Lovely location, building and outdoor area. I used the car park whilst doing the Anchor Church Trail and popped in for a pint after. The service from James was superb, not just to me, but consistently from what I observed, I’d say the best I’ve personally witnessed, kind & personable. Great pint as well, would recommend.

Very disappointed , visited several times in past always happy with our visit Booked a table for 6 in the name of Atkinson 4 of our family had travelled from Lincolnshire we booked couple of weeks ago asked if we could have a table in the main bar area ,instead we was allocated in a small room crammed on two tables which we pulled together a little hence nobody could get out with out everyone moving , ordering wasn’t straight forward you had to tell them what meats you required , why if your paying for a large or small plate !! why change the system that worked well previously !! Carvery was ok although not as good as in the past Yorkshire puddings burnt and the Turkey was tough !! Sadly we won’t be visiting again I’m sure there are better places to go, where you’re not shoved in a tiny room just so you can get maximum people seated .

Had Sunday lunch yesterday and noticed a marked difference from usual. Roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds were burnt. Cauliflower cheese was awful, very watery and no taste. Hope this was a one off as we come quite often. Even the crumble pudding was burnt. All this and a hefty price increase for beef. Need to do better John Thompson or you will lose business.

My first time at the John Thompson with my lady friend, we had the most beautiful beef dinner ,the staff were very helpful and polite and the atmosphere was absolutely great, we cannot fault this place, we sat by the lovely fire, and the cleanliness was second to none, we recommend this place to any one and we give 5 stars all round.

We came here to try the weekday lunchtime carvery after reading good reviews, and we were not disappointed! At £13.50pp it was priced favourably and had a choice of 2 meats although we were informed that it’s usually 1. We went for a mix of pork and beef which was spot on, combined with a Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roast potatoes, and a great choice of perfectly cooked vegetables, and tasty gravy, made for a cracking meal. The draught Bass was perfect too so all good in my book! Our only gripe was that we were seated near a window and as the weather was hovering around freezing it was a bit cool, but really that is our fault as we couldn’t be bothered to ask to be moved. On our way out we noticed the snug room with a roaring fire so should have gone in there! We will definitely be returning in the near future for another lovely carvery👍 We will certainly be back

Very kindly accommodated a group of 18 of us without any notice so we were very grateful for that - there’s where my two stars come in. But it quickly became clear they didn’t massively want us to stay. Despite the pub being more or less empty for the whole time we were there, they said they couldn’t make us burgers, wiping out half the menu. That was fair so we let it slide. Then I asked if just one of us wanted a burger whether we could get one. They still said no. They didn’t do anything to keep us around - didn’t offer more drinks and didn’t offer dessert. Found them a bit condescending in how they spoke to us. Food was fine. If I’m honest I’d rather they’d said they couldn’t accommodate us and asked us to go elsewhere as it was clear that’s what they really wanted.

Our walking group called there one sunny Saturday afternoon recently. I would have expected a nice country pub with commanding views over the Trent Valley to be jam packed on a sunny weekend but it was almost deserted? The staff were pleasant and friendly and the place has a good choice of beers, so I couldn't understand why it was virtually empty.

Super service! We went on a Sunday that means cavery only on the menu, however, we wanted something lighter. As they were quite quiet they suggested a beef sandwich. I was expecting a couple of slices of beef, what we got was a mini feast! We will go back for sure. N.B. I made a mess of the gravy pot!

Having not been here for a long while, 4 sixty somethings decided to go out for lunch. On arrival we were able to sit at our preferred table and ordered drinks, then food. We all chose the carvery which is served Wednesday to Friday, we found it very tasty and above all hot. We were asked twice if the meal was ok and we had no complaints, it’s not the cheapest but the food was worth every penny.

Really disappointed. Heard good things about roast dinners on Sundays but unfortunately we went today and did not have a good experience. Very expensive and not a lot of food so not good value for money. Waited a long time for drinks. They brought the food out and then took it back as it was for the wrong table. We Waited an hour between starter and main. When it finally came roast potatoes did not seem fresh, chicken seemed as though it was boiled rather than roasted not much flavour either, beef was stringy, burnt Yorkshire pudding, half a carrot, not enough veg for the table, cauliflower cheese was not very nice I could go on. Puddings were better but still not great. We spent over £35 per person and do not think it was worth it. When paying we said we weren’t happy and the server just apologised and said have a nice day. Service was not good at all. Will not be returning.

My wife and I have just been to Jaipur for the 1st time.As we have moved from Birmingham we found indian restaurants & take aways locally a big disappointment. We have tried a number of places & yet to find 1 that gets to anywhere near the standard that we had become accustomed to, until now! We ordered a chicken pakora to share as our starters and we were certainly not disappointed with it the chicken was as tender as you could wish for the batter being very light & fluffy although the onion salad could be a little more plentiful the mango chutney was rich & mint dip had a little sharpness but absolutely lovely. For our mains I chose my usual chicken tikka pathia the sweetness &richness of flavour was just as it should be but not overly hot i in the past ask for the spice to be toned down a little but on this occasion i didn't bother, while my wife chose the butter chicken that was as smooth as silk with no spice just how she likes it with a vegetable pilau rice of which there could have been a little more & a peshwari naan that was so light & delicious it could easily be the highlight had it not been for the quality of the rest of the meal. The food was amazing as was the welcome by the service we received, if I could say an area to be improved upon it would be that the ladies & gents toilets were very cold but all in all a great experience. We will return with friends sometime soon. Thankyou to all at Jaipur
