After a morning at Casswell bay, the cafe team recommmeded Johnnies fish bar. Beautiful fresh flaky cod and delicious chips! Don't know if it was Johnnie who served me, I'm not local, and he gave me directions to a place just up the road, where we could enjoy a view of the sea with them. Perfect fish and chips, brilliant service. Couldn't ask for more..thanks.

Been twice and it’s always very good. Got given the sweet curry sauce by mistake so that was a bit annoying but food is amazing. Best fish n chips in the mumbles

What a place! They serve great fish and chips. Take cash. Keeping other businesses open such as banks, atms and other jobs which people get paid for locally. Oh and lastly they served with a smile on their faces. Beautiful people

Very easily one of the best fish shops in Mumbles!! The shop is immaculate and the staff are very polite and presentable. We had fish and chips on both visits and was not disappointed (especially when you ask for them in paper and loads of salt and vinegar). The place is a little bit difficult to find as it's off the main road on a side street (what3words - fellow.custard.relief) but worth the detour. This fish shop sets the bar at a very standard fair play.

Before we even got to eating the food, we knew we’d give it a 5* review because of how friendly the staff were. Miles was wonderfully kind and brightened our day. He also made our dogs day by giving him a sausage! The food was exceptional - we shared scampi and chips. Excellent value, big portions, super fresh. Glad we had cash as this was a great find in Mumbles!

I took my family here on the first night of the trip and it was a fantastic choice. I grew up on the North Norfolk Coast and my standards for fish and chips are high. The fish is really fresh and the batter melts in your mouth. Chips are perfect - crisp with a soft potato centre. We had some curry sauce and that was delicious. Generous portion sizes (The childrens portion was plenty for my growing youngest and he has a good appetite). Clean plates all around - the sign of a great place to eat. To top it off the staff are lovely. Really friendly to everyone who comes in and hard working - they have to be as it sees a lot of trade.

The fish and chips were delicious and freshly fried. We often find it tricky to find a good halal option near the seaside. However, the friendly staff at Johnnie's went out of their way to cater for our needs and fried the chips in a separate fryer for us. Would highly recommend.

Really busy, but super quick service. Great helpful staff. We went for a large cod and chips, more than enough for a family of 3. Amazing fresh food. I definitely recommend. Be sure to bring cash, card isn't accepted.

Disappointed by the Haddock and Plaice. Was fried skin on and over done. Led to some unhappy stomachs. Unfortunately I was not thrilled with the meal. Also they were cash only which was disappointing but at least there was an ATM in store.

Had a lovely experience at Johnnie's yesterday. Lovely,friendly gang who went out of their way to make a fresh mushy pea fritter for me. Very clean and take out meal was beautiful which we enjoyed with my granddaughter in the local park. Thank you.

I have been going to Johnnies Chip Shop for over 50 years. Different owners, obviously, but always excellent chips, big quantities and wide range of related products. They are renowned as being the chip shop locals use. It is tucked out of the way down the end of a side street, normally very busy (peak times) and definitely not fast food. But it is totally worth the wait for freshly cooked food - never reheated. Fabulous.

Visited on a wet Friday for some lunchtime fish and chips. Staggered to find that in this day and age, this is a CASH ONLY establishment - clearly contactless hasn't reached Mumbles yet...... They have an ATM but it was out of order! We were going to order fish and chips, but ended up only getting chips. Portions were huge, far too big- we only ate about half throwing the rest away. Reasonable quality. Overall disappointing, especially the insistence on cash only.

We have no words!!! My husband can't move and I am just smiling. In my childhood this was our treat in the way home from the beach but living in London, this is still my treat....lush, large portions, friendly, clean, tasty! The best fish and chips in the UK as far as I am concerned. Tucked away in the back streets of Oystermouth...take the time to seek it out.

Best fish and chips ever had. Travel ten miles by 2 buses every week. Amazing food, staff are always friendly and very polite. ALL FOOD COOKED FRESH TO OEDER SO EXPECT A 20/30 MINUTE WAIT FOR YOUR FOOD TO BE COOKED.

Only one person on Friday serving at 1300 lunch time people queuing out of the door waited ages for food,if we had not already paid we would have left!

Top drawer! This is an excellent fish and chip shop, quality batter, fresh succulent fish, the scampi was pretty good too. Cooked to order, and a great welcoming atmosphere from the regulars stopping by as well. It's cash only, (there's a cash machine inside) but don't let that deter you. This is a proper fish and chip shop with all the classics that you don't get from the imitators. If you're making a journey and your nearby, plan a stop. You won't regret it.

We were going to a restaurant but decided to go to johnnys fish and chip shop the chips and rissole was the best ive tasted in ages and the chap that served us was polite and helpful and presented the food to take out well we went to the sea front in mumbles and it was wonderful well done Johnny's will be calling again definitely.

First time using this place. My husband had large chips and I had sausage, chips and curry sauce. 2 young girls (and I think) the owner were serving. Smiles and politeness and ready for a good sport conversation with my husband. The owner thanked us for waiting and the girls were ever so accommodating as we were going to eat outside on the patio/veranda area. The cost of the meals were good value for money and really good portion size. The food was hot and very tasty. We shall be returning to use the eatery and will certainly recommend to anyone who wants a fish and chip supper. Thanks to the team serving (sun 17/09) 2 very happy customers 😁

Tucked away from the main street this is a real hidden gem. Lovely people and great chips. The only downside is it's cash only. There is an ATM inside but it was broken.

Went, just based on the reviews - you won't be disappointed! Can't comment on the fish, but the chips were excellent 👌🏼 we also had kids nuggets & chips meals (which were huge & also come with a free drink) and I thought the chicken/mush pie was also very good (even for a microwaved job) parking is a challenge, but just down the road (before you turn onto the chip-shop street) is underground parking for M&S , just a 2 min walk away. Will def go here again the next time we're in the Mumbles 👍🏼

Just finished what can only be described as an epic fish, chips, mushy peas and curry sauce from Johnnie's. This place may not have a sea front location but as far as my family and I are concerned this is the best chippy there is. Believe me it's worth the (short) walk to get to it. The staff in there were run off their feet but the service was spot on and the food was amazing. Good job it's a couple of hundred miles from Leigh or I'd be skint and about 40 stone lol. If I ever revisit mumbles, I'll defo be going Johnnie's for a chippy tea. Thank you for the best chippy tea ever.

Day trip to Mumbles as part of our south Wales holiday. A local told us about Jonnie's. Off of the main strip but excellent value for money. Really tasty child. Sadly no cheese and onion pasties But highly recomended

Excellent! We had a great experience waiting for our food. The person who seemed responsible for everything was super friendly and even spoke Spanish to my Spanish husband and children. We ate our food along the pier (partly in the rain) and were very happy with our choice. Next time we would order less as portions are massive (we had x3 cod and x2 large chips).

Having read so many great reviews about Johnnies, we thought we would give it a go as we were in the area. Maybe we caught the place on an off day, but the whole impression from start to food was not great. True that, it was quite busy this evening, but food seemed slow to be served. I waited over 20 minutes. At one point there were a dozen cooked fish in boxes ready for serving but no chips. Anyway, had our order of two fish and chips and a fish cake. The fish had bones and was coated in a thick batter than was partially uncooked. The chips, which were small, were very greasy and barely cooked, even though there were lots of them. Massive oil slick. We spent £25 and most of it went in the bin. Maybe this was a one-off, but it's the worst fish and chips we've ever had.

Fantastic food! We had a bit of a wait but only because it was so busy - the very friendly and efficient staff were working flat out. The boss dealt with a difficult customer (not me) with a considerable amount of patience and diplomacy. We had cod and a large chips which was ample for two. The cod was really fresh with a light batter and the chips were perfect. Only slight issue was that they are cash only but they have an ATM actually in the shop!

Visited based on a recommendation and were very happy we did! Little outside seating area had enough room for a pram and a dog, the fish was cooked fresh as were the chips. Chips were the perfect consistency for everyone, with little crispy bits as well as thick and fluffy. The owner was chatting with the regulars making for a great atmosphere for a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and even gifted our dog some sausage which she very much enjoyed!

I have been in Wales for a week and have been longing in anticipation for decent fish and chips..the wait was worth it...fluffy chips and so many !!! Crispy batter with wonderful fish...the gentleman ran after us up the road to give us a sausage he had cut up for my dogs 🐕 !!! Just fab...we ate outside and i wouldn't change a thing...everywhere was spotless...WELL DONE

This is quite possibly the best chippy I've been to! The guy who served us was super friendly and helpful, as visitors on holiday we felt really welcome. There are a few tables outside (under shelter) so we decided to eat there. Our food was brought out fresh, hot and delicious accompanied by bottles of salt and vinegar, ketchup, forks and napkins. After we'd finished they took the time to ask if we'd enjoyed our food (which we had!). The portions are generous and price is good. Highly recommended!

The fish and chips were lovely, all cooked fresh. But the 1 hour + wait for food was absolutely shocking. With the locals getting rody due to the weight left a hostile atmosphere. The bloke behind the serving bar did his best with the little resources he had. Nice gesture to cook scampi and chicken nuggets for people to munch on while they wait, but this was definately the most unorganised chippy I've ever been to

Absolutely incredible lunch yesterday , the most amazing service we’ve ever had (and this includes fine dining restaurants). A special thankyou to the man serving us, possibly the owner, the kindest most genuine lovely person. He brought out 3 large fish with fresh chopped lemon outside to our table, great service !! The fish was freshly cooked to order and absolutely delicious, the crispy thin batter and gorgeous cod. The chips were so tasty and fresh! We wish this was our local chippy , no doubt the best in Wales. We will be back on our next visit to the Gower. Thanks again :)

We travelled from Cardiff bay to visit Athan air museum and decided to visit Mumbles for fish and chips . I looked for the best fish and chips in mumbles and found Johnnies . Although up a side street and up a hill we asked locals for directions we saw this little chippy . Looked very modern , clean and tidy and clear laid out menus . We hoped to eat on the beach but changed our mind as we only had 45 minutes left on our parking ticket . Decided to eat at the shop outside were three small tables . We ordered two cod and chips served in boxes with Chinese curry sauce . It was the most amazing crispy thin batter the cod was moist and very fresh and huge portions size . It was delicious . We wished we had more time to sit by the sea and relax more . The girls were very good and the manager was very friendly and asked if we enjoyed the food . We highly recommend this shop it’s brilliant . Best fish and chips ever no grease and very fresh . Well done . Thank you

Wow! The freshest fish, chips and veggie burgers. A big thank you to Miles, the lovely gentleman who cooked our food and the team who were kept very busy with customer orders. Yes you have to queue, we turned up at 17:00 when it opened and there were already a dozen people in front of us. The fish is cooked to order, which I love, I like to know my fish is freshly cooked and not sat around for goodness knows how long. Despite being busy, Miles checked our food was good, as we sat on the tables outside to eat. There is a reason a fish and chip shop, that’s off the main beachfront, has a good reputation and that’s quality and service. Thank you, we will definitely return when we come back to Wales.

Despite being hard pressed because they’d had a couple of mahooosive orders and had a huge Q, the team kept positive & polite, kept everyone informed, apologised for the wait and produced some of the best fish and chips we’ve had in ages. Fabulous work...

Called in after they were due to close, didn’t realise the time. Our daughter is Autistic and was expecting Fish & Chips, I wish I taken the guys name because he was super considerate and helpful, putting fish in the fryer long after he needed...

They don’t accept cash, there is much better food and ambience down the road anyway.

Went tonight on recommendation,wish I,d travelled 3 miles to my usual chippy in Argyle St,my chips were green so maybe all the staff could do with a health and hygiene refresher course, I won't be going back even dick Bartons is better
