We have eaten here a number of times and the service has always been good. Today however, we asked for a table on the ground floor which was confirmed. We waited 5-10 minutes for it be cleared and prepared when a senior male waiter came over and shouted for us to go upstairs. I told him we had a table already and he shouted ‘don’t you understand? Get upstairs’. I said we just wanted the table we’d been waiting for. He told me numerous times he was IN CHARGE and quickly became aggressive and intimidating. This went on and on. We then left the restaurant and had a lovely meal elsewhere where we weren’t screamed at. The rudest restaurant encounter I’ve ever had. We will not be visiting ever again.

2024 review (updated): very disappointed with our anniversary meal here. The food was awful - it used to be really good! Fatty bits of meat with gristle, dry starters and the sizzling dish arrived with not even a tiny sizzle and was very greasy. A minor point but I was also disappointed they didn't give us orange slices at the end of the meal like they used to. The service was ok though so I've given 2 stars overall rather than 1. 2019 review (original): The food was outstanding and service fast and efficient once we were seated. Great restaurant in the heart of town.

The sweet and sour pork was mostly fatty chunks, and it was lukewarm and cold. It seemed like it had been reheated in the microwave. While there seemed to be some dishes that the local Chinese patrons enjoyed, as first-time visitors, we ordered basic Chinese dishes, and they were not good. It felt like a waste of money.

This Restaurant used to be very good and value for money, however, in the recent years it dropped massively in both service and quality of the food. It is sad but me and my family stopped going after years of almost weekly visits.

I have visited this restaurant three times over the last 9 months and found the food served to be of a good standard. I have also had no problems with the staff and found them to be attentive and helpful. Where I’m very disappointed is with the toilet facilities. Today it seemed worse than previously with a dirty looking rusty bin in the loo which could easily be replaced. The bathroom looked generally unkempt and not what you would expect in a restaurant which has a 5 score for hygiene on the window.

Posting on behalf of a friend My friend has been coming here for 27 years and highly rated this place so she recommended to us this as a lunch spot, she had stated that the place had changed ownership since covid and we just found the entire experience mid, the Vietnamese rolls came out burnt, we asked for chilli oil and was brought out chilli oil with chilli sauce in it. My friend went to use the toilet and she said it disgusting, overall my friend who has been coming here for years will not be coming back.

I'm sorry to say worst chinese meal had in long time. Sizzling black pepper beef £23.50 no hint of sizzle when arrived and distinct lack flavour/black pepper, king prawn with scallops with xo sauce £26.50 if you like broccoli this is dish for you as rough estimate I'd say 3 heads broccoli, sauce /fish lacking. Finally probably one of worst ladies toilets I've visited, if hadn't ordered food before visiting would have left.

I have been going to this place for over 20 years. Decided to revisit again after the change of ownership. The restaurant feels a little strange with new staff and less decorative. But nonetheless, the traditional Cantonese dimsum quality is still not lost. The staff are friendly and efficient.

The service here was honestly and sincerely the worst I’ve encountered. When it got to a head , one of the servers brought a glass with dripping wet hands which almost dripped into the food on the table. At this point the manager was called. He then apologized and confessed that all his staff were just a few days old! Basically, he admitted they had no training but then , you have to ask - Why put them serve with zero training? That’s taking your clients for granted

I think it is important to ignore the local guide’s review on this restaurant. It is completely misleading. The service here is really bad. The staff just chuck food on the tables and the lack of service etiquette is shocking. Please do not dine here and if you do, please put down honest reviews so others are not misled. Service here is seriously poor and the food is not great even though it’s pricey. They tried to anppease our group with a ten percent discount after we complained about the bad service but discounts are not the solution to brazenly horrible service.

Went to this restaurant on August 17th 2024 and wish I had not. Service was poor with drinks being forgotten about. When the food arrived we had three quarters of a plate of white rice dumped on our plates with a few vegetables and a token few bits of tofu. Altogether a very poor experience overall for what is supposed to be a good restaurant. You are better off finding an alternative in the main part of China town

We have been coming to this restaurant every school holiday for the past few years, and always highly recommend it to our friends . However the service is becoming too rude, unwelcoming and whilst this was tolerated for the sake of the good food, our most recent meal was bland and tasteless and we will be going elsewhere from now on. Exceptionally unfriendly staff (not all of them, they do have some nice ones), and feel like they are doing a favour to us for serving us. Feels very insulting and spoken to rudely, we will not be returning again. On the other hand the dim sum is really good usually. Hit and miss on the rest of the menu.

Overpriced & disappointing. The building is quite old, cluttered and not well kept. There was no atmosphere. But the restaurant was really busy and we had to wait over 30 minutes for a Table. The staff were so ignorant and dismissive. They avoided any eye contact, had no manners and just pointed at us. It took a further 30minutes to get our order in and drinks, as they were just swishing past us and ignoring any “excuse me” and indication we gave. At this point, if we hadn’t already been there for an hour and it wasn’t buy London, I really wanted to leave and give them the middle finger. The table cloth was dirty and they just laid a piece of paper on top to soak the sauces. The plates, bowls & cutlery was really old & used, to the point it was chipped & dangerous and the white colour had turned off blue-grey. The food finally arrived after a further 30minutes wait, the waiters just chucked it onto the table and just didn’t care. The food was ok, average at best, but the bill to over £60 for 1 main and 4 dim sums and tea. I’ve had better dim sum previously and they had the nerve to charge 10% service. The food wasn’t awful, but based on the customer service, the waiting experience, the state of the cutlery, I really would not recommend and wouldn’t come back if you paid me. It’s called Joy King Lau for a reason, it really is a joking la!

We stepped into the hotel at 950 pm and the restaurant closed at 1030 pm. This lady kept on pushing us to order fast and no warning us to step out as soon as possible. We are 4 adults and 2 kids and they didn’t even want to answer our questions on the menu. She started complaining that they have to clean and wrap up the accounts in the computer work and hence they can’t afford to keep us until closing time. It feels so disgusting to be here. I have been to this restaurant a few times and yesterday while in china town decided to go there. We arrived and we was seated on the ground floor which was good as I had my toddler with me. Everything was going fine as we settled one of the waiters came over with the menu and he had told us that after we place our order, we would have to pay. We was a bit confused as we have been to this restaurant before, and we have never had to pay before receiving our food. We thought this was unusual and called the waiter back and asked him why he said that his manager told him so we asked for the manager while waiting for the manager. We asked the couple next to our table if they had paid for their meal. They was mid meal and they said no they had not yet paid. This confirmed our suspicions that they had not liked the look of us and thought we was possibly going to do a runner. I can assure you that we had no intention of doing so and we question the manager as to why and he just repeated- Yes you have to pay. I’m sure he felt embarrassed however I decided not to give them any money and we managed to find a beautiful restaurant, just around the corner from them. (New young Cheng amazing food and fantastic service) I will never spend any money in this establishment again.

The food is still good but now is a lot more expensive; and the atmosphere somehow seems less pleasing.

Having lived in China and Hong Kong for 20 years I hope that I am a reasonable judge of Chinese food and consider that the quality served at Joy King Lau at the lower end of acceptable. One person in our group didn’t eat fish or seafood and another was a pescatarian! Still, we ordered a fair selection of dishes which catered for both palettes. I just had my meal at the restaurant and am highly disappointed with how we were treated. We asked to remove the discretionary amount which was added to our bill as we were unhappy with the service and the man who gave us the bill said in a fierce and firm tone, ‘No!’. That in itself already proves that the service is horribly lousy because of how crude he was. We were taken aback but did not want to cause a scene and just let it be. Aren’t we allowed to remove the ‘discretionary’ amount as customers because as it says it’s optional and to top it off the discretionary amount was not stated on the bill. He clearly didn’t deserve the service charge and is forcing customers to pay for bad service! Extremely bad service!

Update : 12.03.24 Felt I needed to refresh my review . I’m mystified by the recent bad reviews as I’ve been coming here for since I was a little kid . Had lunch today and it was delicious , service was fine . As for the prices , personally I don’t think they are particularly high . I don’t know where you are going to get good dim sum significantly cheaper in central London . And if you compare the price & quality to the shockingly poor Dim T or Ping Pong there’s really nothing to say . Perhaps if people want a more bougie experience then I’d suggest you head to the mediocre & expensive Din Tai Fung - it may be good n’ cheap in Taiwan but it certainly isn’t here ( or in LA for that matter ) . This isn’t my absolute favourite it’s a tie between Dim Sum Duck & Royal China Club .But that doesn’t justify hating on Joy King Lau , I’m just so happy that it’s still there and is solid as ever ! 2nd Update : 18.03.24 Went back for lunch on Saturday with two friends who’ve never been before . What can I say ? It was delicious as it’s ever been . From Har Gau to Xiao long Bao to Scallop Cheung Fun it’s all good . We had a good amount of food and with service it was under £80 how is that expensive for three adults ? They really liked it too , and judging from the packed restaurant everyone else looked to me to be enjoying their food so I would really take those one star reviews with a hefty pinch of salt . I think it’s fair enough to moan about the price ( it has increased but what hasn’t , I eat out regularly but I’m not blaming the business owners for hiking up prices - if you know anything about the restaurant industry and the very real existential challenges they’re facing right now you will know why London is chock full of chain restaurants - they’re only the ones who can afford the ridiculous rents ( Westminster is one of the worst for this ) and crazy business rates not to mention the staffing issues . Ok going off on a tangent now , also regarding service . Are people seriously mad because no one is making you feel like special when you enter the restaurant , I mean have you ever been to Hong Kong ? This is a Cantonese restaurant ! No one here is going to introduce themselves to you , or ask you how your day went & then get down on their haunches and counsel you through your order . I personally cannot bear that kind of pandering - you don’t need to pretend to be interested in me just take my order and bring the food ! Anything else is superfluous . All I want to say is that this is a good Chinese restaurant , with good dim sum and 1 star review for this place is not only petty , but downright spiteful and unnecessary .

I returned with my girlfriend to this restaurant after not going for 10 years. I had a nice memory that was completely destroyed and here's why: The food is bad, of poor quality and of dubious origin. The staff is terrible, they do everything to be rude and rude. We ordered Cantonese duck, rice corn soup and dumplings. One worse than the other. Finally, the absurd price, the dishes I listed plus a beer are £75, a steal! it is clear that this dilapidated, dirty and poorly maintained place only continues thanks to naive tourists, being 2 steps away from Leister square. It is recommended not to visit on weekends. The tone and attitude of the waiter are simply trying to drive away customers. You can only place an order in one round, and you are not allowed to place additional orders. Ask the shop assistant for soy sauce and chee cheong fun, and he will insist on arguing with you about ordering the sweet sauce that comes with the dish. 😑 The food is good but not outstanding. The main reason is that the attitude of the store clerk will make you feel uncomfortable paying for it, as if you owe them something. No next time.

All the reasons why I had a very bad experience, why I would never go there and caution anybody considering going there 1. Very rude response from all the staff expect for one new recruit, the new recruit was very humble, but even if he came to serve us, he was overpowered by the other staff whom I am assuming that they work there, because after I had a bad experience at this place, I read many reviews and everybody said that the customer experience is bad 2. There is this rule with dumpling which I found to be very weird, in the very first go you have to order as many dumpling dishes as you want, if you taste something and like it, you cannot order more after that. (what is the point in running a place where a customer likes something you make but you do not serve it?) 3. Because of point number 2 we ordered 6 different dumpling dishes, of which 2 of them were never served to us because they forgot. We were waiting for the 2 dishes thinking it is in the making, but throughout our wait time, we were treated as if they were letting us sit on the table like they were giving us shelter for charity, while the 2 rude staff kept asking us why we were not eating anything, we said that we were waiting for those dishes. Yet it never arrived. 4.Because we thought that the kitchen was very busy and it might take time, we went ahead and ordered a main course. The main course arrived but the 2 dumpling dishes did not arrive. We ordered another main course, and the dumplings came along with the main course. All this while we were being treated like we were wasting their time, but it was them who were wasting our time. 5. When we told them that the 2 dumpling dishes arrived late, the rude staff literally asked "Do you want it or not?". We were being treated like we made mistake in ordering the dishes, while it was actually them who wasted our time and treated like they were doing us charity. 6. Topping all of this, there was the gratuity bill along with the bill. Gratuity for being treated like I was receiving charity food from them. Neither is the taste of the food, nor the portion size was worth enduring the rude treatment from the staff. Ended up walking out of the place feeling miserable.

Used to be brilliant, now bland and insipid - expensive = £20 for runny Japanese tofu with slimy mushrooms.

Went there as heard a recommendation from Rory Stewart on the rest is politics podcast . the food was awful . Just could not eat it , bland , cold and greasy , not a great combination. Will stick to his political reviews - much better choice .

I’ve been coming here for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, now that it’s under new management I will definitely not be coming back. Very hesitance to go but gave it a try. The prices have gone up, the level of service was not the same and the dim sum was mediocre.

Totally enjoyed our yumcha at Joy King Lau. Visited Chinatown after several years and with a huge hankering for steaming yumcha, we headed directly to JKL. At the outset let me say despite reviews and common lore, the servers guided and smiled. Not too widely. But smiled. They lived up to our memories of deliciousness. We began by ticking off our choices on the paper menu, then sipping on warm tea, fidgeting with our chopsticks, bowls and Chinese soup spoons just waiting for those baskets piled high to come teetering in our direction. They did. And go! There was no stopping us. In between balancing prawn hargaos into mouths, cheung fans, baos, ribs, sui Mai all were eaten in almost reverent silence barring the mmm’s slurps and yummmms. My favourite was the soup dumpling - having broken the first one with my clumsiness, I gingerly scooped the second one into the spoon and let the light yet rich tasty broth flood the taste buds and with slight chewing after of the herbed minced pork it was all gone. Another favourite is the duck pork prawn in gluttonous rice steamed in a lotus leaf: a ceremonial unwrapping and then savouring morsels of gooey perfection. I could go on and on. Instead we’ll just plan and revisit. London winters need yumcha to thrive!!!

Classic local Chinese type restaurant. No pretensions and not fine dining. Friendly Chinese with a sizable menu. Food was simple and tasty. They even removed pineapple chunks for me given my preference which was something that counts. A small restaurant and a number of Chinese eating which is always a good sign.

Average Chinese food. They taste good but nothing special, same as other restaurant in China town. Staff were not very welcoming, atmosphere is rather quiet.

Really overprice, this place looks like it has been taking over new ownership and they have increased the price 50%, £20 for mixed stir fried vegetables...a shame, used to be our favourite place in China town, not worth anymore

It was my first time in a long time like in 13 or 15 years back going there. It felt a bit strange. Food quality was okay nothing special but lacked a bit of flavour. Dim sum was very nice tasty but the rest of the meals we ordered were somewhat pricey.

Went for dinner last night after going there for Dim Sum a month ago. Completely different experience. Dim Sum at lunchtime was excellent and good value; dinner in the evening poor and expensive. Food took ages to arrive and when it eventually arrived (after a chap who I think was the manager came up and told the staff the food was in the lift) was whisked into a microwave to be heated up again. Whilst we were waiting, one family basically walked out refusing to pay as the food was cold, and another family sitting beside us were saying they won’t return again. I certainly won’t be returning. Maybe for dim sum, but wouldn’t entertain the thought of going any other time. Sad, really.

Came here for my birthday dinner but was disappointed. I used to come here often. Food was served cold and late - we nearly finished the first 2 dishes before the other 2 arrived. Food was left on the counter without serving. Rice was overpriced - £4.5 per portion which was very small. Service was non existent, we had to ask for drinks and go up to counter asking for the bill. I won’t be coming back.

Food was good. Noticed i was charged twice for a dish (top and bottom of receipt), after which they said it was another line item. Double checked and it was not, and they removed it.

Deserved 4 stars for overall Asian food standard. House special mix seafood fried rice - 5 stars(very tasty) Chinese spinach veggies - 5 stars (very tasty) Seafood Tom yum gong - below average (anyways, this is not Thai restaurant) Chicken with salted fish claypot - average (they don’t served in claypot, losing the authentic taste, and usually the typical famous chinese dish should be Pork with salted fish claypot

In Chinatown there is one Chinese restaurant next to another, which is why it is not easy to choose. We chose the Haozhan restaurant because there was still some space outside. Unfortunately, the quality of the food is not good, the meat was tough and the noodles were, in our opinion, instant noodles. The service was okay, but you always had the feeling that the space should be freed up as quickly as possible. We then gave a hefty tip of around 12% on the bill, without our consent. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this restaurant; you should rather visit one of the numerous other locations.

Wow great bargain quality food. The noodles, the veggies, the buns, the Mao Pao, and so much more with friendly supportive service and options of buffet or takeaway box. Great price and worth the visit for quality food at a super quality price.

I don’t know you guys but something people don’t know about is that this restaurant takes advantage of its employees. The service charges you guys paid ain’t pay to the employees but to its owner and manager. It pays far, far lower minimum than the law is ask for, not to mention that this restaurant doesn’t have any nowadays computerized income system that may raised the possibility of intentional running unreported taxes or money laundering. The manger “ban” or “van” always make promises to its employees and intentionally trick on in order to gain self benefit. Please don’t support this kind of restaurant, and the restaurant has serious hygiene issues need to be resolved.

First time here, over the weekend. Before we even got to sit down, the lady taking us to the table proceeded to tell me “It’s busy, so we need the table back in 1 hour and a half” Which would have been fine, had this been mentioned at time of booking- but it wasn’t. Already felt rushed, before we had even started. The place was busy & tbh seemed slightly chaotic at points. The food was average dim sum. Nothing different to other places I’ve been. Ordered a lemonade which I had to chase 20 mins later. Also ordered a won ton soup, which never arrived. Ordered crispy seafood noodles, which were very oily and the seafood wasn’t great. Every dish was very gloopy and not a massive amount of flavour. The waitress who served our table was efficient and nice though. Would I recommend.. probably not. Would I return.. No is the answer.

This was my second visit to Hunan Terrace, and once again, they exceeded my expectations. The experience was amazing, with every detail improving upon the last. Our waiter, Andrii, was incredibly kind and professional, making us feel truly welcome. The owner and manager also made a point to ensure we had a wonderful time. The menu is impressive, offering a wide variety of options for pescatarians, vegetarians, and those who enjoy fish and meat. The food and service at Hunan Terrace continue to surprise and delight me. I'll definitely be coming back!
