, listen to a customer’s issue and find a resolution. This vile woman just wanted an argument! She did not listen to what we had to say, she refused to take any accountability for the food being sub-standard and uncooked, telling us we didn’t tell anyone. We tried! We were ignored! In answer to this, apparently her team are not trained to use the door, and serve customers! When asked if she had probed the pasties to check they were thoroughly cooked, she declined to comment. Perhaps a visit from the food standards agency would be welcomed here, as it is clear that there is no protocol to check food items are thoroughly cooked, and her standards of customer service may well be reflected with an ‘I don’t care’ attitude in the kitchen also. To be clear, and not that it matters or should be justified, we are all working people that were just enjoying a bit of spare time with our family, and lets not flatter yourself, If we wanted a free lunch, we would have gone to a much nicer establishment than yours! To make comments like this towards any customer is appalling and I am surprised this sub standard attitude to go along with her sub standard food, has made it in business for this long. I highly suggest you take a look at other tea rooms in the local area rather than settling for this. Advice to the owner – you obviously hate your job, you have zero customer service skills and an attitude that would make a lot of people feel very threatened and bullied. Leave the customer service industry and don’t work with the public, you are terrible at it!

Redolent with Atmospherics, and the ' lingering spirits' of those former pupils when it was a small school. Surrounded by small ancient buildings, making the entire village of Dunster such a lovely place to visit, it should not be missed. Food was lovely; the staff were outstanding. We were served by young people who were friendly, helpful and efficient, so refreshing. Having lived in Spain for many years we cannot help but compare standards of service and generally the UK generally is borderline deplorable. Locks however was excellent (not just the young people!). The major chains should see how staff actually interested in their customers makes such a difference to the experience.

My family took me here for a cream tea as my birthday treat. I do have special dietary requirements so they thought this place seemed perfect. I ordered a cappuccino and selected oat milk instead of dairy as I can’t have dairy. I was bought a coffee with milk in a jug. They apologised and took it away 8 minutes later they returned with what looked like another coffee with milk already poured in it. I questioned that I had ordered a cappuccino and was told oat milk won’t froth! Never had this problem before anywhere else. When they came to take the order for our cream teas I asked what alternative cream they use and they looked at me as if I had gone mad. Clearly not very aware of special dietary requirements at all even though they claim to cater for them. Gave them 2 stars because the rest of the party without dietary requirements enjoyed theirs very much otherwise it would have been 1.

Having visited the castle we nipped into the village of Dunster for afternoon tea - and saught-out Locks Victorian Tea Rooms having viewed it previously on a Youtube video of Dunster. The venue is lovely and accessed through a short alley entrance from the main street, leading into courtyard seating. It also has indoor and garden seating and is deceptively spacious. Our welcome, the service and our food and drinks were all lovely and without fault. Two pasties, two cream teas, and a couple of coffees later and time to pay the bill..... a very reasonable price, somewhat less than I had been expecting and not at all the over-inflated 'Let's rinse the tourist' charges made by some of Dunster's other venues. A big 'Well Done' to Locks Victorian Tea Rooms. We will be back.

We were given menus that were taken off another table which she committed to sanitize, in fact we wiped them down yourselves with our own wetwipes, this was a real let down as the Covid -19 precautions on entering the tea rooms were excellent this oversight let them down! We ordered cream teas for 3 adults and although there was a huge choice of different scones they only had one flavour of jam available. They also forgot to put any teaspoons on the tray! As I said it was a very busy afternoon but that's part off what you should expect when you're running a tea rooms in a pretty holiday village! I don't think we'll be returning any time soon!

The cream tea was excellent with fresh, warm scones, honey, cream again a combination we had not tried before. The cheddar scones with cream cheese and chutney were just as good. If we come back to Dunster in the future we will definitely come back for more.

We visited this place on a very wet October day. On our first visit we had Hot chocolate and cake. All were satisfied. Lemon cake was described as lush by one, the Victoria sponge was scrumptious and the courgette and avocado was described as weird but surprisingly good. So all very happy. Our second visit was for lunch and all had jacket potatoes with various fillings. All satisfied and absolutely full up. This place has become a must for our family when ever we visit Dunster. The food never dissapoints and the staff are friendly and helpful. It is always consistent. I would happily recommend this place to anyone.

Lovely friendly tea room right in the centre of Dunster. As it was a sunny day, we sat in the garden and were served by Darren, who was very charming. We ordered two of the locally baked pasties, one being cheese and onion and one was leek, chicken and bacon. They were both served with a generous portion of salad, including delicious home made coleslaw. I can thorough recommend the leek, chicken and bacon pasty! All covid measures were in place and adhered to. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

We had finished our vist to Dunster Castle and had decided to find a place for a cuppa as a reward for our long walk Dunster village itself is a quaint place to vist as well and is awash with tea shops some pubs hotels and some quality shops and is not a big place Top tip it’s easy to get to and not too big a village. If you have visited the castle it’s best to leave your car in the National Trust car park and walk around as parking is limited in the village. But onto the tea shop which was the main event This is a fabulous, friendly tea shop with cheerfull welcoming staff They have a garden and courtyard and where well organised for Covid. Lots of choices for high tea salads and quiches etc oh and gorgeous warm clearly home made apple cake and cream yummy highly reccomended

Duster is lovely. The tearoom is right in the centre of the Main Street. I had the chicken pie and it was delicious. My sister had the leek pie and didn’t care for it. My wife was enjoying her quiche until she found a long hair in it. Service was good and quick. Nice garden

We decided to stop for lunch with our 6 month old baby and 3 year old. I stood at the entrance and waited by the sign following COVID safe requirements. A member of staff looked fed up, miserable and Unwilling to smile. I said there was a table inside and to follow her. So I ensured that my whole family washed their hands using the sanitiser provided. We followed the member of staff through who then told us off for entering and appeared cross about something. I explained that we had washed our hands. She looked completely out of control and we felt very unwelcome so we walked off. I understand that people can have a bad day but i feel when working in the hospitality industry you should remain calm and be friendly. Even my 3 year old said ‘ they are not nice at that cafe because the lady was cross at us’. With two very hungry crying children it was not really nice having someone shout at us!

Firstly, it was great that the tearoom was open between Christmas and New Year, so we were very happy to visit. The café was very prettily decorated and festive. Now the not so great. We ordered cherry scones and coffees. The scones we were given were plain, but we ate them anyway as it wasn't worth fussing over (upon remarking to the waitress, she said that the bags had probably been mixed up..) cappucinos that we ordered were very frothy (about 1" of froth above the rim of the cup) and very weak. Won't put us off returning though - but not for the coffee!!

We have been going to Locks for many years and always like to go back. The atmosphere is nice, and cosy in autumn. The food is very good and this is why we try and get back for a cream tea now and then. We are rating average this time since we were turned away the last time we went a couple of weeks ago - 20 minutes before the time that we were given to believe was closing time by looking at Google Maps. It was not a disaster as we found another place that closed at 5.00 pm. The only reason that we are mentioning this is because a) we were sorry not to be able to have tea at Locks and b) we got a rather curt and abrupt response when we told the young lady that the information about opening times was incorrect. So our advice to those wanting to go is to call to find out about opening times - you cannot find them on Trip Advisor and the website does not seem to exist.

Stopped off here after visiting Dunster Castle. It was out of the main season and mid afternoon, so quiet, but custom picked up towards 4pm. Service was friendly and attentive...my friend had the ginger version of scones (a variety were on offer) served with honey, and from the look on her face, fully enjoyed! Generous helpings of cream and jam and large scones (Could have done with more fruit in the fruit scones though). Sadly not enough room for the delicious looking home made cakes...

Visited on two consecutive days, we know that we love this Tea Room and the food is always a treat. Day one was for lunch, beautiful sunny day, so we sat in the courtyard, enjoying a jacket potato with beans, my usual blue cheese on toast, and a generous pot of Earl Grey with a jug of hot water to top it up. Finished off with a scone with jam and cream which we shared. Day two we indulged ourselves with a cherry scone cream tea each, with again a pot of Earl Grey. We will be back!

Beautiful setting; a quintessential English garden. We have visited Kitnors over the past few years whilst holidaying in Devon but our last visit was very disappointing. Ordered cheese on toast and cheese scones. Thin sliced loaf with thinly processed cheese. Scones were tiny with thinly sliced processed cheese. Small portions of chutney. All served on small tea plates. We’ve always promoted Kitnors to others but sadly not anymore. Staff were friendly but food was poor.

I reviewed the White Horse on the 18 April 24 when it re-opened after a period of failure. It was wonderful then just to have the pub open for drinks but now Lisa and Tim have a limited menu serving meals from Thursdays to Saturdays evenings and Sunday lunches. Some friends dropped into stay the other night and treated us to a Sunday lunch at the pub, the first since re-opening, which was not just good but exceptional. The beef was first rate with five vegetables beautifully cooked. The place was booked out and all by locals enjoying great hospitality filling the room with animated conversation. We shall be going again as soon as we can! On Mondays our 1759 Guinness Club is now able to regain our home in Stogumber’s White Horse. Last night we met to enjoy Irelands greatest stout and gained a fair few members. Word is spreading!

We have not been in this tea gardens for a good many years, either its been shut or its been very busy. This year we struck lucky and went in on the Friday afternoon. We had the the mixed cream tea-half savoury and half sweet with a pot of tea for two-we both enjoyed the warm scones and it was the correct amount for what you are paying-must be some greedy people if this was not enough for them, good value for money, lovely setting and warm and welcoming service
