LaiLing Cantonese Restaurant in Birmingham

Friends and I booked a table for dinner. We had all been plenty of times before and we made a silly error in reading these reviews prior to going but we all made the decision to go anyway. I'm so glad we did. The welcome was warm, the food was fresh and plentiful. We were stuffed!! And the restaurant was so busy, not an empty table in sight, so I'm not sure the other reviewers were in the same place!! It was great and I definitely won't leave it so long to visit again. 😊👏

This spot has the best good which is such amazing quality and such good value, I LOVE IT, they lady seems lovely and her child is around 5 and looks like he has a whale of a time colouring and making friends with other children there, plus he is so helpful!

I am so sad because i love eating at lai lings but i cant find anybody that will go with me. This is due to what i spoke of previously, the woman front of house. She rushes you like i have never been rushed before, she even told a couple off for asking for a clean plate stating " you must keep the same plate throughout your meal. If she is the owner there is nothing to be done but 100% she will lose her business. Somebody asked for ice in their drink and she actually charged them 20p lol. They have taken all the tableclothes off and so it now resembles a canteen. What a shame. They obviously do not care because the reviews are terrible yet they still do not take any notice of them and try to correct the problems. She could give basil fawlty a run for his money.

Great food and the staff were really lovely. We were a bit concerned after reading reviews but we had fabulous food and service. Kept being asked if we wanted more food and nothing was too much trouble. We will definately be returning.

The takeaway I had was chicken satay but it was just chicken, sauce, onion and a few strips of carrot - disappointing considering previous visits to the buffet were good

I dont think i have ever been so rushed to order my food ever, to the point it made us all laugh. My children hated it, all 4 of us felt the same, staff were so rude, food weak, meat chewy. They genuinely need to remove the lady from front of house she will drive your customers away for sure. Would be sad for it to close again.

If I could give this restaurant 0 I would. Non-existent customer service. We explained that my daughter is very fussy and would only eat a very small amount so £ 21 seemed a bit steep, the staff offered no alternative, so we paid £10 for chicken balls thinking she could share some of our rice. When our starters arrived my 11 yr old daughter decided to try a spring roll (a very mini spring roll) The owner came over and shouted at us that we had not paid for an all you can eat option. They made us feel so uncomfortable and that we had committed a crime, we went to celebrate my son's 14th Birthday which this restaurant managed to ruin. Thank you Lai Ling I now have 2 distraught and hungry children. Avoid this place like the plague, I wish I had read the reviews....

Booked a table which was easy but on entering the ‘restaurant’ we were greeted by no carpet, no table cloths and no chopsticks. On ordering starters from the Buffett Menu we were advised that food and drink had to be paid for in advance of being served. Perhaps not surprising when you actually experience the food. The staff are miserable and give the impression that they would rather be elsewhere. The lemon and honey chicken was dry with no sauce and appeared to have been previously cooked and microwaved. The wontons were all wrapper and no filling! The ice cream was fine but the overall experience was shameful and the ‘restaurant’ has absolutely no atmosphere and is not the experience which you would hope for. However on asking, we were provided with chopsticks. Avoid.

Love this place and would highly recommend to anyone!! Will be going back for my birthday soon and can't wait. This place puts other buffets (that I've been to) to shame 😂

Fourth & last visit ! . The quality of the food has been getting worse over the past few visits , this will be the last visit .

Very basic decor and smiles from staff were non existent…. We were told we had to pay upfront for drinks and food ? Food ok not exceptional and very small portions! The plates were the size of side plates ! And the rice was £5 a bowl for 1 person!! . Huge rip off as again it was nothing special they need to learn customer service and how a smile costs nothing felt like they were doing us a favour! They are the only sit down Chinese restaurant in the area and that’s probably why they survive but if another place opened I’m certain they wouldn’t ! we shall not be revisiting would rather use the chippy over the road !

It was our 33rd wedding anniversary and we looked for somewhere local to eat Cantonese.we didn’t give lailing a thought although it’s very local because we used to go there years ago and although it was very good then it deteriorated badly.we decided to visit it and take a look in the daytime.we noted the 5 stars on the door and took a look inside.it looked so nice we made a booking and went along.what a pleasant surprise.firstly its location is nestled in front of the beautiful lickey hills.and the staff and the food was lovely.we opted for the all you can eat buffet.great choice .for 23.50 you get an unlimited amount of food piping hot and cooked to perfection.also we were not rushed.we are so pleased to have rediscovered this place again and will definitely be returning with our family and will also be ordering takeaway as they deliver too.

Nothing to praise, could probably cook the same standard of food at home if I'd have followed a YouTube video. Sold as a buffet but food is cooked to order via order through a waiter therefore limits buffet style delivery.

Enjoyed a meal with family at lai ling. BUT!!! we have received a parking fine for apparently not entering our car reg on the machine in the restaurant when I definitely did. This same thing happened to my sister a few months earlier. I have appealed and they are not interested. Also looking at the reviews on here, I can see this Is happening a lot. This has definitely put us off going there again, we are local and have used this restaurant alot. NO MORE. Another £60 on top of the bill is a joke.

I wouldn't let all the negative reviews deter you. Me, my family and my boyfriend have all being coming here for about two years. Great value for money. Lovely choice of options everything is cooked to order. People are complaining about portion sizes but you can order as much as you want? This is one of the best Chinese places I've been to and everyone I go with agrees. They do the best yuk sung I've ever had. And to the people complaining that it would've cost less if they'd ordered individual dishes. Maybe go somewhere that isn't a buffet only restaurant then? You decided to pay for it instead of going elsewhere that's on you. Never had any issues with the parking just sounds like a temporary issue.

Massive disappointment; rather like eating mediocre food in a cold canteen. Amazed that we had to pay for our food before eating anything; I guess they've had some bad experiences to warrant this. Very disappointed to only be offered a buffet menu, at £21.99 per head. Four of us ordered 1 starter each and 1 main course. £88 for the food we had was expensive. I now see that the website shows an individual priced menu. Our dishes would have cost £61 in total if we'd been given this menu! I had the chicken chow mein and one of our group had the pork chow mein. We both said the noodles were dry and tasteless, , with hardly any meat, so asked for soy sauce which made them much tastier. The temperature in the room was very, very cold. The lady did adjust the air conditioning when we asked her to change it. Years ago this was a classier restaurant with linen table cloths and linen napkins. We knew that it had changed hands so expected changes but nevertheless, hadn't anticipated such a drastic decline. We won't be returning.

We arrived on spec at 7pm on a Saturday. Evening and we were found a table even though the restaurant was busy. The restaurant may not be the best for creating ambience or an oriental experience but the food was really good.. You could order as little or much as you wanted off the menu , each delivered by friendly staff piping hot on small serving plates . The food quality and presentation made our evening enjoyable and can’t wait to visit again.

We are still fighting Our PCN vehicle reg was entered in the restaurant and even have proof of payment to the restaurant but appeals keep being rejected and fine keeps getting bigger , not interested in helping or listening instead have the headache of fighting the charges ,

We visited the restaurant for a family meal, we parked the 3 cars on the car park, even though we all entered our registrations into the kiosk inside we have all received a parking charge. Very expensive evening will not be returning ever again. Quite clearly a communication issue with ANPR camera and kiosk inside.

Food was nice but average, nothing particularly spectacular or special so to speak. The main issue was the waitresses (the older 2, not the young girls) were rude. They dropped food in front of you without care, then rushed off again, hovered our food in front of our faces when she busy speaking to another table! When collecting the plates, she leant across us without saying excuse me. The overall service was rude, hurried and rushed. They need a major revamp in customer service 👎

Unfortunately the experience last night was not great. The food was below par (we actually got served somebody else’s platter which in fairness the waitress couldn’t have been more apologetic but as it contained similar food we inadvertently started to eat it!) . Chicken squeeers so rubbery that I left left, generally the food was tasteless and with only one waitress delivery/ordering process was a lot slower than usual. It’s never been great food but a place to have a good feed with mates but paying £49 upfront ( you pay before you get served !) for 2 meals & 2 diet cokes , on reflection going to give it a miss now

Went 6pm on Saturday - early evening as we had a toddler with us - and we hoped it would be quiet - which it was. Waitress was miserable, no please or thank you at any time. No eye contact. Took ages for drinks to arrive and for her to take orders for starters. Well we thought it was ages - until we had to wait 20 mins for her to take order for mains. Kept asking if we wanted more drinks tho. The special curry was just sauce poured over the ingredients, not cooked in it. The chicken and cashew nuts stir fry contained 4 cashews, and was so salty it was inedible. When we were leaving I asked the girl behind the bar why food and service was so bad - she said they were very busy. When I pointed out they were only half full she said they were busy doing take away orders. If you’re paying £23.50 a head you expect better and faster service than someone ringing for a takeaway. No wonder they make you pay before you eat!! Other people were also complaining about slowness. We did wonder if it was because they were trying to get you to order less as you can only park for 2.5 hours. When I spoke to manager she just said sorry with a smile on her face - clearly not sorry or bothered - they’d got our money. Wont be going back.

This place had been recommended by some friends who live in the area and love it, we have just moved here so are trying a few local takeaways. Have to say we were disappointed with the quality of the food, it lacked flavour and the quality of the ribs wasn’t brilliant. We will be trying other Chinese’s in the area

We were taken here as a Christmas night out from our bosses so I cant comment on drinks prices, which a few people have commented on.£20 a head was good value ( except for our 2 vegetarians who didn't seem to have much to eat ), starters were great, I particularly enjoyed the duck and yuk sung. Mains average, service fine, will go again.

Visité el cumpleaños número 64 de mi madre y fue recibido por un personal amable que no pudo hacer lo suficiente por nosotros durante toda la noche. La comida llegó de manera oportuna, fresca y caliente. Las porciones son pequeñas, pero le recomendamos que ordene más veces como desee. No hay escasez y consciente de que hay un desperdicio mínimo. Encantador restaurante para una comida especial.

5 of us went , for the first time. After seeing some reviews we weren’t too sure. But don’t worry, it was amazing. The food was amazing. It was all cooked fresh and piping hot, definitely worth a try.

The Food is ok nothing outstanding portions are small so order 2 of everything, but the drinks are crazy prices !! A soda and line over £3 a soda £2.50 for a bottle that is 50p anyplace else lemonade is also stupid prices , it sad because this is sheer greed .

Our friends brought us here and it did not disappoint! The food was hot and tasted beautiful. The servers were very friendly and could not do enough for us. We had starters and mains at all different times and really enjoyed what we had. Cannot find a negative at all, we will be back!

do not touch with a bargepoll, 7 of us went for my birthday meal, 4 for the all you can eat and 3 a la carte, total £120 with drinks, but we didn't get to eat as they said there was a minimum spend of £10 on the a la carte. Caiden only wanted chips. They argued with us in an empty restaurant and would not back down. We walked out leaving them with no sales, absolute joke.

The food was incredible, we had all you can eat. The portions were smaller but the overall quality was amazing! We’ll be eating here again soon. Highly recommend :)

He sido un cliente habitual durante 16 años cachorro hasta hace un año y había escuchado algunas malas críticas del personal y los comensales. Sin embargo, mi jefe y yo pensamos que, como no habíamos estado durante un tiempo, daríamos otra oportunidad. El personal era agradable y los entrantes eran buenos, no todo lo que habíamos pedido y algunos artículos perdidos, pero lo dejamos ir. La comida de mis amigos estaba bien, pero mi primer plato principal sabía a detergente líquido, así que elegí un segundo plato principal que era pollo al ajo, que era asqueroso, el pollo estaba viscoso y no parecía pollo. Pedí hablar con el gerente y me quejé, ella dijo que lo siento, ¿quería algo más? Le dije que no, ya que me habían devuelto dos platos. Cuando llegó la factura, nos cobró el precio completo cuando le dije que no estaba feliz de pagar el precio total por el mío, ella se fue y regresó con una factura más alta por los precios del cartel, le dije que no estaba pagando a la carta ya que no había tenido a la carta. Luego dijo que cuando me negaba a pagar, llamaría a la policía, lo cual hizo. 20 minutos después, ella me dijo que les hablara por teléfono, donde les expliqué lo que había sucedido y lo que le ofrecí pagar, la policía habló con ella y luego regresó con una nueva factura con mi comida deducida y no contenta. Nunca volveré a ir a este lugar nunca más. Es una pena que los estándares de servicio y comida hayan estado muy por debajo del promedio.

chickenwent to celebrate 2 birthdays n it was ruined by the poor quality of food, specifically the chicken balls in sweet n sour, chicken n mushrooms n the chicken satay sticks. The chicken was slimy, tasted strange n when questioned was told they had changed supplier but they were going to change back. Would not move on the cost of £65 for 3 adults n 1 child aged 4 when we complained, just kept saying sorry for not meaning it. Will never eat there again even though we've been going there for 30 years. Absolutely disgusted by the food, the attitude of the staff but mostly with the quality of the food.....n the overly expensive cost when the quality of the food isn't there. Totally ruined the birthday treat

My wife and I have been here a few times and have always had a pleasurable dining experience. The food is fresh and of a high standard. It is an “All You Can Eat!” but you order and the food is brought to you. It’s a hidden gem and something you should try.

We visited mid-week and were really impressed with the choice of food, you can have as much as you want and it is served to you, rather than going up and down to a buffet. We had plenty to eat and the staff were lovely. The crispy shredded sweet and sour beef was particularly good. Prices were great. The decor is a little dated, if they can sort this I recon this could be a really cracking restaurant. Will definitely be back.

The LaiLing is an average buffet style Cantonese restaurant. The food and service is ok even if the location is not exactly inspiring.

Have used this restaurant a number of times over the years and have never been disappointed with the food.

Just had a takeaway delivered from Lailing never had a problem before but they are under new management the food is very below standard I had mushroom curry it was like mushrooms in water worse still my daughter who is 5 months pregnant pulled a large hair out of her food then opened her sweet and sour sauce to find bugs in that looked like ants.When we phoned to complain the woman got all aggressive and started shouting I asked for my money back she said no chance I am disgusted with the food but all the more disgusted with their attitude just shows what they actually think of there customers.

I love Lai Ling, always have and since the change in ownership have found the food to be even better ! Flavoursome, and better presentation.

We have only recently discovered this restaurant and this was our second visit. The first time we went was a quiet Wednesday evening and although the food was excellent the service was a bit hit & miss. This time we visited on a Saturday so were a bit worried what the service would be like with it being so much busier, however the staff were very attentive and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely again and all of our party really enjoyed everything that we tried. A good selection of dishes and you can reorder as many times as you like so great value. Also just to mention that they are now licensed so no option to take your own drinks in now, and prices are what you would expect. We will definitely be back for another visit.

Have recently (in last two months) changed hands, and has a new menu. Bit disappointed with food, not as good as it used to be. Also had to wait 25 mins in restaurant for our order. Will give it another go in few months time to see if it’s improved.

This is the only all you can eat restaurant in the area so it is good value for money and they do cook all the dishes to order, but the food is bland and they like a lot of garlic. All the dishes taste similar. The cantonese sweet & sour chicken is in a weak flavoured sauce.

Went a while ago prior new management. At that time, service was slow, portions small and not very warm. Thought we would give them another chance. Guess what.. service slow, portions small and not very warm. So i would argue that its new management ! Also on second visit ( not their fault) but very chavy atmosphere with the ‘f’ word bouncing around the tables !! Along with the boy racers outside when we left, banging out loud rap music and shouting over their own noise. Thanks, but no thanks !

Visited here Monday night with 6 friends, not impressed with the food or service. Staff were very casually dressed one in jeans and a tatty out of shape grey jumper. One guest didn’t want anymore food after her starter so asked if she could take her main home she was declined, this was strange because they offer a takeaway service ‘company policy’ we was told. We said but if she can’t eat it now we cdnt see the problem of it being taken home. The food was very sparse, 4 prawns in each dish. Overall very dissatisfied especially when you’ve paid £16.90 per person. You would expect higher standards and I’m sure it wouldn’t be this price in the city. Would not go again and advise people against wasting hard earned money on poor food and service.

Visited with family for a birthday meal. Didn’t realise it had changed management until we arrived and noticed that the menu was limited in comparison to the previous owners which was a shame - not as much choice for vegetarians. They no longer have a licence to serve alcohol ( which they told us about when we called to book but failed to say they had changed ownership) and on arrival we were told that if we opened the wine we had taken with us that we would be charged £3 per glass for corkage. We decided not to bother and asked for water. We were given glasses for free to go with our water and thought nothing of it when 4 of our party used the glasses for beer but a member of staff came over to tell us abruptly that we wound now be charged £3 per person for the use of the glass - so £12 for the privilege of bringing our own alcohol! Thought is was very cheeky. The food was ok but small main portions and staff not very friendly or polite. How do they expect to encourage customers to return! Won’t be going back.

Table of eight well looked after. Food superb and catered for vegan and vegetarian in our party. Busy Saturday night so book early but it’s worth it. *****

Went last night and must say worst meal we have ever eaten.firstly you have to take your own alcohol but they charge you £3 per person for a glass, all the food comes on one plate...so if you order 6 starters they will all come on one plate regardless of dry or wet food resulting in dry food becoming soggy such as crispy seaweed, sesame toast etc. Chicken satay that should be peanut butter were covered in curry sauce same as some of the ribs, we had varies starts and as we were funinidhing them but still eating the food on plate it was taken without anyone asking if we had finished! When the food was brought it was just shoved on table without a word. We didn't get as far as main course as we had had enough, they wanted to charge us half price but we said no so they gave it to us without charge, the lady manager we spoke to was very helpful but said she had a few complaints about staff n customer communication. Talk about saving I washing up

A good place to eat Chinese/ Cantonese food, all you can eat so good value , just keep ordering ,,no buffet style slop ,,freshly made ,at a reasonable price only critisisum is it lacks a bit of atmosphere and can be cold in there but still quite good

This really depends on why you are going out so let's get the first point clear; the food is very good. The service is hit and miss verging on chaotic and even though they are not licensed so cannot provide alcoholic drinks they charge £3 each for a glass if you take your own. They even charged twice for one of our party who had taken both wine and beer so needed two glasses!

First time here today and it will certainly be the last. Phoned order and they said 30 mins. Looks goodish from the outside but my god the inside was awful. Cheap old worn out sticky carpets. Waiter came through with smoky food and set alarm off. I ended up waiting nearly 1 hr. I thought it had better be worth it after this. It was buffet night so staff were running backwards and forwards for them but I think they forgot about my order. Got home tried the prawn toast, extremely oily I mean really swimming. Egg fried rice was just plain rice with a bit of scrambled egg slung in, bland and bloody tasteless. Ribs in cantonese sauce where fat and grizzle. To top it all it was just warm, probably because it had been sitting on the side in the kitchen for 20 mins. Overall extremely disappointed and would advise everyone to steer clear.

Donkey poo, tried to charge us £3 for to hire a glass. Bad service. Think a good vet could of got the food going again! Won’t be returning

Decided to try here again after a long break and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was a vast improvement over the last time I had the misfortune to eat here. The food was served promptly and was superb. The restaurant is not licensed anymore so remember to take your own beer. I will certainly be back for more.

After reading some of the reviews regarding the Lai Ling restaurant in Rednal, I was a bit concerned on going back for a meal after reading the comments on trip adviser. Yes there are new owners and staff but the quality of the food is still as good as it as always been probably even better than before. Yes they do not sell alcoholic drinks as they don't have a drinks licence yet, but you can take your own. My wife and I use the Lai Ling once a month and admit when reading some comments we did not go for 2 months but I can assure you we will still be eating there. OUR MEAL WAS GREAT!.

Used to be one of the best Chinese around for many many years but now unfortunately under new management.

Yes this has recently been taken over by new management & we were slightly apprehensive about dining here due to some bad reviews (many of which were prior to the new manager). I have to say that we were greeted by very friendly professional staff who could not do enough for us (eight of us plus 2 toddlers). All the food served was hot and tasty - yes the portions are small but its eat as much as you want so it's a good way to try a selection of Cantonese dishes without wasting lots of food. We were very impressed and we will definitely be returning

Family new year get together at the Lai Ling ....excellent service....lovely food ...great choice . We were a family of 10 adults with 2 children in pushchairs...seating was good ..food was lovely and piping hot . ....a very busy evening for the staff ..who coped very well ...great atmosphere ..a very enjoyable event .There was a hire charge of £4 for a wine glass...which we thought was acceptable ....bearing in mind that brining your own drinks in most cases works out much cheaper than restaurant prices .... ..however you were welcome to drink out of your can or beer bottle free of charge ....very enjoyable..... evening

We have been having takeaway from here for the best part of a year, and its always been fantastic. Food Hot, tasty, generous portions and quality always second to none.

New management now in place, so must be a bit difficult for the. However the food arrived in good time and as hot and tasty as it should be.
