This is the second time we have been here now. The first time was just for some take away chips and curry sauce. Returned a few weeks later again on the way home from the lakes and had the pensioners special (we aren’t pensioners). Perfect size if you aren’t starving. Fish was lovely with light crispy batter, lovely chips and again … their amazing curry sauce with the bits in. This place (plaice) is lovely and clean. As a lot of fish and chip places can be a bit on the grubby side so keep up the good work.

Everything here is perfect! Best takeaway / sit down chip shop in Carlisle! Good food, staff and traditional atmosphere.

This is such a great place to find great food. We stopped here as we was camping in the area, 17 of us all had a take out, it was all amazing food. No one was disappointed and it was such a good reasonable price. Would 100% recommend this place to eat in or out.

We stopped for a takeaway on the way home one night just before closing. We thought there would be no choice and we'd just have to have what was left but there was loads! The food was lovely and good value. Only two gripes being they put far too much salt on and my pickled onion was a bit soft.

The Original John's Plaice Carlisle Went for a family takeout 880811530 Total rip off, I've seen bigger goldfish and they are £6 , staff were impolite and blonde haired woman in her 30s was arrogant to my girlfriend last time too.I said the fish are small she replied don't eat them then great customer service which kicked into a series of events which the young lad joined in when I asked for my order ,he was atleast 8 feet away and said in not a nice tone she was doing 2 orders - she could if told us that.He overheard the small fish complaint and butted I'm impolitey to which I said what's it got to do with you to which he was still not nice at all, review the cctv you people , I couldn't take it and and then said to him who you talking like that too ,to which he played innocent- I was annoyed and said he was acting like a little boy which he was, he knew exactly which buttons to press while playing innocent, then the blond woman told us to leave which we all couldn't wait to do........Total rip off ,go buy your gold fish people coz they arnt much bigger. , too expensive ,covert wind up staff who play innocent when confronted Avoid , rip off ,staff I met were unprofessional , bye bye you won't be seeing us again

The staff were fabulous, kind and helpful. My friend was in a wheelchair and they were all brilliant. The food was hot & tasty, and good value for money. Table service was spot on!

Really enjoyed my small cod, small chips and mushy peas. Just the right amount for me. I would definitely recommend.

We decided to pop in today for the first time since the Covid situation started. A nice update to the place and a feeling of more space was good. My wife and I both went for the pensioner’s fish and chips special and we were very satisfied with what we got. A decent piece of cod and a small portion of chips, with mushy peas, bread and a cup of tea or coffee for just under £10 each. My son decided to have the cod fish cakes and chips with beans and he was very happy with the plateful he received. The staff were great and we highly recommend you try it.👍

Called in here whilst staying nearby. Ordered Fish and chips and Scampie and chips pensioners specials. They came with mushy peas, tea and bread and butter. Was looking forward to a pudding but was totally full up so I couldn't fit in a pudding. Lovely food and efficient staff. The restaraunt was spotless. Would recommend and would definately go back if we were in the area.

I was passing by on my way home at the right time so decided to stop here for an easy dinner. Try the Seniors Special, great value for the smaller appetite.

Popped in early afternoon, as always, pleasant front of house. Getting to that age, of ordering pensioner's fish n chips. Excellent fish, best battered fish I've had in the last 3 years (that was the last time I was there). Mushy peas, bread/butter, and earl grey tea, and all for £9.95. Living within 2 miles of John's Plaice, it is my default, 'quick meal' option, and never disappoints on quality. You get quick and professional service, with excellent quality. The few occasions we have eaten on the premises is also excellent and being a former Little Chef, is well spaced for tables. In comparison to another nearby Fish and Chip shop, the prices are competitive too.

My dad has been coming here for years with my mum. Now comes with myself . We went today after his chemo treatment. Very very disappointing staff not friendly not bothered. My dads meal was awful dry fish not very hot. My grilled fish only just cooked. Dried up chips Luke warm tea. Was this because we were first in dad thought his fish was a refry leftover. Waitresses not interested more concerned with folding boxes and wrapping cutlery. Not interested when we told her. We most definitely have wiped this place off our list. We will never ever go in again and it’s vastly overpriced.

We visited John’s Plaice as we were told they served the best fish and chips in the county. If this is true, then I’m afraid, our fish and chip eating days are unfortunately over. Even our dog wouldn’t touch the fish and he loves his fish Fridays. What made it worse is the way a member of who served me, spoke to me. Uninterested, arrogant and just damn right rude. Why people like this are in a customer serving role, I will never know. First visit and will be our last!

Love this place! Always good food and good value for money. Freshly cooked. Place was immaculate. Service was good, always very polite and courteous. Would highly recommend this place to anyone.

We visited this fish and chip ship today and I must say I was very disappointed with the cost of things.Me and my daughter just wanted a light snack so ordered 2 portions of chips. 2 cans of drink and 2 cans of coke, and 2 rolls. Total cost almost 16 pounds. I did have cheese and gravy on my chips, but this made the cost of the chips almost 8 pounds.3.20 chips 1.75 gravy (what really)2.50 for a sprinkle of cheese. (absolutely crazy I felt robbed)7.50 for chips cheese and gravy, come on guys you need to look at your pricing model. Not a happy customer, and we won't be returning.10 pounds for a bit of fish is extortionate. Please sort out your pricing. You are not a 5 star restaurant.

stopped for something to eat while staying overnight in carlisle. Fancied fish and chips and came across this place by chance. We both had haddock and chips, food was hot, batter was crispy and overall we really enjoyed it. Also service was super fast and the price reasonable. we would return and definitely recommend.

Last week Pre ordered a takeaway for half an hour when I went in to get it half an hour later a women was in front of me ordering, instead of giving me mine (that should have been ready) the lady made up the new order used all the fish and made me wait until she had cooked more fish, I wouldn’t mind but she never even explained or apologised….Used here before and always been happy with the food but really miffed me that she done that.Won’t be returning

Both had fish n chips , beautiful freshly cooked cod with crispy thin batter and lovely “soak up” the vinegar chips . We will go back next time in the area . Excellent job all round . Quick point the ladies serving were very friendly

Called in Sunday and was shocked by the prices just under 12quid for fish and chips just under 2 for 1 scoop of ice cream and £2 40 for a teabag and hot water. Won't be back at these prices.

Ordered John’s Plaice Fish and Chips takeaway for me, my husband and my son. Fish and Chips were OK, Chicken Nuggets looked a bit undercooked from the outside but OK inside. Chips were nice though, better than your average Fish and Chip shop. Trying to get through to them on the phone was a pain, and they didn’t answer. Had to walk in and order, which was OK but a bit of an annoyance as we would have liked our food brought to the car for us. Been inside before, reminds you of a typical Little Chef style. Doesn’t look that modern, and the whole thing is a odd location for a Fish and Chip shop. Parking was no problem, but getting out onto the main road was difficult as cars were flying by.Overall, recommend Johns Plaice

Ordered a takeaway for collection. So that I didn't have to go inside I called mid afternoon and paid for a 6pm collection slot, giving them our car registration number. We arrived at exactly 6pm, when a member of staff came out to us with our order and a BIG smile. It was obviously fresh out of the fryer as when we got home (15 mins drive) it was all still piping hot. I had the fish, which was absolutely divine and my daughter had sausage which disappeared in no time. I will definitely be returning during and after lockdown.

Popped in to order and collect a fish and chip takeaway. The queue maintained a safe 2m rule format out into the car park. All our order was cooked to order and was delicious. The fish was just right and no bones. Would highly recommend if you want good no frills British fish and chips. Portions were big.

Excellent service quickest I have had in any establishment. Meal was delicious and piping hot. Highly recommended, to anyone passing it's well worth stopping in my first visit il definitely be back fish and chips were fab, best batter I have had.

After a busy day we had worked up an appetite and as we were nearby we thought a traditional fish n chips would be a nice treat. I had the cod and my wife had the scampi. Freshly made and a decent portion too... absolutely delicious. Two clean plates anyway. Would highly recommend and will be back for sure.

Just had lunch at Johns Plaice near Carlisle absolutely delicious. I had pensioner fish chips & mushy peas, tea bread & butter. My husband had a full size portion of the same. Although it was very busy to eat in & takeaway the service was good. Very varied menu not just fish & chips. I would highly recommend a visit

What a find! Proper sit in chippy with amazing grub! 10 years since I had a proper Cumberland patty and these did not disappoint! Will be back next time I am up that way! Yum!

Arrived at John's place Wednesday afternoon, seated quickly, the lady that came for the order was ram right rude and not very helpful. One member of our party ordered 2 slices of bacon, but instead of the 2 fried eggs we asked for a extra slice of bacon or some mushrooms didnt even get the whole sentence out of my mouth and it was a sharp NO we dont do swaps, not the best of starts or the best of customer service. However the meals arrived and were really nice but the lady who served us just deflated us. The whole time we were eating 2 waitress were stood about 2 arms lengths away staring quite off putting. Will not return

Speedy service, attentive staff, piping hot meals serving generous portions at a reasonable price. Passed this restaurant so many times and never been in, so glad we stopped, will definitely return.

Friendly staff and quality food! Me and two other friends stopped off after our football on a weekend and sampled the extensive menu. I went for the Johns Special whilst my colleagues enjoyed chicken nuggets and a cheese pattie. My fish is the tastiest fish I’ve ever had from a takeaway! Will, without doubt recommend to friends and family. Both of my acquaintances enjoyed their meal also.

It was our pleasure to enjoy " fresh " fish in this neck of the woods. Carlisle has always been a hard place to find a good fish and chip shop with consistent quality in the supply of fish. We enjoyed a very pleasant meal with good service. Enough said.

Treat yourself and go that little bit further to Dalston to the Fryery. Johns plaice staff are most obnoxious and rude. Food mediocre. Cheer up you miserable git.

We live locally and go here 2 or 3 times a month. It has a good range of fish dishes and my husband is particularly keen on their breakfasts, served until mid afternoon. The place is immaculately clean and the food is of a really good standard. It's not the cheapest fish and chip shop locally, but it's reliably good so worth every penny, the chips are particularly excellent. The staff are always lovely and very welcoming.

Nice food. On holiday in area so tried it out Busy but fast service. Food was nice decent size portions.

Visited many times but was disappointed on our last visit the portions are getting smaller and the mushy peas are just a stodgy lump, service was not a problem the staff are very good and friendly.

Visited here for the first time today for tea on our way home. Wanted to sit in and placed our order with an older lady at the till. After we ordered we told her we were eating in (she just assumed we were having take out and hadn’t actually asked if we were eating in/taking out), she made us refund our order and then reorder our meal at a table with a different staff member, even though we told her we still wanted the same food we’d ordered. The food was great however, I found our server to be unnecessarily awkward and ended up paying £5 more for ‘customer service’ by sitting in. A smile goes a long way. Wish we’d just had take out!

Comimos aquí hace un par de años y fue bastante agradable, así que decidimos ir a comer hoy. Bastante tranquilo cuando llegamos, lo que nos sorprendió un sábado almuerzo, pero nos sentamos en nuestra mesa y nuestro pedido fue tomado a menos de cinco minutos.

Excelente lugar para parar a comer en 'pescado' y patatas fritas, también una para llevar. El pescado era de primera clase, con una pasta ligera y crocante. El pescado estaba acompañada de una generosa porción de patatas fritas recién hechas. Hay amplios asientos en una zona luminosa, amplia y limpia de comedor y el servicio fue proporcionado por el personal atento y muy agradable. Está en la carretera principal con un amplio aparcamiento. Pescado y patatas fritas para dos con bebidas fueron más de 20 libras, así que no es caro para comer. Sin duda merece la pena una parada.

great tasting fish and chips, very clean and tidy, tables cleared straight away so no waiting for tables very friendly staff always ready to help, do a variety of foods and cater for glueten free diets well worth a visit

Rang up and booked a table which was a good idea as the place was busy. Most of us ordered pensioners fish and chips (smaller portions) wouldn't have been able to eat a full size portion. Desserts good as well. Staff efficient.

Have not been here for a while as it is a 50 mile round trip for us but it is well worth the visit when we do make it here .It is always very busy which is a good sign and proves how good it is for both takeaway or for a sit down tea .The portions are great and all very reasonable priced .If you find that a main course is to big opt for the pensioners fish & chips which leaves you some room for a pudding We will try not to leave it so long for our next visit

This Is a very good fish and chip shop but the fish batter is very greasy. You can drive into WIGTON and get better fish and chips for less money

Llamado en la otra noche aquí aparcamiento estaba casi lleno, buena señal. Fuimos dentro de lugar estaba muy concurrido, Otra buena señal. El servicio era rápido y amable. El pescado y las patatas fritas eran muy buenos algunos de los mejores que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Vale la pena una visita sin duda alguna volveremos a visitar.

We love this place. A bit like a canteen, no airs or graces, but clean, and staff are efficient. Good food freshly cooked. Breakfasts served until 4 pm.

This was the last take-away we tried in Silloth, definately saved the best til last, good value, freshly cooked fish and chips, - just one portion of large chips is more than enough for two people!! Great service good value, shame we did not find it until the last night in Silloth. Staff very friendly and efficient, also they serve "scraps" only find these in chippies "up-north", wonderful.

Often pass this place and this time we thought we would give it a try, and it's nice. It's nothing fancy it's just a chip shop with some tables, the food is good, good tastie chip shop food.There are only two down sides for me, we were there and it was busy with take always there was loads of people walking past our table to get to and from the take away counter.Price, it's a bit expensive for my liking.Up sides the food is good, good location when travelling on the 595, parking is good. Plus alday breakfasts.

Decent takeaway. They do a wide range of food and deliver. Donner Kebabs and pizzas as well as decent fish and chips. We used this place twice and certainly had no complaints. Well done for feeding the masses.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a meal with my partner this week and It was lovely. We were greeted by very friendly staff and shown to our table. The menu is excellent with a good choice both for adults and children (not just fish eaither, burgers, chicken, salads) and the staff happy to cater for every request, my partner wanted her meal slightly different to the menu and this was no problem at all. My meal was Cod and chips with mushy peas, my girlfriends was haddock and chips with sald, together with bread & butter and a pot of tea. The meal was beautiful, best fish & chips I have had in years. The restaurant is spotless, and bright and a pleasure to sit in. Staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for us. The desserts, were wonderful, we both ordered the hot chocolate brownie with ice cream, my partner had black currant ice cream with hers and I had chocolate, it was wonderful. If you find yourself close by, pop in and have yourself a wonderful meal. (oh and they also do take away too).

Visited this week for a meal, we were met with very friendly staff and shown to our table. The menu is excellent lots of variety for adults and children, and staff happy to cater for every request. I ordered the haddock & chips and asked if I could include a salad instead of peas, no problem at all. My meal arrived and I was delighted, large haddock, with beautiful varied salad, including lettuce, cucumber, tomatoe, peppers, grapes, orange, & homemade coleslaw with chips, and a separate bowl,of scraps which I requested. With bread & butter and a pot of tea. The meal was beautiful, best fish & chips I have had in years. My partner ordered Cod & chips & mushy ideas and he was also commenting how beautiful his meal was. The restaurant is spotless, and bright and a pleasure to sit in. Staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for us. Then we ordered desserts, well what a delight we both ordered the hot chocolate brownie and I ordered the black currant ice cream with it, we could choose any flavour, my partner ordered the brownie with death by chocolate Icecream, the dessert was amazing highly recommended. Amazing place highly recommend, good value for money. Fantastic friendly staff, we will certainly be going back for lots more meals.

Called in for supper on Saturday. Staff very attentive and food arrived really quickly. Food was piping hot and the salad with it was crisp and fresh. Food was delicious.

Johns Place is a popular old style fish restaurant located on a very busy stretch of the A595 just to the west of Carlisle. It is family run and serves good quality fish and chips etc. Prices are no better than average however.

This is a fish and chip restaurant and takeaway. The fish and chips are to die for and there are other items on the menu, such as ham, egg and chips, pattie, steak pie, etc.The staff are lovely and we have always been served quickly - normally we are in and out in three quarters of an hour, feeling very satisfied. We have been going to this restaurant since it first opened and have never been disappointed.

We called here on the way home, fish was cooked beautifully and the chips were gorgeous , quick service and nice and clean surroundings, yes it's a little more expensive but there's plenty of parking and it's convenient we love it

I pass here on a regular basis and have often been tempted to pop in. Today I did with my daughter. Personally my johns special fish and chips we good, well proportioned, nice soft fish with a light crispy batter. The mushy pees were slightly sweet and sticky , just how I like them. My daughters Cumberland sausage on the other hand was far from acceptable. To explain my daughter is ten and when she said to me it was overcooked I took her comment with a pinch of salt. How right she was - I tried it myself and it was dry and flavourless on the outside and a little chewy in the middle. Kids being kids she had eaten her chips etc first so we didn't ask for an exchange. Upon completing the meal I explained the problem to the waiter and to be fair he was apologetic. That's where the complaint seem to stop, I throughly expected a couple of quid taken off the bill but that didn't happen, so I paid and politely expressed my dismay and said I would not be returning. Such a shame, I favour small businesses like this where possible . Having now read a few reviews I am not the first to complain about the sausage ....

Been here a few times always on the way home from Carlisle as its easy and convenient, chips from here are absolutely gorgeous nice and crispy and the fish lovely too, come in a handy little box so you can eat out of the shop if you don't want to sit in, great price, great service! WouldHighly recommend

I usually don't like chip shop fish but from here I do.....and there are never any empty plates in our house after a visit. Either to takeaway or sit in the food is brilliant and the service fast.

Popped in for a bacon Sandwich. There was 4 of us each had a bacon buttie and bottle of pop not very nice at all and to top it off it cost us £24. Very very expensive will not go back.

Feeling a bit peckish on the way home so popped in for chip butties an expensive mistake, £2:35 for just enough chips to cover the bottom of the roll...about a tatties worth and then insult to injury 35p for a sachet of sauce! All in all £2-70, I could have had an outstanding bacon baguette in town for that price...

very expensive fish and chip shop cost us £32 for 2 cumberland sausage and chips and half chips, colesaw cost £2.25 for a small portion,onion rings were over cooked and hard and the bottles of pop were overpriced .the only good thing was the staff they were lovely.

Called in on the way home after visiting Solway Aviation Museum. Nice and clean, plenty of tables and attentive staff. Fish was beautiful, not greasy at all, proper chips but not very generous with the mushy peas! Youngest son had kids fish and chips that he was very happy with, Eldest son had battered sausage that he thoroughly enjoyed. With 2x teas and 2 cold drinks, came to £36. Nice as a treat and no washing up.

Pie and chips ok, nothing special. The cafe is clean and the service prompt but what I really couldn't believe was how much we were charged for bread and butter. 75p PER SLICE! Worse still, we had 4 slices!!! £3 for 4 slices of really cheap, poor quality bread and cheap cash n carry marg has to be the biggest rip off I've ever come across when eating out! £3?!???? How can they possibly justify that? Well the waitress couldn't and was extremely embarrassed when we challenged the cost but said she could only apologise. I don't like to frequent places which openly rip customers off so I cannot recommend this place nor will I be returning.

I stopped here to meet my sister and we decided to eat here before going back to my house.I had the Johns place special of haddock, chips and mushy peas, it was really nice the batter was light and nothing was greasy at all. The service was really fast we didn't wait long at all, I will eat here again.

Been there a few times for a sit down fish and chips and haven't been disappointed with either food or service.Pesioners and kids menus at reasoable prices, quick service, clean surroundings, and probably the best fish and chips i have ever had. My nephew was so impressed with his fish he sent a pic to his mates in London to see if it could be bettered, needless to say it couldn't. Lastly, the staff are always very pleasant and helpful, going through the menu if you are not sure whats on.

I Always try to pop into johns place when I'm passing because I know my food will be excellent and punctual,with clean pleasant surroundings and friendly staff.The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because of the price of the drinks with having 2 teenagers sometimes puts at least 5 pounds on the price of the meal ??? E.g £2.40 for monster energy(£1 in Carlisle).

Been meaning to try here for ages and ended up going because the Fish and Chip shops in Silloth were all closed. Although the adult main meals were reasonably priced (some bread and butter included would have been nice- priced at £1.75 as an extra), the kids meals were expensive and did not even include a drink. Lots of other places charging over £5 for kids will include a drink and a simple pudding as well. The lack of music and the fact that there were more staff than customers did not help the atmosphere. Will not go again- too expensive for what we got. Plus fish looked big when it arrived on the plate but it was more batter than fish- quite disappointing.

Passed this plaice (!!) many times and called in today.First class in every respect.If there were any comments they would be:- Some background music would be nice- The puds were a little pricey - but the menu was excellent!The staff were really friendly and could not have been more helpful.People rave about Crosby's in Whitehaven, but this is better - friendlier and cleaner.Well done!
