Kafeneon in Newcastle upon Tyne

Hi, Visited here on a busy Sunday Afternoon party of two called on spec and was lucky enough to get table what more can I say but absolutely excellent the staff were super (especially the manager) the restaurant has a lovely ambiance the food and drinks were superb and really good value we left very full and very happy we will definitely be back.

Exceptional food, well presented. Staff and service friendly and excellent. Highly recommended.

Delicious food!! We nipped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, seated straight away and had lovely service. Atmosphere was nice and staff were lovely. Food was amazing!!! We ordered the chicken gyros and the Greek club pitta toastie. Huge portions and was so tasty. Super cheap too! Highly reccomend

I’ve been here loads of times and can’t fault the food or service. Was part of a group of 15 for a late lunch. Service was great we all got our food at the same time. Not rushed and was very relaxed. The lunchtime deal is great value. £15.95 for a starter and main. I had Saganaki and chicken souvlaki. This comes with chips though I opted for none. One thing to note is accessibility. There is not much room to manoeuvre upstairs and there are steps to the toilet so bear this in mind if you have these needs

We turned up as a family of five after a graduation ceremony without a booking, and they were incredibly graceful in accommodating us. We had the floor to ourselves, the service was outstanding and the food was so good even the fussy toddler enjoyed it! I am writing this review a day later and still thinking about the it... we'll be back!

I have been coming here as a visitor to Newcastle for 10 years. Not very often. But, over that 10 years this Greek restaurant has remained a place I would always trust. The food is great. The service is efficient and friendly. The value is excellent. I used to live in Germany where there was a local Greek restaurant. And Kafeneon reminds me of that. I know what I will order. I know I will like it. I know I will be welcome. I know I will leave happy. I know I will return. What more can I ask for? Pork Souvlaki...

I went a year ago and used to be a massive fan of their gyros and fresh handcut chips, we just revisited tonight and the food has went very downhill the chicken has drastically changed to what seems like ready made frozen chicken and the chips are also now just frozen fries. The service wasn't amazing either I was asked why I left a prawn and once our orders were taken we were pretty much ignored won't be returning.

I highly recommend the food in this place, high quality and reasonable price. Staff were nice and welcoming too.

Been coming to Cafe Neon for a few year's now and the food and service is outstanding.

We went here on a Tuesday night for pre theatre food. It was lovely and cosy, staff very attentive and food very reasonable. Generous portions. I had the halloumi and tsatsviki starter, followed by chicken skewers. My partner had beef stifado. Everything was delicious, would definitely return!

Stunning little restaurant, highly recommended. The staff were universally cheerful and professional. The atmosphere was good, if a little chilled, probably due to it being a Sunday lunchtime. The food was sublime, I'm a keen cook and highly critical when I eat out, but I couldn't find a single thing to mark down. Well done to the team, great success!

We had dinner here on Thursday 31st Oct 2024. This restaurant had been recommended to us, and it didn't disappoint. One of us had the 2-courses for £15.95, and the other 3 small dishes for £15. The food was very good, and the portions were much bigger than expected ... we struggled to eat it all. At these prices it was definitely value for money. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. I'd definitely go back for a meal next time we're in the area.

This was my second visit as I was so impressed the first time! Great food with options for a vegetarian, carnivore and picky teen. Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere.

This was my first visit to Kafeneon and I believe it has been open for some 20 years or so? I was very impressed. Very attentive staff, a good vegetarian menu, good portion sizes and the food was excellent. Very busy so therefore it's a popular place. I thoroughly recommend. I can see why it is popular and I will visit again!

One of my favourite restaurants in the North East. Went with some friends from the West Country who were staying with us. Had a great time but recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment. 👍👍👍

Really enjoyed our meal here, was in Newcastle visiting my daughter at university and she had heard great things, we weren’t disappointed. The staff was all so friendly and fun and the food was of a high standard at reasonable prices, we benefited from a happy hour menu which we highly recommend for value! The wine also didn’t disappoint. Will definitely visit again.

The food is tip top notch, as good as you can ask for. Great value. The two waitresses serving were extremely friendly and always looking after the diners, as tasty as the food!

Super restaurant serving, in my opinion, truly authentic tasting dishes. As a British ex-resident of Athens I can say that if you’re looking to taste Greek food you won’t do better than this.

We were greeted well and shown to a table downstairs. It was very hot a humid downstairs so I asked if there was any ventilation. They kindly moved us to a ground level table that was much more pleasant. The food was delicious, very well cooked, good portions and very tasty. The whole experience was let down by the poor service. The female servers just weren’t interested at all. One in particular looked surly and as if she’d rather be anywhere else. We had barely sat down before someone was over asking for a drinks order - we had barely looked at the menu. Once she prised that out of us she asked for a food order - I had to point out we had been sat down for less than 10 seconds so we’re not ready. When they did take the food order it was not a friendly interaction, barely any acknowledgement at all. After the meal we were given dessert menus - and then just left. We had to ask to put an order in. Overall the service really spoiled the experience. All of us commented that the guy hosting was nice enough, but the rest of the servers were unfriendly, didn’t want to be there and it showed. I don’t think we would return. Which is a shame as the food was lovely. The kitchen is being let down by front of house.

I don't always give five stars but this was worth it. Excellent food, service warm, helpful and efficient, portions generous as well as delicious. We had feta, olives, chillis and spanokopita with tatziki starters, then chicken sizzler (with feta, peppers, tomatoes sauce) and moussaka. Both tasty, fresh, and very generous portions. So we didn't really need the starters, but hey, they were lovely so we managed to stuff it all in all the same! Yum. The young staff were very warm and helpful and brought us everything we needed, in spite of being very busy on Saturday night.

Loved this place! Booked on a recent one-off visit to Newcastle and it was the perfect place. I've rarely met a more dynamic, gregarious team of waiting staff, who made us feel really welcome. The food is fantastic (large portions too so pace yourself...) and there's a generally very nice vibe about the place. Would come back for sure!

Visited here today for the first time in quite a long time, with my mother and cousin. My cousin and I both ordered the big fat greek gyros, and my mother ordered the lamb kleftiko. For dessert, we shared the greek orange cake and neon ice cream sundae between us. Honestly, this is the best Greek food I have had outside of Greece, I couldn't point out a single fault, and I will hopefully be back soon.

Nice place. We strongly recommend Maze Platter’s! Don’t need to pick specific menu and you can try best menus in this restaurant.

This is the closest to proper authentic Greek food I've found in the UK! Absolutely incredible with proper Greek portions 👍🏼 Lovely staff and the toilets were spotless. Next time we are in Newcastle, this is the first place we will visit 👌🏼

Don't be put off by first impressions when you look through the door. The decoration upstairs really makes you feel like you are in greece. We popped in on a Friday evening, but sadly were sat with a large group in a small upstairs room. They were so loud it spoilt our experience. However, we would definitely come back as the food and service was great.

Great food and atmosphere let down by uninterested staff. Table for two at just after 7 on a really quiet night in Newcastle you'd think our custom would have been extremely welcome. The chap that showed us to our table was lovely and friendly as always but the female staff last night really let the restaurant down. The girl who'd been asked to deliver our waters practically threw them down then stormed off without saying a thing as if they were empties being put on the bar. When we left, the three female members of staff barely even acknowledged our existence as we thanked them all for having us, one said thanks (angsty water deliverer) and the other two were more interested in chatting on and barely grunted at us as we left. Possibly a one off occasion as the staff are normally very attentive and friendly. Hope to visit again but really hoping the service improves.

A lovely greek restaurant located in centre of Newcastle, offers a wide range of traditional dishes at more than reasonable prices! We ordered the meze which was amazing! Included a tasting of their most popular dishes, moussaka, chicken skewer, gyros, beef casserole and greek salad. Overall would recommend for lunch or evening! Really friendly staff and amazing food! One negative thing would be the cost of the drinks compared to other places.

I've been here twice now and have had a lovely experience both times. Staff are super friendly. We had the vegetarian mezze platter for two which was fantastic, but huge for two people in my opinion! Great selection of options and it's a good choice if you want to try a few bits of lots of things! Looking forward to going again soon.

Gem of a restaurant. We managed to eat outside with the sun shining. Food fresh and tasty. Service with a smile, no complaints. We took advantage of the 2 courses for £15 bargain. The only issue was I needed a snooze afterwards. I was so full 😂. Would recommend 👌

I had moussaka, it was ok, not great. But the staff was very friendly, I’ll gladly come back and try other food.

I have been coming to this restaurant for years and was always my number 1 when out for a meal. Unfortunately we attended this week for my birthday and we all agreed the plates were much smaller the chips were much smaller and the price was more expensive. I have also spoke to friends and they say the same which is a shame. I understand the cost of living and the prices going up but I feel that prices up and portions down aren't great. The staff are lovely and rhe restaurant feels like you are in Greece. I just think it's a shame.....I also opted for just salad no chips and the salad was the same size as my family and they also got chips, you would have thought having paid the same price I would have got at least a larger portion.

I recently dined at Kafeneon in their outdoor dining space and had an absolutely fantastic experience! From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming and attentive, making us feel right at home. What really stood out was how effortlessly they accommodated my dietary requirements. As someone with specific dietary needs, I often find it challenging to dine out, but Kafeneon have a dedicated gluten-free menu and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. The service was impeccable—attentive without being intrusive, and the staff had such a fun and positive energy that it really added to the overall experience. It’s rare to find a place that combines great food with such exceptional service. If you’re looking for a restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food without worrying about dietary restrictions, all while being treated like a valued guest, Kafeneon is the place to go. Highly recommend!

Food is absolutely amazing, been to Greece a few times and this is just as good but the chips are nicer! Staff is always brilliant. Couldn't fault the place give it a go!

Always eat here at least once when in Newcastle, this time it was twice and the food never disappoints - extremely tasty and the staff are great - spoiling me with a large slice of chocolate cake with a candle and birthday message on the plate, Helpings are so generous I can never finish my meal.

Busy early Tuesday evening, but we landed an outside table with only a couple of minutes wait. The online booking system was quite unhelpful, but fortunately, we got to experience this fabulous Greek restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. Excellent food and service and a very relaxed meal in a nicely warm August evening. All well supported by a bottle of Orthello... a lovely Greek Cypriot red wine.

The variety on the menu catered well to different tastes, and the prices were reasonable, offering good value for money. Service: 4/5 The service was generally commendable. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, ensuring our dining experience was pleasant. However, a slight hiccup occurred with the special occasion. I had mentioned in our booking that it was my partner’s 30th birthday, but there was no acknowledgment or any form of celebration, despite the restaurant’s website suggesting they do something special for such occasions. This oversight was a bit disappointing. Atmosphere: 2/5 Unfortunately, the atmosphere was the restaurant’s weak point during our visit. We were seated downstairs next to three extremely loud groups. The acoustics in the room amplified their noise, making it not only difficult to converse but also uncomfortable at times due to the unbearable volume. While the restaurant itself wasn’t directly at fault for the guests’ behaviour, it would have been appreciated if staff had acknowledged the issue or perhaps offered a different seating arrangement given the circumstances. Overall: 4/5 Despite the noise issues and the missed birthday acknowledgment, Kafeneon offers a fantastic culinary experience with its delicious food and fair pricing. It’s a great spot for enjoying Greek cuisine, though it might be worth mentioning any special requests or seating preferences more emphatically during booking to ensure a more pleasant dining experience.

The hummus starter is a must. The bread is fantastic.

Great value Greek meal in Newcastle, eating outdoors on a sunny summer's night. The restaurant service was absolutely impeccable and the portions huge. The menu didn't have calamari but had everything else - the two course set menu at £16 is an absolute bargain.

Delicious Greek food. The servings are a good size and the food is cooked perfectly. Great atmosphere (especially downstairs). Quick service and friendly staff. Prices are pretty reasonable too.

Great food with generous portions, helpful funny and polite staff, it was lovely to sit in the outdoor seating on a warm day (plenty of indoor seating available). I would find it helpful if the receipt listed 2-course special next to the price for that, but maybe I just can't add up properly. Has a good vibe in this spot.

Thoroughly recommend Kafeneon as a great all rounder for food and service. Healthy portions and great value - I usually go for the lamb Kleftiko but tried a Meze for two to share with a friend which was just as delicious. Cannot rate this restaurant highly enough...!

Really delicious chicken , authentic and clean food The waiter was so nice and funny We really enjoyed our meal. Just one comment to the restaurant, the chips has ALOT of oil and not crunchy, you might look into that. Highly recommended 👌

Such a great culinary experience! I had the Pork Soulziki (sorry if it's the wrong spelling). It was super tasty and I'll definitely come back. The service was great too and the waiter who looked after us was very nice. 10/10
