An outstanding experience and food was brilliant too and it was a delight to meet Mr Han , the owner, whose passion for excellence was clear.

We were in London for a few days and we were really looking forward to eating in this restaurant. I had been previously many many years ago but not with my family. On arrival, we were ‘greeted’ by this sour bunch of three ladies, one who confirmed our reservation, one who took our coats and one who showed us to the table. We were put off by this but we were looking forward to our meal so we simply ignored this. Once we saw the exorbitant menu prices (around £29 per dish), we decided to just order a main course only to be asked by the waitress, “is that it? That’s all you are going to order?” What we decide to order is our choice and do not expect to be ‘judged’ by a waitress! Again, we decided to ‘brush this off’ and ordered our meal. To describe this as a ‘meal’ is an understatement! The chicken in black bean sauce had maybe 6 small pieces of chicken, perhaps 50g at most. This was spongy and with no texture at all. I can honestly say that if I ate it blindfolded I would never guess that it was chicken! The spare ribs came absolutely drowned in a thick gloopy sauce and the meat was like a rubber boot and again with not enough to feed a kitten and the fried rice was way undercooked and hard. At this point I had had enough and decided to ask for the owner/manager. Two or three servers came in turn before the actual owner decided to grace us with his presence. At no point did I raise my voice as I had no intention of disturbing other diners. The owner, Norman his name was berated us in a loud voice that he had over 40 years experience in the restaurant business and that no one had ever complained about his food and that he only served prime cuts. He also said that this was kosher food and that we had no idea what kosher food was all about!! We eat kosher at home and when we eat out and he had no right whatsoever to judge us like this! All the other customers were now staring at us making the situation highly embarrassing to say the least! HE then literally threw us out of the restaurant. Looking at the reviews here on Tripadvisor I can clearly see that other people HAVE complained and rightly so, and shared similar experiences to ours. Norman, if you ever read this (and I think you should) please take heed. I will post this review on Tripadvisor and on all Kosher restaurant review sites I can find! Shame on you and shame on your establishment!

We went for a family lunch on 25th December. The service and food were excellent. The restaurant was full but not crowded. The decor was light and elegant. The service was wonderful, despite there being 4 sittings, we were not rushed and the food for each course arrived in good time. We ordered from the set menu and supplemented it with some a la carte items. Nothing was too much trouble for the team serving us - they were very attentive but not intrusive. I can highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely add it to my list of favourites.

We have been coming to this restaurant since the late 1980s. This visit was very disappointing. The prices had gone up substantially the portions had shrunk inversely to the increase in the price. The signature dish, fried chilli beef was All batter and had no meat in it at all, at least that could be identified . The noodles were mediocre. The other two main portions were very good. Prices have gone up generally, but this restaurant has taken advantage of the fact.

I would leave zero stars if I could for the Kaifeng (Glatt Kosher Chinese) ...Terrible! It’s not a “Place for a Simcha”, as they said… No way! The duck (!!!) was very, very dry and tasted like feet, and the eggplants were not cooked well… Service from start to finish was bad: I would say the worst customer service in London! It was overall, a very bad experience. Finally, they charged an exorbitant bill. So, the slogan for the Kaifeng should be - "Tasteless, Expensive, and Unpleasant"! Don’t spend your money there!!!

I've said before that I think Kaifeng is possibly the best kosher restaurant in London, occasionally let down only by the boorishness of a tiny minority of other diners. On this visit we were able to enjoy the restaurant at its best and, like us, the friends we were with were extremely impressed by the ambience, food, and friendly, attentive service. They also remain incredibly Covid-secure, insisting on face masks , hand sanitiser and temperature checks. I like the decor, which is soothing woods and paintings, with deep carpeting meaning you can talk at the table without having to shout. I like that they have proper linens on and at the table, which all brings the experience up a notch. And I also like the fact that the owner is usually there, and his long-serving staff all get to know we 'regulars'. Kaifeng isn't cheap, but the tasty food is surprisingly filling and I don't think a cost of £39 each for a starter, main course, drinks and service is at all bad. We were so full there was no room for dessert! Remember to ask for your scratchcard when you pay the bill, as they run a promotion where each scratchcard can give you 15-100% off your bill.

My wife and I went to this restaurant this evening for our wedding anniversary. A special restaurant for a special anniversary. Everything was amazing from start to finish at Kaifeng. The staff are so welcoming and they really do care. The food was out of this world. It was absolutely amazing. Even the decor was very impressive. We will definitely be back there. Thank you Kaifeng for making our anniversary so special

Kaifeng is in a class of its own when it comes to kosher restaurants in London. It’s pricey (though ask for their discount scratch card for your next visit as it gives 15-100pc off) but worth it. Food is fresh and tasty and service (on fresh linen) attentive. Covid precautions are superb. The set menus are best value and we were very full after the mid-priced one (£48 each). The main courses were wonderful. The Chinese tea was perfect and refills free and plentiful. Drinks are otherwise expensive. There’s an ok selection for vegetarians and a good fish selection but this is primarily a meat restaurant. The staff also dealt well with the inconsiderate behaviour of a small number of guests, unfortunately all seated next to us. At one table they were loud, rude and sarcastic to staff and then started vaping inside the restaurant, joined by another chap who also started vaping. Illegal in the UK as well they knew. We too had to have words and they stopped (though then were sassy about us in Yiddish as they wrongly thought we wouldn’t understand). One young couple managed to move tables away from these gentlemen but no other table was available for the size of our party unfortunately. My advice is to sit downstairs where it’s quieter as the larger parties sit upstairs. But as I say, the staff dealt with these men effectively and professionally and our evening was not unduly affected as a result.

Kaifeng isn’t cheap but the food is consistently good, the ambience is lovely and the staff friendly and efficient. We had one dish which wasn’t up to their usual high standards and we were immediately offered a replacement or for it to be taken off the bill. They made a real fuss of my wife (it was her birthday) which was lovely. The only downside was the brusqueness of some of the other diners, something I’ve not seen at Kaifeng before and which the Kaifeng team handled professionally and effectively. Their Covid controls are superb - temperature checks and hand sanitiser on arrival, team all wearing masks, tables and chairs thoroughly cleaned between use. And well ventilated (at least until some of the more dramatic diners complained they’d ‘die of cold’!).

Kaifeng isn’t cheap but it could well be the best kosher restaurant in London. It has strict Covid protocols in place with temperature checks on entry and a huge hand sanitising station. Its food remains as fresh, hot and tasty as we remembered from those pre-Covid days when we were last there, and it was lovely to renew our acquaintance with what felt like an old friend. Well done Kaifeng and to its loyal, long-standing team, for keeping up its high standards even in these tricky times.

Some people have written some very negative reviews here. I don't know which restaurant they went to - perhaps they are just fussy belligerent folk, or perhaps they had an unfortunate experience, I don't know. I have never been disappointed by Kaifeng's food or service, though they can be busy. Kaifeng is the best Kosher Restaurant I know. The food is top notch and entirely Kosher and authentically Chinese. Unfortunately they know they are the best, and they charge accordingly and remain busy. So only go if you are prepared to pay well for your meal. We looked at a family celebration of my son's bar-mitzvah and decided we simply could not afford it. Do check the web site and ask, as there is normally a discount of at least 10% as standard. Most recently my wife and I went for our 30th wedding anniversary. The staff appear to all be Chinese but strangely they have backed off from the Chinese decor they used to have and gone from some more western paintings on the walls. Also we were given chop-sticks, as soon as we asked, but the default setting was a knife and fork. Perhaps they know their clientelle and have found a lot of people don't like things too "strange". COVID-19 precautions were satisfactory (we went during a lull in the pandemic). Still a great restaurant if you can afford to eat there.

A friend ordered a takeaway for us. Many times with takeaways the food loses some flavour. Not in this case. It was first class. We enjoyed it so much that we visited Kaifeng for lunch the following week. Absolutely wonderful.. The food was top class quality & the cocktails were very tasty. Service was very friendly. The precautions taken were very reassuring with masks worn by the staff, temperatures being taken & hand sanitation. It also has a 5 star hygiene rating. The cost might be a little higher than ordinary Chinese restaurants, but this is kosher food & Kaifeng is top quality & no ordinary restaurant. Will be having more takeaways & meals.

Went with a friend. They are very attentive about the virus and every time someone left the table they stripped it and sprayed all the chairs and tables and wiped everything down. All the staff are wearing gloves and masks. On entry they check your temperature and ask you to wash your hands. So far so good The food. Portions are of a generous size and cooked to order. Chicken and beef dishes were exceptional and was everything else we had. Cocktails and also very good. It’s kosher so not cheap but honestly the food was great. The staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant tonight was busy and almost full but with tables spaced apart. I can’t complain about any aspect and will be retuning very soon. About 20 years ago this place was great. Living out of town, it’s been that long since I last visited, and it’s still good - but probably not great anymore. The food was good, with plenty of choice, and my starter of chicken spring rolls was good (although a slightly small portion), as was my main course of pineapple chicken. The whole family was happy with their choices, but the service was a bit haphazard. So, I had finished my starter by the time my son’s arrived (we had to chase for it - there had been some mix-up in the kitchen), and it was difficult to attract attention from the staff when we were wanting to lay the bill and leave. You couldn’t fault them for their attention to social distancing measures, though - staggering arrival times (you ad to ring from the car outside), testing temperatures, enforcing hand-sanitizer etc - fair play to them. It’s just a pity that the staff weren’t a bit less socially distant towards the end of the meal! Maybe life has moved in since the halcyon days when Kaifeng ruled the roof - or maybe we just caught them on a particularly busy ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ night.

My pregnant wife and I came to Kaifeng after a full day of traveling and were excited to eat a nice hot kosher Chinese meal, however, we had no idea for the horror show we were about to experience. We walked in to find the restaurant completely empty with one of the male servers petulantly asking us if we had a reservation and making it seem like he was doing us a favor by accommodating us.As we were seated we treated to a nice table and served small peanuts and some small fried wonton strips. When trying to order, we asked the hostess for recommendations and were stared at as if we came from another planet with a blank expressionless look. We ended up ordering two main courses and the staff condescendingly asked why we were not ordering more food. The food came out in less than five minutes (always a bad sign) and the portions were shockingly small. I'm talking maybe less than 5-6 pieces of chicken per plate (maybe 100 grams max including 90% of it being peanuts and veggies) and no sides to boot, all for the hefty price of £23 a plate. My wife and I stared at each other in disbelief and couldn't believe we were being ripped off so badly! We called the server over who in turn "spoke to her manager" and went back to the kitchen for another five minutes only to add a few peanuts onto only one of our dishes to make it look bigger (again this portion size wouldn't satisfy a baby squirrel). After calling the manager again we were met with rude and condescending comments telling us "this isn't America" and going on and on about how this is KOSHER CHINESE food (which in our experience serves normal portions). We were treated with such disrespect and spoken to in such a demeaning manner that we had to simply get up and leave. I can honestly say that I have NEVER been treated so badly in a restaurant. The manager barked at us like a rabid dog and made childlike comments that honestly made me feel so embarrassed that I had recommended it to my wife. I remember coming here and enjoying it but it seems to have very much gone downhill and then some. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless by chance you happen to be into paying for horrible service and minimal food. I seriously would avoid this place like the plague, your wallet, and your stomach will agree with me and thank you.

Though the interior of the restaurant is very pleasant any good review from me stops there. The prices are astronomical but we were prepared to pay this as we had hoped our meal would be excellent ...it wasn't. Our starter of vegetarian spring rolls contained very little & was under cooked ...not fresh but fresh out of a packet.I was hungry & should have asked for my disgusting duck with orange to be taken back but as we were with a guest I was embarrassed to do so. The duck was really awful with a congealed thick orange sauce that was heavily poured over the slices of tasteless slices of duck ... it was beyond bad at £24 ! The horrible vegetables were meager in the extreme. My wife's chicken with pineapple was bland & awful too & she couldn't hardly eat it at all. Our other guest had the lamb that she complained had a strange taste to it. I couldn't contain myself anymore & did complain, only to be told by the Manageress that the chef disagreed with my criticism & the food was fine. We then got the bill which was not itemized so it was impossible to check it . The restaurant gave us a 20% discount but it still came to £96 without dessert, a couple of tonics a beer & a 15% service charge. I am sure that the bill was wrong - we just wanted to get out of this joint.

Took family from London who warned us about prices. Food was above average and came out from the kitchen right on time. Service was very good at our table. Crispy duck was great and we had a number of other dishes. Deserts were very tasty. All enjoyed the meal but coming from Canada I was a little shocked at the price...around £250 for 6 of us after a 10% discount. And only 2 Chinese beers on the alcohol side. So be prepared.

We directly look for a special restaurant. We eat just kosher meet, so when visit Beijing we ate just vegetables and fruits. So we wish try the Chinese meaty food too.The enviroment lovely, the staff was nice. The food was really nothing. I ate rib, tried the beef, rice and noodles too. The taste wasn't bad, but not as tasty than in China or the corner take away in Coventry, UK.The price was a bit higher than the average in London, but the 15% service fee is too high. The main dishes coming without side.Maybe one speciality enough when you going to eat.

The menu and food were not bad (shredded duck and pancakes were good). Ambiance was quite good, and not too noisy. However, the service was unfriendly. In addition, the cost of the meal was astronomical and this was not helped by a compulsory 15% tip which is added to the bill. I usally eat in Metsu-yan, where the food is at least as good, for not much more than half the price.

We usually go to Met Su Yan for Kosher Chinese food but thought we'd try Kaifeng which I haven't been to for 20 years- now I recall why. A very average meal where the quality of the food is below average cost us an eye wateringly £177 and that with no alcohol and we didn't particularly order much food - also one of was wanted fish and there was not one fish dish available. Service to be fair friendly but this is not even a special occasion restaurant so to be avoided unless you have more money than sense and even then you'd need locking up!

Kaifeng offers exceptionally tasty Chinese food (kosher) and impeccably attentive service. Coats are kept at a small room in the front so that they do not absorb any food smells. The interior design is beautiful and the atmosphere charming and intimate. We will definitely come back very soon.

My wife and I visited Kaifeng for dinner 20th March . Apart from our having to complain that the food was cold. My wife found two long pieces of string in the chicken noodle soup. At the end of the evening the waitress asked if everything was alright although she knew it was not. Don't bother going to Kaifeng

We were very disappointed by the food at this Kosher Chinese restaurant. The decor is very nice and the staff are friendly and attentive with the waiting staff wearing beautiful traditional dress. The food however was appallingly bad and extremely expensive.Egg fried rice was £7, a very small portion, it was cold and tasted bland. The chicken was not cooked properly, and bizarrely for a kosher restaurant, several pieces had blood on them - the first rule of kosher meat is that it must not contain blood! The meat was also covered in slimy grease, and again, it was a very small portion considering the price was in the region of £16 for a main course dish with no sides included. I don't recommend this restaurant at all, and I can't believe they are able to get away with charging such high prices for such mediocre food.Avoid.

Went there for a dinner, 9pm and asked if it was still open, they said yes. We sat at the table and they came straight away asking for ordering drinks and food. They seemed being in rush..we were having the starter and they asked us if the could bring the mains. Still with the mains at the table they asked if we had done as they wanted to clear the table. Once taken the plates we were still sitting and they removed the clothes from the table, I was totally surprised. The bill: £83 for 2 starters 2 main one beer one juice and 15% service wow. We asked for the service to be removed and they didn't want, the boss came saying that it was written in the menu so it was to be paid. We told him that by laws the service is optional and the old man started insulting us. I still can't believe that, a really unpleasant dinner. Expansive for some food that I can find for 1 forth of the price. Not recommended at all.

Where to start....? This old fashioned badly decorated restaurant is from a bygone era of yesteryear. Very unfriendly staff couldn't muster up a smile on the freezing cold night in question. It was I who felt compelled to show manners and to do the greeting and say "good evening". It went downhill from then on. The crushed together tables were laid with nuts and sweet crisps covered in sugar. WHAT??? The stair carpet was torn in places. The menus were grubby, with pages stuck together...shall I continue? The crispy duck for the pancakes was decidedly dry and the plum sauce was a thick sickly sweet gloop. Our friends' food arrived at different times and most of it was cold. Any fillet of fish order came complete with bones and was disgusting. All this for an eye watering bill which was OUTRAGEOUSLY over the top.Everything about it was ghastly and I can say with hand on heart, I will neither recommend nor return. What a rip-off.

Being strictly kosher I am unable to judge how authentic this chinese restaurant is. However I can say the food was, for the most part, delicious. We had a deluxe dinner menu. The crispy duck was very good. The other dishes that followed hard and fast were all attractively served and palatable. Some were very good and others ok. Overall the only criticism I have is that some o the stuff was a little bland (the chicken breast with mango springs to mind. There were no stand out dishes but compared to all the other kosher options in London this is still the best so far for me.

What a disappointment. It was a long time since we had been to Kaifeng as we live out of town. We decided to give it a go as it recently made it into a Sunday Times best restaurant supplement. The food was nothing more than ok. Some of the courses we sent back as they were absolutely disgusting. A lot of the dishes were swimming in MSG. Revolting. Finally, the bill. Wow! A full 15% service on top of an already shockingly overpriced expensive meal. We will never go back.

Kaifeng is in my opinion the best kosher Chinese restaurant in London. However, it is quite expensive. The Sunday lunch buffet is a good option if you'd like to sample a number of their dishes, eat until you pop, but not break the bank. We ordered a table for 8 a few weeks in advance, which was probably a good thing as the restaurant was totally full. They served corn soup, egg rolls, fried crackers, sweet and sour sauce, rice, chow mein, sesame chicken, spiced ribs, sweet and sour lamb and some sort of a beef dish, as well as two types of fried dumplings for dessert-apple and banana. The food was very tasty, although the sweet and sour lamb ( my favourite dish) had even tinier pieces of lamb inside the dough than usual. If I remember correctly, it cost £22 a head, which is very reasonable as its only a few pounds more than one main course would usually cost. All the food is set up on one table, which at times was quite difficult to access due to the number of people in the restaurant. However, you can fill and refill your plate to your hearts desire. The service was excellent. The waitresses came by frequently to remove dirty plates, and to refill water glasses. My only disappointment was that they hadn't included their yummy seaweed on the menu. Guess I'll have to return next time I'm in London.

From start to finish, Kaifeng was a delight. The staff was friendly, gracious and seemed to function according to ancient traditions as they explained the menu and served each course. The menu is plentiful, the dishes tasty, generous and the drinks are creative. The egg roles were superb, the ribs were spiced just right and the crispy duck was crisped to perfection. I enjoyed every bite and every minute of this restaurant and look forward to my next visit to London to enjoy my next Kaifeng experience.

The service is impeccable - welcoming, speedy, efficient and occasionally with a big smile too.The food can't be faulted - it's a very good example of a Chinese Restaurant - all of the dishes I tried were very tasty.I especially liked the Crispy Beef and the Sizzling Three Meats. The price isn't cheap though - you expect to pay a premium for kosher food in London but add a little extra on for Kaifeng - it's prices are at the smart end of the spectrum. It was a lovely evening with good company and good food and I recommend Kaifeng to anyone with deep enough pockets.

Hair was found on the plate, instead of acting humane, they were soooo rude, no apology was fundamentally given, they were defensive and even denied the hair on the plate. Ok, Yes it's a little bit on the pricey side, (compared to other kosher restaurants nearby) but you get what you pay for. The other places nearby are like glorified cafes. This is a proper higher end restaurant. There is NO other kosher restaurant that comes even close to Kaifeng for tasty food, ambience, quality and most importantly consistency. Food is alway tasty no matter what day of the week and is presented lovely and you don't have to wait forever. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with mahogany and velvet, relaxing not overbearing lighting, and there is beautiful framed oil paintings on the wall. Tables have clean white pressed tablecloths and the whole place simply is inviting. The service and the managers are all lovely. To anyone who may think staff may seem rude as per a couple of previous reviews, you need to understand their chinese sense of humour is slightly different then the English version we are used to. I have Chinese staff myself and I can assure you they are always just trying to make people smile and joke with customers with a little 'chinese style' sarcasm that maybe doesn't always pull off perfectly, but they do try to please, and they certainly don't actually mean to be rude at all. Service is excellent, even when busy. They run to fill your glasses when empty, they hand you clean napkins when they sense you need it, and they even jump over to give you a new chopstick when they see you drop a chopstick accidently on the floor. Tell me of another kosher restaurant in London that even changes your tablecloth in between courses? Only at Kaifeng... Now I'm not saying one must always go and sit down in the restaurant for a long meal every week when they fancy kosher Chinese - that I reserve for special occasions, But luckily their takeaway/delivery menu is just as good, with reasonable sized portions, slightly lower pricing then a sit down evening dinner, and they always seem to get my orders ready in 20 minutes and have always so far got it right. Never had a mistake in the takeaway or delivery. All in all, I highly recommend going to the restaurant when you need some pampering or wish to have a good night out with the wife or with friends and family, (and have the time to relax and enjoy), but I also recomend the takeaway or delivery service when you want yummy Chinese kosher food delivered relatively quickly to your door or for a quick pick up without a long wait if your passing by Hendon. You may even be offered a glass of whiskey by the manager while you wait... All in all perfect and I always pop in when in London which is multiple times per year.

I attended Kaifeng today to meet friends who were celebrating a birthday by having the lunchtime buffet. Without wanting to eat, I ordered a soft drink, whilst the other members of our party had the buffet. On receiving the bill, Kaifeng had charged me for the buffet, despite having a drink. Having denied eating, I was told by the server "the manager saw you eat" - a completely fabricated claim. Having approached the manager (her name was Kay or Kate), she said "I charged you for eating because I saw you eat", a falsehood which was denied by every member of the party too. I told her that I hadn't and that I simply ordered a soft drink and she screamed "liar". Not only was this false accusation incredibly offensive, it was embarrassing and something you don't expect to hear from the manager. I asked her to show me on CCTV proof I had eaten or to call a server over who she now claimed saw me eat. Eventually she stood down and said "it's your fault for not telling us when you entered the restaurant that you weren't eating". Is that not the job of the server? To inquire if every customer is eating? Apologies for the long message and thank you for reading. I don't expect anything to be done about her attitude/customer service but the party was ruined and none of us will be returning to the restaurant. Simply a disgusting customer service and to accuse a customer of lying, is a new low.

I love Kaifeng so to see it less good than it was feels almost personal. But it simply isn't what it once was: we had to send a main course back as it was under-cooked and gristly; the food seems more oily and saltier; and there's simply less meat in the meat dishes.Sadly it feels like they're either trying to cut back without raising prices (already high) further and/or there's a new chef who's struggling to source and cook as well as the old one.Service is still good and the crispy duck wonderful and the place has a gentle ambience which we still find soothing. My last review hoped Kaifeng would quickly rediscover its sparkle, but on this showing I'm afraid it still has a way to go.

I opted for the vegetarian set menu but asked as I am thrthe only vegetarian if I could order it for one...There were 5 other adults ordering other menu's. I got a flat out rude NO! Not an accommodating manager who was very rude.....very overpriced food. My sister said she would order the vegetarian menu with me....they add 15% service and charge for tap water! Realised what I had was £34 and so not worth it! I love Chinese food and thought that even though it's a Kosher restaurant as a veggie it'll be fine.....Unfortunately it was not! I wouldn't recommend going unless you are strictly kosher.....a real disappointment. But they have their demographic with virtually no competition in London so doubt they'd be bothered with my poor review!

We love Kaifeng so to drop it a couple of stars in my review is a disappointment for us. But when we went for one of its famous Sunday buffet lunches it had lost some of its quality and I have to reflect on how it is, not how we'd have liked it to be.The buffet is well priced and all you can eat, and the food used to be top notch and seemingly endless. Neither is true any more: the beef was still very good but everything else was gristly and the wait times to refill the buffet long. There were insufficient noodles and vegetables and the choice of main course was much reduced. Desserts were still toffee banana and toffee apple but the cases were soft and they simply weren't great. It wasn't bad, but it was nowhere near its previous high standards and when a place has been at the top of its game for so long, slips show. Right now I'd hesitate to recommend Kaifeng as it's a premium priced proposition where for the first time ever the food doesn't live up to the billing, at least for Sunday buffet lunch. I really hope they rediscover their magic as until that Sunday this had been my favourite kosher restaurant in London.

The beef with Cashew Nuts was very good, four braised vegetables was good but the Chicken in Black Bean sauce wasn't very good it tasted like the chicken & sauce had been cooked separately & the special fried rise was just tasteless!
