JDs Pie and Mash in Tendring

Since reopening and new ownership this place is so much better. Pie is yummy and staff are great :) I would say Tendering now have a good place to go for a decent pie and mash meal! They also do salt beef bagels (Although too expensive @ £7.50 they are delicious) A Must try if you are in clacton!

Cant understand these reviews. I was brought up eating pie. Mash and liquor twice a week in London. Let me tell you. This place is as good as any. Come here at least 2-3 times a month and I drive 45 min just to have the pie and mash. Well done jds. Keep up the great work. Just wish you would open on Sundays

Visit this place a lot and the reason being is that it is easily Clacton’s best pie and mash shop. Normally get it to take away, when getting home the food it’s still very hot and enjoyable. Always busy in there when collecting my food. Lady serving always polite. Only thing that winds me up is when they have a holiday and they shut….😃

Very bland personally wouldn't come again very cheap but that's what's to be expected for crap I have tried a few pie and mash and this was horrible

Visited this shop for lunch today. Have eaten in Kelly’s, Robins, Cook’s, Menzies, Arments and Scott’s. if you find yourself in Clacton and like pie and mash, do drop in - you won’t be disappointed!

We had a lovely day out in Clacton on Sea, 6 of us had a meal and it was great, the staff were friendly and the food was spot on!

Visited a few times now and it’s the best We have tried another one not far from this one in town and this beats it hands down, so so clean very hygienic very COVID aware with track n trace in place. All I ask the owners is to do a hot small pot of plain parsley sauce as I’m allergic to eel juice in sauce you have Or can you get a pot of Bisto parsley sauce granules from Tesco. as i will ask when I next go in Gravy isn’t the same guys but in future will pick J D’s for pie n mash. Visited Clacton from London recently, and thought I'd sample the local Pie and Mash shops as I normally do whenever I find one in the area I'm visiting! Born and Bred in the heart of East London, and surrounded by the big boys within this industry, its always good to try out other establishments outside of the smoke, and salute them for keeping this age old tradition alive, and JD's is no exception. Nice friendly staff was a good start. It's never gonna be Manzes, Maureen's or Arments, but it was a ok for sure! Pies were a smaller than I'm used to, with a slightly different taste, but still very nice, mash a bit lumpier, although again very nice, along with the liquor with a really nice parsley taste, although a little thicker than normal!! It was more expensive than the London boys, but I have found that in all the other out of London shops I've visited over the years. Tables were well spaced out, which in the current environment isn't a bad thing!! So to sum up, would I go back to JD's if I was in the Clacton area, ABSOLUTELY I would. Thanks JD's 👍

Parked out side the pie and mash to go to the bank Mum said she fancied pie and mash So we decided to go to whites in Walton like we usually do, while I was in the bank mum couldn’t help but notice the amount of people that were going in and out Jds I said shall we try it when I got back, We wasn’t sure then I said to mum come on let’s see what it’s like, so In we go Looked lovely and clean found a table then went up and ordered, she came over with the tea 1st that ticked the boxes, then the dinner came over, it looked absolutely lush, I tried the liquor 1st Beautiful 👌 then I tried the mash now I’m not a lover of mash usually and it was bloody lovely, then I’m thinking that’s 3/4 the pie will most probably be horrible but as I bit into it to taste it was bloody gorgeous I just couldn’t believe it Top Marks all round, staff were lovely and friendly as well, I was bought up on Cooke’s pie and mash east London But this is a bloody close 2nd to what I have tried Since I’ve moved down here, it knocks whites into a tin hat, can’t wait for our next visit Thank you Xxx

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime with family. Restaurant has a five star hygiene rating. Food and service was very good. Excellent value for money.

Visited today, lovely Pie, Mash and Gravy. £3.70 each a real bargain, would definately recommend! Word of warning though, 1 mash is plenty unless you are starving then go for 2. Didnt try the puddings but they looked lovely as well.

Went to JD's today, it had just opened as my wife & I walked past, there was a small que outside the pie and mash shop. We went in ordered our food. Pleased to say it was one of the best pie and mash shops I've been to for a long time, we both really enjoyed the food, will definitely use JD's again also recommend to friends to use. I feel it is much better value for money than Whites pie and mash shop in Walton, also the mash was much better as were the pies.

Yes it is pie and mash but nowhere near as good as any of east Londons pie shops plus its a tight squeeze when inside.could have been a bit cheaper considering the quality of the food plus not what you could call a substantial meal.also the decor needs an update its like going back in time when you enter the shop,they need dragging into the 21st centuary

I do like my pie, mash n liquor, if its the traditional way. And this place is well worth a visit, if you come from London. I will keep going there over n over again

A great little place pie and mash is amazing and the liquor is good. Also the sausage mash and onions were perfect. Very clean and staff are lovely. Certainly making this a regular place to eat.

Always good, never had a bad meal in here, Pie's Mash & Liquor always fresh, good puddings and a Mug of Tea or Coffee, It's Proper Pie & Mash. Tried others locally and nothing compares to JD's.

Best tasting pie and mash in Clacton, much better than the shop around the corner from here. Staff are always friendly and helpful when I go in there too. Prices are cheap and is great for a cheap lunch. Highly recommended.

Hi everyone Went today for lunch with wife after recommendation but it was not as nice as was told but I ate it and was value for money pie had too much gravy and spoilt the taste of liquor mash was perfect

Just to say lovely food bit pricey but I wish you would do plain parsley sauce without eel juice. I’m allergic to fish If I hadn’t asked id of been ill. And had a reaction in the shop

Every-time Im in Clacton, it's like a bad habit I can't leave without going to get Pie and Mash from JD's Pie & Mash shop! It's delicious!

The food on our visit didn't taste fresh. The pastry was poor and rubbery and the potato was dry and thick, the liquor was good and the staff were friendly.

This is without doubt the best restaurant in the whole of Clacton, well if you like pie and mash that is. Very, very tasty, clean and did i say tasty?

Good service but have tasted better. Liquer was very watery. Not many places to park would be better going nearer 3pm to find parking

Fabulous bit of grub as usual at JD's cannot recommend highly enough. And at these prices you just can't go wrong. Free street parking all around also helps.

This was recommended highly by friends, and we weren't disappointed. Does what it says, proper pie and mash, just as it used to be, with chilli vinegar to splash. Stewed and jellied eels too, if you like 'em. Big mugs of tea and a buzzing...

No había estado aquí por más de dos años pero decidí darle otra oportunidad cuando el puré Tarta romero calle cerrada durante 2 semanas. Todo era fantástico, las tartas, licores y puré de muy alta calidad. Pastel de puré como cabe esperar es la única opción, pero la principal adición de varias tartas con flan, etc. es genial para el postre. Establecimiento está limpio, el servicio estupendo y barato, que es una ventaja.

Como alguien que ama y compra vine aquí tarta tarta y puré para nuestra cena y el pastel era un poco demasiado salada nos encanta una buena torta de East End, así que sé lo que como debe ser.

Haven't had pie and mash since I was a kid at school. Made a disappointing visit to a nearby establishment where both pie and mash were microwaved to within an inch of their lives. Visited JD's this time and I was more than pleased. Pie straight out of an warmer, mash out of a warming pan and liquor likewise. Not a microwave in sight. Delicious pie. Mash had no lumps. Couldn't have asked for more. Mug of tea to top it all off and the lot for under £4. Beats a panini or whatnot any day. Will definitely be back.

This Pie and Mash shop is clean, tidy and busy. The food is hot and excellent. All the old traditional pie and mash favourites are here.

Lovely friendly staff, exceptionally fast service, the pies are of a reasonable standard, but the mash is very good. It is the liquor which sets this place apart from the rest, full of flavour, authentic recipe and plentiful. Prices are exceptionally cheap, under £3 for 1 pie & 1 mash.

First time for my kids to have pie and mash in a proper pie and mash shop. They loved it; as did I. Such a simple but tasty concept.

Having tried Pie and mash all over the the country I can say that JD's is up there with the best. I will definitely be a frequent visitor.

Lived in Clacton for 18 years, love this restaurant. Very clean, loo on hand, very reasonably priced. Children well catered for. Lived in Norfolk for over 6 years now and the first thing we do when we go back to visit is have Pie & Mash. Looking forward to our next visit :)

My daughter and son-in-law drove up from East Sussex to try it. The pies were terrible, ground beef and I mean ground floating in a pastry base, The Liquor was watery however the mash passes the test. I have ate in Pie and Mash all over London and the South Coast and this was the pits.

As someone brought up on authentic East End Pie 'n' Mash back in the 50s, I can honestly say this is the best I have tasted since leaving London 50 years ago. I try out Pie & Mash shops wherever I go as to me it is the best food on the planet. At last have found a shop in JDs that matches the real taste. The pies are perfect. So is the mash and the liquor come to that. Very friendly atmosphere as well. Perfect.

This shop serves great Pie N Mash in the old tradition. Had a meal there today and the Pie, the mashed potato and the Liquor were all tasty. A little chilli vinegar added the authentic taste of the East End of London. Nice friendly people serving and a busy shop shows its a good place to visit. Also had a 5 out of 5 for hygiene from the Council displayed. At £2.60 for a Pie and Mash its a value for money lunch. Drinks and desserts were also available. well done JDs.

Would You Adam and Eve it? This shop serves nice pie and mash meals. It is consistently good both in quality and value. The food is served hot and with a smile. Hot drinks are available and so are desserts. I see they even offer a vegetarian pie now. Another satisfying visit. Keep up the good work!

We were wandering aimlessly around Clacton town one cold and windy day in October and by chance we came across JDs pie and mash, it is easy to walk past this unassuming little place, but I was intrigued by the title of the place. I have to say up front that, It is not posh, I am the type of person that will love to stop for a truckers breakfast at a greasy spoon; as much as put on the finery to partake in a seven course taster menu at the latest celebrity eatery. It brought back memories of my now long departed Mother saying to me that she was not going to go in to that "grotty little place".So I went in not knowing what to expect, it was clean & tidy, not very big but there was a spare table, the menu is on a wall board by the counter and it offered:Single Pie & Single MashSingle Pie & Double MashDouble Pie & Single MashDouble Pie & Double MashWe asked what type of pies they have and were informed that they had Minced beef and onion.....So we all went for the single pie & single mash, we were then asked if we wanted gravy or liquor, I apologised for my ignorance as I was unaware what liquor was, so the lady poured some of this liquor into a bowl for us to sample, I could tell you what it was like but that would take away part of the enjoyment of visiting this place, needless to say we all chose the liquor over the gravy and we were informed that it tastes even better with vinegar (two types of vinegar are on the table, malt & Chilli flavoured malt)The meals arrived and I would say a good portion size, though many of our fellow diners were having larger portions ours were adequate for us, we all cleared our plates and chose to have desert, there was a small selection of fruit based pies on offer or a couple of traditional English steamed puddings, all available with custard and/or ice cream.To sum up this place, I cannot wait to go back there next time we are in Clacton I may even make a diversion there at some point. There is a vegetarian pie on offer which we did not try so cannot offer comment but the mince & onion pie is top notch.I would absolutely recommend that everyone gives this place a try.

came down in may in clacton heard about the pie and mash and seen a pie and mash cafe it was closed came down in oct and it was open and this was first pie and mash iv eaten in a pie and mash cafe it was brillent and exllent nosh

was recommended by a friend so gave it a try as we normally travel to walton, we were very happy we did, the shop was very clean, the pie and mash was excellent and the price is the best ive ever seen £2.60 for a single pie and mash with liquor they also serve gravy. we will not be travelling to walton anymore...

Me and my husband moved down this way a few months ago and bring a lover of pie and mash on a Saturday we have tried a few. We have been here a couple of times but will not be returning. First time wasn't nice at all but we thought it maybe a bad day and me and my husband decided to give it another try. The pie and mash is tasteless! Will defiantly not be returning

Saw this place on trip adviser and it doesn't disappoint.£4.35 2 pie 1mash.Even does vegetable pies.Went in just after opening and already people in there.Will definitely visit when in the area.Nice clean place with great customer service.

As a pie and mash fanatic I have visited many shops but JDs must be the best, spotlessly clean, beautifully cooked food, welcoming staff and amazing value for money. They also provide excellent alternatives for any uninitiated companions.

We did a 150 mile round trip on the hottest day on record to sample JDs pie and mash and it was well worth it.The pies were cooked to perfection and the mash we believe had a secret ingredient, we can say without doubt this is the finest pie and mash around and we are able to say that having in excess of 20 + pie and mash establishments under our belt, or over our belt, haha.The staff were friendly, the parking was easy and the premises was spotless, and the cost was unbelievably cheap, what more can we say.This is a must visit.Travelling Pie-men.

Great little restaurant could almost be back in London authentic taste good value for money.will certainly go back again down fall is they are only open at lunchtime

Took our 18 month for his 1st pie & mash. We will be returning! Perfect service, lady helpfully cutting the pie to cool it, one of the few places with a Highchair. Excellent value for great quality - yum :)

Good old fashioned pie and mash shop with great tasting food. Authentic liquor and tasty pies. Friendly people serving and made to feel welcome. This shop is worth a visit if you are in Clacton and want a taste of the real East End of London.

This was my third visit to this establishment. Now I can't claim to be an expert on Pie, mash and liquor but my partner and dining companion is from the East End and assures me this is the real deal. I love it. The place is spotless. The staff brisk and efficient. The atmosphere is welcoming. I didn't have a dessert on this visit but I did on a former visit and it was delicious. I would have liked one this time but I was just too full. Oh yes and they do a grand mug of tea.

As an Eastender now living overseas, I do like a good pie & mash when I head back to the UK. JD's did not disappoint.Typical simple decor, simple menu. Excellent Pies, Mash & Liquor.... Would happily recommend.

A bit of true eastend in Clacton . Never tried Liquor before but this was very good, quite a tasty pie just the right size for lunch, and served with mash the shape of an ice cream scoop, sat outside on lovely day, a shame the coffee was so bad but can't get it all right. suggest you try it with a can of lemonade instead. Good value for money, won't break the bank.

Moved out of London several years ago and spoilt for choice for Pie n Mash shops but I have to say it is the best one in Essex

Went here with local friends for late lunch. My first experience of a Pie and Mash 'shop'. Spotlessly clean. Extremely good value. Open from 11.00 - 3.00 p.m. only, but seems busy all through this period. Friendly staff.
