I was fancy a Japanese so I looked the closest one and I found this place, so I decided to go. The atmosphere is quite relaxing and warm. The lady that runs it is very nice. The food is incredible good and the prices are decent. If you are looking for authentic Japanese food, in a friendly atmosphere for a decent price, do not think twice!

We visited this restaurant for a friend's birthday as she has spent time in Tokyo, and loved it. We were not disappointed in any way by Kurlya Kelko , the food , the service and the atmosphere.

This is my second visit to Kuriya Keiko, a lovely little restaurant off Hornsey Street 5 minutes from Holloway Road tube station. 1. Food - wholesome home cooking with generous portions. Everything we tried was good and served piping hot. No pretentious, overpriced sashimi starter that costs an arm a gram here ;) 2. Staff - the owner, Keiko san, could not be nicer. The waiter (Diego) was helpful and friendly throughout our dinner. I had to organise a mini Xmas party for 5 people - I had to change my booking twice, but no moans or groans from the restaurant. They also let us bring our own crackers and decorate the table to our heart's content!! 3. Location - this is perhaps where the restaurant is being let down. It is actually very conveniently located in the Islington Studios just a stone's throw from Holloway station. However, the restaurant itself is not visible from Hornsey Street (need to bend left as you hit the entrance to the studios). 4. Events/Cookery classes - the restaurant also hosts events and cookery classes. I have yet to try their classes, but I thoroughly enjoyed the mini Japanese concert they held there!! Overall, I am surprised that not more people have discovered this gem of a restaurant yet!! Oh, where are thou, all ye students of the nearby London Metropolitan University? :)

I come here every day for the £5 meal deal and the sashimi sushi and miso soup is first class. It is a welcome addition to the locality.

This is going to be an unusual review in that I can't think of another restaurant where I've enjoyed the food very much whilst taking an active dislike to the restaurant interior. The quality of food is all that really matters, right? If so, please read the next paragraph and ignore what follows it! My wife had already visited Tanakatsu several times with her friends. We both had a lunchtime bento box, which was expertly prepared with wonderfully crisp pork katsu, tasty salmon teriyaki on good quality rice, an excellent pumpkin croquette, a small selection of high-class sushi and a fine side salad on which you could drizzle the owner's "mighty dressing", served with miso soup. I really couldn't fault it. Another big tick from me for the modest 7.5% service charge. So what about the internal layout? It's actually quite spacious with plenty of natural light but the internal concrete walls were for me unappealing and the overall decor off-putting. Along two walls are some tightly spaced and rather small tables. The one we were shown to was unpleasantly sticky and our conversation drowned by an exceptionally loud man next to us conducting a job interview in a domineering manner. On the other sides were two long 'shelves' which I suppose was the inspiration for the unusual restaurant name ('tana' = 'shelf'). I can understand the logic - it makes it easier to accommodate solo diners - but surely the point of sitting diners side by side is that there should be something more interesting to look at than a very uninspiring street or concrete wall. Also it leaves so much wasted floorspace in the middle! Anyway if you think these observations petty and unnecessary - just go there and you'll have a really good meal.

Very good sushi with a great value for money. The takoyaki were not as crispy as in other Japanese restaurants, but were still decent. Nice place to eat at if you are in the area. The staff was very friendly too. Will definitely come back.

The nigiri sushi is fresh and delicious, the wasabi is ground by hand, and the chef's workmanship is top-notch. Watching the chef make it is an artistic enjoyment.
