Fantastic food and great service. We had tapas and everything was delicious.

What an absolute gem of a place! We booked for a small birthday celebration and were blown away from start to finish. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the team simply cannot do enough for you! We asked for drinks that weren’t on the menu and they immediately set about finding the recipe and running out for ingredients to make it. They are knowledgeable, friendly and clearly have a passion for what they do, we haven’t stopped talking about the service we received whilst there. The food is UNREAL, we ordered different starters and mains and everything they brought us was a taste explosion, we kept eating well past being stuffed because it tasted absolutely delicious and the portions are generous. The mussels were lovely and the bass was absolutely divine, we cannot rate this place highly enough. A seasoned Karen would find it impossible to have anything to complain about. We will absolutely be back as soon as possible. Thank you so much, what a way to celebrate a birthday ❤️❤️❤️

Great evening at La Mer Rouge. The sea bass was exceptional. The service was lovely, so welcoming and down to earth. I have avoided taking my kids there, (as I thought it was too posh) but after my first visit tonight I am looking forward to returning with the kids for afternoon tapas. X

A quirky, interesting and vibrant environment with friendly service, lots of great fish and seafood (with options for just meat eaters or vegetarians) and such tasty food. My wife and I dined with a friend on a ln early Sunday evening. Service was unhurried, owner was present and very sociable. Well opted for the chowder and were presented with a wide selection of fish and seafood cooked to absolute perfection and a soup base with such an amazing rich, creamy, savoury flavour with everything well seasoned.

Didn’t get them name of the young man working on Monday 17th March, but he was so helpful and friendly. Provided an excellent service and very informative, a perfect example of what great customer service is. The food was immaculate, fresh and flavourful. For 2 courses & 2 glasses of wine, it came to £80, which is very reasonably priced for the quantity and the quality of this type of food. Menu is very diverse, lots of choice. Lovely and unique atmosphere and decor. Absolutely amazing, will be visiting again. Thank you!

The French name of this restaurant would suggest to me a high level of sea food standard. When I visited for lunch I was sadly disappointed. At mid day, service was stretched even though there were only a half dozen customers taking coffee. The overwhelming smell of fish in the venue was off-putting. Lobster tail was replaced with a half lobster. This did not seem fresh, which was confirmed when I discovered green flesh (and I don't mean tomalley). I don't know if this explains the heavy overuse of seasoning. The atmosphere felt to me more like a Brixton market cafe, with lower quality and higher prices. Shrewsbury offers far better in abundance.

A hidden gem in plain sight. 💎 My wife and I booked this wonderful seafood restaurant. I'd eaten there before with friends and wanted to show the experience, which did not disappoint. 🍤🦐🦞 Sam was a great host, kept us smiling, and was very welcoming. The mixologist did, too, and she was incredible (photos below) with her mixers. Chef made an appearance and is always a delight to speak to. 🍹🍸 The table was decorated beautifully, with flowers, as I mentioned when booking how little we get to go out together. (Without the kids) 💐 The starters were stunning, the mains to die for, and I couldn't even manage a dessert (and I'm a big lad, but the wine helped). Overall rating of 5 stars as it never disappoints, and if you've never been here before, you are missing out. ⭐ Personally, I would suggest booking before the first Michelin star arrives (no joke) Thanks to all at La Mer Rouge for making a rare intimate night out one of the very best it could be (and yes, we are coming back 😁)

Booked just for the 2 of us on a Friday night but need not have booked as there was only one other table of 5 there (possibly because 3 weeks after Christmas and no one paid yet) We were greeted warmly, shown to our table and the menus explained, drinks order taken. The chap was very friendly and chatty. Having given us just enough time to decide on our choices from the yummy sounding dishes he popped back with our drinks and took our order. The starters arrived timely, well presented and steaming hot which pleased me as I hate lukewarm food. After not being rushed, the main courses arrived, again hot and presented well. All food was flavoursome and very tasty. A nice little message on the tray the bill came on and a cheery farewell from the waiter completed a very pleasant evening. We have been before and had a similarly pleasant evening and food is consistently good. The only criticisms I would have: 1. would be to heat the restaurant (especially in January) as I am always cold in there, I could hear an electric fan heater somewhere but again the temperature was still on the chilly side. 2. waiter - ditch the baseball cap Other than that well done and thank you.

First of all, the welcome was very bad. We were greeted harshly and sullenly. It was the first time I came across such a place in Shrewsbury. Also, the food was incredibly bad. It does not even deserve half of the price paid. There was a bad smell inside, there was no air. I definitely do not recommend it. A complete disappointment.

We had the most delicious seafood chowder today, not cheap but worth every penny. It's possibly the nicest I've had in a long time.

Really disappointed. Thought we'd give this independent restaurant a try. The service was good and staff very friendly but the food so disappointing. We won't return, sorry .

The Worst Breakfast Experience – Avoid at All Costs! I regretfully decided to try the "Big Breakfast" advertised at this establishment, and it was an experience I won’t forget—for all the wrong reasons. From the moment I entered the cold and unwelcoming restaurant, I had a sinking feeling, and unfortunately, my instincts were spot on. When the breakfast arrived, I genuinely thought it was a prank. For £10, I was served the smallest portion imaginable—cold, flavorless, and made with the cheapest ingredients you could find. It was clear no thought or care had gone into the preparation. The toast? A disaster on its own. Only one side was toasted, and when we pointed this out to the server, her solution was to ask the kitchen to "toast it more." No, we didn’t want it cremated; we wanted it toasted properly the first time. The kitchen staff clearly had no idea what they were doing, and calling them “chefs” feels like a stretch. This place should be ashamed of what they serve. It’s not just bad—it’s disrespectful to customers who pay hard-earned money expecting a decent meal. Save yourself the disappointment and avoid this joke of a restaurant. Total waste of time and money. Having just seen the owners response, I have no idea what they are talking about , totally irrelevant to the comments I made, must have it mixed with another negative review. What a fool.

Food was fantastic but overpriced for quality of the fish. The waiting staff were more concerned over the makeup they had bought and dying her hair tomorrow. Bit of professionalism needs injected into the place. Customer complained about the lobster and the chit chat between them was don’t tell chef!

What a great find! Visiting Shrewsbury for the day with a friend, we spotted the restaurant and walked in for lunch. Fantastic atmosphere, decor and service with beautiful food. Can't recommend highly enough. We will definitely visit again if we're in the area.

Have walked past a few times but today fancied ending my shopping trip with a treat. I wasn't disappointed. Even though it was late afternoon, the welcome was very warm and friendly and the waitress was very helpful with my enquiry about items on the menu. The Cairo beef shwarma was delicious and fresh and a very generous portion. The atmosphere was so relaxed I felt at home and would happily have spent the evening there with a good book. Thank you all. Will definitely come again.

Something strange going on here. The 'La Mer Rouge' sign from the front header board above the restaurant has been removed, but the credit card receipt still shows that name on it, plus they have no cash in the till. The food was awful and the place looked really shabby. The only good point was the waitress, who was lovely. Best avoided until they sort themselves out. Footnote to the owner's response below. Slander is spoken, libel is written. This is indeed a genuine review from a couple (one of whom has a legal background) that had a meal in your restaurant this month. I have no idea who the lady you mention is and I have no desire to know, or to visit your restaurant again.

Our firm favourite. The staff are lovely and the food is freshly cooked and original. It is probably the only place I actually bother to eat out in in Shrewsbury now.

The food was absolutely superb and the customer service fantastic. It wasn’t busy when we were there so people are missing out on a treat !!!

We were told the portions are large by the waitress so we didn’t order any extras, I don’t know who they normally feed maybe families of ewoks and hobbits but the portions were ridiculous, no word of a lie the 3 portions of chips that came with the meal there were no more then 8-9 fries in each bowl, and the so called flat bread was a piece of dry French toast. Shocking for the cost of the food.

Lovely experience here, We didn’t book as we were walking around looking for somewhere nice to eat, menu was on the window so we had a nose and thought we’d give it a try. It didn’t disappoint. Me and my husband both throughly enjoyed our food and can’t wait to return.

Terrible experience. I ordered the lobster and it was grey/green in colour. We made a complaint and he said that’s how it’s meant to look because they leave all the organs inside for some reason!! It tasted old and re heated. Told them we wasn’t happy and my response was by the waited “The chef says he can’t be bothered to come and argue with you so we’ve taken it off the bill”. Bad attitude from the waiter and the chef. Edit: Chef is saying I didn’t appreciate it. I would like to see him eat a grey/green lobster and live to tell the tale!!

I cannot comprehend the 5 star reviews this restaurant has received and I’m convinced we’ve either eaten at different restaurants or had different staff serving us. This was a birthday meal for my best friend who loves lobster. As the rest of us don’t eat fish, we sucked it up coming here for her to enjoy lobster. It was terrible and hence we complained. Now this is where the 1 star review comes in and this is still being generous. Instead of them saying we’re so sorry you didn’t enjoy it can we get you something else? We got ‘the chef cannot be bothered to come down and argue so just don’t pay for it’. NEVER had staff talk to us like this ever. Ok ok so I thought about posting a poor review but thought no they’re having an off day. My friend however posted a review and instead of them saying we’re sorry you didn’t enjoy, she got accused of ordering the lobster to be pretentious and a real seafood lover would have appreciated it!! I mean gold star for your customer service guys seriously take a bow 👌🏻 Steer well clear unless you want to pay top dollar for insults

Conerning issues with some of the seafood. I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt and put it down to a bad night as the majority of food was fine. I'd hate for someone else to get the same experience and fall into the same trap. The majority of the menu's unavailable, resulting in a lack of choice. No mention of this when making the booking. One couple walked out before being seated over the reduced menus. Customers on other tables having issues with their order, missing bits, this did get resolved. Speaking to disappointed customers like dirt and insulting them for posting a review is apparently accepable. Its clear your staff are nervous about speaking to you about the issues. Speak to your customers in the restaurant when the opportunity presents itself it. Our biggest regret is not taking a photo of the food and taking all the high reviews at face value.

Customer service was so poor, I get better service at my local pub! I ordered battered prawns and the shells were still on!!! UNDER THE BATTER!!! I nearly choked!!! 😵 Very sad meal, would NOT recommend and would not order the prawns… UNLESS YOU WANT TO CHOKE!!!!!!!

I can explain how disappointed after I tried this restaurant, because all the beautiful dishes from social media were taken away from the menu. I was headache to see a few plates use the same thing,Monkfish. It should be alright with Monkfish, but not all. I was recommended by the waitress to add sirloin to our order to make it enough because we share dishes for family lunch. But we don’t feel full as those sirloin becomes leftover on the plate! I myself recommended this restaurant to my family. I should believe my eyes because I hardly see full house this time when we passed by at busy hours. I am afraid there is something changed as compared with a few months ago.

Two visits with children were delightful. And a third trip with adults only capped it off. The chef's use of spices was perfectly balanced without overwhelming the dish. My only quibble was that bread is not automatically served to sop up all of the wonderful sauases.

The world needs more seafood restaurants. Everything was perfectly cooked. My partners monkfish was better than my sea bass, which is my only complaint. We live not too far away and will definitely be returning. Wine selection was a bit poor, but it's not fine dining. Prices were fair for the quality of the food, which again, was outstanding. Scallops, prawns and fish were all perfect.

We will be going back..again and again!! Cannot fault anything, food fabulous, menu eclectic, staff wonderful and prices are within every budget.

In town for a day just to mooch around, we wanted somewhere a bit different. Shrewsbury seems to have loads of Italian food eateries, but we wanted local and not pizza, so tried here. The restaurant has a nice, slightly hippie ambience, is sited right in town and has an interesting menu. We did the a-la-carte two courses for £30, which was super value (though roasts are offered on a Sunday too). The fish selections are imaginative and high quality. The wines they have are a perfect accompaniment. We loved the Monkfish and Sea bass, and the scallops were delicious. The veggies are nicely prepared and thoughtfully selected to go with the appropriate mains. Recommended.

A delicious, well cooked meal followed by baclawa made in-house. Excellent service.

My wife and I ate here on a Wednesday evening and had been really looking forward to it for months. Our starters (scallops and garlic mushrooms) were fantastic, but the mains let it down. The fish was good but accompaniments came with it. The prawn salad was poor, the prawns were dry and non really edible.

All tough the moules were fine, the tagine was so overcooked. Before ordering I checked the pricelist and nowhere was mentioned there was a 12,5% service charge, welk, there is… unpleasant surprise, once, never again…

Scallop and black pudding starter exquisite, then monkfish with prawns equally mouthwatering. Loved the side dish of fried rice with nuts. Young staff friendly and chatty, a very enjoyable evening.

We booked a table and paid a £40 deposit (£10 each) I didn't mind paying it however I don't feel it necessary for a small table. When we arrived we were seated and it was very dark, I asked if the lights could be switched on to be told the chef doesn't like the lights on as they flicker and its distracting. We asked for zinfandel wine and was told that they didn't have any in stock only dry rose and they could add blackcurrant to make it sweeter I personally would have offered lemonade. When ordering food I wanted lobster I was told they only had lobster tail, I did order that and it was lovely but disappointed they didn't have what they offered on the menu. We asked some questions about the menu and a few things were not available. We also ordered the kofta and when it arrived they had no flat breads. So we were offered more bread. I asked for no tomato in my salad and tomato was actually in my salad when it arrived! Whilst we were mid meal the owner or manger was having a heated discussion with the waitress. It wasn't appropriate in front of house and that poor girl must have been embarrassed. I will say that we had no complaints with the food that was ordered and served it was very good. However I would not return due to the problems listed above. If I hadn't of payed the deposit after so many items not on the menu we would have left I'm afraid.

Lunch today for birthday celebration and items of food and drink requested were not available, which was very disappointing. The young waitress had to make many apologies and I did feel sorry for her as it was not her fault. We could of left but didn’t want to spoil the Birthday girl's lunchtime celebration and risk losing our £40 deposit paid 24 hours in advance in case of no show even though they clearly only had a couple of tables occupied. Food was tasty enough although the bread was rather stale/dry. Don’t think I would go again in case of repeat performance the explanation given to food and drink not available was that the menu was being changed… sorry just not good enough !!

Starter(moules), was delicious. A l9vely take on a classic. Main (lamb shank) was very good, but dry. Saved by the immaculate service. Food overall good, service exceptional. Happy customer.

This is a very good place to eat

All round poor. Dirty tablecloths, no lights on. Smelled of joss sticks. Starters were poor, mains were horrendous. I would have said no on sight but they had taken a deposit from my mother…. (who takes a deposit in a wholly empty restaurant???). Lamb shank was reheated and just disastrous. Sent back. Comped. Also what kind of restaurant displays ex-vat prices and displays them at 12.5%? Restaurant vat went back to 20% in 2022 so def something very dodgy happening that HMRC would be interested in? Anyway it’s definitely unusual and unethical to not include vat. Don’t bother. Edit: Owner’s response says it all. The reheated lamb shank was donkey it seems. Ripping off old ladies and being rude to honest reviewers. Good luck with that!

Arrived in Shrewsbury and not booked anywhere for food so decided to try here. So glad we did, the welcome and service was perfect and the food was amazing. We will be coming back next time we are here . Just perfect

Expensive but the food was very good. The food is very spicy, so you may need to ask that they chill it down, if spice is not your thing. They'll do this happily 😊. Great fish selection 👌

Absolutely exceptional. We came for an early doors meal whilst staying in the area. Cannot fault the food and Samuel at front of house was charming, friendly and informative. Our dog was allowed too and happily curled up under the table having been offered a treat and a bowl of water. Would definitely recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I could give less than one star I would . Food was not cooked properly , service slow, did not bring what we expected or think we oder, salad and rice there old you could see it didn’t even had to try it. Is not worth the travel to go back , I was expecting something much more quality specially sea food need to know how to cook and manage . I wouldn’t advise you is not worth it specially if you compare to the price you pay at the end .

Absoluty disappointed . Travel 1 h to get there hopping for a nice dinner , the menu was complicated as we had no idea what we were ordering, food come half cooked, we been told fish won’t have bone and it won’t be spicy come exactly opposite, the ostrich were not fresh at all you could feel the taste funny , and the rice looked old and seam like the just worm it in the microwave. Never ever again , let not talk about the bad indigestion we had the same night and day after. Be careful what you order if you ever go there and get ready to be disappointment.

Came here for a meal on new years eve having been recommended by friends. Lovely restaurant, great friendly service from the moment we arrived Food service was quick, and the food was every bit as tasty as it looked. All meals were very fresh and great value for the quality of the food Highly recommend and will definitely be returning

Great food and lovely customer service

Can I begin by saying it is very very rare I write such a negative review but I really do find very little to be positive about. I reserved a table for four and paid the deposit because the xmas menu looked very nice. When we were seated and were given the menu I asked for xmas menu to be informed it was only for parties over 6 and the menu had to be chosen prior to the date of eating. I was informed this was on their website which I have since checked and cannot find evidence of this. We ordered and while waiting for our meal 2 complimentary small dips with some bread and a salad was brought . The salad was lovely and fresh, bread warm and fresh. The small dips were tasteless. Our main course was pleasant but not worth the cost. i had bass with scallops and prawns which consisted of two average size pieces of bass four medium sized prawns and 2 scallops. Cost £25 minus vat which unusually is not included on the menu but added onto the bill which if you have not noticed is a bit of a surprise. The restaurant itself has nice decor but was cold . Staff were pleasant and service ok. I found the whole experience disappointing especially after reading such positive reviews. I can only be honest and will be writing an excellent review of another restaurant we dined the night before so I am not someone who complains for the sake of it. Sorry but I would definitely not recommend this restaurant.

Finally!!! We found a place that serves lobster and oysters. Love this place. The Lebanese style chicken kebabs, beef kebabs, steak and lobster, and oysters were all amazing! So delicious, definitely recommend try these. Well priced too. Definitely coming back here!!!

The best food ever and such lovely staff!!

We arrived in Shrewsbury on a bank holiday and wondered around looking for an open restaurant. We found a gem! We loved the scallops on black pudding with pea purée and bacon crumbles starter. The Monk fish tagine and monk fish and seafood with creamy pesto were fabulous!

What a superb place for a special lunch! It was recommended to us. From the starting Amuse bouche to the main course, the food was cooked to a high standard. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the wine complemented our meals perfectly. The best bit though, was the cararamalised figs and marscapone. This was to die for. We've told all our friends about it, and will be back soon

This restaurant was recommended by couple of my friends which serves Mediterranean cuisine. They have lot of choices of sea food. We tried prawns and monk fish curry with rice, prawns chorizo peppers starters, long Island ice tea and baklava with ice cream for dessert. We shared among two of us and was more than enough. My personal favourite was prawns curry which reminded me of fish curry from India. Would come again to try other dishes 👍

We stumbled upon this restaurant on a night out in Shrewsbury. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff are very friendly and helpful (It was a Friday night, we had no reservation, the restaurant was buzzing and yet they still managed to find us a table). Then the food came....seriously good French and Egyptian cuisine. We are going to visit Shrewsbury again just so that we can come back here and eat.

Amazing food & service!! We went on a Sunday afternoon. We were sceptical on the beggining as there was only 1 more table in the restaurant. However, the waiters were so kind, the service was great, and the food DELICIOUS! We had the oysters, the scallops, the fried calamari, a side salad and rice and they also offered us a beetroot salad with flatbread as a welcome dish. Coming from a Mediterranean country, I can say that I haven't tried such a delicious seafood in the UK before. Well done guys! I definitely recommend it. I'm addition to the excellent service and food, the toillets were clean and the restaurant decoration/atmosphere was great as well.

Stopped here for a lunch on my way home. Not really a fan of salad but the beetroot salad they do for starters on the set menu is actually quite good. They even serve gluten free bread for starters with dips and did a tasty chicken Shish for mains. Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes a good Mediterranean cuisine. Big shoutout to the friendly staff who work here too!

A fish lovers delight, just fantastic, hadn’t been back since the restaurant had moved from Frankwell. Still amazing food and service possibly even better than I remember. I had the whole bream for main which was just excellent. One of Shrewsbury best kept secret thank you.

The best restaurant/food in Shrewsbury, infact the best I've ever been to. Staff were all so lovely and attentive. Atmosphere 10/10. Food 10/10 absolutely stunning, large portion sizes and really delicious!!! I'm a massive fish lover and I wasn't disappointed at all. Plus free tasty beetroot salad + hummus with flatbread while you wait. Definitely will be returning to work our way through the menu.
