Small fish and the chips were blanched yellow tinged tripe , sorry guys there are far better chips shops around in Belfast.

A truly unique and "real" fish and chips restaurant. Not flashy or glitzy, just great, delicious food and real atmosphere.

I wanted to try this famous Belfast fish and chips shop for a long time. I finally made it the other week. They were very busy and it took a good ten minutes to receive a menu. Once I received a menu my order was taken swiftly and arrived within five minutes. The coca cola that I had ordered was forgotten about but arrived once I enquired about it. I was shocked at how small the fish was and how few chips you get on a tiny plate. The curry sauce was fruity which I personally don't like, had I known that I'd not have ordered it. The fish was ok. Batter was super well done, not to my taste. The fish was not super fresh. The chips too were overdone in my opinion, with lots of little hard scraps. For the price I don't think it was great value for money sadly. I'd struggle to recommend this fish and chip spot to be honest and don't think I'll be back. Very sad.

This place came recommended to us by a tour guide we had in Belfast. We arrived at opening time and it’s always a good sign when the locals are lining up. Everything we ate was fantastic. The fish batter was crispy and the fish light and moist. Chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Curry sauce was delicious and great with the chips. But those onion rings - WOW. They are like rings of roast onion in crispy batter. Delicious. Service and attention by the staff was perfect. Highly recommend this for a quiet, local lunch.

Disappointing… arrived with my family at 5.00 as orders stop at 5.30 and was told they had a ‘private party’ and would not serve us. Very obvious this was not true as there were people in their cars eating in the car park and separate families still coming out of the place. You have lost a family of loyal customers. Longs…maybe change your closing time instead of lying?

Had a fish supper and pastie supper never again fish was half cooked watery as hell. Chips over cooked full of eyes . Pastie was undercooked again chips overcooked. Hopefully the gulls and pigeons enjoyed a free lunch. Used this chippy years ago food was to die for .most certainly not now.

John Longs is a bona fide Belfast Institution, and it's easy to see why. The food is really good but I was massively disappointed by the amount of chips we got with our orders. My Dad and I ordered the fish goujons meal deal which came with a side, bread and butter for £11. There was tons of fish but legitimately about half a scoop of chips to go with it. They serve meals for sit in on small plates to make it seem like you're getting loads. Service wasn't great, we got seated, and it took quite awhile for us to even get given menus. My friend ordered a fish supper but they only brought a fish to him, so we then had to order the chips separately, which they charged £4 for. While I'm glad to have finally gotten round to trying Longs, I don't think I'd rush back.

A real treasure for Belfast, Longs is an institution and the freshly made suppers, light crispy batter, chunky chips and the lovely staff are as excellent as ever. 5 stars all the way!

Best chippy in belfast. The fish & chips are legendary. Chicken burgers are awesome too. Staff are always incredibly friendly. This place is a Belfast institution. The last of places like it. If theres a better place to get fish and chips on this island I'd be surprised.

Went year's ago and was hard to beat, went last week and was the worst have had in a long time. Battered sausages were soggy and must have been bought in frozen, not the usual batter you would get from a chippy, a few people I was with had the fish and they said that it was just ok.

Great fish and chips served hot and fresh! If this is what you want then go to Longs! You can take away or sit in. I recommend that you sit in to soak up the atmosphere of this restaurant which is a real throwback to the past. There's nowhere else like it in Belfast. Both the exterior and the interior of this building have a certain charm and character which is specific to Belfast. With that in mind and the promise of an excellent fish supper, Longs should be on the bucket list of any food lover!

No frill fast food style fish & chips restaurant. The fish & chips are good for the price but nothing special.

It was very easy to access the place. Only a 4 minute walk from Grand Central Station's Grosvenor Road entrance. The serving staff were friendly, and we had an enjoyable time there.

Proper old school chip shop. The fish here is brilliant, cooked to perfection. Staff are lovely.

Brought family who were visiting for Christmas. It's a Belfast institution, and it was worth visiting. The fish in particular was outstanding. Delicious, crunchy batter encasing a soft, flavoursome piece of cod.

Well, I didn't like it but I understand that other people like this fish and chips, I'm sorry I don't.

Was in this place recently for the first time in about 20 years. Ordered a Chicken fillet burger for takeaway. Service is spot on, all the staff are lovely but they spend more time chatting and gossiping rather than focusing on their timings, because when I got home 5 mins later with my burger, the batter and bread is soaking wet! It's not greasey wet so I don't know what is happening here. £11.10 for that, rotten. Will never be back.

Off the beaten path, very local. Super friendly staff and the best fish and chips I've ever had! I highly recommend it!

Doesn't look too inviting from the outside but don't let this put you off. Good number of booths/tables inside. Staff acknowledged us as soon as we entered. Take a seat and you'll soon be handed a menu and your order taken. The fish and chips were excellent the only issue was the small plates, it was hard to keep the chips on the plate. Cheerful service and the food was cooked fresh.

Have turned up at 5pm on a Saturday on two different occasion to be advised it is closed but supposed to be open until 6pm. No real reason.

A real throw back in a good way, inside very classic old school chip shop. Everything freshly prepared and cooked in front of you. Go early as they sell out towards the end of the day!

Best fish supper in Belfast, and reasonably priced too

Day off for appointment, so decided to nip into John Longs chip shop. Was not disappointed, as service from entering the door to being seated, really polite and courteous. And of course had to order the main thing, fish with chips. The fish is light and well fillited, and it is large, but the plate is not over large, but saying that, it is the taste and texture of the fish which was and is delightful and delicious. It is a full stomach along with the chips and the peas. Difinetly worth the visit, so call in and taste for yourself.

Food excellent, the batter is so light and fish so fresh. Could probably do with another pair of hands on Friday afternoon/evening. With the new station opening also, they will be more busy in the future I'd say. Atmosphere is good, but space is limited, they could fill the place easily at twice the size..but i dont have the answers admittedly. Victims of their own success. the staff are stars!

Unbelievable went for a sit in at 5.00 as orders stop at 5.30 but was told they had a party coming in and would not serve us. Then they told us they had no fish left anyway. Yet they were cooking fresh ones. What a joke is longs. We went to the Captain's table in Glengormley and had a lovely sit in Fresh fish and chips. Longs you lost our custom for good.

I always takeaway from here but today I sat in with my wife and two kids. Food was amazing, not a phone in sight and people sitting of all ages eating and chatting. Staff can't do enough for you and are all so pleasant.

Unfortunately dine in was closed due to a private party, and also, they had ran out of fish... But these things happen, and the staff were so lovely about it. All was forgiven with the first bite tho, the chips are outstanding, which should be a given for a chippy, but unfortunately isn't. And the fish goujons were also crispy, tasty and excellent value. Can see why Longs have made the headlines recently, it's fantastic.

Magical place best fish&chips in UK

We went as a family to this traditional Belfast fish and chip shop reported as among the best in the city and I must say the reviews don't lie! The fish is really fresh and good, the frying is not heavy and the doses are very generous (as seen in the photo). I struggled to finish it alone! Don't be fooled by the external appearance of the building, apparently unkempt, at John Long's you will find excellent fish and chips (but not only) and attentive, fast and welcoming service.

Have called to John's a number of times, actually each time we visit Belfast we try to make it along. Recent visit was at lunch time and had to wait for a seat to become available, only a few minutes as customers were not hogging tables. Very, very busy around 1PM but we got a seat and the usual fish supper very quickly. As usual the staff were lovely and chatty, and the food delicious. Only drawback was that they seem to have stopped serving batch bread, standard sandwich pan these days! Personally I would try to avoid the peak lunch hour as I felt I should finish quickly to allow other people waiting to have the table, as others had done for me. Definitely worth a visit, delicious food, quick service, lovely staff and a real glimpse into 'The way we were' And they have takeaway too if you are in a hurry!!

Called in today for family lunch, we all got seated , and served quickly, served our order it was delicious fish n chips, tea and soft drinks, all in all a great visit, and very nice staff too.highly recomend.

Had this one recommended to us by taxi driver. You walk in and are spoken too straight away. It was like walking into yesteryear. Great set up in booth's and most importantly good food. Our fish was a generous size and beautifully cooked. Good value for money. Recommended

The fish wasn't cooked enough. The plates were to small, when u went to eat the food was falling off the plate. The lady who served us was lovely.

Very quaint Mom & Pop type of establishment. The food was great, and the service was quick and friendly. Highly recommend coming here when you are in town.

Recently went due to recommendations with 2 grandchildren after morning out very disappointed food poor quality chips hard not able to eat girl serving dropped half meal on floor very expensive for what we received my granddaughter said should have went to McDonald's when she saw Bill unfortunately we will not return

By atmosphere, I mean a truly local joint where you see all walks of life coming in for quick and fabulous fish and chips and onion rings!

We haven't been in over 25 years, the service and food was excellent, it had the same great atmosphere just like our last visit. The food was excellent and competitively priced. It was well worth the visit. They now have limited marking which they never had on our last visit. Give it a try you will not be disappointed, we were lucky when we arrived there was an empty table but we observed the wait was not long.❤️❤️

We visited to check out the Derry Girls filming location. Staff was very kind and the vegetarian burger and curry chips were delicious.

I loved the cury with my fries and I really enjoyed the super greasy fish fried up fresh. My meal was swimming in grease on my plate. I patted it down a bit with my tissues. It was too greasy but I still really liked it. I was excited to be eatting in such a long standing establishment.

Something is going wrong in this chippy now. The last time i was in, i had the best fish. Just had the worst fish and chips. The chips were uneatable, and the fish batter was very greasy. I was hungry, and i ate it much to my regret. A lady beside me didn't eat hers. It was empty on a Saturday, so i think the word is out john longs is not keeping up their standards

I was only in for a take away fish supper and an extra fish. Very disappointed! The fish was all burnt greasy batter and very little fish.The chips were pail and also greasy This is not the Longs I remember as a teenager.The quality is not there. First time back in many years and it will be my last.

Thanks to my fiancé's friends recommendation the fish and chips were delicious . Very crispy batter and furthermore the chips were crispy too. I am not a big fan of chips but they were scrumptious. I am not surprised celebrities go there. Great customer service definitely recommend it and will definitely go there next time we are in Belfast.

After recent fish and chips losses, such as classic chippies closing or standards going down, and hearing people of all ages talking about this spot, I decided to give it a try, thinking it would rekindle my love of fish suppers from my teenage years. The decor inside was nice, like a throwback to an old fish supper cafe from the 50s, and the chips were amongst the nicest I've had since travelling to Belgium. Soft on inside, firm but not too crispy on the outside. However, my positive comments end there, and this is why I can only give this spot 3 stars. The fish fell apart when I lifted it which is a telling sign, and it didn't taste of the sea, it was 2-3 days old. However the batter was fresh, and fish wasn't frozen, which was a saving grace. And it was cheaper than most other places at £11. Also, the service was poor. We had to wait for ages before our order was taken, and no water was brought down to the table despite requests. Whilst I understand that spots like this may have more old people than a hospital ward or care home day room, spending their pensions to keep their childhood spots alive; to make matters worse, there was an old man sitting at the next table who stank of cigarettes and kept coughing over our conversation, which was a further let down. This isn't France! I regret to have to give this review. Aside from the geriatric crowd, I understand the issues I've listed are common across lots of chippies with current economic pressures, and fishing quotas.

Best place in Belfast for fish and chips.

I visited this place on a trip to Belfast. It is centrally located and has a good space to dine in or you can get takeaway. I had the fish supper which is haddock. It was delicious and fried to order. I recommend for an authentic fish supper in a centrally located chippy in the city of Belfast.

Very disappointed in Longs. Got the order wrong twice, and the chips were rotten. It's definitely not as good as it use to be. Quality has went downhill badly. Won't be back.

An absolute gem of a find! I opted for my favourite: Pastie and Chips - it was excellent, so good, I bought some uncooked ones to take home for a later date! The chips were excellent and even the bread and butter was traditional to Belfast. Great warehouse style interior with original retro booths! You definitely will not be disappointed!

Oh my goodness, this place has been on my bucket list for years. I live in the USA and when I cam home this Christmas, I had to try John Longs. I was not disappointed, beautiful fried fish with no batter residue. Chips beautiful dry, meaty and fried to perfection.

Food very disappointing have always enjoyed the fish and chips in longs never had a bad thing to say about it but the fish was pure batter and chips uneatable very sad as it was always the best food in Belfast won’t be back
