Our eager anticipation and excitement over the architectural renovation of Langdale Chase by Daniel Thwaites Brewery over the last two years sadly didn't match the Sunday Lunch experience on our visit on January 14th 2024. A pricey £55 per head for a three course lunch proved very disappointing. Sadly the meal was only pub fare and definitely not fine dining. We felt embarrassed for our friends we had invited to join us. Wine prices were off the scale with no house wine, or wine by the glass options. Wine prices started at a jaw dropping £50. Despite Langdale Chase being in the most romantic of settings, Daniel Thwaites need to do some serious thinking if they actually want the local support of comfortably off local residents. The three course menu was disappointing. Our starter selection of chowder despite having a hint of smoke contained no pieces of fish, just a creamy sauce. Main course Roast Beef was poorly presented, large slices of very rare beef with a layer of fat and gristle which required some work to cut, definitely not melt in the mouth, We were not asked how we preferred the beef. Also presentation of the vegetables was poor. Carrots were hard, and my wife found the roast potatoes unpleasant, giving up on the cold Yorkshire pudding also. My wife & l chose Passion fruit souffle with ice cream. Sadly no passion fruit was in evidence and no ice cream, just a white puddle in a tiny dish. We sent the Souffle back to the kitchen, only to endure a repeat performance of the same dish, no passion fruit and again no ice cream. Naturally we complained to front of house and the desert was removed from our bill. Overall a truly underwhelming experience, with some embarrassment for our invited guests who had travelled some distance. One of our party is a vegetarian and the only option starter and main involved goats cheese. No other choice was available. A very expensive mistake.

I’m afraid this refurbished hotel has a long way to go if it wants to attain a high quality starring. Our afternoon tea which was £45 a head was in a beautiful setting but that was the only positive point. The place was quiet with a lot of staff milling around who didn’t really know what they were doing. The waiter didn’t seem to know what Darjeeling tea was, the peppermint tea was in a bag, had to ask for sugar, had to ask for 4th pot of tea for 4th guest as it didn’t arrive, took a long time (15mins ) for the food to arrive by which time teas were cooling. No room on a table for everything so clattering around and moving things. They need a separate table next to sitting table to place all the items. As for the food. The chef is trying really hard but I’m afraid it was all false with food dyes and over managed . Looked like Christmas decorations that were hard and tasteless. A simple well made scone and cream, eclairs and ham sandwiches of high quality would be so much better. The potted shrimp was floating in oil in a green glaze dish …in all the hotel needs to redesign the afternoon tea completely . I’m sorry for this review but I think better to get it better early on as it’s only been open a week . £243 for 4 afternoon teas and 2 glasses of Prosecco with service charge included automatically…..thwaites need to rethink this. When we got married there 30 years ago it was higher quality food….a case of progress not being progress. Sorry but you have time to change this.

I found this hotel by accident when snow blocked the road and I was too exhausted to go on. From the moment I went through the door I was cared for and shown great kindness. I stayed for two nights in a beautiful hotel with the most amazing views. The service was excellent and the room large and very comfortable. I am looking forward to visiting again in better weather.

9 friends met for lunch. This is a monthly arrangement and we’ve eaten around south Lakeland where we live. Our visit today was beautiful not only gorgeous weather (ok a bit windy!) but we had the dining room to ourselves for most of our visit. Elegant dining room with stunning views of Windermere and the Lake District mountains. Excellent manager gave first rate service. Very varied menu which enabled the party to choose according to health needs and allergies. 6 of us chose the fish platter which was tasty and plenty to share between two. We were sorry to hear that the hotel closes on 2 September for 12 months to be fully refurbished but we will fit another visit in before it closes.

We booked here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary whilst on a stay in the Lakes. At time of booked we were asked if it was a special occasion to which we answered yes. On arrival on the day we were shown a choice of 2 tables in the restaurant. Whilst a lovely view it was roasting hot and there was no offer of a seat on the terrace outside. We ordered our drinks and meals. Starters arrived and were tasty, but only half the drinks had arrived. Mains arrived and we had to ask for the remainder of our drinks. We then asked if we could take our tea/coffee outside which was met with an “of course”. Whilst the view was outstanding I wouldn’t say this about the food, and in fact we have had tastier pub meals this week!

My family and I moved to the Lake District not so long ago, and Langdale Chase was a place that we had all been very excited to visit. Every time we drove past, I would be absolutely amazed. We were booked for lunch for 6 people. As we were parking, we had a peculiar encounter with a lady who questioned us in regard to why we were there. I assume this was to make sure that we were not random tourists taking advantage of the parking; we let her know that we were booked for lunch, but her mannerisms were not very polite. When we walked in, we were stood in the entrance for a while until the same lady turned up, and directed us to the bar. Again, it seemed a peculiar way of directing us, and impolite. The staff were very kind, but unfortunately, they were not very smart, polished, or professional. The food was not up to standard… sadly, it was revolting. The chicken didn’t taste very well, and the potatoes were incredibly hard - I struggled to use my knife to cut them, and frankly, a very blunt knife didn’t help. I am very observant indeed, and I could spot dust and hair in my water glass, and wine glasses. I did, however, enjoy the cocktails. They were absolutely delicious. Overall, this is a place that I will visit again for cocktails, but cocktails only - for the time being. I believe that Langdale Chase has potential and room for improvement, and I do hope that this will happen in the near future, as it is such a magnificent place, in a spectacular location. I believe better management is the answer…

Visited for a family meal. We have been seated by lady on table for four. The tabletop wobbled and it was impossible to keep your hands on the table. There was no drinks menu (although there was an extensive wine menu). So we went to the bar to order drinks. The drink didn't come out of the bar for about 15 minutes and we went to look for lost one by. The bartender clearly forgot about the order (which happens). Starters and mains from a la carte menu were good. Dicent portions and we we almost happy. Plates and cutlery been cleared right at time. But service is not welcoming at all. Seemed like someone forced them to served as. Couple of requests been forgotten by yang lad. If you position yourself as a good restaurant, you should invest in staff training.

Having seen the billboards outside the entrance, we decided to pop in for afternoon tea on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The signs were good as we entered the stunning wood-panelled hallway and were greeted by the crackle of a blazing log fire. That's where the positives end. My husband, I and our child stood around for about 5 minutes in wet coats for someone to assist us and show us to the restaurant. There was a member of staff checking in a couple but clearly he was far too busy to pause and say that someone would be with us in a minute. So we waited... Eventually we were shown through a nondescript bar, situated near a draughty-looking characterless conservatory, to the half-empty dining room; it was obvious that it hadn't been decorated or re-carpeted since my last visit, circa 1997. We were seated and eventually our order was taken: two adult afternoon teas (at almost £28 each), a children's afternoon tea (almost £16), a pot of tea for two and an apple juice for our son. When the drinks were served by an unsmiling and unfriendly waitress, we were too busy sorting out the nipper to notice that no milk had been brought for the tea. It was another five minutes before we could attract the attention of a member of staff as she were busy laying the tables for dinner. By this time the tea was warm, not hot. Our 6 year old was happy with his food which arrived on a wooden bench. Ours was disappointing. We each had two small rectangular sandwiches, one filled with ham and pickle, the other smoked salmon. There was a small wrap filled with what seemed like only lettuce and was tasteless. Apart from a small sausage roll, that was it as far as savouries went. The cake selection was underwhelming: a fruit scone and a tasteless plain scone, some sort of green tasteless swirly thing, a tiny cheesecake in a glass and a small, seemingly stale, choux bun with some sort of unidentifiable red stuff splodged on top. The highlight was the Kendal mint cake brownie. Nobody came to check whether we needed anything else or whether everything was OK. We asked for another pot of tea and were horrified when this appeared on the bill (£4.30) as well as our boy's apple juice!!!! It seems that children's drinks are not included in the price of their afternoon tea; this was not pointed out when we ordered. Our bill came to an extortionate £87.29 and there was space for a tip! Here's our tip: be more friendly towards your guests. We worked hard to earn the money to enjoy this special treat; include drinks in the price; redecorate; welcome your guests on arrival and take coats - it was no fun having to sit next to our wet outer garments; be more generous and more adventurous with the afternoon tea. We will not be returning to this unfriendly, overrated and expensive venue. If it wasn't for the views and its situation on the lake, the Langdale Chase would have very little going for it.

Friends booked here for lunch to celebrate an 80th birthday and when we arrived a message board outside informed us the restaurant was fully booked. Our table was booked for 1pm but arrived early and we thought with the place being fully booked, there would be a cosy and lively atmosphere in the restaurant which would have been nice. It turned out we were the only four people in a cold restaurant but after asking they turned up the heat. We made our food choice from a limited menu, lobster, beef burger and lakeside sharing plate, and had drinks while we waited. Our food arrived and was mediocre to say the least and my husband and I were expected to use our side plates for the main course of the fish plate. After out main course we were offered the dessert menu but as our friend, whose birthday it was is diabetic, there was nothing he could eat. When the server came for the order we asked if he could have cheese and biscuits as he was diabetic, only to be told “if it’s not on the menu, then you can’t have it”. We were amazed then she offered a fruit salad which also not on the menu!! We declined feeling very disappointed about the whole situation and what should have been a special celebration for an octogenarian, turned out to be a huge disappointment. Surely a four star hotel could rustle up cheese and biscuits and two proper plates for the sharing dish!!! Anyway, by the time we left the “fully booked restaurant” had only only four more people eating. Hope they had a better experience!

The biggest sell of this restaurant are the amazing views over Lake Windermere. Wished we had got here a little earlier to walk around the lakeside grounds. The decor is a little dated however to reach the restaurant you do walk through oak panelled lounge rooms so it would seem a bit out of place if the restaurant was too modern. It’s a fairly formal atmosphere and prices are on the expensive side however we enjoyed our 3 course meals. Our mains were grilled halibut and shrimps (a bit dear at £28) and the pork main( the pork belly was delicious). A good place for a treat!

The overall dining experience during our visit was very good and breakfast was especially enjoyable.Unfortunately the 'main' dishes were a bit hit and miss and you would probably be disappointed if you were paying full price and it wasn't part of a package (you get £35 for your evening meal). One of our party had the Halibut at £28.50 and I sampled some of it. It was dry. Most dishes I really enjoyed with only one exception.I couldn't understand why rolls were brought out pre-meal and chef's butter of the day was introduced with just one quenelle provided, enough to fit on a teaspoon. As I say, our overall dining experience was very good and the restaurant front of house manager did ask for and took an interest in our feedback.

As it had been quite a while since our last visit to The Langdale Chase hotel for a meal my wife and myself decided to pay a visit for Saturday lunch. We had not made a reservation to dine on the terrace, given the current situation that was rather silly I know; but maître d'hôtel, Chris was extremely helpful and accommodating managing to arrange a great table with only the slightest of delay. The Terrace at Langdale Chase has to be one of the most beautiful dining locations in the Lake District with the incomparable vista of the Langdale Pikes rising above Windermere. Now the restaurant has a menu that is equal to the view!Even though the current situation meant that the menu was a little truncated, it was still difficult to make a choice but we finally settled on the Lake Platter to share. What arrived at our table was one of the best conceived, best prepared, best presented and best tasting sea food platters that we have ever enjoyed. That we were lucky enough to enjoy it on our own doorstep in such a beautiful location was a real bonus. Two AA Rosette Chef Daniel Hopkins is certainly making his mark in the district with really imaginative food crafted superbly from the wide variety of excellent quality local produce that is perfectly complimented by an extensive cellar and well-selected beers.I'm not sure how we managed it but we both made a selection from the desert menu. So glad we did! A brilliant variation on the tradition Eaton Mess and the scummiest of 'specials. Had we been wearing them, both of our hats would have been take off in deference to the Pastry Chef. Two perfect plates that excited the eyes and most definitely seduced the palette. What a star she is!The disappointment of two empty desert plates was held in temporary abeyance by two delightful and delicious coffees. A perfect conclusion to a perfect lunch - well actually, the perfect conclusion was making a booking with Chris for lunch the following weekend. Let's hope the weather is going to be as accommodating as The Langdale Chase? The hotel is one of the great landmark historic buildings in the district, the restaurant is led by a Chef determined to provide guests with the best quality local produce skilfully crafted and presented at reasonable prices and the Front-of-House Team exude a professionalism that really makes guests feel extremely welcome. But, don't take our word for it - go and try it for yourself! We went for morning coffee with a view to having lunch. Rang the bell upon arrival to be seated and no-one came so we seated ourselves. It was clear there was a complete lack of staff and leadership until noon. We ordered a cream tea and a Cappucino. The cream tea arrived after about 10 minutes and we were told the drinks were in a queue. Cream tea was finished and still no drinks. Drinks finally arrived at least half an hour after delivery of the cream tea and could only be described as 'warm'. At £4.20 for an individual cup and to serve a cream tea at least half an hour before the drink arrived was unacceptable. We explained to the waitress that the drinks appeared not hot enough. She removed them and returned with replacements and said she had made them exactly the same as the first ones! 'Drink it and shut up sprung to mind!'.It was passable being slightly hotter than the last ones. We appreciated there were only 2 staff on until others arrived at about 12. However, we watched whilst the other staff that arrived later tottered up and down the concrete steps to the wooden enclosure carrying afternoon teas. Who these were for, we have no idea but they seemed to reappear again shortly after and were taken into the kitchen. They seemed to have no concept of the situation as a guest. Aside from the magnificent view, the service was abysmal. It was clear however that the 2 waitresses on for breakfast could not cope, this did not seem to be their fault, it wasnt managed properly and it was very awkward to be part of

We booked a family meal on the terrace (as only outdoor eating is permitted at present). Very friendly and welcoming staff and stunning views over the lake. We were lucky with the weather and if it’s warm or sunny the terrace is definitely recommended. The food was ok - nothing special and a bit limited for choice but that may be understandable given we were only a couple of days into re-opening after the latest lockdown. Also I don’t think the full choice of real ale was available either - probably for similar reasons. It was reasonable value for money. But definitely worth a visit for the setting alone or just a drink.

After making a prior telephone enquiry with the Langdale Chase in respect of the possibility of a ‘dairy & chocolate free’ Afternoon Tea, and being assured by the receptionist that it would not pose a problem, I duly made a reservation a few weeks later for our small party of 3, reminding her that 1 of which was the ‘dairy free & chocolate’ Afternoon Tea.However, and after looking forward to our treat in a lovely and renowned Lakeland Hotel, for some weeks, I have to say that our special visit was soon cut short.Firstly, the waitress presented the table with 2 Afternoon teas, one of which she announced was ‘chocolate free’, before she managed to knock over a freshly poured cup of black tea all over the crisp white linen tablecloth. However, we realise that we all make mistakes, and sympathised and assisted her with the clearing up. I informed her that only 1 of the AT’s was requested as ‘dairy & chocolate free’, and she duly returned with another, ie the 3rd AT which contained 3 or 4 slices of chocolate cake. She was reminded of our pre-order requirements, and she returned to the table again to inform us that the chocolate cake was made from cocoa, and that it did not contain any dairy! I explained to her that the cocoa element was the problem, ie it is a migraine trigger, and that the dairy element was a digestive problem. She then returned to inform us that the kitchen had informed her that there was nothing available which was dairy free, and they suggested that I order an alternative from the lunch menu, which I did. Whilst a fish finger sandwich and fries are fine, it was not quite what I had (a) ordered in advance of our visit, (b) been informed was no problem, and (c) the experience that I had been looking forward to sharing with my friends. I can eat a fish finger sandwich any day of the week at home. When preparing to leave, I approached the bar to pay for 2 glasses of prosecco which we had ordered on arrival. The polite barman duly informed me that they were ‘complimentary’ on account of the error over our Afternoon tea. He also said that the message ‘just hadn’t reached the kitchen’! On the bar, was a clipboard with the bookings for the afternoon, which clearly showed our table, as 2 AT’s + 1 AT ‘dairy and choc free’, which was also highlighted with a marker pen.I have to say that we will not be returning to the Langdale Chase Hotel, nor will we recommend it to our friends and family. Our 120-mile round trip was an absolute waste of time and money! It was so disappointing! Before returning home later that afternoon, we visited the Lakeland kitchen shop, which is situated near the train station in Windermere, and guess what, we had tea and ‘diary & chocolate free’ cake (almond & orange) – no problem at all there. So, a big thank you to them. And, it was delicious too!!

I was shocked by the response. I was told that they could not provide the afternoon tea as it was not 'economic' , but they could provide soup and sandwiches! I explained that I had booked the Afternoon Tea and not soup and sandwiches! I rang on three separate occasions asking them to reconsider. I was told I could have my money back or soup and sandwiches. I found the hotel unhelpful and not sympathetic to dietary needs. As a result, I have asked Travel Zoo for a refund.

A lovely setting overlooking the lake and I guess that’s what you pay for. However the food was disappointing. We had recently had Afternoon tea at The a Gilpin which was fantastic and expected the same standard. The photos advertising the ‘experience’ are different from the actual thing. No miniature jellies. No Macarons. No salmon sandwiches. Instead we were given chunky sandwiches, large slabs of ( not nice) carrot cake which we left and pieces of fudge! The cream with the scones was off. And tea bags in pots. The staff all disappeared and we had to search for someone to get more hot water. We tried to find someone as we were leaving to give our vouchers to but in the end just left.On the plus side the champagne was ok . As were the little scones themselves. We expected exquisite baking, presentation and tastes. Got non of those.I think they rely on the name of the hotel and it’s previous reputation. We didn’t stay there so couldn’t comment on that.

The Langdale Chase is a lovely old country house which I believe as with many in The Lake District has been converted into a hotel which is dog friendly, and has sweeping gardens down to the lake side and a lovely terrace where meals and drinks can be taken. The hall is exceptional, with a real log fire in winter, and where afternoon tea can also be taken if you wish. The staff are very friendly, and we had afternoon tea in the hall rather than outside on the terrace or in a lounge. We have stayed here several times over the years but not recently enough to report on the bedrooms though I am confident they will be good - however we and been back for afternoon tea several times. The food was served on a three tier cake stand which as on lots of occasions never looks enough, that is until you start to eat your way through it! It was priced at about right given the lovely location, though at these prices a little more attention to the small things should be de rigueur. A pot of hot water so that you are not waiting for a waiter to freshen your tea pot up, a couple of additional plates and cutlery so that sandwiches and cream cakes/scones can each be eaten on clean plates, and a greater selection of actual tea would be welcome. That said we will return.

Bar meals can be taken in the conservatory or the bar itself. The conservatory overlooks part of the landscaped gardens, the boathouse, lake and far side including the Langdales. Worth the price of the meal just to sit there, especially if you can obtain a window table. Service is friendly and prices not much different to anywhere in the Lakes, varied menu of reasonable quality, afternoon tea and cream teas are available, full bar. The main restaurant also has a long wall completely windowed facing the lake, but the evening meal is a fixed menu with a choice of approx. 3 per course and is rather more expensive. Other guests told us that the restaurant was so warm the day that we arrived that the heating had to be turned down, but on our second day, it was difficult to find anywhere warm, though the staff tried to sort it out, but it was the third day before it became comfortable again. On that second day, people were wearing their coats inside and many guests ate out, control of the heating is something the management need to address for their own benefit as well as for their customers. There is a large car park, but can be busy if a function is taking place. One step at entry, otherwise all on one level.

This hotel does not live up to first impressions. On the plus side the lakeside setting is amazing and the gardens are beautiful. We were initially delighted with our room in the Lake House as it was spacious, the bathroom was lovely and the view from the balcony was stunning. However, on closer inspection one of the chairs had a nasty split in the wood and the cushion on dressing table stool was in dire need of repair. There was a coffee maker (which used pods), but a meagre offering of tea bags and coffee on the tray on the other side of the room and no fresh milk or biscuits which should have been included in the room given the fact the rate was £170 per night. Breakfast was very poor and really would not have been out of place in a motorway service station. I expected a wide selection of fresh fruits, yogurts, cereals etc but there was a very limited range on offer. The hot part of the breakfast was very unappetising, as it was not freshly cooked to order, as I was expecting, but was already out in warming dishes, looking pale and definitely uninteresting. Also the carpet in the breakfast room was stained and urgently needs replacing.

My fiancé and I loved Langdale Chase and planned to have our wedding there . . . until we tried the food. Under-ripe melon, tasteless soup, leathery beef could possibly have been forgiven in view of the lovely setting and friendly staff, but whilst the chicken was good, both desserts were terrible. I had tarte au citron, which had curdled, and had the texture of sweet scrambled egg. The pastry underneath was soggy. The Australian pavlova roulade bore zero resemblance to a roulade at all - instead we were served three lumps of sweet, slimy foam. Very, very unpleasant - however in fairness we then asked to try the sticky toffee pudding which wasn't charged to us and tasted fine. Unfortunately we weren't able to discuss the issues with Andrew (the manager/wedding coordinator) at the time because he was finishing for the day, but generally he was really helpful and always came back with responses to questions very quickly. It's such a shame because Langdale Chase would be a beautiful, special place to get married and we were tempted to overlook the issues with the food . . . but, coupled with the fact that although spacious and many with beautiful aspects, the bedrooms in the main building are dated and tired, we sadly decided to look elsewhere and we found there are several more hotels in the lakes with equally lovely settings/right on the waters edge with good food.I think Langdale Chase would be a magnificent place if the décor in the bedrooms were brought up to scratch and food served to a consistently good standard . . . but it's not quite there in our experience.

Having had a trip on the Lake we decided to round off the day with dinner at the Langdale Chase - a favourite spot for coffee/light lunches and teas - especially in the conservatory. We anticipated dining in the dining room, but possibly due to a wedding the next day we were to dine in the conservatory. The menu was fixed at £39 per head. Three of us chose the cod as our main course after a tasty Goat's cheese 'mousse'. I have to say this was not very warm but had clearly been kept 'warm' under lights which had overcooked the top so it was difficult to remove the skin. I finished with a rhubarb mousse, which was slightly too sweet for my taste - I do like tarty fruits - but light and delicious. As this was to be the highlight of our three day visit to the Lakes I felt disappointed. I have known the Langdale Chase for some 50 years always as a top class establishment. No doubt we will return because of the wonderful lakeside position and views up the lake to the Langdales

Our daughters Wedding was held at the hotel on February 22nd. The whole experience was simply magical due in no small part to Andrew and his staff who provided outstanding service, nothing was to much trouble. The hotels facilities are the last word in comfort and homeliness the breakfast were a delight as we're the dinners. Our room was spacious and so well appointed, with the added bonus of spectacular views across the lake and beyond.Thank you everyone!

We visited here one evening recently for a bar meal. We entered the hotel, couldn't see any staff, but managed to find our way to a smallish, very dark bar at the back of the hotel. There was no-one there, staff or guests, but pretty soon a waiter arrived and served us drinks and gave us the menu. My husband noticed a dimmer switch which brightened things up slightly. The lighting that is, not the atmosphere. The decor is dated and made worse by the dark wood panelling and poor lighting. Not very wlecoming at all.We had noticed a few people in the main restaurant, but as the waiter told us, it was a quiet night, with just four rooms booked, which would explain the absence of other people in the bar. To be fair, the conservatory was closed for refurbishment, so our experience may have been better if we'd eaten in there. The food was ok, nothing more than that, and I wasn't too keen on the wine coming in individual bottles. I would have expected better from a hotel of it's size. From our experience that evening I would say it's unlikely that we'll go there again.

We stopped here for an unplanned late lunch/early dinner having previously driven past the place hundreds of times. We also got lucky that we chose a warm and sunny day at the end of September and were able to sit outside on the raised terrace. The views across Windermere were absolutely beautiful. It was an amazing place to sit and eat their lovely sandwiches, drink tea/coffee and we treated ourselves to a scone and a brownie. The service was top-notch, everybody was very friendly and made us want to return. After eating, we walked around the well maintained gardens down toward Windermere shore. The entrance and downstairs rooms are very attractive with lots of wood panelling. Would be nice to stay in the hotel one day and get to enjoy the top-notch professional service, food and drink on offer.
