Visited this wonderful restaurant in the heart of Porlock in August, having done so 12 years before! We remembered the food being really good so thought it was a must to try again. Still run by the same couple who have mastered the art of teamwork! Food was perfect and service really personable. Great menu choice, well cooked and presented...as was the dessert.....it would have been rude not to try them!! Reserve your table ahead otherwise you will be disappointed! See you next year

Having walked past this restaurant a couple of times whilst staying in Oareford recently we thought it may be a nice place to dine one evening, it looked very inviting with a nice and varied menu. So, we did book a table and soo pleased that we did! It’s a lovely husband and wife run business with a real cosy and friendly atmosphere. We received a very warm welcome on arrival and escorted to our table. The menu is varied and offers most choices for all. We opted for the garlic prawns to start and the Sea Bass as main finished with a specials dessert of poached local pears. All in all the food was very nice, it’s not Michelin Star food but neither are the prices. If you are looking for a nice friendly restaurant that offers a good of very reasonably price food then this a certainly well worth a visit. Not sure however what if any GF options are available but obviously worth checking before you book. We will definitely go back here. A most unusual and unique restaurant to visit if you are in the area.

A favourite place of my wife and myself to dine of an evening when staying in Porlock. Run by Jan and Paul their food is all home cooked and their menu always includes a toast of the day. Fresh vegetables served none of your tinned or frozen vegetables here. If you have room for a pudding then try the pie of the day always made with fresh local fruit. Booking is a must and Jan an Paul do not accept card payment so take cash or cheque. We will be looking forward to returning to Lapsewood in 2022 and catching up with Jan's family.

Poor, unimaginative over-priced transport cafe food. The offerings had well cooked vegetables designed to fill the plate as the main was far from generous. My vegetable lasagna was sloppy and lacking in vegetables! My partner’s pork lion was small - the crackling being the best thing! Cheese and biscuits was basic and lacked anything you might be tempted by - cheap cheddar, Brie (possibly from Somerset) and Stilton all pre-cut into the smallest triangles. Must do better.

Though in our mid sixties we managed to bring the average age down by a good twenty years! The first impression of darkly varnished floor and tables, a deep plumb decorative motif, a "gods waiting room" clientele and an unsmiling "have you booked?" before any words of welcome all set the scene. This restaurant clearly hits the spot with some for it was busy and several guests were greeted as regulars but ..... weird touches included a 2017 year planner behind the bar, talking point Trivial Pursuit question cards on the table that included a question about what country Leipzig is in - answer "East Germany" and food that was so dull that it would be offensive to call in plain. To cap it all you have to have cash with you as they do not take debit cards but do not tell you that when you bookLots of places to eat in Porlock so why bother dining here?Went to The Ship pub for pudding - much better in every way

We ambled up and down Porlock high street looking for dinner and decided to come here, being attracted by its traditional air and no-nonsense menu, A very good decision. There was a no-nonsense lady inside who served us some excellent traditional English dishes, a pork loin roast and a gammon steak. The pork loin was accompanied by crisp crackling and roast potatoes. I opted for egg chips tomatoes and peas with the beloved gammon. Often chips are the Achilles heel of a restaurant, but these were perfectly browned, not over-thinly cut and they retained their freshness even as they cooled. A good full bodied house red and a bottle of Exmoor Gold were followed by two rich filter coffees. An excellent dinner for our last night on Exmoor - I would heartily recommend the Lapsewood for all lovers of no-nonsense.

We were hooked when we read the menu displayed outside. There were so many main courses that we could have enjoyed but the Venison Casserole, on a September evening that had a slight damp chill hint of Autumn, was irresistible. We were not disappointed the taste was just what we had hoped for and even though the portions were generous we could not pass up on a fruit pie and custard for dessert. The food quality was matched by the service could not be faulted, and when you consider there were only two people including the chef, it is an example to other restaurants of what can be achieved. On the evening we visited there was a constant stream of customers all of whom appeared to enjoy their meals and visit as much as we did.

Given menus fairly promptly but then no drinks order taken 20 mins later were asked for our food choices. it would have been good to have been able to have a glass of wine while waiting. It was 45 mins before our soup arrived, a broccoli and cheese, bread was extra. Not a very generous bowl of soup. No apology for the long wait. We both had fish of the day which was grilled and was quite good served with a tomato Mediterranean type sauce and a large portion of boiled potatoes, rice would have gone better with the sauce. The menu generally suitable for traditional eaters nothing very interesting and the puddings uninspiring, Not much atmosphere but I think we were both suprised that there was no concern from staff that we had to wait so long

I last ate here about 25 years ago and I don't think the menu or décor has changed since! Perhaps it is deliberate to keep the place in a time warp to make it stand out from the other places around. It definitely does that but it isn't anything special. Just plentiful portions of ordinary cooking without frills. I've looked through the window on various occasions and sometimes it has been full - mainly elderly people - but on the evening we ate there, there were just two other couples and you could have heard a pin drop. The lighting was poor and it created a pretty miserable atmosphere.I wouldn't choose it if I wanted the feel good factor when eating out.

We have ate in most of the eateries in Porlock, great food & drink here, Only minor issue is that they don't take card (need to rush to cashpoint mid meal) could be avoided with big sign or comment on arrival. Is worth the hassle as great food.

We had a couple of meals here during our recent stay and were very impressed with the quality of the food and the friendly service. The prices are higher than the Castle Hotel over the road and as I am always looking for good, cheap food I was a little unsure about trying it. It was recommended to us by the owners of the B&B Hunters Lodge so we tried it. The food and service was so good we went again the next night. If you are staying in Porlock then give it a go, you wont regret it. Best to book though as it was full both nights we were there.

My family and I have been visiting Lapsewood for a good number of years and it never disappoints. It is has the best home cooked food in the area and we always receive a warm friendly welcome. The evening roast and homemade pie is always a must. There is normally an evening special as well - the Horn and Prawn was excellent.

We were advised that this was a good place to get home cooked food and it did not disappoint. It is run by a husband and wife team and they are amazing. She runs front of house and he does the cooking. Everything we had was extremely good. My husband had the fish special (sea bass) and I had the vegetable lasagna with an extremely fresh salad of lettuce, tomato, green pepper, cucumber, grated carrot and celery. The apple and berry pie with custard afterwards was yummy.

Recommended by Myrtle Cottage owners, this small restaurant was full within an hour of opening, surely a recommendation in itself. Excellent cuisine - the venison casserole is an absolute must. Vegetables beautifully cooked. An energetic and incredibly efficient hostess. A brilliant evening out.

A flying visit to Porlock and we ate here both nights. The highlight was local cod with courgettes provencale and fresh vegetables, but the venison casserole scored 10 out of 10, as did the lamb roast and apple and damson pie with proper custard. Brilliant cook in the kitchen and a friendly face front of house - the perfect combination. Highly recommend.

Lovely food well cooked, the only downside was it was a little quiet that particular night. Would definitely go again though.

From outside and within, the decor belies the spectacular standard of mouth-watering home cooking awaiting you. Go with a large appetite as thankfully you will find none of your modern titchy, surrealist, messed-about-with plates of food here. Piping hot, freshly cooked "know-what-you're-eating" roasts, steaks, fish, etc., etc., etc. Equally tempting desserts which change depending on local availabilities, could include home-made apple and loganberry pie with custard. You'll get a warm, down to earth welcome from the hardworking host and her modest chef husband. Worth booking to make sure of your place. You won't regret a visit.

The food is freshly cooked, of excellent quality in what I would describe as British home cooked style. Roasts, casseroles, pies and proper puddings with custard! The wines are reasonably priced a are the meals themselves. The four of us went twice out of three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it

We had this lovely restaurant suggested by the B& B we stayed at and we were definitely not disappointed!!!! My husband had the venison casserole and it was wonderful and I had the sea bass special which was cooked just perfectly. We couldn't have been more pleased. Good local beer as well. I had been warned off the 'strong' Exmoor Beast by the B&B where we stayed so of course I had to try it and it was very good. They had option of room temperature or cold beer which was thoughtful. For dessert I had the rhubarb apple pie with custard and it was heavenly. I would go back in a heartbeat!!!!

We have been visiting Porlock for many years but have never visited Lapsewood before because from the outside it looks a little old fashioned. However over Easter we booked for Saturday evening. Well you know you've done well when the locals are eating there. Run by a husband and wife team she is front of house and he cooks with no other staff they are amazing. We had the sea bass, beef pie, rhubarb & apple pie and the cheese board. Fantastic food and service very good value and we will definitely be returning.

We ate here whilst staying last August at a B&B just around the corner (The Ship; also very good). Very friendly service, food great and portions generous! In particular the fish I had (sea bass) was cooked very well and tasted lovely. Would recommend to anyone staying locally.

Run by a couple with no other staff. She serves, he cooks. They do a blinding job. Although the restaurant may appear a little dated or old fashioned I feel it adds to it's charm. Roast dinner £8.95, local venison casserole I think was £12.95? You don't feel ripped off, just well fed at a fair price. My meal was tasty and I'd revisit without question.
