Really disappointed with this place, we have been waiting 4 years to come here as my husband is Mauritian and everyone mentioned that this place is very authentic. As we walked in we were completely ignored by the two middle aged men behind the counter, and to my suprise there was a sign on the toilet saying 'out of use' so I couldn't even wash my hands. Everyone in the restuarant seemed very quiet and I could understand now as they were waiting to get the attention of the man serving. Finally after waiting 15 minutes got up and asked him about the food choices, he passed me a very limited menu and when asked to explain he proceeded to tell me that is it on the menu. When we ordered dhaal puri he asked one of us to pick it up from the counter, and refused to bring it over to the table. I thought if the food is amazing I will give an amazing review and let people know that the owners are very rude... But this was not the case the dhaal puri was completely tasteless and the fish biryani was like chewing gum it was sooo dry. I left the majority of my food and left swiftly. If anyone knows of any Mauritian places that are warm and beautiful as the people of the Mauritius are, please please let me know as travelling two hours for this was not what I expected at all...

Discovered Le Chamarela few years ago and been ordering Mauritian Biryani (tried chicken, beef and fish) over the years for birthdays/family gatherings. This time we ordered the special fried noodles. When we came to pick up, my boys were starving in the car so we sat down and had the dhall puri (yellow pancakes) each and it went down a treat. It was nice and warm on a cold day and brought up nice memories of my teenage years eating dhall puris by the roadside in Mauritius! The noodles were ready at the appointed time (ordered the day before by phone) and they were lovely for the party

I can only imagine that the one star reviews are from owners of other restaurants. It's even more likely that these Mauritians have been offended by the owner's unsmiling demeanor. Or even MORE likely, if you're Mauritian yourself, you'll know that plenty of Mauritians cannot but help bring their own people down when they're quite clearly successful and very good at what they do. Jealousy is not a useful trait. Visit this little restaurant with confidence. Over the last 3 years I've eaten various dishes from the menu: different versions of biryani, min frire, du riz frire, the different legumes, and - my favourite - bouillon crab, which was absolutely incredible. Come to think of it, I've had several curries at Chamarel too. I am also guilty of having eaten every single one of the desserts they have on offer, buying the puddin manioc far too many times. Even the salads and pickles are perfect. I am Mauritian - my grandmother and mum cook Mauritian food every single day - there is no way anyone can say that this food is not authentic Mauritian food! The gateau piment is so good that it's as though you've bought it from a street vendor in Camp Diable! It only feels expensive because in Mauritius we're used to paying 12 rupees (about 30p?) for a pair of dhall puri so paying ÂŁ2 here seems expensive. But it obviously isn't. Visit Le Chamarel and see for yourself! I'll be there (again) very soon.

Whoever is posting 5 star reviews of this place and saying this is “excellent Mauritian food” either don’t have tastebuds or don’t know what Mauritian food actually is. Absolutely appalling service, trying to charge us extra right in front of us, thinking that we didn’t understand creole? And the food wasn’t even worth it, not even in the slightest. Cold, dry, flavourless food. So disappointed that this is the Mauritian cuisine you are trying to sell to people. Not a good representation at all - with not only your food but also your behaviour and attitude. As a Mauritian, i’m embarrassed and EXTREMELY disappointed of the owners of this restaurant and the standard of the food
 or lack thereof.

We travelled from the other side of London to try Le Chamarel's Mauritian food (which is non-existent where I live) and I'm so glad we did. Their Covid takeaway service was well handled. My octopus rougaille was delicious and an amazing introduction to Mauritian food, while the Glenryck (pilchard) curry is incredible - I've never had a curry quite like it anywhere else. The homemade tamarind juice was wonderful and fresh, and it's worth trying as many of the interesting snacks and desserts (like taro fritters and cassava pudding) as you can. Portions and prices were great too. The food here is unpretentious, bold and masterfully flavoured; this is the kind of establishment all Londoners should cherish.

The ambiance is simple and it is mainly a take away, which gave me the hint that the focus is on food, good food. That was correct. Very lovely starters and dishes combining French, African, Indian and Chinese cuisines in various dishes. Very nice variety of food an all cooked well. The owner is very friendly and happy to tell everything about the cuisine and country and noticed that I enjoyed the spicy green sauce so much, that he give me a complimentary pot to take home!
