Excellent fresh fish, beautifully cooked and served with chips. Eating straight away in the restaurant is the best way to enjoy.

I think it's the best battered fish, battered sausage and chips in the area. Mainly take-away and they've also got a tiny restaurant with "bring your own" wine or beer arrangement.

Feel very upset told me my food would be ready almost a half an hour later was letting other people that just arrived get their food before me I can only imagine it’s to do with my ethnicity very rude would not recommend to anybody that would have a similar experience as me

Very friendly well organized fish and chip shop with sustainably (MSC, Icelandic Responsible Fisheries) sourced fish. The small restaurant (seats 12) offers fresh tea by the pot and is a great alternative to eating in the car or hotel room (speaking from experience)! Medium chips portion will more than satisfy most people.

Super expensive, but that could be because I lived in Kent for 13 years before moving to France, where buying the same thing would have cost me about half the cost of this. Fish is great, we had a plaice and medium cod. Chips had just come out, and we're a tad under cooked.

Not impressed in all honesty. First time trying here and was waiting a good 25 mins for the food in a tiny little space with lots of people. Maybe instead of trying to squeeze more money out of people by having a seating area (that is charged at £2 per person) you could make it a better experience for your customers by having more room for them to wait. Found it to be quite expensive compared to other chip shops in surrounding towns, and portion sizes were not the best. A medium cod was smaller than my wife's foot (size 5), and the batter was very light in colour and quite tasteless (but milk is cheaper than eggs I guess). For the price I paid I could have taken the kids out for a meal (but it is generally frowned upon to measure food up against feet in public). To be honest it's hard to mess up fish and chips, but this place had a damn good try at it.

I was working in the area and about to drive back north and happened upon this fish and chip shop. I had a small fish and chips with mushy peas and my word it was outstanding. Every mouthful was heaven! Freshly cooked to order and in veggie friendly fat too. I wish this was on my doorstep. Nice staff too.

Still the best fish and chip shop/restaurant in Hertfordshire. We had a takeaway tonight. High quality food and trust me we know our food. Thanks for the fine dining.

Good chip shop but don't go though if you want a pie as they almost never have them. Also you can't ring up to order as they are engaged or don't answer the phone.

Excellent restaurant with three tables of two, four and six persons. Very cosy, warm and good atmosphere. Two independent doors for restaurant and take away. 10/10 in quality of fish, service and menu where there are infinite sizes you can choose for fish. Incredible butter, chips were amazing and sauces I have to say it was a plus. I am sure we will be back.

Good clean food. A little pricey but you'll get a good meal for £10 takeaway. Beware, there's a whopping £4 to £5 charge per person to eat in. This is really unfair. I think £1 tops per person is fair.

Very tiny portion of chips for the money. Medium chips not enough to fill a sandwich. Wouldn’t go there again. Been to Rotherham chip shop for less price and struggled to finish the portion. Definitely not good value for money.

Moved to area so first visit. It was very busy on a Tuesday night but worth the wait - light crispy batter and fabulous chips. The Irish curry source was lovely. You may well have to wait but as the sign says this is not fast food it is quality food. Thoroughly recommend.

After trying many fish and chip shops around Welwyn garden even Stevenage this place I’ve got to say has Toped the mark 10/10 on fish and the chips, would highly recommend the Irish curry sauce everything cooked to perfection and after ordering great with timing will definitely be returning prices are good for the quality of food

Omg Best fish ever, I was in the area staying in an Airbnb , we decided to visit this chop shop , once we arrived we decided to eat in, I absolutely love the fact the skin had been removed from the fish , Also the batter was so crispy and tasty, honestly the best fish & chips I’ve had in years , we’ve left the area now, but will 100% be back, it’s definitely worth the drive

Despite COVID The Lemon Plaice has marched on ensuring our favourite takeaway is available as always. Unlike some chippies they also take contactless - so you don't have to carry bundles of cash. Our tennis club regular places an order for 25 portions of F&C for our Friday Night Tennis Social. No other chippie in the area tastes so good. None of your greasy batter and chips. Everything cooked to perfection. The best example of an original British takeaway.

First time eating from The Lemon Plaice this evening but would highly recommend it. Very impressed with the quality of the chips - fresh, non-greasy, and quite light and fluffy (with the odd crunchy chip). It will probably become my local, go-to chippy now and without exaggerating or speaking too soon would say they serve the best chips in the Welwyn/WGC area.

People giving 5 stars, have clearly never left the village and tried other fish and chips....massively over priced for what it is. Scampi was overdone and a very small portion.... Chips were average at best and also a small portion in comparison with others. The only half decent thing was the gravy. Waited 50 minutes for it too, so Definitely won't be back.

Used to stay next door 50 years ago when owned by Polish gent,( visited just before lockdown in March) chips were good then and pleased to say they are now the best I have ever tasted, the lady was very pleasant and listened to an old mans ramblings patiently.

Lemon Plaice is a small family run restaurant and take away fish & chip shop. The evening we went the restaurant was full, so it’s worth booking in advance. As expected the food was good, good portion sizes, and we were served quickly. Very good value for five of us. The restaurant offers soft drinks, tea & coffee but doesn’t have a licence to sell alcohol, though I think you can take your own.

Great chip shop BUT on last 3 visits no pies left even at peak times. Advised to ring first so I did and nobody answered phone. Seem to be more concerned about cooking too many pies than satisfying customers who want them.

Firstly I must say a big congratulations to the owner. You can tell the care that has been put into the food and place. My Mum and I are heading home after a long day and to find this was such a piece of luck. The fish had quite possibly the lightest and crispiest batter. We decided to sit in which made the experience even better, partly because of a proper pot of tea :) Really well done and what a lucky bunch of locals you have! Will be seeing you again, not sure when mind but if I’m heading up the A1 I will take a detour.

The first time I've been and not the last. Best fish and chips ever. I usually get bored with chips and leave some but a clean plate this time. Cafe side is cosy with a relaxed atmosphere and well worth a visit.

On this occasion they got "easy on the vinegar, plenty of salt" the wrong way around but this is still the best chippy for miles, by miles 🎱

I Often go out for a meal in the evening or get a take away. Quite close to home appx. 3 miles. The fish and chips of good quality and were still warm on arrival at home. I will be going back.

Long queues during peak times, especially Friday nights. Food is very good quality though and cooked fresh to order. Not greasy like so many other chip shops.

I have travelled to many places in the UK and this is one of the best fish and chip takeaways I have been to. There is a restaurant attached to the takeaway but I have not tried it yet. This is a difficult and strange review to do because so much of the offering is very good. Also, I don't do reviews becasue they are generally for people with far too much time on their hands. However, I am doing this because the shop is worth my time to attempt to improve the customer experience. The fish and chips are exemplary and the chef (stubble, been there for years) takes great care and pride in producing a quality product. When you eventually get served the customer experience is ok. The thing that never fails to irritate is the complete and utter blanking of customers as they enter the shop. You stand around for what seems like an eternity with staff making no eye contact whatsoever with no acknowledgement of your existence. This week I stood for 15 minutes. There were not many in the shop. Rather than get annoyed I just stared at the staff waiting for some sign that I was not an alien. None was forthcoming. When the assistant accidently caught my gaze whilst returning to the counter she immediately looked away. It is as though they know that they are not communicating and are embarrassed by it. I have lost count of the number of times people in front of me have become annoyed and left the shop without buying. It happens at least 50% of the time that I visit when there is a queue. What they need to do is manage expectations. The cop out sign that is displayed in the shop saying that there may be a wait and that great fish and chips take time is simply not good enough. What needs to be done is not rocket science. Simply, as a customer joins the queue they should be greeted. They then should be informed whether anything that is currently cooking / cooked is available and then asked what they want. If it is not available the customer should be told that it will be 5/10/20/30 minutes or whatever until their food could be ready. Manage expectations, don't allow people to steam. If you did this I would come more often and your shop would not get so many walk outs. You are in a customer facing business. Please learn the rudiments of customer interaction.

When we moved to Welwyn, our very first meal on the moving in day was take away fish & chips washed down with a bottle of champagne.

I can't fault the food - there's a good selection, it's always cooked well, tastes good and the prices are reasonable. However the service is terrible. Anytime around tea time and there's a queue and a long wait. A few times now I've driven past and carried on as I can see it's going to be ages so they're missing out. I hope they read the comments and I mention it here because the problem can be easily addressed. For some curious reason they wait for each customers order to be processed and don't take orders before so you're waiting for ages in the queue when they could already have taken your order. It's frustrating.

One of the best fish and chip shops around. The fish is excellent and not greasy and chips made from select varieties of potatoes are also first class. You don't often get both. Choose your time as there can be a long queue.

I have used this Fish & Chip Restaurant for years. The quality is consistent and the food is tasty and fresh. It is very popular, especially on Friday from 5 to 7:00 pm - you can queue for up to half an hour for the take-away. The little restaurant is compact, very cosy, but good service. It isn't licensed as far as I know.

Following my previous review on a second visit for take-away fish and chips at a mid-week lunchtime, I was pleased to receive an absolute first-class service, together with the usually high quality of fish. The chips were cooked to perfection and the staff could not have been more helpful. Thank you and well done!

Ate here with group of family following day out elsewhere. Too tired to cook and had been recommended by friend. What a hidden gem. Food was freshly done to order and presented on lovely smart white china. Eating area is separate to the takeaway so not overwhelmed with frying. Good seating and all round fun. Basic and low key, so not right if you're looking for up market, but if you want great fish and chips this is perfect.

Have had take-away from here on several occasions. Its always good. Don't be put off if you have to wait .. much better as its freshly cooked. Good fish and chips, generous portions and friendly service

Our Chinese takeaway was unexpectedly closed and three hungry ladies decided to try fish and chips to eat at home in the garden.on a beautiful, hot summer evening. Three large cod & chips, served up with a smile before we rushed away to our outdoor venue. Delicious supper and would certainly use them again. I noticed that two tables in their restaurant area were occupied on this very warm evening.

Opening on a weekday at lunchtime between 12pm and 2pm this takeaway Fish and Chip shop had virtually nothing cooked at 12.30 and I was surprised that apart from chips everything else was cooked to order involving at least a 10 minute wait. My order of a large haddock and small ' well done' chips involved a 15 min wait. The haddock turned out to be well cooked and of excellent flavour however when I asked that the soggy chips wanted a couple more minutes in the Frier I was astounded to be told this was impossible as apparently these extra 2 minutes 'would burn all the fat!!!' Naturally I was not impressed.
