Vroeger hete het overigens Little Japan, nu Oriëntal.

I tried this restaurant several times because it's so close to the tube and just hoping that in the past I might have just caught them in a terrible mood for some reason. But really as time goes by, it only seems to be getting worse. I've met some unpleasant people in my life, but the person serving the food at the counter is on a whole new category and is by far the rudest person I have ever encountered in my life. Not only does she treat you like s**t, she literally curses and throws the bill at you...! Seeing no reason for her behaviour, which I can only ascribe to mental illness, my reply today was "You're very kind. Thank you very much." As this continued, while I was waiting for my takeaway to come up, other customers arrived, 4 while I was waiting, all of which eventually left, some after having paid, not caring to wait anymore for their food in view of the painful spectacle. Never again.

The food here tasted ok to me, and was served fairly quickly. It’s also reasonably priced. That’s the positives. The unfriendly service and the tired decor weren’t good, but my biggest worry was the dead cockroach on the floor of the men’s room. The kitchen and toilets are both downstairs, hence my concern.

She’s been the rudest person I ever met in my life, she was so bad we left without even eat!!!!!I can’t accept this behaviour. Those type of people should NOT be working in public. Sad thing is they will always get new costumers because of their position right next to touristic attractions and South Kensington

This place is very close to South Kensington Station in a pleasant area packed with eating places, so competition is high. We were intrigued by this slightly scruffy little place which seemed popular with Asians, so decided to give it a go. Décor was in need of a little attention both inside and out.The service was somewhat humourless and brusque. The waitress appeared mildly irritated by customers but it was not rude and seemed to be the same for Westerners and Asians. The food was mostly very good and the Special fried rice in particular was excellent - this and a meat dish would make a great mid sized meal. The food arrived quickly and prices were very reasonable.Would we go again? - 50/50 - it was a great place for cheap eats if you are not too fussy about décor and service

17/02/2017 10PM We ordered Bento Box (chicken and beef)both Bentos arrived in less than 10mins. fresh? nah! The chicken tasted like it was old, prepared 2 days ago or something and full of fat. The beef was so hard I could not eat it at all. what a disappointment! We decided to leave... Both Bentos were left intact practically untouched! We approached the guy working there, he looked annoyed and told us not to make a scene! why would we? we have manners.. we just wanted to let them know we were leaving - that's all.Just on the way to the door an old lady started shouting at me..ARE YOU HAPPY!!!!! That was so rude of her and quite scary to be honest. Maybe she was upset because people keep complaining about the food they serve! they should so something about it... Looks like it could be a nice, hole-in-the-wall Japanese place. But the service is abysmal, and the sushi is horrible and worse than the stuff you buy at service stations. The seafood udon soup was pretty decent, about the only saving grace. Bento boxes are bland and uninspiring. This place is cheap so there is that saving grace, but a complete disappointment and waste of time. Go elsewhere!

I dont get why people are being so harsh on this place. Granted its not a 5 star restaurant, but still it's not as bad as all these reviews suggest. I popped in here for lunch and got a vegetable udon soup while my mom got a bento box. The prices were very cheap compared to what else we'd seen and the food quality was great. Yes, the place isn't up to standards of big fancy restaurants and its a bit crowded but I feel that the food quality and hospitable service outweigh that.

From the outside, this place looks like it could either be a really great find or a really disappointing one. Unfortunately it was the latter. Paid £6.50 each for a katsu bento box that, although well portioned, was very unpleasant. All salad options were horrible, the sea weed in particular was terrible and the smell of it overpowered the meal. Although the chicken and rice themselves were cooked fine, the sauce was not katsu, it was cheap BBQ sauce that you could get in a squeeze bottle. We paid quickly and left, and felt queasy for hours afterwards.

First heard about this place as I was waiting in the queue at the very confusing food outlet in the V&A.Man in front of me said he normally goes to Little Japan for coffee - where the service is much quicker - but not on this occasion as he had a disabled companion. At the end of a day viewing three special exhibitions, hungry and suffering from 'museum feet,' we spotted Little Japan near S Kensington underground. The price list compared very favourably with the Polish establishment nearby, what is more, there was just room for two of us.Unobtrusive but very funny lady serving. Food quick to appear; hot, tasty and filling - just what we needed. No, it was not posh and the trip to the loo was an adventure but I would go there again.

Ho vissuto a Londra qualche mese.

Came for a cheap lunch with friends. When approached by the waitress we said we needed a minute before ordering and were reminded that "this place is fast food, you order fast, eat fast and get out fast". Food came and we were prepared for sub par "Japanese" food (it's run by Chinese staff with Chinese cuisine on the menu as well). For the price fair enough but when it came to pay the waitress was outright rude.At our table she had agreed to let us pay separately but at the till she insisted we pay together for 3 out of 4 items since she didn't have much change (she had plenty we could see the till). Then while we were paying she was muttering "bad customers" over and over!I suppose needing a minute to order something and agreeing to her request to pay together somehow makes us bad customers? Woman needs her head examined. Horrible experience will not be back!

She served two other customers who were trying to pay and understandably we waited. What irritated us the most was that she COMPLETELY ignored us the entire time, and I ventured to guess it was a place where you had to order up front. In the end, she continued to ignore us and went to eat side eyeing us all the while when she finished cleaning up her previous customers bills??? Dined here after visiting the nearby National History Museum. This was probably the worst place we have been to in London. We ordered the teriaki prawn bento and chicken katsu bento. This is NOT authentic Japanese food.. I think chinese owned as I heard the staff speaking in chinese. The prices are cheap though however you do get what you pay for - poor food! I can't even describe the food, it was just very cheap and tasteless, just awful. We should've left as soon as we saw the guy who was leaving the table we were being seated on with almost all his food left in his bento box.The katsu chicken had a weird HP similar sauce with vinegar, nothing like what youd usually get with chicken katsu. The vegetables were from FROZEN. Still had that wetness to it and were cold. To top it all of, they had a big note on a collection box saying "Service charge not included thank you" which is fine, but when paying the lady brought out a tray with a big note taped onto it also saying "SERVICE CHARGE NOT INCLUDED THANK YOU". I held out my hand for the change but she ignored it and spread out all the coins right next to the tray with the sticker and looked at me. Also didnt pay in pounds but in smaller coins to increase the chance of gettng tips. I had to awkwardly pick up every coin in front of the big note while she was looking at me. No way im tipping at this place.

This place does NOT serve Japanese food. Don't expect it to and you won't have a bad time. I've been eating here for a while, take my advice. Go in and order the 'cantonese fast food' type fried noodles/rice. They have generous portions and taste decent. The soup noodles aren't bad either. The food is not bad. If you order the right thing it can be filling and the price is the best thing you can find in South Kensington. So many 1 star reviews are not deserved to be honest. Just ignorant tourists running in this place getting mad that they don't serve 5 star fresh tuna steak sushi from Japan. Why the hell would you expect them to at their prices and in South Kensington? To get that kind of food in London you'd have to pay 2.50 pounds for a single piece of sushi. I'm laughing hard at a previous reviewer suggesting people to go to Le Pain Quotidien/Comptoir instead. Those restaurants serve good food, but they are literally 2-4 times the price. Different places are for different purposes!Their 'teriaki' chicken is just soy sauce chicken, their 'bento' boxes don't have anything they normally should. Yes this is true. But as I said, you shouldn't go there expecting (even remotely) authentic Japanese food. Just go in there to get a huge plate of fried noodles at 6 pounds and move on with your day.

This was some of the worst food I ever had to eat and it was a supplice to have to pay for it. Don't waste your money there. The place is small and looks like a family-run joint, at first; but nothing is cooked on the premises. Bento box consists of cold greens beans straight out of the can, two-twentieth of a tomato with bits of salad and mayo from the tube, dried out white rice, tasteless seaweed with stones in it (???) and your choice of whatever frozen meat drenched in OGM saturated sauce (don't go for Toriaka chicken!). I thought it would be healthier than a sandwich but in the end brilliant Paul opposite should have remained my choice, their food is truly delicious and never disappoints. Little Japan serves disgusting food at, for mine, £5.90, not inclusive of tip. Do yourself a favor and stay away. Absolutely any other place will be better than L.J., and, in fact, they are legion around the square from Paul to the Lebanese place, Le Pain Quotidien, an organic cafe, Ferdinanz & Wells. A post-Proms visit to simply find something cheap and cheerful on the way home was more than slightly offset by a very non-cheerful waitress and food clearly made to low standards. I know Japanese, food, language and cuisine and this shoddily decorated and money-grabbing slum NOT run by Japanese of course failed abysmally in terms of taste, presentation (machine-cut square sushi topped with fish of dubious freshness..really?) and most definitely in terms of my wife's yakisoba that looked and tasted like it had been scraped off the floor. The fact we also felt ill immediately after seems to match other reviews on this site reporting food poisoning so it's high time for them to be investigated officially for hygiene issues. Trip Advisor and others walking by be warned - stay well clear of Little Japan if you value your life expectancy. Dreadful.

Went there on Saturday night around 10pm when everything else seemed to be closing in the area. We ordered some miso soup, some California roll and bento boxes (chicken and salmon teriyaki). And japanese tea.For the first time in my life the miso soup had not taste at all, definitely no miso taste. The California roll's avocado was greying, a sure sign that it was not freshly prepared. The menu doesn't mention it but the bento came with little bits of green beans and some kind of seaweed which had no dressing at all. The mains were drowned under sauce however. The chicken seemed to have been steamed or maybe directly cooked in that sea of too-salty sauce, there was no hint of any attempt at crispiness for its skin. The salmon had probably been cooked long before as it was really overcooked/dry.And... the green tea was also totally tasteless... I believe you have to actually make an effort to master that level of bad cooking. Quite unbelievable.

We probably should have taken our first hint from the fact that somewhere attached to South Ken was dead. Upon entering the waitress was rude and unhelpful slamming picture menus down when questions were asked with a fake half smile. When my chicken Katsu arrived it was effectively a Poor take on KFC with BBQ sauce not katsu sauce, what appeared to be sticky rice not sushi rice and some colourless seaweed mush. The meat was grey and dry and tasted like pork. When we questioned this the waitress point blank argued with us. She then snatched my meal away without asking what I wanted to do and stormed off. She then had an elder gentleman appear with a grey chicken leg to argue that it was actually chicken and to try and talk me into the fact that the process of deep frying turned it grey. I can hold with errors but two members of staff arguing with me and offering no solution is disgraceful. I just hope we all make it to tomorrow without food poisoning.Trip advisor need to remove their sign from the window

I can't recommend this place, because I got food poisoning there and I definitely know that it's their fault. I can exclude food allergies and other meals as a cause, soI can 100% blame Little Japan for my sickness. I don't know what is going on in the kitchen, but a health inspector should take a look. The food itself seemed OK. I had fried noodles with vegetables. They are cheap and taste good for the price. The dishes are not japanese, but rather chinese. The service was bad. The waitress was absolutely unmotivated. I regret not reading the reviews first. I would have avoided this restaurant and so should you.

Good quality/price ratio, considering the average in London and the neighborhood. Very good location, service was according to "chinese standard", not smiling but efficient.

Popped in here for a quick linch as the prices looked good, it had a canteen feel and quite a few other diners. Big mistake. I ordered the chicken katsu bento at around £6 and you really get what you pay for. Fried, fatty chicken which was grey or pink inside, it tasted off (I may still end up in hospital before the day is out) and covered in a barbecue sauce instead of usual katsu sauce, anaemic salad, pink tomato slices, rice which was bland basmati instead for proper Japanese rice and a limp, foul tasting seaweed blob. The toilets felt like they may have once been the scene of a murder. Truly awful. Do not eat here. Ever.

This is a small restaurant just next to South Kensington station... So an excellent location amongst many eateries. Menu is simple.. Bento boxes, noodles or rice. Portions are good in size and food arrives reasonably quickly. However, for a 'Japanese' restaurant.. The service left a lot to be desired... Little service, brusque and certainly no smiles. Fine for a quick lunch. £9 per person for a bento box and jasmine tea.

There's really not much to commend this place. Our portions were huge and at about £6 a head cheap for Central London, but the food is bland and tasteless and we weren't the only ones leaving most of it on the plates. The service ranged from brusque, when we first got in, to downright rude, when they smacked our bill on our table before we'd finished eating. Avoid avoid avoid!

Ordered seafood noodles and beef teriyaki bento, both were terrible in taste presentation. Seafood was not fresh. Wasn't sure if the beef was real meat. Bento rice was not Japanese short grain rice and undercooked. Excellent rating could be done by their own staff because this place is nothing but terrible.

South Kensington underground and tube station environs are packed with eateries to attract the many people who live and work here and the millions of visitors to Exhibition Road for the famous museums: The Victoria and Albert (V&A), the Natural History Museum, the Geological Museum, the Science Museum and hot spots such as Christie's auctioneers on Old Brompton Road and of course window shoppers to Harrods. So to find a low priced meal was not expected. Little Japan does not look like the other eateries, it looks like what it is - a cafeteria quick meal with plastic covering the tablecloth. A photo sample window menu so you see what you get is very helpful. What attracts us is a full house. There were peoples from all over asia, america, and french and Brits. We get to chairs in the doorway to wait ten minutes. About thirty packed close covers. We choose vegetable noodle soup, and roast duck noodle soup with a Japan Tea. £13.50 in all. The portions were generous, warming and sustaining. The ambiance was the people. The Sophisticated frenchwoman with daughter and grandchildren, the tall american with the tiny asia woman, the japanese camera carrying couple, locals and holidaymakers; it could have been the cafeteria of the united nations. And you know what pleased very much......... no added service charge. Well done. I tipped. We did what we had come to do, ate and got warm and did a bit of people watching. VERY GOOD. Deserves to be in the top twenty percentile for everyman.

Wrong noodles and bulked out again with strange vegetables for japanese food. Japanese tea was nice.

I've been here a few times because it's cheap and honestly I thought it used to be pretty good food (and good value as well). I used to get the bento box even though I didn't really like the salad and veg but it was good value :)Just recently I went here again and had a bad experience. The chicken katsu (my favourite Japanese food) was awful!! The chicken was very thin but the outer batter is so thick it's more than double the thickness of the meat. The batter made me full so I couldn't finish the rice. The sauce was alright but so many potatoes and carrots, it was just unbalanced. Too little meat, too much carb. Boyfriend had the so called beef teriyaki which the sauce is not really teriyaki sauce tbh, meat was kinda weird texture but overall didn't taste so bad. Certainly better than my katsu. This one visit ruined Little Japan's reputation in my eyes and I wouldn't go here again. I'd like to believe the chef's changed, it used to taste a little better than this.

Despite other negative reviews, we decided to give Little Japan a try. We rather liked it. The Bento (food in a compartmentalised box) was good and filling, along with good teriyaki sauce. The udon (thick noodles in soup) itself was pretty good but the soup with beef was a bit greasy. Waitress polite.

I was visiting the South Kensington area with friends, and before going to the museums we needed a meal. This area unsurprisingly has lots of cafés, restaurants and pub menus to choose from. I saw the 'Little Japan' and the prices were cheap - being in a rush we went it. Since I was also travelling to SE Asia I thought the décor was something I would be getting used to anyway... Well I was right - I am writing this review from SE Asia and 'Little Japan' would be on the scale of above the worse or poor. That said is is far from good for what I would expect in Kensington. Nevertheless, the menu was good, and served quickly. I decided not to write the review for a few days ...just in case my digestive tract had second thoughts. There have been none. 'Little Japan' is what it is - if you want nice décor and smiling waitress service then go somewhere else, but if you're happy with a more 'typical' experience - then okay. The price is cheap and it is obvious why.

We were staying at a hotel close to the South Kensington Tube station. One night we decided to pass on pub grub and found this nice little hole-in-the-wall place right there by the tube station. It was so good we went back there the next night. I got the chicken curry with rice... TWICE. My wife got the sweet and sour chicken "box" meal... also twice. Service was very fast. The prawn bento was pretty tasty and the sushi gas the same acceptable flavour that you'd expect from the mini takeaway selections you get in a Tesco, but the menu felt decidedly Chinese generic aside from the sushi options. The decor is shabby and unauthentic and although inexpensive for the South Ken area, was also nit in keeping with it.

If I could give this place "0" stars, I would. I am 3rd generation Japanese from Canada. I was raised eating _proper_ Japanese food, made by Japanese people who actually lived in Japan (my grandmothers and great-aunties and other immigrant relatives), so I feel that I know what I'm talking about when speaking about Japanese food. What I got from Little Japan would _never_ have passed as "Japanese food" by my Grandparents or great-aunties or anyone else.We tried to get into Sushi Shop, which is located in the same neighbourhood, but had finished last orders for the afternoon when we arrived, so we ended up at Little Japan.I don't know where to begin... restaurant looked really shabby for the (South Kensington Tube) area... they had Chinese style red lanterns in the front window (definitely _not_ Japanese) and both they and the paper menus were faded. That should have been our first clue to run away.Menu in general was very limited and more Chinese in scope than Japanese, with more fried food and Chinese dishes than one would find on an authentic Japanese menu (note: the more fried items on a "Japanese" menu, the less likely that it's authentically Japanese, as claimed by the proprietors).... this isn't so surprising when one enters and discovers that it's run by Chinese people. I would normally find this to be rather misleading, but I am accustomed to how this works, given the number of Chinese run Japanese food/sushi restaurants there are in Vancouver. Anyway, I digress... inside of the restaurant looked shabby as well... basic decor and not much done to the shop to give the impression that it has anything to do with Japan/Japanese cuisine. It just looked like your typical UK restaurant that is in desperate need of refurbishment and redecoration. We ordered the "Mixed Sushi Set #3" For £22.50, it offered 16 nigiri and 16 makizushi of no specified description. What we received were, in fact, 14 nigiri sushi (consisting of 2 tamago (egg omelete) nigiri, 4 ebi (prawn) nigiri, 4 salmon nigiri and 4 tuna nigiri) - 2 inarizushi (which is definitely _not_ nigirizushi... it is a type of "rice ball" and does not have a "topping" per se... the rice is surrounded by sweetened, deep fried tofu, giving it a brown "pillow" like appearance), 8 pieces of kappa maki (cucumber roll) and 8 pieces of a roll that had bits of salmon in them. The presentation of the dish, while quasi Japanese in attempt, was poor, to say the least... and the execution of the food itself was of such an amateurish level that would have seen me harshly criticised by both my Mother *and* my Grandmother, had ever thought about serving it to them. The rolls were very poorly done, with the nori _not_ completely surrounding the rice (see photos) and the fillings were not centred into the middle of the roll, as is customary when making sushi rolls of any type. The inari were inadequately filled (the deep fried tofu should be plump looking but not so over-stuffed that it's hard to eat)... it's like they took an ingot of rice that was meant to be for the nigiri, stuffed it into the pouch and folded it up and put it out on the plate.I bit into a kappamaki and had to fight the urge to spit it back into my napkin. The sushi rice was definitely off... the rice was way too overcooked and soggy, and it tasted like it'd been made the day before. Thinking that this was a one off, I tried a salmon roll, with the same result. The inari wasn't much better either... the rice in that was not good... way too "wet" and overcooked in texture. My husband and I each had two ebi nigiri (prawn nigiri). I could only eat one of mine, as the prawn on the second one tasted bad (old/"off"), and I ended up spitting that into my napkin. The scariest part of the dish was the tuna nigiri. Never before have I seen supposedly "fresh" tuna have a brown tinge along the edges of the slice (again, see photos). I gave my husband (a White British person who <3 sushi and Japanese food in general) one of my salmon and one of my tuna nigiri because I know that he's partial to tuna and salmon sashimi. He agreed with me that it tasted off.As I've been eating sushi for most of my life (40+ years), I can honestly say that, as I tried to eat this "meal," I was scared for the first time to eat sushi and hoped that I didn't fall sick from the experience.... thankfully, 36 hours on, I didn't come down with food poisoning (although I would have had absolutely NO problem pointing the finger of blame squarely at Little Japan, had either my husband or I fallen sick). You may wonder why I didn't bring this to the attention of the restaurant... well, I would have said something to someone, if there were actually staff around to complain to, but we were pretty much left to our own devices for the majority of the meal. Husband and I ate what we could, as we were hungry (this was meant to be our lunch), paid and left, vowing _never_ to darken their door again. If you're looking for good, authentic food, I'd recommend Suzu (on Hammersmith Road, not too far from Hammersmith Tube station/Latymer Court) or even Hare and Tortoise (not authentic Japanese, but then not a risk to your health either), but stay away from Little Japan at all costs.

Wonderful area with lots of restaurants and people gathered outside. As a New Yorker, I did not want to eat at something we have in America so I popped into Little Japan. Yes, it is a bit worn and not as bright and shiny as the other chain restaurants. I was greeted by a lovely smile and my food arrived cold (well it was sushi and sashimi) and quick. No one rushed me to give up my table when the crowds came and I enjoyed leaving a tip since my lunch did not kill my budget for the day.

We ordered the tuna roll, and the tuna on the inside was a gray and looked rotten. We didn't even bother eating it. The salmon roll looked okay, and then I took one bite of it and spit it out because it tasted ghastly. I was so grossed out by the look of the tuna roll and the disgusting taste of the salmon roll, we decided not to bother with the mixed vegetables. Someone should really call the health department. This place should not be in business. I am certain the tuna was rotten, and probably a health hazard. I saw that one previous reviewer threw up after eating there. I met with my friends for a birthday. Waitress was a bit moody. Maybe she was tired or something else but it effects your mood also. She showed us a bar stools but we said nicely to be seated on one of the regular table and there was an empty one. She called her manager. Then manager offered us that table after cleaning. She cleaned by herself and she was soo hospitable, friendly. She took our orders and asked how was our orders during the meal. Orders was great, especially ramen portion was so satisfying.
