Found this place by chance after travelling from Wakefield. Best fish and chips by far! Quality, quantity, cost and taste. I'm really fussy when it comes to fish and chips yet now I intentionally travel 30 minutes from my house to get these fish and chips. I've just discovered Lane's have changed their name to Captains. Not sure if it's new ownership. So I don't know if the food, quantity, quality and service is as good as it was before. I'll repost, once I've tried it.

Love this little shop. The food is always spot on for us and the ladies who run it are always ready with a smile and a chat. Would highly recommend

Hi. We came on a 157 mile run to deliver a trike. We stopped to get some fish and chips. We both want to say that it was he best fish and chips and scallops ever. Please of anyone is thinking of coming here for amazing quality food and polite amazing staff. Please do not hesitate. The two cheeky chaps last night who asked if you do spam fritters. Sorry we didnt mean to offend lol. But hope the 80p tip helped. Would have given more if knew how good your food was. Simply amazing. If ever we are in a radius of 40miles, we are coming to you. Excellent service, great prices. Tasty food. This is the first fish and chips I've had where there's no oil dripping on my plate. It's was fried really good. My only criticism... The fish was thin... I would prefer a smaller/ thicker fish But it hasn't put me off and I understand the fish are cut in a certain way Will be back...Thank you for the great service as well

Best fish and chips by far, join the que (which can be quite long). Long time family run business. Happy friendly staff , community spirit and kindness. All make this place a great place to get food from.

Brilliant and good portion sizes. Really nice fish, with good batter. Mushy peas are great. But chip portions are a bit small. The staff are engaging and friendly.

Had to find a new place in pontefract to treat our nan today. We had come from Leeds so don't know the are that well. Very pleased with the lovely white fish,perfect chips large portions and great service. I must say the girls serving today didn't want to sing with me but that's OK. In all very very RESPECTABLE. From Pepsi and Shirley ;) No egg on your windows tonight

First time here, the fish was slushy, not enjoyable at all, don't know if it was a one off.

My Good Lady receiving treatment down in Pontefract Hospital, whilst I was kicking my heels, decided to seek out some comfort food. Called in here, small shack on a corner! Imagine my surprise... Two friendly (Very pretty, forgive me!) Ladies fried me up the most enormous white, flaky fish I've ever had, along with gorgeous chips, and beefy gravy. I do recommend that you too seek this out, you will not be disappointed, promise! P.S. I know about Fish & Chips......

As usual Lanes fish and chips were delicious we dont buy them from any where else.

Best fish and chips in the Pontefract area by far. There isnt that greasy after taste like you get after eating some fish and chips you buy. The staff are very polite and you get very good portions. Anyone writing a bad review must have an hidden agenda...

Visit the Lanes Fish Shop on Baghill every Friday night without fail. Fish and Chips twice with a large peas and never ever disappoints, lovely staff very polite and so lovely to talk to! Wouldn’t recommend any other fish shop around the area - this is the place to be! Thanks Ladies :)

First visit and will not be going back. The batter on the fish was very thick and greasy. They left a greasy film in your mouth. Not the cheapest fish and chips and poor quality.

Found a hair in my chips. That is the end of that one.

We travel 6 miles to this fish shop passing many others. This is bar far the best and staff are always lovely and friendly.

Best chippy I've been to in ages! Fish was fried to order, chips were hot and fresh and the ladies who served us were lovely and friendly. Excellent value for money and I will definitely return to one of the best chippies in Ponte!

I used to go here as they used to be polite and pleasant! But at my last visit, I was served abruptly and spoken to in a rude and abrupt way, more or else thrown the items I'd bought at me! I now go to knight's on Horsefair, I get respect and politeness when I go in!

The service was amazing here. Lovely, pleasant young lady serving and a smiley lady cooking. It's £1.75 for a bag of chips, reasonable. I went in just prior to closing and I was a little disappointed in the chips so I'm going to go at a better time. I wanted to rave about the service tho as I was overly impressed!

excellent chippy best in ponty...noticed someone dissed it but then wrote glowing review for paiges chippy 2 minutes away.... where nobody ever goes...you try once never again...me thinks that someone has some interest in Paiges a bit too obvious

Absolutely love fish & Chips with curry or peas. The battered sausage is nice and crispy. The service is second to none. Gets quite busy at times. That surely reflects how nice the food is
