Jumbo's in South Lakeland

Yes don’t be put off by negative reviews. The best Thai green curry I have ever had .lots of meat and plenty of veg and pineapple with it . Hubby had chowcmein with extra noodles well worth every penny . Dont blame them not taking credit cards.

We weren’t sure when reading the varied reviews but we were not disappointed. The prawn toast was the best I’ve ever tasted ( and I’m fussy). We shared a chicken chow mein and this was equally good. Perfect, juicy chicken and tasty sauce. If we lived in this area we would be going back regularly.

We chose the set meal for two and, quite honestly, there was at least enough for three or maybe four. The beef with mushrooms, sweet and sour chicken and the rice were all good a very tasty. However the barbecue ribs had been cremated which was a bit of a let down but I doubt whether I could have managed them as due to the quantities of the other dishes. I will go back when I’m in the area but will choose individual dishes to avoid waste.

I'm a local, and. Being Honest, it depends what dish you receive depending who is cooking on that day ... I know the owner and have talked to him about this and he said thank you and would look into it. But , if you're not from round here, you wouldn't know which day is the best to order from here .. unless you ask if pong is cooking?

The duck was very nice, two legs only gave me a bit though. Two tail wags.. I had to have a lie down after the wine though

Always think there’s something dodgy about a business that doesn’t accept cards, especially when it’s not mentioned in the menu. However, the menu does state “all photos are for illustration only “ Which is just as well, as the insipid stuff we got looked (and tasted) revolting. Just goes to prove, always check the reviews first 😩

Shocking. Full of onion, satay sauce like water, overcooked meet , this place is a joke. You are better going hungry. Its also cash only. I know this is in the countryside but seriously this is one of the worst I have eaten. Total waste of money

Ordered chicken curry portion of fried rice. Very poor, tastless, was ready within 5 minutes of me ordering. I took a mouthful and threw it away. Was awful, won't be going here again. Complete waste of money

Always comes up trumps this place. Pleasant service, good food choices and freshly made. One of our go to places in milnethorpe and deserves to continue to do well. Keep it up.

Never Again! We visited here while staying near by. Big mistake, the food was terrible. We got several vegetarian dishes and each one was beyond bland. The sweet and sour had no taste whatsoever, the sauce was like water. There was hardly any vegtables in the dishes. The rice was tasteless. Strongly advise not to eat here.

1* review as can't give 0*. Had a house special chow mein with a side order of the worst food poisoning. I have never been so ill. Never, ever again.

Wish I had read the reviews first. Managed to get soup course correct which was very good but then went downhill. Order completely wrong. Ordered Kung Po chicken x 1 and Scezhuan chicken x 1. Thought £23 was expensive. When we got home 20 minutes drive we had paid for kung po x 2 and the other dish was a chicken curry!! NOT IMPRESSED will not be returning

So I ordered "Crispy Hot Spicy King Prawn" . When I got it home , yet again they had got the order wrong, this has become annoying and I will not take a chance again. I got some sort of prawn dish the prawns were not battered, and to be honest it was really poor. They were definitely not King prawns , and were really very hard. A complete waste of over £12 , not to mention my time. I am still hungry because I could eat it . NEVER EVER AGAIN AND I ADVISE OTHER PEOPLE NOT TO GO

Yet again Jumbo have managed to get one order for two dishes wrong. Surpassed themselves tonight by providing PORK (unedible pork by the looks of the fat on it it too) for a VEGETARIAN dish. When they get it right the food is good here but unfortunately they get orders wrong more times than they get it right. Fed up now and not sure its worth the hassle.

I’ve been here a few times now and it’s the best takeaway in my area I’ll will go there again and they are really quick to get the food out

Had a fabulous takeaway last night from here first time we have been. Very fresh and light ( not heavy sauces). And excellent value. Will definitely use again.

I’ve gave this Chinese the benefit of the doubt 4 times now. I tried something different each time to see if it was just my choice of meal. It is by far the worst Chinese I’ve ever tried. Watery curry’s, soggy chips, tasteless food. Not even hot food. Pineapple in a Thai green curry?????

Yet another fantastic meal. So tasty & fresh never wake up thirsty the next morning. Highly recommended.

Now the at least fourth time we have not got what we ordered..be aware as it's impossible to check at the shop.. food is decent for price.. but don't expect to be able to enjoy what you actually wanted...Doubt we will risk it again.. trouble is there is no local competition so to they get away with it...

Had a Chinese takeaway. Rang to order, ready when arrived. Food was not hot and needed microwaving but was very nice. Cash only still which was a pain to be honest and during these covid times we should avoid cash I think. Special fried rice had a load of gravy poured on top which I thought very odd but tasted good.

We have eaten from here many times during our breaks away and this has become a firm favourite of my children. The egg fried rice is amazing. I enjoyed the King Prawn Satay and my partner the Chicken with mushrooms. The chips leave a hell of a lot to be desired (hard and burnt) but not as bad when you put sauce of them I suppose. Bit criminal to serve them though. Nonetheless, time from order to collection is less than 10 minutes and don't know how they do it, but it is always lovely (bar the chips).

We visited here tonight and all I can say is the food was awful £31 I wish I hadn't spent to start with we had chicken and sweetcorn soup who puts carrots and peas in chicken and sweetcorn Soup? Mains special chow main, meat well whats that? it was awful fatty and bland. husband order special satay watery no flavour and meat was fatty we ate hardly any of it, if we wasnt on a caravan site with no sign I would be on the phone complaining never order from here

Counter staff (the twins) always friendly and efficient, meals tasty and always ready to collect when a time is given.

Jumbo's has been a rite of passage for the boarding students in this area, myself included. Although the prices have definitely gone up over the years, the food is a consistent comfort against the stresses of due dates and unpalatable school food. If I ever come back to this corner of the world, this is my first stop.___________Be aware that they only accept cash (at the time of this review) and don't offer in-house dining.

Stopped here on our way home from the zoo. It was really busy, but good fast service and reasonably priced. The food was nothing to write home about, but it was hot and plentiful, and tasty enough. Did the job :-)

My partner and I are very fond of Chinese food, we have tried several places in and near Kendal and this one is the best out of them. the service is always fast and the staff are helpful and friendly.

we used this takeaway last night - a little disconcerting as we were waiting for our order and a customer came in and told the 2 young girls taking orders that the food was disgusting and they had thrown it away .... so not a great start ! ,,They didnt know how to deal with it - and just let him go - so not good really ..The food was OK ... but not great .. the rice dish and the beef dish was ok - the sour and sour chicken was highly coloured and the sauce a bit weak. We didnt eat it all despite being very hungry - so quite a bit was left. The service was quick and the order was right. Not sure we would rush back as value for money re eating it all wasnt worth it. Its a shame as it would be a regular - but i dont think it will be somehow.

Whilst the food is good, twice in a row the order was wrong. Second time a dish was missing, we have a ten mile round trip which we explained. There response after politely complaining and explaining the journey length, have a free bag of chips, so that was 20 miles to get a takeaway intotal!! They really didn't care, it's a shame.

By far the best chinese takeaway in the area. Centrally located in Milnethorpe with parking outside. The bbq ribs and yeung chau chow fan with chilli always go down well. Singapore noodles also nice. Good portions and fast service. The menu is vast and other asian cuisines catered for. Note, rice and chips is additional to main dishes. Oh lastly, chips and gravy/curry sauce is fab also.

No need to travel any further than Milnthorpe for an excellent Chinese take away Jumbo in the village square is excellent value and above all superb food. Extensive menu at realistic prices just wish they'd do more Thai. Very clean which builds confidence. Unfortunately don't do deliveries However that's just a minor set back.

Regular customer, usually get a similar range of meals, but tonight the two meals we had were very poor and bland.Phoned them to inform them and said they would give us 2 more meals as a replacement but we had both had a drink by then so could drive back. Apparently they have a new chef! Not as good as it used to be.

I love Chinese food, the quality here is good although the dishes are a little on the pricer side, there are limiting options such as they don't serve dim sum or chicken satay but they make up for it in the flavour. As being the only Chinese in the area would recommend.

First visit but we will be back. Great menu, apart from no sweet & sour chicken balls, good sized portions all fresh & tasty!

This is a takeaway so we drove a couple of miles from where we were staying, parked and entered the door. It was VERY busy and, people were queuing outside as well so I'd consider that an indication of success. We ordered a set meal for two people at £21.

Having visited Jumbo for many years on regular caravan holidays in the area, tonight’s offering was extremely poor, in fact most went in the bin - the first time ever! All the meals we ordered were tasteless and 2 vegetarian meal had a distinct taste of fish. Very disappointing and I doubt if we’ll be back.

There is a good menu selection, We chose chicken with ginger and rice with extra chips. Very reasonably priced menu for the area. Pleasant and helpful staff. Certainly will go there again when we are in the area

Ordered for a large group of 15 people, everyone wanting something different, order spot on. Piping hot when we had driven it back to Westmorland Showground. Food was delicious, will definitely use again. One of our group telephoned with our feedback and thanks. Excellent take away; highly recommended.

We’ve had meals from Jumbo’s before and all good. Tonight three meals were lacking in flavour. Disappointing.

So I just phoned to see if a vegetarian dish would be suitable for a vegan too, I am aware this is not always possible to be told no mam it contains chicken or fish stock..... so I said then its not vegetarian and you cant sell it as. So just an info really if your vegetarian Jumbos food is not :(

Went for a takeaway Wednesday evening wasn’t too busy. Ordered and waited for order to be made, didn’t take long at all. Didn’t think much of this, always was quite quick.

have been here a few times over the years and the take-away food has always been of a good standard. Last went a short while ago as it is near where we live and is convenient to ring and collect food. Had beef and prawn curries which were very nice and tasty. Rice is charged extra ,whereas in Liverpool take-aways it is included,making it a little more expensive.

Jumbo is a good Chinese take away, not the best by a long shot but definitely not the worst. The food was nice and hot, well flavoured and seemed fresh, but some of the portion sizes were a little on the small side. It gets a 4 as it has always been consistently good, But never great .

A normal Chinese takeaway with everything you expect from any Chinese takeaway, all the dishes, all the M.S.G very tastie but you are hungry after r one hour!

I'm sorry but I've eaten some great food in milnthorpe and the surrounding area and this place is like a bad Chinese a home. Food was tasteless prepared in under five minutes and expensive. Poor.

My favourite takeaway ,Sweet sour king prawns ,fried rice ,my favourite.Served promptly but can get busy .You can order over phone and arrange to pick up when you want.Good menu varied meals .Never been disappointed with anything ive ordered .

Been coming here for 5 years, and really sorry to say not as good as it was.

We called on way to Arnside. BBQ ribs were good but salt and pepper chicken wings weren't wings at all just small blocks of chicken. Duck was not crispy. Sauce with duck was good. Chicken satay and rice was passable. Over all average so wouldn't rush back.

The food lovely and plenty of it we will definitely be returning for another take away when we camp again not badly priced as well it gets very busy but great food so you don't mind the wait x

We got a takeaway from here last week as we were going away for a week and like to save on washing up before we go etc. The food was good again, the two slight complaints are that like a lot of take away's they make your order too early and it sits there going cold when you get there on time for your collection, the other is that they put the salt and chilli chips in a sealed plastic container which makes them soggy but other than that, it is well worth a visit.

The food was freshly cooked and very tasty. It was ready for pickup at the time stated. Recommend telephone order.

Had chips and gravy. Way overpriced and absolutely disgusting. Chips are worse than a kebab shop. Undercooked and overcooked. Gravy awful. Worst chippy I have ever been to.

We have been enjoying meals from Jumbo's ever since it opened in Milnthorpe. 20 years ago? We always treat ourselves when returning from holiday or some other excuse not to cook but not too often. The meals are always delicious, our favourite is the special mixed curry where you get lots of interesting meats. It is hard to resist going more often but I enjoy cooking myself but I can't beat Jumbo''s.

We are very lucky in this area for having such good food outlets. As my other review about the Indian alternative Jumbo's is a brilliantly tasty Chinese takeaway. They also do a very good Thai version which is worth a try. Book your meal early on a weekend as it is soo popular

Excellent food from this place ,,, some of my family live in milnthorpe and often go through for tea. This Chinese is really really good far better than anything on offer from Kendal. Keep up the good work.

jumbos is a friendly Chinese place were they serve scrumpy food for low prices it is nice and normally quiet with a small TV in the corner

A weekly treat for my husband I would like to say he is going through the menu but usually chooses the young foo fried rice one of his favorites, you don't have to waite long if you just pop in or They take telephone orders

Milnthorpe used to have two Chinese take aways; Jumbo's and Canton Chef and locals were fiercely loyal to their preferred restaurant. I confess I was always favoured Canton Chef and gave it a five star review, but sadly it closed last year. Since then, in my opinion, Jumbo has substantially raised its game, improving greatly, and the quality of its take away meals cannot now be surpassed in this area. Better still my favourite Phad Phirk meals are now available and cooked to perfection. Canton Chef's demise was a shock, but Jumbo has risen to the occasion and will not disappoint.

Unfortunately as is the case many times over this takeaway has passed its best. Many dishes are starting to taste like all the others, must be using the same base sauce. Ribs are chewy etc not too good really unless you've just come out of the pub!

Wasn't sure about using an out of town takeaway but glad we did. Food was excellent. Better than some city centre Chinese takeaways. Note they don't accept cards. Cash only. There is a cash point 50 yards away though.

I've used Jumbo for years and never been disappointed. It's fair to say that if you want a Chinese Takeaway there is not much choice in the area ... But you don't need anything more than Jumbo. Fast, friendly service and a great choice. Enjoy!

Went to Jumbo's for the first time the other evening. The lady was very polite and helpful in assisting me in ordering my dinner. However, when I got the takeaway home I was extremely disappointed not only did it look awful it was completely tasteless....unfortunately I will not return.

The food is always fantastic here, we just phone our order through and go and collect it. Its always a busy place, but you don't usually have to wait very long. I love the crispy seaweed and the chicken in lemon sauce with fried rice.

My mum and dad have been going here since I was born (I'm 21) and I've been going since I passed my driving test! We love the Jumbo! Jumbo is always delicious food, reasonably priced with friendly staff what more do you want? Please put BBQ sauce on your menu though!

Me and my partener absolutely love Jumbo. After a full day we don't always feel like cooking so we just pick up the phone, place the order and in less then half hour we have a great meal. Food is always delicious, we tried most of the meals they have on the menu. Personally, I recommend chicken curry with egg fried rice. One of the best things I ever tasted. Also, staff is really nice.

Called for a change had the set buffet for 2 usually have a varied change this was even better great couldn't fault any of it the beef was well just broke up sweet & sour and the special rice awesome thanks will continue keep up the good work

It feels like I have been here a million times, to compensate very bad school food. It was never disappointing, very quick and cheap. It is probably not the most healthy option, however I can strongly recommend it. Especially the combination of chicken fried rice and mini spring rolls.

We tried this takeaway as it has great reviews. The shop was very busy, in fact bustling. Very clean shop and polite and friendly staff despite being so hectic. The food was very nice but just what you would expect. We will go again, but would order in advance as it was quite a long wait. Fairly priced and regular portion sizes.

Well having tried Jumbo a few times now whilst passing through the village I can happily say it's always been good.The tests are always chicken fried rice, salt and pepper chicken then black bean. Jumbo serve the chicken on top of the rice after frying it off and it really works. Salty pepper crispy chicken as it should be and a great black bean sauce.

Really enjoyed a Chinese takeaway meal. Good flavours, good quality and well packed.I would reccommend this to anyone. Really busy which tells the whole story! Very helpful and friendly staff.

Have had a few takeaways from Jumbo, and the food quality is always very good. The place is reasonably priced and service relatively quick. I would like the to consider a home delivery option, but that would be the icing on the cake! Worth a visit for a takeaway.

I loved this take away for years it was always my family's go to place. Every visit was spot on.....until recently! The last three visits I have come away dissapointed, the food has been greasy, sloppy and lacking that delicious taste it once had. I have no idea why this take away has gone down hill; chef change? Ingredients change? But what ever has changed please change it back I miss that chinese.

This Chinese take away also encompasses some lovely Thai dishes also.Each has a healthy slant and isn't covered in oil , quite delicious.Would recommend the lemon chicken as has a sharp tangy sauce. Delicious.

Food nice every time I've eaten there. Sometimes they forget to put your rice in with the order so make sure you check it before you get home and end up eating Uncle Ben's boil in the bag

This is another place I eat at regularly and it is delicious how ever the service is nice but they can sometimes mix up orders which is under stable as they can get bus

This is our local takeaway, so have something about once a month. Consistently good food, there is a good choice and the prices are about the same as other takeaways.

usual great range of dishes full of flavour. i use this takeaway on a regular basis and the standard is always good. i find the best way to do it is to order before hand so you miss the long wait you may have when they are busy.

In all our years of eating Chinese food, we have only found two takeaways that have earned our personal five star ratings. One of them is Jumbo's in the quiet but wonderfully featured 'crossroads' of Milnthorpe; the other is Sheng's in Heysham, near Morecambe.Fabulous food, blisteringly fast service and flavours to die for. Treat yourself . . .

This is best ever Chinese around, and good value for money, you must try the hot spicy crispy chicken, it is to die for we go there every Friday night

Not normally a fan of Chinese food as (perhaps unfairly) think it's the poor neighbour of Thai & Vietnamese. So I'm basing the review on the missus (more of a Chinese fan), and she said it was one of the best Chinese takeaways she's had. It was good value and for about £20 I was stuffed!

A must if you like chinese food , the salt and pepper chips were very tasty , fast service, even on a saturday night

We have not been disappointed yet, A value for money tasty hot takeaway, will take telephone orders which is very handy as it gets very busy.

We started going to Jumbo a few years ago and have never returned to our 'old chinese' They are always quick and the food is always very good, only ever had one complaint and the rectified that our next visit without question.
