Fantastic from start to find, the chef/owner does everything from take your order to wash the dishes. Food is fresh and delightful, a must visit.

This restaurant has 4 tables and judging by the attitude and service of the main woman/front of house this is 4 tables too many for them to cope with. I wish we had read the reviews before we went as not only is the front of house lady the rudest and most appalling waitress I've ever encountered, the food was average and it was expensive for what it was. As I say don't waste your money unless you like being treated rudely by an incompetent and unfriendly waitress. Gordon Ramsey would have a field day with this one!

This restaurant needs to move into the modern age and learn the meaning of civility. When we booked a table at Le Moulin (in the name of Clarke) we were informed that they didn't accept cards so we would need to pay by cheque. On arrival we were met by a surly unhelpful member of staff who was reticent even to show us a table. As it turned out that we were not the the regular Clarkes they were expecting. They then informed us that we would have to pay by cash as cheque guarantee cards were no longer valid. They suggested we went to the local Tesco to get cash from an ATM. Additionally the restuarant smelt of cooking fumes. Guess what we did - we left!! Never been so insulted.

Perfect for romance, food was lovely, chef was friendly, This is our second time eating in this restaurant, The owner had 3 tables booked but for some reason the other 2 tables had cancelled so we had the restaurant to our self's, which was lovely as we felt we had our on private chef, the only problem we had was we were un able to pay pay card , its cash only. But we would return.

This is a duplicate of what I have just posted for the Wheathampstead entry as this is where the restaurant is located. Although I try and review restaurants I have eaten in the last week or two it is about three months since I last visited here. We tend to come here three or four times a year. The food is fantastic – cooked from fresh ingredients that I believe are sourced daily. Last time I had sea bass and my partner went for lamb. Both were excellent. Although at first glance some people may think the mains expensive the price is inclusive of potatoes and seasonal vegetables – not an additional £5 - £6 like some places. For dessert we had a pear tart with vanilla ice cream – absolutely delicious! With the meal we had a bottle of Pinot Grigio – again excellent and like the food chosen with care. We will definitely fit in another visit before Christmas. There have been a number of comments about the waitress here. This puzzles us as we have always found her quite polite. The only time I have seen her starting to show annoyance was when a customer complained that he had not got what he had ordered. He had! The problem was that he had read only the first few words of the menu item. Ignore the negative comments and enjoy some of the best food available in Hertfordshire. Highly recommended!

Food was pleasant enough, but a bit overpriced, and more importantly (and consistent with the comments above) the service was poor. The woman who was acting as the sole member of front of house staff didn't seem to know what any of the dishes on the menu were, and just referred every question we asked back to the chef. She then completely forgot to bring the glass of wine I had asked for, and when I reminded her, she didn't even seem to remember that I had ordered it. The icing on the cake was when the bill came - she informed us that she'd included a voucher entitling us to 25% off our next visit. At this point I mentioned that we also had a voucher to use for tonight's visit, entitling us to £30 off the bill (the voucher had been purchased online by my wife). The woman seemed quite put out by this and loudly exclaimed "oh no - you should have mentioned this when you booked". I told her that I was fairly sure my wife *had* mentioned it when she booked (my wife was in the bathroom at this point, and was as such unable to contribute). The woman simply replied "Well she didn't". She then said "Well, if you're going to use a voucher then I'll have to take the bill away again, as we're going to charge you for the bread" (we had eaten one slice of complementary bread each while waiting for our starters - we had not ordered any extra bread). I got halfway through my next sentence when the woman just turned around and walked off with the voucher. At this point I was feeling fairly bemused - this all seemed quite unnecessary and over the top. When my wife returned, the woman came back to the table and proceeded to question my wife loudly about when she had booked the table, again stating categorically that she had not mentioned the voucher as 'her partner would have written it down'. She then brought out the chef (her partner) and again challenged my wife. The chef, however, quickly accepted that he may well have forgotten to write it down and did vaguely remember talking to my wife on the phone. The waitress' attitude then suddenly changed, and she said "Oh, well, in that case it's okay. He gets forgetful when he's left here on his own". I was now feeling pretty p-ed off, especially as she now seemed quite content that the situation had been resolved. To cap it all, when the bill reappeared (this time with two slices of bread added), the '25% off' voucher for our next visit was no longer present. This whole experience left a sour taste in our mouths and we won't be going back. A shame, because the chef makes nice food, and seemed like a nice guy - all for nothing thanks to the attitude of the front of house staff. I (generally) really like small independent restaurants, and would seek them out in preference to an establishment that is part of a chain, but rudeness is rudeness and there's no excuse for it.

Disappointing is perhaps an understatement. On arrival only one table was occupied. When making our reservation we advised we had a Jack FM voucher, nowhere on the voucher did it stipulate you had to have a MINIMUM OF 2 COURSES - we've used these vouchers on several occasions before and this has never been the case. Attitude of waitress was not pleasant. There were just a choice of 3 desserts and since we did not opt for a starter we were according to the restaurant, obliged to have a dessert. My friend asked for a creme brulee but alas they never had any left. Never used the toilets, to do so, you had to walk through the kitchen via the stable like swing doors where the chef was cooking, not very hygenic and somewhat embarrassing. Whilst we were there just one more table was occupied. No offer of coffee and we left the near deserted restaurant before 9.30pm. On the food front, would say it was only mediocre, rather small portions but nicely presented. Never dined in a restaurant either where 'no credit cards are accepted'!!

Five of us visited this restaurant in July and I completely agree with the comment made by another reviewer that the waitress has an attitude problem. The food was decent, but from the moment we arrived (we were the only ones in the restaurant) we were treated like we were an inconvenience to the point of rudeness. I simply asked how the chicken (which came with a sauce) was cooked to which it was snapped back at me 'how do you want it cooked?' as if i'd just insulted her in some way. When the food arrived the steak was well done (we had asked for medium rare) which in itself is inconvenient but not a big issue. Unfortunately the waitress dumped it on the table and then left (and didn't come back for 40 minutes) by which time we had given up and eaten the steak anyway. When she came back she asked how the food was and we simply said that it was very nice but, for next time, she might just want to let the chef know that the steak was actually well done, although it still tasted lovely. Her response (which I am still reeling from) was 'Well you shouldn't have eaten it then' followed by 'don't think you're getting a discount'. The atmosphere was so uncomfortable we paid the bill (including for the steak) and left as fast as we could....... Obviously a number of people on this site have had a much better experience so perhaps they have different waitresses/she has some serious mood swings (?!) but really this was the worst experience I have ever had in any restaurant and I just couldn't recommend it. However, we were there on a tastecard so perhaps this was part of the reason (they may not make any money from meals on these?) however this still doesn't really justify the service we received.

I went to this restaurant with my dining group in July 2012, it was the best food that we have all experienced in a long while, and we have experienced plenty. The service was good and the waitress was very pleasant. It is a unique experience, a small intimate dining room in a listed building. It is not a chain restaurant, and doesn't pretend to be. So give it a go, you may be plesently surprised.

I don't think the previous reviewers get this restaurant at all. If you want a mass market experience go to Jamie's Italian if you want a waitress with a personality, a chef you can watch in action, and an intimate personal dining experience go to Le Moulin. We have not had better for £30 a head and visit regularly. Don't be put off by the previous reviews, if you are a fan of small, intimate restaurants with character and looking for something different with quality food give this place a chance.

The service here is the worst ever. The waitress has a problem and should not deal with the public. I would strongly urge people to,avoid this restaurant unless they want to go there for the entertainment factor of witnessing this vile woman with a personality disorder try and wait on tables. The chef Jeremy was squirming with her comments and was highly embarrassed by her behaviour. Saturday night and we were the only 2 people there ....says it all and I rest my case.

The evening was OK. Very small place, with only 4 tables in the main restaurant. The staff were OK. Food was somewhat disappointing. Not worth the £30 a head. Have to pay cash. No credit cards!?

My 19 yo son and his girlfriend booked Cote for their first year anniversary last night. Their meal was ok, although the macaron dessert was poor. It was so hard that they were unable to break into it and had to resort to picking it up by hand to try to bite into it. The inside was like hardened honeycomb. They did say the other dessert was fine, and hearing that it was their anniversary, the waiter gave them a glass of something fizzy on the house. Our big gripe is that, when they tried to pay the bill with cash, they were told cash was not accepted. My son was told to find a way of paying by card and had to leave the restaurant to ring me to ask for help. While he was out ringing me, the waiter asked my son's girlfriend how much they wanted to pay by cash. She said all of it and he walked away. When I arrived and spoke to the waiter, he said that he had been thinking that, if they had wanted to pay most by card and a small amount in cash, he would have accepted the cash from them and paid the cash element on his personal card. This was kind of him but probably against some rule or something, and he had not expressed this to them, nor had he offered them the option to split the bill between two cards if they could pay that way (which they could have). I queried the "no cash" policy and the waiter said it was company policy. I pointed out that it is not stated anywhere on their menu or inside or outside the restaurant that they do not accept cash. He agreed, and said that he thought it may be mentioned in the small print somewhere on their website. I have looked and can't find it, so if it is there, it's certainly not clear. While I was looking at the website, I also noticed that there are no prices listed on Cote's own website, although interestingly, prices appear on the menu link that can be accessed through Trip Advisor. Having recently eaten at Prime - just down the road - as a family, I would say the prices were comparable but the experience was far superior at Prime. Overall, the embarrassment that was caused spoiled what should have been a special evening for this young couple.
