L'Hexagone in Norwich

We hadn’t been to l’Hexagone for a few months after a very busy summer. So today, six of us met up and I’m pleased to say, had a delicious lunch. It was so lovely to see Thomas and Gemma, both in top form. See you again soon guys! Xx

This authentic French restaurant has a small downstairs seating area, but don’t be put off if it is full, because there is a much larger area upstairs. We visited for lunch on a warm day and enjoyed two excellent salads. We would definitely visit again next time we are in Norwich.

First visited soon after opening in 2020 and it never fails to impress. Husband and wife team , Thomas et Gemma have successfully built a beautiful French style bistro in the heart of The Norwich Lanes. Thomas cooks a classic menu reminiscent of his childhood in France. Gemma is the beautifully attentive front of house. It works. Their restaurant is about them and their love and passion for what they do and they never fail to make people feel special. L’hexagone is in my top 5 favorite places to eat in Norfolk. (If you’re interested the other four are: bun x at micawbers, XO kitchen, The Boars in Spooner Row and Meadowsweet in Holt)

We were the first guests in L’Hexagone for dinner tonight and the service was amazing from start to finish. The decor was modern and I liked the French music - it made me feel like I was there! Myself and my partner had the onion soup, which was quite light (what I need from a starter!) and my cod main was delicious. My partner’s steak was “lovely” and well-cooked. We shared the chocolate mousse dessert which was rich and tasty. I would highly recommend this place for a treat meal! My only tiny critique would be the lack of vegetarian options on the menu.

Took friends out for dinner last night to L'Hexagone and once again it was amazing! We all had 3 courses which were all sublime. Thank you once again Gemma and Thomas, you truly are superstars!

Ok, this was a lunch for myself and my partner whose birthday it was. We were welcomed nicely by the waitress and shown to our table upstairs. After perusing the drinks menu, we both opted for a large glass of Sauvign blank. For food, we both had the French onion soup with garlic cheesy toast. For mains, my partner had the grilled asparagus salad, & I the entreated steak. The soup was delicious, but a slight mark down on the amount of cheesy toast. We both felt that the quantity was a bit mean. However, it was tasty. The asparagus salad was nice, my partner said, but another slight deduction in score due to being charged £1.50 for a tiny bowl of mayonnaise, albeit homemade. My entreated steak was delicious. Perfectly cooked, and the garlic and parsley drizzle on top was an amazing addition. Frittes were alright, & tiny salad ok, but tiny. Overall a nice lunch, but as one final point, I think, for a small privately run independent, husband and wife run bijou restaurant, they should not add the service charge to the bill. In my eyes, the addition of a tip and how much should always be left to the paying customer, and not assumed worthy by the establishment. I withdrew the service charge from the bill, but I did give the same amount in cash to my server / waitress. This was really just to make a point. Overall, it was a nice lunchtime experience with just a couple of mute points. Thanks, and we will return.

Thank you Thomas and Gemma for a wonderful evening at L’Hexagon. Eight of us sat down for dinner - seven of us went for the bavette and frites and one for the cod with butter sauce. To round off the evening we all tucked into the best crème brûlée ever. The atmosphere in the upstairs dining room was terrific with much laughter and jollity.

Birthday dinner with a couple of friends. It's so cosy, friendly and unptretentious it's exaclty the sort of place I love. Limited menu done really well. I want to go back before they get famous and move into bigger premises (as they surely will).

It is such a joy to have a wonderfully relaxed lunch with delicious simple French food and without fuss. All five of us left well pleased. Thank you Thomas and Gemma, be seeing you again soon.

With my brother over from Australia, I needed somewhere for lunch to impress his taste buds, so naturally we chose l'hexagone! Needless to say the food and service was as amazing as always! Gemma and Thomas are wonderful hosts and deserve all the accolades they receive! Thank you both for a wonderful afternoon and impressing my uncultured brother!!

Excellent, highly recommended! Norwich has become a gastronomic centre and this Bistro is not to be missed for lovers of classic French cuisine.

We brought my father in law here for lunch as he’s always loved French food. He loved the gluten free Salade Lyonnaise followed by a top notch steak frites. The new (to me) filet de porc was delicious and a real winter warmer on a grey February day. Excellent service as always - we’re lucky to have L’Hexagone in Norwich.

So happy that you were able to squeeze us in tonight at the last minute as our plans unraveled, it was much appreciated! Delicious entrecôte and frites, and the dorade with beurre blanc sauce was equally yummy. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to sample the crème brûlée, which didn’t disappoint!! Thanks again guys!!

I’ve visited this restaurant at least ten times this year for either a light bite on my own (croque madam is my go-to!), a business lunch, a family meal and a romantic meal for two. The hospitality of the owners who are in the kitchen and front of house is lovely. The quality of the food ingredients and the care they are put together is fantastic. This is real, simple and delicious French cooking. By far and away the best casual dining experience in Norwich. A good (and well priced) wine list accompanies the small range of beautiful meals. Take your time and go slow here…. Soak it up and gobble it up! A special mention for the lentil salad and the bavette… I will try to branch out more in 2024!

Very overpriced food in a place lacking atmosphere. In it's defense, the steak was well cooked and seasoned but not exceptional and came with frites and a basic salad. The beef bourguignon was mediocre, lacking depth of flavour, small portion with not much beef swimming amongst the bland potatoes and sad looking carrots in a gloupy sauce. At half the price, I would have been mildly irritated but accepting. At this price, it needs to be better, much better than this. Sadly, this is gastronomically unrecognisable compared with any Parisian bistro. Merci, but not for us.

A wonderful experience. The service at L'Hexagone is warm and friendly. It's a place where you just feel immediately welcome and happy. My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous meal last night. Great simple food prepared with love and passion. The Boef Bouginon was perfect, while my wife enjoyed the steak frite.. We will definitely be back!

Went here again to celebrate just getting married and there isn’t anywhere else I would of rather celebrated. Thomas and Gemma are doing an amazing job serving simple French food with great service. People don’t understand how hard it actually is to serve simple food. The chef has no where to hide and it’s all down to the ingredients and the skill of the chef and Thomas definitely has the skill. The food and desserts we had were all brilliant especially the blue bavette steak I had I could eat that everyday. If you are in Norwich this is definitely a place you need to book a table at.

Wandering through Norwich my little boy (aged 10) remembered he had a soft spot for Norwich's finest Steak Frites and asked me to see if there was a table free at L'Hexagon. The gods smiled on us and there was a table for 2 free. We were time poor but had 60 minutes to enjoy the finest steak with sauce vert, an Orangina and a glass of silky smooth Cote du Rhone rouge. Perfect frites, melt in the mouth steak and the most exceptional welcome from Thomas and Gemma the owners. Every customer made to feel special and satisfied by the perfect lunch. What more can you ask for?

What a wonderful authentic French bistro experience. Only with gorgeous service and in a wonderful intimate restaurant in Norwich Lanes. We had the fabulous window seats and really enjoyed seeing the world go by. Gemma was a lovely hostess, kind attentive but not over bearing. We loved seeing Thomas work his socks off in the kitchen with passion and dedication. We had fabulous food, perfect French bistro cuisine. Nothing to fault. Can’t wait to return

After far too long since going there, went for lunch today. As we remembered, the welcome was warn, the ambience was just right, the service was great and the food and drink were top notch. I particularly liked the goats cheese tartine. A little gem of a restaurant. Won’t wait so long for the next visit.

The service was absolutely fabulous with a warm welcome by both the chef and waitress, we arrived for a friends birthday lunchtime booking and were promptly seated upstairs. All three of us ordered the bavette steak and frites and I must say this was fabulous, I’m not usually a steak fan but this was perfectly cooked medium rare, tender and delicious. The sauce verte was fabulous, even though I’m also not generally a fan of parsley! We were also offered some Dijon mustard for our fries which was a pleasant surprise, I always have mustard on my chips when I can!

Another trip to L'Hexagone and another amazing meal! Gemma and Thomas keep doing what you're doing, you're both wonderful people serving delicious food! Oh and on a side note, Pannal Cotta......! Absolutely cracking!
