Izakaya Ume Japanese Restaurant in Tewkesbury

Not sure what to expect as neither of us had eaten at a Japanese restaurant before. Found in- house menu easy to understand and we were with friends who knew Japan, so made some good suggestions. We liked everything we tried (wide variety from menu). The sashimi was wonderfully fresh and tasty and everything was beautifully presented. The restaurant was quiet as it was early (7-ish) and the service was relaxed but not slow. Excellent introduction and look forward to going back.

We ordered the seafood noodles for takeaway . And when got home had chicken noodles . Look at your orders before leaving .

We booked a table for two. Ordered our meal. With drinks beware drinks are expensive x ordered starter and mains. Slow service for food so we decided to take main home x waitress told me it was exactly what we ordered but it wasn’t .just beware that’s all what I am saying.

This is an amazing spot for anyone looking for a good bite for lunch. Unlike fine Asian restaurants this is purely Japanese and is NOT westernised.

Had a delicious meal here. Everything was fresh and cooked to order. They were very busy so the items come when ready but that was perfect for us as you can really relax and enjoy each dish and the dining experience. The food portions are very generous and really good quality. Delicious Gyoza. Presentasion of the sushi was top tier. We even had a dish that came on a flamimg plate. We are planning on going back asap.

Would thoroughly recommend! We ordered lots of appetisers, then mains, sides and sushi. We enjoyed everything we had, so tasty and delicious and we thought it was very reasonably priced too for 6 of us. I didn't take pictures of all the food as too busy eating but I did take a few. Friendly lady serving us as well Will definitely return 😊

Wow! Great food. Amazing service and a great range of authentic food choices. I told them before that one of our group was celebrating her birthday and they brought out a surprise cake and played HAPPY BIRTHDAY over the speakers. Definitely will return. Highly recommended!

Great place for lunch. Me and my daughter and her grandma came neither of them knew anything about sushi or anything Japanese. The Livy waiters helped us and we ended haveing lots of new things including 3 bobas 1 for each we loved this place definitely a great place to have lunch / dinner or just a takeout boba or meal.

This restaurant far exceeded our expectations. All the food that was meant to be hot was. Superb quality. It’s up there with a well loved Japanese restaurant in Cheltenham. The octopus balls were amazing. Really recommend.

Very good Japanese food. The seared Tuna starter was amazing, next time we go we are going to order one each. The prices are reasonable and the food is very fresh.

My favourite restaurant ever. Tewkesbury is soo lucky to have this. I love the food best sushi in the whole of gloucestershire and cute and cosy resteraunt. Really worth a visit please support this lovely resteraunt.

Visited for the first time and will definitely return soon! We enjoyed both appetizers and main courses. Food was perfect quality and staff extremely polite and welcoming. Loved it.

Lovely restaurant with really great sushi and we had some delicious gyoza. The staff are also really welcoming and nice.

Fabulous food with authentic flavours. A real Gem in Tewksbury and a must visit the Okonomyaki is to die for ! Will without a doubt be back !

Lovely little restaurant, great food and service, particularly enjoyed the sushi and yakatori, would recommend, only 2 mins walk from the camp site and offer takeaway

This is the best restaurant in Tewkesbury which has too many poor curry houses. It’s very authentic and we have been there many times. Drinks are a bit limited especially the wine list which they could improve.

Anyone who enjoys Sushi will not be disappointed at Izakaya ume restaurant. Warm welcome and comfortable setting, excellent selection of rolls and other choices, my personal selection was the Sushimi boat, the two friends I was with were blown away by the choices. Bonus for me was the availability of non alcoholic beer, Will definitely be going frequently

Visited with friends who are all familiar with Japanese food and other cuisines, the overall experiense was noy particularly enjoyable. They are craming tables to increase covers at the expence of the dining experience for customers, service was OK but once again did nothing to make the evening enjoyable. The menu is at first extensive to read but is just dishes offered with the various options so choice is not as wide as seems . The food ordered was ok but no great portions are extremely small for the prices charged. we left somwhat hungry and feeling ripped off both food and drinks wise. Overall we cannot recommend to others to visit.

Absolutely loved this. Sushi was really great, fab selection, great boats. Really tasty food. Staff are super friendly too and helpful if you aren't too used to ordering Sushi. We will definitely be coming back for sure.

I've only eaten Japanese food in England so I don't know if it's authentic, but it's certainly different and absolutely delicious. We loved the Tewkesbury Roll.

Once was enough. Seriously. I’ve been eating Japanese food for the last 30years, in the UK and Japan. I think I’m pretty much an expert at eating Japanese food. I’ve eaten at Michelin starred Japanese restaurants around the world too, so I’ve built up a lot of points trying pretty much everything. Izakaya Ume is one of the poorest attempts at Japanese food I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. My wife had the ramen, which was diabolical and not even remotely authentically ramen. If you’re served ramen here and think it’s acceptable, you’ve never had proper ramen before. The wrong noodles, the wrong broth…everything wrong. Don’t get me started on the sushi / sashimi. Not fresh, not good, not enough and an absolute rip off. The picture attached is the best such sampler that they do. £35. Look at a) how crap it looks and (more importantly) b) how little you get for £35!!! It’s an absolute disgrace. If you genuinely think this is a good representation of what a Japanese Restaurant should be, I’d argue you’ve never actually been to an authentic Japanese restaurant before!!!

How Delicious food and lovely staffs, it is my favorite restaurant in Tewksbury .We will come back here very soon.

Can’t recommend enough - we are familiar with Japanese food and thoroughly enjoyed all the food we ordered and the staff were also excellent. We shared a couple of sushi rolls, a couple of hand rolls, and some appetisers - the takoyaki and soft shell crab. All really tasty and carefully prepared and presented. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

Absolutely beautiful food, wonderfully presented and so tasty. We ordered lots of plates of sushi and appetizers and shared them. If you ordered one or two plate each of sushi I think you would be disappointed, but that's not how it works. Everything was excellent. We also tried three of the sakes on the advice of the staff, which were also good. One of the more conservative eaters had katsu curry which was also delicious and much better than Wagamama! Portion size for this stand alone type dish was very reasonable and kept a ravenous boy happy. This isn't a cheap place to eat, but it is really very good quality and well worth a journey to visit.

What an amazing restaurant! Amazing authentic food, excellent service and lovely atmosphere. It was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening. Already planning what we’ll have when we go next. Particularly noteworthy was the soft shell crab and the red dragon rolls.

Just eaten there, really disappointed. I’m not familiar with Japanese food, but will definitely not go there again. Cold food and really small portions at a really high prices. Seriously just don’t bother. The two main photos are what my husband and I had as main courses, the deserts are what our friends had.
