We ordered pork steamed buns, roasted pork with rice, and Vietnamese pork and shrimp egg rolls. The pork steamed buns were too soft and gooey. The pork was okay in my opinion, awful to my wife. The egg rolls were brought 10-15 minutes after the first two items, and were not very tasty and the outside was excessively chewy. A waste of L32. Should have tried a buffet down the road.

The food was good, but I ordered a duck noodle soup and they didn't bring it. We told him up to 3 times that the soup was missing. And finally he comes and tells us...the soup has been cancelled. And being an hour a little late I had to eat the remains of the others at the table because they didn't bring me my dinner. The worst thing of all is that they were so comfortable and laughed at me…. The service is unfortunate and the worst of all is that on top of that you have to pay the tip for a somewhat bad service.

I booked and dined in here yesterday, we were a party of 10 and I'm happy to say that JKL did not disappoint! It's always overwhelming knowing where in Chinatown to eat, with so many options that all appear more or less the same and all having quite low review ratings (less than 4 for almost all of them). With an expansive menu that would surely please all, I decided on JKL. After arriving 5-10 mins after our booking time, we did have to wait another 10-15 to be seated. We were given a lovely big round spinning table for 10 on the second floor, which was lovely and allowed for good chat round the table as well as easy access for food. The service was efficient, prompt and accurate, which is impressive for the number of items ordered. The dishes came as they were ready, which worked great for us. Upon request the bill also came swiftly. The staff were pleasant and helpful and one of the waitresses took a photo of the group which was really appreciated amongst the busy and hectic environment... they were full on all floors! The food was spot on and we enjoyed everything, I look forward to returning soon.

Tourist Trap! Since management has changed a couple of years ago, Joy King Lau has turned into a tourist trap. Food and service is below average. Prices are already high (around 15 GBP for a main dish), the main dishes dont even come with rice (you have to pay extra for it) and they charge an additional 12,5 % service fee on everything. They also try to make you order more and more additional items (for example their chinese tea or more food). Hygiene in the bathroom was bad as well.

This is one of the restaurants some of my old friends like to go for dim sums. I hadn’t gone for quite a while & was attracted by its promotion outside for lobsters. We went in & ordered a dish between the two of us. When it came we found the lobster pretty small. It was OK for two small eaters, but someone with bigger appetite might find it wanting. Noodle was not the smooth & soft ‘e-noodle’ we normally have with the dish. Instead it was the kind that was served with wantons which had a more stringy texture. We were told this was the case because of local clients preference. I must admit we weren’t totally convinced but didn’t pursue the issue further. All in all, the half price lobster noodle was OK, but not what I would call exciting or impressive. At half price it was fine, but I was not sure I would choose the crustacean dish if otherwise.

TERRIBLE Este restaurante merece cerrar.

We have eaten here a number of times and the service has always been good. Today however, we asked for a table on the ground floor which was confirmed. We waited 5-10 minutes for it be cleared and prepared when a senior male waiter came over and shouted for us to go upstairs. I told him we had a table already and he shouted ‘don’t you understand? Get upstairs’. I said we just wanted the table we’d been waiting for. He told me numerous times he was IN CHARGE and quickly became aggressive and intimidating. This went on and on. We then left the restaurant and had a lovely meal elsewhere where we weren’t screamed at. The rudest restaurant encounter I’ve ever had. We will not be visiting ever again.

2024 review (updated): very disappointed with our anniversary meal here. The food was awful - it used to be really good! Fatty bits of meat with gristle, dry starters and the sizzling dish arrived with not even a tiny sizzle and was very greasy. A minor point but I was also disappointed they didn't give us orange slices at the end of the meal like they used to. The service was ok though so I've given 2 stars overall rather than 1. 2019 review (original): The food was outstanding and service fast and efficient once we were seated. Overpriced & disappointing. The building is quite old, cluttered and not well kept. There was no atmosphere. But the restaurant was really busy and we had to wait over 30 minutes for a Table. The staff were so ignorant and dismissive. They avoided any eye contact, had no manners and just pointed at us. It took a further 30minutes to get our order in and drinks, as they were just swishing past us and ignoring any “excuse me” and indication we gave. At this point, if we hadn’t already been there for an hour and it wasn’t buy London, I really wanted to leave and give them the middle finger. The table cloth was dirty and they just laid a piece of paper on top to soak the sauces. The plates, bowls & cutlery was really old & used, to the point it was chipped & dangerous and the white colour had turned off blue-grey. The food finally arrived after a further 30minutes wait, the waiters just chucked it onto the table and just didn’t care. The food was ok, average at best, but the bill to over £60 for 1 main and 4 dim sums and tea. I’ve had better dim sum previously and they had the nerve to charge 10% service. The food wasn’t awful, but based on the customer service, the waiting experience, the state of the cutlery, I really would not recommend and wouldn’t come back if you paid me. I have been to this restaurant a few times and yesterday while in china town decided to go there. We arrived and we was seated on the ground floor which was good as I had my toddler with me. Everything was going fine as we settled one of the waiters came over with the menu and he had told us that after we place our order, we would have to pay. We was a bit confused as we have been to this restaurant before, and we have never had to pay before receiving our food. We thought this was unusual and called the waiter back and asked him why he said that his manager told him so we asked for the manager while waiting for the manager. We asked the couple next to our table if they had paid for their meal. They was mid meal and they said no they had not yet paid. This confirmed our suspicions that they had not liked the look of us and thought we was possibly going to do a runner. I can assure you that we had no intention of doing so and we question the manager as to why and he just repeated- Yes you have to pay. I’m sure he felt embarrassed however I decided not to give them any money and we managed to find a beautiful restaurant, just around the corner from them. That in itself already proves that the service is horribly lousy because of how crude he was. We were taken aback but did not want to cause a scene and just let it be. Aren’t we allowed to remove the ‘discretionary’ amount as customers because as it says it’s optional and to top it off the discretionary amount was not stated on the bill. He clearly didn’t deserve the service charge and is forcing customers to pay for bad service! Extremely bad service!

Update : 12.03.24 Felt I needed to refresh my review . I’m mystified by the recent bad reviews as I’ve been coming here for since I was a little kid . Had lunch today and it was delicious , service was fine . As for the prices , personally I don’t think they are particularly high . I don’t know where you are going to get good dim sum significantly cheaper in central London . And if you compare the price & quality to the shockingly poor Dim T or Ping Pong there’s really nothing to say . Perhaps if people want a more bougie experience then I’d suggest you head to the mediocre & expensive Din Tai Fung - it may be good n’ cheap in Taiwan but it certainly isn’t here ( or in LA for that matter ) . This isn’t my absolute favourite it’s a tie between Dim Sum Duck & Royal China Club .But that doesn’t justify hating on Joy King Lau , I’m just so happy that it’s still there and is solid as ever ! 2nd Update : 18.03.24 Went back for lunch on Saturday with two friends who’ve never been before . What can I say ? It was delicious as it’s ever been . From Har Gau to Xiao long Bao to Scallop Cheung Fun it’s all good . We had a good amount of food and with service it was under £80 how is that expensive for three adults ? They really liked it too , and judging from the packed restaurant everyone else looked to me to be enjoying their food so I would really take those one star reviews with a hefty pinch of salt . I think it’s fair enough to moan about the price ( it has increased but what hasn’t , I eat out regularly but I’m not blaming the business owners for hiking up prices - if you know anything about the restaurant industry and the very real existential challenges they’re facing right now you will know why London is chock full of chain restaurants - they’re only the ones who can afford the ridiculous rents ( Westminster is one of the worst for this ) and crazy business rates not to mention the staffing issues . Ok going off on a tangent now , also regarding service . Are people seriously mad because no one is making you feel like special when you enter the restaurant , I mean have you ever been to Hong Kong ? This is a Cantonese restaurant ! No one here is going to introduce themselves to you , or ask you how your day went & then get down on their haunches and counsel you through your order . I personally cannot bear that kind of pandering - you don’t need to pretend to be interested in me just take my order and bring the food ! Anything else is superfluous . All I want to say is that this is a good Chinese restaurant , with good dim sum and 1 star review for this place is not only petty , but downright spiteful and unnecessary .

We went to this restaurant, because we looked for good dim sum in Chinatown on TikTok. The employees weren’t friendly. They didn’t greet us or even talked to us. We were offered tea that came in a dirty can and tasted like water, we were charged 4£ for that. The menu was ok, but we were disappointed of the dim sum options. We ordered some dumplings and duck with rice. The dim sum we’re ok but nothing great. The duck was very disappointing! The “meat” consisted of just bones, skin and fat and was very tough. While eating the staff watched us and we felt very uncomfortable. We won’t come here and would recommend to look for another restaurant in Chinatown.

Quite good food but frankly very overpriced for a basic 2 mains, 2 rice 1 starter and 2 drinks. A not so cool 80 quid. They even charged us £1 plus service for a takeaway plastic carton to take home a few leftovers which seems ridiculous! Won't be going back.....

I returned with my girlfriend to this restaurant after not going for 10 years. I had a nice memory that was completely destroyed and here's why: The food is bad, of poor quality and of dubious origin. (there were insects in our duck) I had intestinal problems for 3 days but I had to return to Italy. If I had stayed there I would definitely have gone to report the owner. The staff is terrible, they do everything to be rude and rude. We ordered Cantonese duck, rice corn soup and dumplings. One worse than the other. Finally, the absurd price, the dishes I listed plus a beer are £75, a steal! it is clear that this dilapidated, dirty and poorly maintained place only continues thanks to naive tourists, being 2 steps away from Leister square. The worst Chinese restaurant of my life. Horrible experience, absolutely to be avoided.

It is recommended not to visit on weekends. The tone and attitude of the waiter are simply trying to drive away customers. You can only place an order in one round, and you are not allowed to place additional orders. Ask the shop assistant for soy sauce and chee cheong fun, and he will insist on arguing with you about ordering the sweet sauce that comes with the dish. 😑 The food is good but not outstanding. The main reason is that the attitude of the store clerk will make you feel uncomfortable paying for it, as if you owe them something. No next time.

I haven’t eaten in every single restaurant in Chinatown, but I have been to quite a few and there are PLENTY of better options than this place. The service left much to be desired, we asked for glasses for our drinks multiple times and they never came. The attitude is also impatient and very dismissive. The food itself was terrible, chewy, and just not very tasty. It is also WAY overpriced for both the quality and the portions. £8.5 for a small soup, £15.5 for 6 dumplings….etc. Just overall would not recommend. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.

We have been coming to this restaurant, specialized in dim-sum and Cantonese cuisine, a few times, we have always loved the food, the deco is a bit dated and the service was ok but last time we went there we were waited on by Tsinghua Wang and that made all the difference as she was attentive and welcoming, offering customer service at its finest that ultimately resulting in a very pleasant dinner. The food here is really good, I can read that some people are talking about the portions' size, I do not know what they order but I can assure you that some portions are massive. We will be coming back again soon and we hope that Tsinghua will be there when we come.

Almost hostile smileless staff. My friend said that staff was staring at her and me eating behind my back with unfriendly faces. Duck soup had duck pieces with sharp bones (almost cut my gums!) and meat was rubbery. Noodles were clearly not fresh. Shrimps were cooked from frozen and soaking oil. The only okay thing were duck rolls but they did not look handmade. Toilets were disgusting. Prices are horrible for that quality. I would advise to throw money into Thames rather than spending it here.

All the reasons why I had a very bad experience, why I would never go there and caution anybody considering going there 1. Very rude response from all the staff expect for one new recruit, the new recruit was very humble, but even if he came to serve us, he was overpowered by the other staff whom I am assuming that they work there, because after I had a bad experience at this place, I read many reviews and everybody said that the customer experience is bad 2. There is this rule with dumpling which I found to be very weird, in the very first go you have to order as many dumpling dishes as you want, if you taste something and like it, you cannot order more after that. (what is the point in running a place where a customer likes something you make but you do not serve it?) 3. Because of point number 2 we ordered 6 different dumpling dishes, of which 2 of them were never served to us because they forgot. We were waiting for the 2 dishes thinking it is in the making, but throughout our wait time, we were treated as if they were letting us sit on the table like they were giving us shelter for charity, while the 2 rude staff kept asking us why we were not eating anything, we said that we were waiting for those dishes. Yet it never arrived. 4.Because we thought that the kitchen was very busy and it might take time, we went ahead and ordered a main course. The main course arrived but the 2 dumpling dishes did not arrive. We ordered another main course, and the dumplings came along with the main course. All this while we were being treated like we were wasting their time, but it was them who were wasting our time. 5. When we told them that the 2 dumpling dishes arrived late, the rude staff literally asked "Do you want it or not?". We were being treated like we made mistake in ordering the dishes, while it was actually them who wasted our time and treated like they were doing us charity. 6. Topping all of this, there was the gratuity bill along with the bill. Gratuity for being treated like I was receiving charity food from them. Neither is the taste of the food, nor the portion size was worth enduring the rude treatment from the staff. Ended up walking out of the place feeling miserable.

We arrived 5 minutes before closing time and were offered the card, which we gladly accepted. Unfortunately, the menu was thrown on the table and after we ordered, someone was always standing behind us to check whether we were ready. After 3 spoons we were interrupted while eating and had to pay the bill. After my plate was empty and I wanted to go to the toilet, I was almost run over by the waitress who wanted to put my plate away. Constant angry looks, panting and looking at the clock. After we paid a whopping 67 euros for 2 normal portions, we left with our drinks (which were still half full). Conclusion - it wasn't worth the money to be able to enjoy your food in such an unfriendly environment!

This is one of my favorite spots in Chinatown, London, and my husband and I just can’t stop coming back! If you’re craving Peking Duck, this is an absolute must-visit. The duck is incredibly flavorful and succulent, with a perfect balance of textures - crispy on the outside but soft and tender on the inside. I also love their dumplings The rich, savory flavors pair beautifully with the hoisin sauce and even better with their delicious dumplings. Their duck tongue is also good if you want to try sth new. It’s quite hard to get good customer service from China Town tbh, but we had no issues with this restaurant. They all seem friendly and attentive!
