My friend and I visited this restaurant and were disappointed. We ordered a starter which, when it arrived, was not what was advertised on the menu. We ate it but mentioned to the waiter that it was not what we had expected. He walked away as my friend was saying this to him but did begrudgingly apologise before disappearing. However, although he reappeared, he did not come back to the table to ask us if we wished to have anything else and we waited for at least 30 minutes before we decided we would just go. There was nobody else in the restaurant so it certainly wasnt because it was busy. Wouldnt go back.

Used a gifted Itison voucher for the "sharing board for 2 with bottle of wine". Warm cheery welcome. Mixed board came with slices of 2 different hams, 3 cheeses (Applewood Smoked, Highland Murder Blue & Brie), olives, sun-dried tomatoes, gherkin, coleslaw & chutney with oatcakes. A venerable wee lunchtime feast! A very nice bottle of red just finished it off nicely! Would recommend.

I bought an ItIsOn voucher for 10 small plates for 4 people with a glass of wine. See photo attached. Tried nearly every single small plate available apart from the soup and the inly one we didnt like was the houmous (a bit chalky tasting/dry). Everything else was tip top and the house white wine was decent too. Definitely had a good experience and would go back again in future. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Restaurant was clean and service was prompt. Keep up the good work!

A group of friends lunched here before heading to the King's.The female who served us (didn't get her name unfortunately) was really efficient, there was 12 of us and we were all served at the same time with drinks, starters and mains. She asked how the food was and if we needed more drinks etc.Everybody's food looked delicious and fresh, my starter was haggis which was delicious, the spicy sauce defo was spicy. My main was the flat iron steak which again was delicious, the only people who didn't clear their plates were the ones who had the chicken burger, they didn't eat all the bun but ate everything else. Our group does the Panto at the King's every year and we have all agreed next year we will be back at Tables for lunch.

I've been lunching at (Insert Name of the Day) for maybe 5 years twice a year. So this will be brief run through of my experience over the years. In the beginning I was astounded by the quality of the cooking for the price. And then the wine list got better. And then the format changed late last/early this year. So for the first visit under the new name, we constructed a meal that looked pretty similar to the old, and the wine list was at its best. And now to the latest visit - I'm not a big fan of the new format, but we gave it one last hurrah. The new wine list is simplified to the near minimum, and cheaper than it was. There was nothing wrong with the wine, it was just standard quaffing with no great aspiration, and a price to match. The flat iron steak was well executed, and somebody in the kitchen still knows what they're doing. If they've gone from building an interesting menu (to me at any rate) you wonder if it's still the same person, and what keeps them there now?So the 3 stars is a reflection of what was, to what is, and who knows what the future holds.I just know sadly I won't be part of it, and like all flesh, it's time is done, and we move on.

When we arrived there was no one in the restaurant. We were aware it may have just opened, however, after waiting 5-10 minutes started to get confused. Attempted to call for service and when someone finally appeared- they asked, “can I help?” rather than an apology for the wait/lack of front of house staff. Service is rather patchy. Friendly, but definitely needs refining. We were then surprised to get half way through our food to discover there is three members of staff, so this initial wait was even more confusing. The £5 lunch is good and you get what you pay for. Haggis is lovely and nice fresh fish. Should consider revising lunch menu to offer “upgrades” and try up-sell extra sides/small plates/course sizes as I would consider this. I’m sure this would be possible but would nice to see it on paper.Nice decor and good style overall. I would visit again.

Tucked behind the very busy Bennets Bar on Home Street sets the incredibly friendly Tables. The limited menu offers great local fare and we enjoyed two dinners here. We had, the mac n' cheese with Haggis, the fish n' chips, a hamburger and lots of beers. over the two nights. Also, since it is attached to bennets the selection of whisky was outstanding Callum and co. manning the bar were excellent and could not have been friendlier

There are a lot of options in Edinburgh- not sure I would go back here for food. The portions were not good value for money. The service didn't pay attention to details and if an honest review on the food (when asked how it was) is provided- in the future it would be good if staff could avoid getting defensive. Halloumi Fries are wannabe mozzarella sticks- taking away the joy of eating them in the first place. I think if they are going to want to be a burger/pub joint they will need to work a bit harder to stick around beyond the fringe. Drinks are good and fairly priced.

Locale ben arredato, servizio veloce, camerieri gentili, ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo..promossi.

Nice little restaurant, perhaps a little tired, but within walking distance of the theatre, so pretty ideal if youre looking for something to eat before the theatre as we did. The pre theatre menu is the cheapest around and for three courses too..! The food is good and is well presented and speedy out of the kitchen, the restaurant has an element of class to it, not the place to go if you want to enjoy a leisurely evening, more of a restaurant and in and out but if you are looking for a quick meal for low budget this place will provide.

Visited here on the Sunday of the late May bank holiday weekend. We’d been looking for something different and original recognising that there are lots of standard places to eat or chains, as there is in every city. We came across La Petit Mort and managed to get an early evening table. What a delight. The menu wasn’t the most expansive but still had a great range of interesting dishes. Two couples and my five year old daughter chose a good selection and the feedback was unanimous - amazing! The food was outrageously good, and the young fella who doubled as barman/waiter also had an incredible knowledge of the wine cellar. Desert was similarly impressive and thoughtfully creative. Then the whisky. The restaurant happens to adjoin a bar and they shared a huge whisky cellar of over 350 bottles. And our friend the barman/waiter tested us on our favourites and delivered a sample of bottles to the table to help us select a dram. All in all, dinner was an experience to remember. From our welcome, the service, to the starter, wines, main course, desert and then whisky - we could not fault any aspect of our time there. Please visit this place!

I have eaten in this restaurant three times in the past five months. Its proximity to The King's Theatre makes this a very convenient place to meet friends for a pre-theatre meal and this seems to be their forte with the kitchen geared up to an early wave of diners and there is limited choice on the menu. Having eaten there later in the evening also it tends to lack a little atmosphere. The food is well cooked and served but the menu is not always as enticing for my tastes as it could be, however the drink selection is excellent since its is also the restaurant which leads through to Bennet's Bar, a veritable Edinburgh institution and a night-cap can always be had there instead if a more convivial atmosphere is sought. The staff on each occasion were very attentive despite, on two visits, being very busy. There is now a great deal of competition from other restaurants in this area but La Petite Mort should survive if it can maintain its current standards.

Discovered this restaurant after leaving a matinee at the King’s Theatre just around the corner. What a pleasant surprise. We went for the 3 course menu after recommendations from the person in charge ( sorry didn’t get his name ) The salmon tian was very tasty and presented really well that was followed by the crispy belly of pork which was one of the best we’ve had in a long while with a black pudding and potato mash, we ended sharing a cheese selection which was all about local cheeses rather than the usual 3. Malbec was our wine of choice and this didn’t disappoint. Great service, friendly and professional staff would definitely return here if we are in this area again.

Be clear this is a restaurant in a side bar of a pub which creates a curious atmosphere. Seating is rather compact with chairs that are not so comfortable. Staff are casually dressed, the bar area is strewn with debris of the session and it does not feel like a restaurant. The food was good, modest to small portion size. The wine choice was restricted at lower price end (under £26) as 5 were out of stock! Service was on the slow side and came with frequent “sorry about the delay” comments. Toilets are shared with the pub, need I say more.

I think the dishes are over complicated and would be better if the chef resisted the urge to batter and deep fry the sides.

On the Saturday, as we were sprucing ourselves up to go to the restaurant, I rang to confirm the time. I was told that my reservation no longer existed + they could not accommodate me. I explained we were tourists for the weekend, + had booked in advance, + as there was an international match in Murrayfield, would be worried about getting into any restaurant at this short notice. The man on the phone just said our reservation had been lost + that he could do nothing. He did not offer to help us find somewhere to eat, try to squeeze us in, or even suggest names of a few other places. We had nowhere to go for dinner + had to walk around looking for food when we wanted to be enjoying ourselves in a nice restaurant on our last night in the city.

Visited with my daughter who I met after she finished work as I am visiting my home town for a few days, G&T; while I studied the menu and once agreed I ordered a Cauliflower soup with two blue cheese won ton type things in it thick and tasty if not very hot while she opted for Cullen Skink spring rolls which she enjoyed. She does claim to be a Vegetarian as well as a Pescatarian. Mains we both opted for the seabass fillet with tempura butternut squash and spring onion on celeriac and apple puree. Very nice if a little light side for me left feeling hungry. She then had the Strawberry bavarois with scorched meringues, fresh strawberries and mint. This was the pre-theatre menu at an agreed price one three course and one two course and while the bottle of wine was 31/32 quid the bill of £72 odd in total I thought a bit over the top for what I eat. On the down side the place we sat against the wall and wood panelling had a dado rail that was covered in dust and not just from a couple of days and the wall had cobwebs and dust on the stonework – Not impressed

We have been to petit morts on a number of occasions during our visits to Edinburgh and we really like it, and always recommend it to friends, family and our Airbnb guests. It has a limited menu but the food is very well presented and is of a very good standard for the price.

Went as a couple recently and found the menu to be lacking in substantial choice. The staff were under pressure as there was only one on duty and the restaurant was full. The food was tasty but uninspiring.

Visited today for a late lunch. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and professional and excellent value for money-3 courses for £13.95. Would highly recommend and we will back soon. I particularly loved the Cullen skink spring rolls with crispy leeks.

Located next to the Kjngs Theatre, this popular restaurant is an excellent choice for a pre-show dinner. Swift service, excellent food - we had the fishcakes followed by pork loin - both very tasty - and an unusual coconut panna cotta which was very moreish! Portions were slightly on the small side, but certainly sufficient for an early evening dinner. Great value for money. Highly recommended.

Great music, great cider, the food is as good as vegan food gets if you are into it and still very good if you're not. Nice people

Pretty good. Very friendly staff and a nice shop connected to it where you can get fresh fruit and veg. Plenty of options including vegan. Nice options for small children too.

A traditional friendly bar. Good choice of beers, spirits and wine. The bar staff are lovely people and make you feel welcome, the locals are friendly too. Enjoyed spending time in there.
