Never visited while it was still a fine dining restaurant, booked a table for Valentine's Day to later find out they had rebranded into a steak and burger house. Didn't have a problem with this as we both like steak and thought if anyone knew how to prepare a good steak it would be a kitchen staff with fine-dining experience. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, the steak that I ordered medium rare was thin and sinewy, and came well-done. The worst part however is that I ordered a T-Bone steak and that wasn't what I got. A T-Bone by definition is a cut of steak with a bone through the middle with sirloin on the one side and the more costly fillet on the other. The steak I actually received had no fillet attached whatsoever, it was just a sirloin with a small piece of bone attached. With this place having a history of fine dining you would expect them to know this so it definitely felt more like a malicious way of ripping off the customer than genuine incompetence. The bramble my partner ordered was gin and soda with blackcurrant squash. They had run out of crème brûlée, one of only three desserts they offered. The wait staff were all very friendly and attentive and the poor rating is in no way a reflection on them but the food served made for a very disappointing meal. The buffalo wings were good though, try the wings.

We went for dinner with family. It was tremendous. I had the Halibut with scallops, mash, blackpudding etc. Which was amazing! The fish was pure white and cooked perfectly. My husband had the rop steak with pepper sauce which he said was perfectly cooked. It was with triple cooked chips and he asked for rosemary & parmesan on them...mm, mm. My sister in la6 had fillet steak which was perfect too. A way burger was had by my brother in law which was he said was the Best Budher he'd Ever Had!!!! So well done to chef. 2 of us decided to share a cheese board, but it was disappointing and a bit mean. There were only 2 small bits of cheese. So please give more cheese. Crackers could have been a bit more interesting as well. When back on wales again wiil definitely visit again!

Having heard and read about this place I thought a meal was called for, being a lunch person two of us went on Saturday. Entering the restaurant we were greeted by a boom of a voice from a waiter some distance away calling, Hi guys?. Told him I had a booking, and we were shown to our table. asked if there was somewhere to hang our coats? but got no answer, so had to put them over the back of our chairs. Menus came, special and a la carte, we quickly made our minds up, no starter just a main of the a la carte. Fish for my friend and beef for me. great, started to have our drink then the waiter came back, the beef is cooked in a water bath he said so there will be about a 15 minutesdelay, firstly the waiter should have known that when we ordered, or better still it should have been printed on the menu. I asked if we could have either some olives or bread with olive oil and balsamic while we waited, off the waiter went and came back to inform me that firstly they had no bread????? it had not been baked that day and secondly they did not have olives???? but I could have nuts. NO thanks! a bottle of tap water was brought, I asked if we could have sparkling rather then the tap. The waiter came back with two plastic bottles of water. A cafe or chippy or take away yes plastic bottle, but a supposed five start restaurant NO. he placed them on the table, did not open them or asked if we wanted lemon or ice and went off. Now this place prides its self on locally sourced produce, the water was Buxton, where? if they are going to use plastic, was Wales' premier brand of Brecon Careg??? Food came beef was fab cooked as I asked for and tasted great, the veg was cold not impressed at all. Triple cooked chips were tasty but yet again a place trying to get to the next level in food, does not offer vinegar with the chips, just bad, but perhaps a local thing? The fish, my friend told me was excellent and he really loved it. half way through the meal the front doors open and a man with a huge trolly starts to come in delivering veg? the waiter quickly shows him the side door, but he still had to come in to the main room clattering around to deliver when people are eating, not impressive. Finished the meal ordered cheese so we had been in the place for about an hour when the waiter comes over to say that the card machine was not working so we would have to pay cash? but that there was a Barclays bank about 50 yards up the road. yet again WHAT? why not say when we got in before we sat down to enjoy a lunch so much easier. The cheese came bit cold, but as I always say cheese is one of the hardest things for any place to get right and I perfectly understand when its a bit cold. I had 4 crackers on my plate, the person with me had five, i looked at a lady on the next table and she had eight, whats the method behind this? Espresso came luke warm, as we are sitting there, the owner I presume? brings a bike into the main room parks against a wall to go for a ride later? yet another first for me to see. There were nine of us in total in the place, would it have hurt the owner to come and ask if all was well, I am sure the waiter had told him I was not happy, so yet another little detail thats was not good customer happiness is what makes a place tick. My bill came to £164, granted there was champagne etc in that, so not cheap, the waiter asked if all was ok, but it was said in a matter of fact way not really interested I felt, especially as the waiter knew I was not well pleased as it was. I am a firm believer in giving a chance to a place being aware what a bad review can do to a restaurant, so I always finish up with the same question, would I go again? I think the answer to this is NO and I don't like to say that!!!! One last thing please get rid of the bowl of goldfish in dirty water not a good look.

The starters we ordered were very bland and didn't feel like they were worth the price. The mains were very tasty and enjoyed more than the starters. The staff were not always very attentive with the exception of one lady who tried her best whilst dealing with the busy restaurant. It's a small menu and even then some of the food on the menu was not available which was very disappointing. The food here was average, probably wouldn't go here again as I felt it was overpriced for the food you get.

We (myself, my husband and our two adult daughters) went for dinner on the Saturday night and enjoyed a wide range of dishes, including an unusual but delicious curried scotch egg and a very good steak for yours truly. Have to say we were disappointed, having seen the menus on the website, to be offered, at 7.30 in the evening, a limited £20 set menu of which there is no mention on the website. But l guess the menu has to be adapted for a cold Wednesday night in April in Merthyr. Good quality food, just not what we expected. Suggest you check the menu before you book or sit down as the web site is very misleading. A menu posted on the door would be helpful.

Visited today for Sunday Lunch as a party of 3 - booked approx a month ago and a large deposit paid. We were seated downstairs which we had been previously informed about. No windows, remnants of Christmas decorations still on the walls and say under a flickering halogen office style light and next to the toilets and staff door which slammed at least twice a minute for the two hours we were there, it took the kind off the clinical smell of the toilets.

Visited Jol’s in mid December with friends for a very expensive festive 3 course lunch costing £28pp. The meal was a disgrace and grossly overpriced. My first course was a twice baked cheese soufflé, which was the size of a mince pie and tasted mainly of salt, the main course was supposed to be turkey with all the trimmings, except there were no trimmings and the vegetables given for two people were sparce to say the least. One of my friends had the cod with a crab cake, except there was no crab cake but the worst part was the dessert. It was described on the menu as”mince pie baked cheesecake with orange and cinnamon shortbread and glazed clementines”. Nowhere did it say that it would be a deconstructed dessert. What actually arrived was a spoonsize blob of cheesecake, a few crumbs, which I’m assuming was the shortbread and a couple of segments of fresh clementine. I wrote an email of complaint to the restaurant and have never received a reply, so I shan’t be setting foot inside there again.

We visited Jols on Saturday night for one of our date nights, and it was made even more special by the outstanding service and awesome food we experienced. Right from the moment we walked in, staff were attentive and engaging, not too over the top but at a level you would expect from a restaurant such as this. There was a great buzz in the restaurant, mixture of couples, friends and families, and the music was spot on too adding to the atmosphere. The food was to die for: local produce, bursting with flavours and colour and loved that menu offered a variety of food and combination of dishes one wouldn't ordinarily think to have. JOLS is fast becoming one of our go to places and is a real gem in Merthyr as it is evolving into an up and coming cultural hub.

We arrived around 13.30 on Friday afternoon having not visited before. There were 3 people in there. Sat down in cosy surroundings so everything seemed promising. The waitress came with menus which were A4 sheets of paper and had not even been laminated. I appreciate that menus can change but it did not look very professional. We ordered hot drinks which came and the latte was luke warm. We complained and was given another one which was also luke warm. The white fabric napkin on the table was black in places! My boyfriend had the bread and butter pudding. It was absolutely tiny with half a scoop of ice cream. We had to ask for more ice cream. At this point, one of the 3 waitresses came over to offer a filter coffee instead of the latte and that was also luke warm. Whilst we support local businesses and encourage non chain brands, this was extremely unprofessional, disappointing and overpriced . Would not return

We arrived at 7pm, in to a virtually empty restaurant. To begin with, the drinks menu was poor. Although seeming to have an abundance of choice on the menu, after deciding what we wants, the waitress informed us they now only stocked drafts. Following this, we scanned the main menu. I was bitterly disappointed with their selection, with very little option for those who aren’t meat Easter’s. We ended up sharing crab for main (pretty decent - but not necessarily worth the £12). For mains we both chose the lamb (£23). The lamb was barely cooked, and after just one bite I gave the remainder of the meat to my other half (which he didn’t particularly enjoy either). After I finished my meal, I decided to check the online menu - which drew us to the restaurant, only to find a completely different menu ! So long story short (Ish) we were both disappointed with the quality of food + final bill.

My husband had the crab to start followed by fillet steak with mustard greens, mashed potatoes and a red wine jus. It was all utterly delicious and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

Visited Jol's for a meal on my birthday. Great food. Great service. Not a cheap venue, but worth every penny spent. I will definitely be returning.

Food was amazing. Can not fault the food. But it’s way too expensive. If you pay their prices to eat there, your paying for the experience not just the food. And to be honest, there’s nothing special about that experience. Was really empty considering it was 7.30 on a Friday night.... more staff than customers. Premesis is a bit dreary and dark and lacks any imagination. The food salvaged the night a little but as an overall, I wouldn’t recommend this place to friends and family and won’t return at my own choice

This local Pub turned out to be just what we were looking for. The pub was recommended by a local it was extremely busy and it was essential to book as it was very busy. The staff were super friendly and provided home cooked food of the highest standard with equally good service at excellent prices that didn’t break the bank. My lamb shank was excellent along with all of our parties dishes. Can’t recommend this establishment more.

I’d give no star if I could. Ordered 2 tray meals half and half and looks like they just banged them into the micro and called it a day. Rice was hard and all burnt and the whole meal just tasted of burnt the chicken balls were horrid and burnt tasted as if the oil hasn’t been changed in a while also the spare ribs in bbq sauce 8 pound and they were dreadful even the popadoms tasted of burnt oil

Excellent restaurant! Diner en famille et très satisfait de la qualité des plats proposés. Le propriétaire (Jonathan) et son épouse nous ont très bien accueilli et nous ont recommandé des plats suivant nos gouts. Je recommande fortement ce restaurant.
