La Luna in Calderdale

Random find on a visit to Piece Hall with a friend. Food was excellent - good portions and good quality. Let down by the service.... Service was quick but the staff lacking. The two staff we dealt with - one was barely monosyllabic and other did not utter a word. The bill included 'optional' service charge, but the cc payment was taken so quickly we had no option to take it off and reflect the quality of service. So, food great, staff not so much.

Great service, excellent food … both mains and deserts; we had fajitas, kebab, burger; cheesecake and lemon meringue. Attentive waiter. Very reasonably priced.

Were shown to a table, drinks order taken, then 10 mins later food order taken. I ordered "the best" meatballs in town with linguine with a garlic pizza bread. The sauce on the pasta was the best thing about this dish - it was nice and tasty, but the linguine was just that, and the 3 meatballs tasted processed - on looking at them they looked like they were just mushed together and defiantly not homemade. For what they charge, and then the service charge on top (which we didn't pay) it's expensive, and the staff stare at you like you are not worthy of being there.

La Luna is not to be missed. The waiting staff were very friendly and professional and the food was superb - best I've had for a long time. As you might expect, you don't see any of the chefs but the kitchen team are clearly at the top of their game. You won't be disappointed.

Just tried to go for brunch/coffee with my granddaughter and was refused entry with a pram. Ridiculous and discriminating against babies/children. Was asked to leave it outside on the decking. What a stupid request when she’s asleep in there. Hope no one ever goes in a wheelchair! You’ll be asked to walk in and leave that on decking too?

Excellent meal at la Luna. In one of the nicer parts of Halifax town Center. Whoever created that arcade has done a really good job. Good was very good. Although expensive it was worth every penny. Great service. Lovely atmosphere. Will not disappoint

We booked here last minute to eat as a party of 3. The restaurant has a very nice vibe and the staff are very attentive. The food was honestly the best food I have had in ages! Lots of choices on the menu as well. I would definitely recommend this place if you are going to Halifax. I wish this was near where I live!

Fabulous food, atmosphere and service! We called in mid week without a reservation but we’re fortunate to be seated at an upstairs table. There was a real buzz to the lunchtime service. We ordered a lovely Sancerre bottle of white to accompany our lasagne and chicken kebab. Both meals are delicious. Highly recommend La Luna and we will definitely be back when we next visit Halifax.

We booked for 7 pm on a Saturday & the place was packed; despite this we were immediately shown to a table, no waiting involved. The service was prompt & the food delicious. The price reflected the experience, not cheap but worth it. My husband who doesn't particularly like Italian cuisine said he couldn't fault the meal. He loved the food, the wine & the prompt service, even though it was very busy. We'll definitely be back. Thank you La Luna.

Arrived on time for our evening meal and our table was ready.Drinks order taken within 5 minutes always a good sign. Our meals were excellent as was the overall service.The restaurant was very busy always an indication of how good it is. Will definitely visit again!

La Luna is now our go-to place every time we visit Halifax. Having now visited several times we have not been disappointed whether it has been the breakfast or lunch menu. It's clean and well presented and the staff are always helpful. The food is plentiful, hot, well-presented, and very tasty. It must be good as it is always busy. See you soon!!!

Meatballs and spaghetti are amazing! Lovely rich flavour. Service is okay, nothing wrong with it just nothing special. The interior design is lovely. Been here 5 times now and would go back :)

Beautiful place to dine. Went for Valentines day and ot was perfect. Starters were the scallops and duck rolls. Everything was delicious Mains were the Fillet of Beef with lobster tail. Both cooked to perfection 👌 Desserts were the lemon meringue and profiteroles a perfect end to a perfect meal. Worth the price and the portions were a great size. We were satisfied and stuffed!

Nice place. Been a few times but I think my friend who booked it wasn’t happy because she was confused about breakfast timings on the website. Apparently breakfast orders are taken until 11:45. After that you can still order one of three breakfast stacks until 1pm.

This is worth a visit. The deco is stunning. The service was great and the food was delicious. The food did not take long to come out. 5*

Lovely meal with attentive service in modern setting. Located in the Westgate arcade. A tad expensive but worth it.

When it came to changing my babies nappy I found there was no changing facilities downstairs in the toilets. I asked a member of staff and they told me there was no baby changing facilities at the restaurant but I could use the sofas upstairs. When I went upstairs there was a member of staff sat there who did not acknowledge me. The sofa in question were part of the dining area. As there was a stranger there I was not able to change my child privately, nor would I have wanted to change a soiled nappy at a sofa attached to a table for hygiene purposes. I resorted to changing my baby on the floor. From what I could see there are four toilets in the restaurant, amble space to provide one baby changing unit. La luna has also been open a number of years, which would lead me to presume that I am not the first mother needing to change her child at the restaurant. Based on this it seems the lack of facilities is purposeful and discriminatory. Leading to a non-inclusive environment.

Visited on a Saturday evening for a pre theatre meal and we were not disappointed. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked and delicious especially with the stem broccoli, chunky chips and peppercorn sauce. It was really busy in the restaurant but the service was good and the staff were lovely. Will certainly be back again.

Excellent place for a little lunch when out shopping.

Sorry to give this feedback. They are not friendly at all. When I asked for another place to sit, they offered me the place under stairs, which was awful. However, the two tables next to me are empty. I asked for ketchup, which I never got. Despite not being busy, I waited for the bill. Only thing that comes to mind is that I'm not local.

I wished to attend the restaurant with a friend to celebrate her birthday but when I asked if we could have a table, a rather rude employee point blank advised that they have a no pram policy and that I should leave my pram outside....

The menu could offer more for vegans and no vegan desert option at all! Come on La Luna at least some vegan ice cream!

We visited at lunch time on a weekend, and the restaurant was pretty busy. They had run out/didn't have quite a few of the menu items but the food we had was very nice. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Good good in a nice location. Second visit now, always busy which is a good sign. Reasonable prices too. We sat outside but there were heaters which were lovely on a freezing wet day.

My 4th visit to this restaurant. I love it! It’s a great place to meet up with friends for lunch. The staff are warm , friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is lovely and the food is excellent. I’ve tried the meatballs, the lasagne and the flatbreads and I would give them all five stars.

We were shown a table, for two, inside the restaurant. We were not asked whether we were just having a drink, or dining. The waitress came and asked for our drinks order which was for two hot drinks. We settled in, took our coats off...

The food here is always tasty and fresh! I would recommend the meatballs or the steak sandwich. Reasonably priced and the place has eye-catching decor. The only critique I'd make is that the waiter sat us next to a red-hot radiator and departed before we could say anything. So we moved tables ourselves.

How do I give it 2 stars when I give it 5 for everything? Easy arrive to our booked table on time wait 20 mins for a drink, then get told no seafood, no lamb no duck so pizza and pasta neither of which I am particularly bothered for. When I asked why I was given a very short we have been busy answer. Picked here to celebrate my birthday and my brothers 50th, I wanted a treat but unfortunately if you want to eat from the full menu do not come at night. My partner and 82 year old mother in law visited this cafe bar late Saturday afternoon. We spoke to the waiter and asked him if he had a table available for us to have a hot drink, we were not eating. The waiter showed us to our table and returned after 5 minutes and took our order of three hot drinks. We waited a further fifteen minutes when the manager of the bar came to the table told us our order was not available and we should leave (throwing the printout of our order on the floor) This was after the lunchtime rush with several empty tables and most other diners finishing their meals. I have no idea why this situation happened and the manager felt the need to humiliate three customers.

Just a really disappointing experience all round The service was dire not once were we checked on merely a what do you want and then placed on table. Had wait 15 mins for someone to notice that we had actually finished and take the dishes away. Didn't even ask if we liked the food which we didn't. To add insult to injury add a 10% service charge Pizza has a weird sort of sweet tinge to it and the pasta was not the greatest at all Not cheap and not that tasty but the poor service is what really let's it down

Food is lovely even if abit overpriced. I normally love this place but the atmosphere today wasnt great, I felt like I had walked into a private party, the wait staff spent more time running around after each other and chatting with family, friends and obvious regulars to not notice I'd tried to get their attention for a drink, had to go to the bar myself which when paying a service charge shouldn't be the case. Shame really because the food is top notch.

The positives to this place, are the location and atmosphere, really nice decor inside and out. Unfortunately, thats where the positives end… I ordered meatball linguine (described on the menu as “the best homemade”). They were processed and the pasta sauce was very watery and cold. I couldn’t finish my meal, it was that bad. My partner ordered lasagne and had the same complaint, processed and cold. This place isn’t cheap, so if you’re looking for a nice meal, definitely avoid this place. Also, we weren’t happy with the added service charge as the service was pretty bad. When asked if I enjoyed my meal, I was honest and said no, they didn’t seem to care and just took the plates. Wasted meal out

Great food and fast to bring it out too

Food delivered, my fillet steak was flavoursome and cooked just how I requested it. My one complaint would be the accompanying peppercorn sauce was a bit to runny and didn't have a lot of flavour.

My husband and I had a lovely lunch here recently. We had brunch which was delicious and service was super friendly and quick. It's beautifully decorated too.

Whilst the food was lovely, and the venue was pretty, the accessibility for parents and elderly/those with mobility issues was sub par and took away from the overall experience. It was disappointing my baby had to sleep on a chair and sit in a high chair that was way too big for her and had no tray table. If she was a month younger, not sure how we would've been able to attend as we don't have a capsule and she wouldn't be able to sit up (she's only 4 months old). With that, the server made it very unpleasant when discussing it. She was not helpful at all and was rather dismissing/rude. Wasn't impressed.

The food here is always good, the atmosphere and service is impeccable and the location is also lovely. I've only rated the food 4 stars as my steak wasn't the best and I'd recently had a better one at Mezze in Brighouse. Edit: I got a really good salt aged rib eye recently so my review is changing for 5 stars everything! (See newest photos)

We decided to sit inside, which was lovely as it was a little more quiet. We came to celebrate our 7 year wedding anniversary, a rare occasion of having a date without our 2 young children. The food was great, good flavours and very good portions, we had starters mains and deserts. I was very disappointed in the service, the waiter didn’t really speak! He was quiet abrupt, didn’t make eye contact or any sort of conversation. Also he was very slow to come back to us, I had asked for a desert menu after our mains and he didn’t bring one, another waiter came to ask if we wanted more drinks and I then asked him for a menu which he brought straight away. When it came to paying the bill our waiter was nowhere in sight, we looked around and waited for a while before just getting someone else’s attention and asking for the bill. Because of the service I would be hesitant of going back, I’d perhaps try other places first.

We asked what seafood specials were available as it suggests you do on the menu and were told they had everything apart from one dish. When it came time to order they told us they didn’t have various dishes. Then tried to order something off the normal menu to be told they didn’t have that. Small portion for price on specials. Slow service: were told this was because it was bank holiday as if that was our fault. Got charged 10% optional service charge for 2 people but didn’t realise until we had left as it was added to our bill automatically. We had discussed not leaving a tip due to low quality service so wouldn’t have paid this if we had realised.

Food was really tasty, enjoyed the swordfish with potatoes and veg. Shared homemade tiramisu for dessert, was a real treat, plenty for two. Staff was friendly and helpful, would go back and try the lemon meringue next time 😋

My husband and I shared a Mezza and a portion of fries it was absolutely delicious. We will definitely go again. The downsides there was a number of children being really noisy with a large group on a table nearby. I also don't approve of a service charge being added that DOESN'T go to the staff. Shame on you La Luna and, on reflection, because of this slight of hand in cheating both staff and customers we won't be returning unless this is stopped. I will be recommending people not to go.

There will never be enough stars to award La Luna! Long time customer - my family have been coming here since they were a small one-unit cafe. Now at least a three unit with upstairs AND covered outdoor seating, La Luna has definitely put themselves on the Halifax map. Locals will have eaten here at least once in their life, and visitors should make it a priority to splurge a bit and eat here. The food is absolutely amazing (don’t let a price tag scare you!). Tonight we had Gambas Italiano, Scallops, Halloumi Fries, Filet Steak, Lobster Duo, Duck Trio, Lobster and Prawn Tagliatelle, Strawberry Cheesecake, Lemon Meringue, and Tiramisu. Everything is homemade in the restaurant, cooked to perfection, the quality is out of this world, and the portions are astoundingly big. Some are turned off by the automatic Service Charge on the bill, but you can request to remove this (though personally I couldn’t, the staff are polite, lovely, funny, and very fast). I’m going to stop here as I don’t think I could give La Luna the praise it deserves! Overall a must-try for any visitor or tourist coming to see Halifax’s many beautiful sites (conveniently close to the famous Piece Hall and Square Chapel!). Thank you once again xo
