Joy King Lau in City of London, Westminster

Came as a group of four for dinner on a Saturday night. Used to come here for dim sum prior to the change of ownership and refurb. Seems slightly more upmarket now. One person in our group didn’t eat fish or seafood and another was a pescatarian! Still, we ordered a fair selection of dishes which catered for both palettes. Perhaps a tad expensive (an average main was £18) but portions were generous and flavours were bold. I recommend the mixed seafood with Japanese tofu. Service was courteous and efficient.

Food was great really The service was quick and efficient too The only thing I would suggest is the wine by glass is dire . It's nice to have a decent glass of wine with such fabulous food

Dim sum dumplings overcooked and lacked flavour - decent prices but would recommend you try elsewhere with better homemade dumplings.

I just had my meal at the restaurant and am highly disappointed with how we were treated. We asked to remove the discretionary amount which was added to our bill as we were unhappy with the service and the man who gave us the bill said in a fierce and firm tone, ‘No!’. That in itself already proves that the service is horribly lousy because of how crude he was. We were taken aback but did not want to cause a scene and just let it be. Aren’t we allowed to remove the ‘discretionary’ amount as customers because as it says it’s optional and to top it off the discretionary amount was not stated on the bill. He clearly didn’t deserve the service charge and is forcing customers to pay for bad service! Extremely bad service!

This was the best Cantonese food I've had in England. It felt very authentic

Update : 12.03.24 Felt I needed to refresh my review . I’m mystified by the recent bad reviews as I’ve been coming here for since I was a little kid . Had lunch today and it was delicious , service was fine . As for the prices , personally I don’t think they are particularly high . I don’t know where you are going to get good dim sum significantly cheaper in central London . And if you compare the price & quality to the shockingly poor Dim T or Ping Pong there’s really nothing to say . Perhaps if people want a more bougie experience then I’d suggest you head to the mediocre & expensive Din Tai Fung - it may be good n’ cheap in Taiwan but it certainly isn’t here ( or in LA for that matter ) . This isn’t my absolute favourite it’s a tie between Dim Sum Duck & Royal China Club .But that doesn’t justify hating on Joy King Lau , I’m just so happy that it’s still there and is solid as ever ! 2nd Update : 18.03.24 Went back for lunch on Saturday with two friends who’ve never been before . What can I say ? It was delicious as it’s ever been . From Har Gau to Xiao long Bao to Scallop Cheung Fun it’s all good . We had a good amount of food and with service it was under £80 how is that expensive for three adults ? They really liked it too , and judging from the packed restaurant everyone else looked to me to be enjoying their food so I would really take those one star reviews with a hefty pinch of salt . I think it’s fair enough to moan about the price ( it has increased but what hasn’t , I eat out regularly but I’m not blaming the business owners for hiking up prices - if you know anything about the restaurant industry and the very real existential challenges they’re facing right now you will know why London is chock full of chain restaurants - they’re only the ones who can afford the ridiculous rents ( Westminster is one of the worst for this ) and crazy business rates not to mention the staffing issues . Ok going off on a tangent now , also regarding service . Are people seriously mad because no one is making you feel like special when you enter the restaurant , I mean have you ever been to Hong Kong ? This is a Cantonese restaurant ! No one here is going to introduce themselves to you , or ask you how your day went & then get down on their haunches and counsel you through your order . I personally cannot bear that kind of pandering - you don’t need to pretend to be interested in me just take my order and bring the food ! Anything else is superfluous . All I want to say is that this is a good Chinese restaurant , with good dim sum and 1 star review for this place is not only petty , but downright spiteful and unnecessary .

Great Chinese, plenty of room, nice staff, great food.

We went to this restaurant, because we looked for good dim sum in Chinatown on TikTok. The employees weren’t friendly. They didn’t greet us or even talked to us. We were offered tea that came in a dirty can and tasted like water, we were charged 4£ for that. The menu was ok, but we were disappointed of the dim sum options. We ordered some dumplings and duck with rice. The dim sum we’re ok but nothing great. The duck was very disappointing! The “meat” consisted of just bones, skin and fat and was very tough. While eating the staff watched us and we felt very uncomfortable. We won’t come here and would recommend to look for another restaurant in Chinatown.

Food portions have shrunk in size. Poor service. Avoid

Quite good food but frankly very overpriced for a basic 2 mains, 2 rice 1 starter and 2 drinks. A not so cool 80 quid. They even charged us £1 plus service for a takeaway plastic carton to take home a few leftovers which seems ridiculous! Won't be going back.....

I returned with my girlfriend to this restaurant after not going for 10 years. I had a nice memory that was completely destroyed and here's why: The food is bad, of poor quality and of dubious origin. (there were insects in our duck) I had intestinal problems for 3 days but I had to return to Italy. If I had stayed there I would definitely have gone to report the owner. The staff is terrible, they do everything to be rude and rude. We ordered Cantonese duck, rice corn soup and dumplings. One worse than the other. Finally, the absurd price, the dishes I listed plus a beer are £75, a steal! it is clear that this dilapidated, dirty and poorly maintained place only continues thanks to naive tourists, being 2 steps away from Leister square. The worst Chinese restaurant of my life. Horrible experience, absolutely to be avoided.

Overpriced & disappointing. The staff were really ignorant and dismissive. They avoided any eye contact, had no manners and definitely wouldn’t hurt to smile. The table cloth was dirty and they just laid a piece of paper on top to soak the sauces. The plates, bowls & cutlery was really used, to the point it was chipped and white had turned off blue-grey. The food was ok, but I’ve had better dim sum. Bill came to over £60 for two for lunch and they had the nerve to charge 10% service. The food wasn’t awful, but based on experience, the state of the cutlery, I would not recommend and wouldn’t come back if you paid me. Its called Joy King Lau for a reason, it really is a joking la!!!

Always went there for lunch, used to be a great place for dumplings, but this time somehow the food did not feel that awesome. It was still good but maybe it's time to try other places in china town.

Benn coming here for years, new management very poor. The food is ok, but miss the last owner, I think they do not deserve service charge. . Recommend not to come here.

It is recommended not to visit on weekends. The tone and attitude of the waiter are simply trying to drive away customers. You can only place an order in one round, and you are not allowed to place additional orders. Ask the shop assistant for soy sauce and chee cheong fun, and he will insist on arguing with you about ordering the sweet sauce that comes with the dish. 😑 The food is good but not outstanding. The main reason is that the attitude of the store clerk will make you feel uncomfortable paying for it, as if you owe them something. No next time.

I haven’t eaten in every single restaurant in Chinatown, but I have been to quite a few and there are PLENTY of better options than this place. The service left much to be desired, we asked for glasses for our drinks multiple times and they never came. The attitude is also impatient and very dismissive. The food itself was terrible, chewy, and just not very tasty. It is also WAY overpriced for both the quality and the portions. £8.5 for a small soup, £15.5 for 6 dumplings….etc. Just overall would not recommend. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.

We have been coming to this restaurant, specialized in dim-sum and Cantonese cuisine, a few times, we have always loved the food, the deco is a bit dated and the service was ok but last time we went there we were waited on by Tsinghua Wang and that made all the difference as she was attentive and welcoming, offering customer service at its finest that ultimately resulting in a very pleasant dinner. The food here is really good, I can read that some people are talking about the portions' size, I do not know what they order but I can assure you that some portions are massive. We will be coming back again soon and we hope that Tsinghua will be there when we come.

Almost hostile smileless staff. My friend said that staff was staring at her and me eating behind my back with unfriendly faces. Duck soup had duck pieces with sharp bones (almost cut my gums!) and meat was rubbery. Noodles were clearly not fresh. Shrimps were cooked from frozen and soaking oil. The only okay thing were duck rolls but they did not look handmade. Toilets were disgusting. Prices are horrible for that quality. I would advise to throw money into Thames rather than spending it here.

Just your bog standard Chinese, only that it’s in china town, I drove 1 hour & 16 mins based of the high views & amount… Absolutely not worth it 👎🏽

All the reasons why I had a very bad experience, why I would never go there and caution anybody considering going there 1. Very rude response from all the staff expect for one new recruit, the new recruit was very humble, but even if he came to serve us, he was overpowered by the other staff whom I am assuming that they work there, because after I had a bad experience at this place, I read many reviews and everybody said that the customer experience is bad 2. There is this rule with dumpling which I found to be very weird, in the very first go you have to order as many dumpling dishes as you want, if you taste something and like it, you cannot order more after that. (what is the point in running a place where a customer likes something you make but you do not serve it?) 3. Because of point number 2 we ordered 6 different dumpling dishes, of which 2 of them were never served to us because they forgot. We were waiting for the 2 dishes thinking it is in the making, but throughout our wait time, we were treated as if they were letting us sit on the table like they were giving us shelter for charity, while the 2 rude staff kept asking us why we were not eating anything, we said that we were waiting for those dishes. Yet it never arrived. 4.Because we thought that the kitchen was very busy and it might take time, we went ahead and ordered a main course. The main course arrived but the 2 dumpling dishes did not arrive. We ordered another main course, and the dumplings came along with the main course. All this while we were being treated like we were wasting their time, but it was them who were wasting our time. 5. When we told them that the 2 dumpling dishes arrived late, the rude staff literally asked "Do you want it or not?". We were being treated like we made mistake in ordering the dishes, while it was actually them who wasted our time and treated like they were doing us charity. 6. Topping all of this, there was the gratuity bill along with the bill. Gratuity for being treated like I was receiving charity food from them. Neither is the taste of the food, nor the portion size was worth enduring the rude treatment from the staff. Ended up walking out of the place feeling miserable.

Went there as heard a recommendation from Rory Stewart on the rest is politics podcast . the food was awful . Just could not eat it , bland , cold and greasy , not a great combination. Will stick to his political reviews - much better choice .

I have been going to this place for over 20 years. Decided to revisit again after the change of ownership. The restaurant feels a little strange with new staff and less decorative. But nonetheless, the traditional Cantonese dimsum quality was still up there. The staff are friendly and efficient. Will definitely try out their regular meals and see.

I’ve been coming here for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, now that it’s under new management I will definitely not be coming back. Very hesitance to go but gave it a try. The prices have gone up, the level of service was not the same and the dim sum was mediocre.

Totally enjoyed our yumcha at Joy King Lau. Visited Chinatown after several years and with a huge hankering for steaming yumcha, we headed directly to JKL. At the outset let me say despite reviews and common lore, the servers guided and smiled. Not too widely. But smiled. They lived up to our memories of deliciousness. We began by ticking off our choices on the paper menu, then sipping on warm tea, fidgeting with our chopsticks, bowls and Chinese soup spoons just waiting for those baskets piled high to come teetering in our direction. They did. And go! There was no stopping us. In between balancing prawn hargaos into mouths, cheung fans, baos, ribs, sui Mai all were eaten in almost reverent silence barring the mmm’s slurps and yummmms. My favourite was the soup dumpling - having broken the first one with my clumsiness, I gingerly scooped the second one into the spoon and let the light yet rich tasty broth flood the taste buds and with slight chewing after of the herbed minced pork it was all gone. Another favourite is the duck pork prawn in gluttonous rice steamed in a lotus leaf: a ceremonial unwrapping and then savouring morsels of gooey perfection. I could go on and on. Instead we’ll just plan and revisit. London winters need yumcha to thrive!!!

Classic local Chinese type restaurant. No pretensions and not fine dining. Friendly Chinese with a sizable menu. Food was simple and tasty. They even removed pineapple chunks for me given my preference which was something that counts. A small restaurant and a number of Chinese eating which is always a good sign.

It was my first time in a long time like in 13 or 15 years back going there. It felt a bit strange. Food quality was okay nothing special but lacked a bit of flavour. Dim sum was very nice tasty but the rest of the meals we ordered were somewhat pricey.

Went for dinner last night after going there for Dim Sum a month ago. Completely different experience. Dim Sum at lunchtime was excellent and good value; dinner in the evening poor and expensive. Food took ages to arrive and when it eventually arrived (after a chap who I think was the manager came up and told the staff the food was in the lift) was whisked into a microwave to be heated up again. Whilst we were waiting, one family basically walked out refusing to pay as the food was cold, and another family sitting beside us were saying they won’t return again. I certainly won’t be returning. Maybe for dim sum, but wouldn’t entertain the thought of going any other time. Sad, really.

Came here for my birthday dinner but was disappointed. I used to come here often. Food was served cold and late - we nearly finished the first 2 dishes before the other 2 arrived. Food was left on the counter without serving. Rice was overpriced - £4.5 per portion which was very small. Service was non existent, we had to ask for drinks and go up to counter asking for the bill. I won’t be coming back.

Food was good. Noticed i was charged twice for a dish (top and bottom of receipt), after which they said it was another line item. Double checked and it was not, and they removed it.

Customer service was absolutely awful they treated us with no respect at all.The food was ok but not amazing either.

The place has been sold and everything has changed. Food, prices and service are way different than before. I have been coming to this place for more than 10 years and is not good any more.

Was completely unimpressed with all of the dishes we ordered as a table of 6. None of them had the genuine flavours of Dim Sum. Will not be back.

After sitting down for 2 minutes and saying hi to our friends as we settled in, pleasantries were interrupted host and told off, verbatim she said "stop chatting and order now" because "there was a queue outside" (there was no one outside). Happy to have a bit of rudeness if food is good, but we left half of it as tasted like a terrible take away. I wish I had avoided, please go literally anywhere else in the neighbourhood, it's definitely better ;)

A really authentic and delicious dim sum restaurant with multilevel floors, intimate tables, and made-to-order dishes. The dim sum is fresh and tasty and the service is both brisk and accommodating. A shout-out to their rice crepes with beef, chicken claws, and congee—super fresh with the right level of filling, flavor, and proportions. Highly recommend this place for delicious, fresh dim sum!

Awful food, just really bad.Eggs fried rice was OK, but duck and pork was cold greasy and probably a few day old.

Stopped by for an early evening (circa 17.30) Saturday dinner and were lucky to get a table. Very good menu and quick service - the food was excellent, tasty and well cooked. When we left at around 19.00 there was a queue to get in so these guys are doing something right. Recommended

Amazing pre-match lunch here with family and best friends. Unbelievable selection of dim sum with the best Cheung Fun anywhere to be found, also have to recommend the turnip cake and glutenous rice. Just enough room for a 'dessert' of Dry fried beef ho fun. Rumours of its demise have been greatly over exaggerated!

One of the better Chinese restaurants in Soho, and close to Leicester Square. Charming staff, decent food and average pricing.

We have been coming to this restaurant when visiting London, a couple of times a year, for at least 10 years. The food was good but not as exceptional as usual but the problem was with the service and the staff both of which have declined badly. We had a long wait for our food, one bowl of rice was forgotten, was not asked if we would like our drinks replenished when empty, normally at the end of the meal in the past we would receive fresh orange slices and a hot cloth for our hands but not any more. Sadly this will be our last visit and will be looking for somewhere different to go in the future.

In London for the day and enjoyed a fine set meal, sitting outside in the wonderful sunshine. We both opted for set meal B and all courses were served speedily though without being rushed. Food was excellent washed down with a good bottle of Pinot Grigio. Would recommend if you are in or around Leicester Square/ china town

The food was OK but the service was shocking. We were stared at throughout our meal like we were being watched and yet still had to ask for more water or sauce even though they could see we'd run out. Because of the poor service we covered the bill and a little more and when the waiter realised we weren't going to cover the £11 "discretionary" tip he said we weren't paying enough to which we explained it's discretionary but also we were actually tipping some and he started to insult us and say we weren't welcome back again. I've never known anything like it. Plenty of options for Chinese food in China Town so just avoid this one!

The mystery behind the awful meal and turgid atmosphere is revealed - the restaurant has changed hands some time in 2022. What was one of the best spots in Chinatown is now a shockingly bad and overpriced.

Food: The food was the highlight of the place as everything we ordered was of very high quality and it was delicious and authentic. Service: The service was good overall, and we appreciated the fact we got a table for 8 when there was only three of us. There was a bit of confusion over the table that we had and the fact we were able to only order once on the paper can be a little bit complicated, but we do appreciate the prompt service. Atmosphere: The atmosphere was nice but the table was a bit wobbly. However, that being said, I always do have a wonderful time bringing my friends here It is a wonderful place for people to try dimsum and we will come again.

Excellent food and quick, efficient service

Probably the worst Asian restaurant I’ve been to. Chicken in dish obviously cooked some time ago- very sinewy. Beef in sizzling dish definitely not fillet. Toilet facilities below par. Not to be recommended or revisited. Did refuse to pay service charge-not asked why. Felt unable to complain because of staffs lack of interest and communication.

Came here because was told that this is one of the few left dimsum place that still use trolleys. But found that it's not the case anymore. Good quality food though compared to many places. Price is rather pricey though £££

Left in shock, I ordered stir fried seasonal vegetables with mushrooms and I had a bowl of broccoli and mushrooms!!! Worse part is it cost £17.50!! You can get a broccoli for £1. If I new this is what I was going to receive no way would I a, pay that and b, order it. Will never be going back, extremely overpriced and clearly lacking information on the menu to what you actually receive.

Mum's birthday - After some time spent reviewing Chinese restaurants we booked for adults and children. In short from arrival to leaving - Service/atmosphere and food was amazing. Portions were very generous and came hot and quickly with all dishes full of flavor and presented well. In short would highly recommend Joy King Lau and we will be back. A huge thank-you to Sue and her team for a great and memorable evening.

Gleich vorne weg, das Essen war hier gut und die Preise voll okay aber die Stimmung und Hektik im Restaurant etwas stimmungstrübend. Unsere dumplings wurden frisch serviert ,auch die Hauptspeise und die Beilagen haben uns gut geschmeckt aber mir hat es etwas an Ambiente und Herzlichkeit gefehlt.

Good food, Shame no Dim Sum after 5 Yes it's changed, menu is slightly different

Been coming here for over 25 years Recently had new owners. And we’re ok with the food being served with the new team. But feel terribly let down by the price increases being charged. We were there today 9/4/2023 We were charged for a side of Bok Choi £16.50. I queried this and was told ours comes from China and all prices are going up This I understand but £16.50 😩 We went to the Chinese supermarket and could buy a pack of 6 Bok Choi for £3.20 After 25 happy years at our favourite Chinese the new owners have increased prices so much we will never revisit again We are all aware of what’s going on in food industry at present. Other restaurants in Chinatown were charging £10 for the same dish. Sorry to go on about this one item. We will try and find an alternative restaurant in future. Such a shame after so many happy years coming at least 12 times a year. Suggest Customers check the menus carefully before ordering.

We’ve been before and had a great experience but this time I have mixed feelings. We were not aware that dim sum ordering ends at a certain point so were told we were unable to order more mid way through the meal. The prawn items...

When we walked in, we were hoping to get a table, but the workers gave away a main floor table that was not reserved to some of their friends who arrived after us. And wanted us to carry a stroller upstairs because there lift was broken. Despite arriving earlier, we were not given priority, and this left us feeling ignored and frustrated. Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant based on my experience."

I cannot understand why this restaurant gets such good reviews. There is nothing good about it. Staff are disinterested and verging on rude. The decor is very tired and uninspiring. I had the worst most tasteless hot and sour soup I have ever had and...

Have visited before and I really like this place, welcoming, nice calm atmosphere and hot fresh Chinese food. Decent wine too. Perhaps a little pricey for some but this is the West End.

Fresh and authentic dimsum, reasonable prices for London. Pork cheung fun and siu mai were delicious! Some of the best dimsum I’ve had outside of Hong Kong.

The dimsums are overall at OK level. But that's all. The waitresses are freaking rude, almost seems like being mad with us and always put on a face like we owe them something or like they don't care about everything. But they still charges for...

Good Dim Sum - the Prawn Dumplings, Dumplings in Spicy Soup and Garlic Prawn Spring Rolls (£5.50-£6.50) were all excellent. The Roast Duck was succulent, but a little lacking in taste. Do read the bill - we had to get a surplus Chinese Tea (£2.20)...

Probably one of the worst chinese meals I had. Set A included a starter (Crispy Duck) which was okay and the best part of the meal. The main course - fried rice, chicken sweet & sour and stir fried beef - were cold. Normally I think that it is pretty rude to leave food on the table but we had no other choice - it smelled terribly… The staff was pretty rude but that wasn’t the worst part of the experience at Joy King Lau, pretty disappointing…

Found this restaurant by luck. Since we missed the main event of the Chinese new year, we did a catch up the following weekend to celebrate it. Who would have thought that every single restaurant in China town is fully booked then there would be a waitinglist/time of approx avtage 30min - 1 hour. We saw this restaurant had few people waiting and when we asked about the waiting time it was approx 10 - 15min. In less than 10 min we got in. Don't let be fooled by size of the restaurant, if you judge by the door and the window, don't cus it has 3 floors. To order is simple; you have the menu in front of you which is divided in boxes.on the menu, In the empty box infront of the dishes , you add the number of that dish you want. NOW - this part it's tricky and you need to pay ATTENTION! The restaurant has a single policy and it's only one ordering. Meaning you only get one order and your are finished. So if your hungry make sure you order enough food.. The reason behind it it's because they are busy over the weekend and avoid longer waiting time. I mean business wise I understand but as a customer, hungry customer it's annoying. The location is central and easy to find, The food is delicious and there are mix of dim sum selections ,however, I wish there was more option with no pork in the food. Remember they don't only serve dim sum but they have a huge dishes to select from which has a decent price tag on it. With our dim sum we had jasmin tea which was alright, did lack a bit of flavour but otherwise it was alright. Good dim sum 👍 Staff are very professional and helpful. I tried to sweet talk on of the staff to give us a second round. I was almost managed to convenience her if her colleague walked passed and said something. She wanted to help but couldn't do anything with the policy. I enjoyed this place and if you do get a table on the other floor, you might walk past a pay phone which is a blast from the past. Regretted that I didn't manged to try steamed buns with custard. I'll be back to try them.

A traditional Cantonese restaurant in China town. Offering dim sum and typical Cantonese dishes. Always packed with people. The restaurant had 3 floor but not very large. Need to queue during peak hours. And you only allow to place the order once during peak hour ( just to keep the timing for each table ) I would say food are average but not outstanding. But if you miss Cantonese food once a while, it’s still worth to make a visit.

The 3 stars are all for the food. The service was just really bad - very rude waitress who also forgot some dishes. The decor of the restaurant is also average, with a blue old carpet.

The food was quite good, and of a reasonable price compared to the general price range in the area. As a Taiwanese and a French eating there, we couldn't really vouch for the authenticity, but it looked correct enough for me (the minus being that the roast duck seemed a bit bony). But the service was icy cold - some might say "stereotypically Hong Kong-style", but my experience in Hong Kong was on average way better, so honestly it's probably just their problem.
