Italian on the Mound in Edinburgh, City of

I bought cannoli, but they were so small! The vanilla one could not have been more than 2 inches long! My Italian source says that the small versions, cannolicchio are at least 3.5 inches. I know that I am a tourist, but this was unbelievable. In addition, the oil soaked through the paper bag in which these were packaged. Have no desire to return to this establishment.

Takeaway coffee and a brilliant pistachio cake - simply delicious!

Such a great experience here that I'm eating here 3 times in 3 days! Stefano and his mother are so accommodating to any request. The number 9 sandwich can't be missed, had mine with haloumi as a vegetarian and it was amazing!

Just remembered I visited here on Tuesday and hadn't realised in my excitement that they were closed, I'd seen the pistachio Canoli in the window and wanted it so bad, as I got in there was a lovely man cleaning up and I realised it may be closed which should have been obvious by the door being difficult to get through (I'm so sorry!) but despite this he still served me 2 pistachio canoli and they were so good!! They were honestly melt in your mouth amazing and had me smiling for a long while, thank you so much and I'm sorry I was clueless and walked in at closing you really didn't have to serve me. The 'I seen you coming sarnie shop'. Ordered a couple of sandwiches and a couple of arancini and to be fair they tasted nice but someone must have eaten half of it, ordered in advance and paid about £25 for the 4 items so we're expecting some substantial scran...... Was hungry in an hour, tiny portions. The sandwichs are something you could knock up with some gear from the supermarket for about £2. I'm sure I'll get a reply like yeah but it's like my Nona used to make, she must have been a skinny lass with those portions. Probably wants to be 50% cheaper for what it is. Wouldn't go back tasted nice but ended up needing a Greggs 1.5 hours later. Just go to Gregg's first and cut out the middle man.

Had breakfast made by Stefano’s mum. A lovely Italian family run business and Stefano made us feel welcome. A tiny place that is greatly enhanced by the owners’ warmth. Very nicely located and walking distance from Edinburgh Castle

Very pleasant Italian coffee shop located near Edinburgh Castle. Small but comfortable and warm welcoming Italian Scottish family who runs the business. We had excellent tasting coffee and breakfast. Very reasonably priced considering the good quality of the food and its excellent location. Stefano and his lovely mama were very pleasant.

Fantastic coffee and even better food, super friendly atmosphere. Loads of locals use it, a regular even cleared the table for us. Small space but warm and practical. Definitely worth a visit when on the Royal mile.

Beautiful little Italian cafe with very friendly staff. Had the most delicious sandwich I’ve tried here! Would highly recommend. Also has a variety of cold drinks which are very necessary with the current warm weather.

One of the best baguettes I have had in a long time. Delicious fresh baguette, Full of tasty ingredients. The original jalapeño sauce is to die for and the chicken is super well cooked. Nice little place to grab a sandwich and something sweet during your visit in Edinburg.

This is a wonderful spot for just a few to sit or stop in and grab a snack to go. The grilled chicken baguette was amazing. They have many flavorful cannolis and a display of good looking items we did not get a chance to try. The Flat White Coffee was fantastic. The friendly staff was glad to see us and helpful with there menu and recommendations for dinner.

This little cafe in the heart of Edinburgh serves authentic and tasty Italian pastries. And the cappuccino was great as well. Best for take away, but if you are lucky, there is a little spot to sit and refuel.

The legendary No9 for those who know is of course the very best sandwich you are going to have anywhere in the city if not further afield and usually does it for me. But on whim today I decided to have a pasta and was offered the addition of the No9 grilled chicken with melted cheese added to the pasta.. How could you refuse. Well people, this is some next level wizardry which will just blow you away!!! I say no more.

Finally made the trip up to Edinburgh from London, after over a year of my partner hyping this place up at every opportunity as the best sandwich in Scotland. She was mistaken, as it's the best sandwich in the UK by a long way. Perfect balance of ingredients, each bringing something to the sandwich, made freshly, with care and attention. I'm glad this is so far, as otherwise I'd be the size of a house

We had some of the best home made pizza we've ever tasted in this cafe (and I've been in Italy before). The staff are super welcoming and open to a nice morning chat. The croissants and cannelloni had authentic Italian flavours and were fresh out of the oven. Definitely recommend it if you are looking for a chill time with authentic fresh food.

I traveled to Edinburgh for a small trip with a group of friends back in late June 2021. I asked for a New York Pastrami Ciabatta and Mocha and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the ciabatta. The gentleman behind the counter gave my friends and I excellent service and was overall very friendly. If ever I'm back in Edinburgh again I'll be sure to visit again and enjoy more of the cafe, hopefully the weather will be more inviting. 5/5.

The food was beautiful, the people were friendly and funny, the other diners were warm. The pasta we had was so good that I felt like crying, really reminded me of home, and it was hands down the best arancini I've had.

We took away some cannoli. They were relatively average and we didn't find them special. We like eating moderately sweet cakes and cookies while drinking coffee but these cannoli were overly sweet, certainly not due to natural honey. Overall, however, the staff was very friendly...

Found this place randomly wandering on our honeymoon and it's perfect. The coffee is excellent and the food is spot on, a true taste of Italian patisserie in Edinburgh.

Just a perfect place to relax with a cup of coffee and delicious snacks. The owner is very friendly and will take a very good care of you.

A cracking wee place. The food and service here are both great and the atmosphere is welcoming. Some stuff is pre-prepared whilst some is made up in order. The signature sandwich, the Legendary No. 9, is fantastic and comes in a few variations, mostly based in how much heat you can handle - I recommend the Triple 9, if you dare! The pasta dishes and pastries are also great. Vegetarian options are available too. When it's busy there can be a bit if a wait, but it's worth it. There is only limited seating, so mostly takeaway. This was not my first visit, and it will not be my last, highly recommend.

In response to the review before mine, completely untrue! I was visiting Italian on the Mound as I had heard great things, and was enjoying my number 9 when this ‘rude incident’ happened. These girls were sat directly on the owner’s window (waiting for their drinks from the shop next door) having no interest in what IOTM were selling and blocking the view of the shop. The owner was very polite about asking them to queue by the fence instead - I heard everything! Sounds like someone doesn’t like being told what to do and a had a very big ego! Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating and the coffee and food are incredible! Can’t wait to visit again!

Pasta dishes were amazing. They went out of their way to make up a customised fresh one for me.

I wondered into Italian on the Mound looking for breakfast - much to my delight as Stef quickly sorted me with a yummy veggie toasted ciabatta and coffee. Pastries also delicious. Really friendly and welcoming people/atmosphere. I'll definitely 'accidentally' wonder in again :D thank you...

Sadly, this review does not represent the quality of the food or the atmosphere of the cafe but speaks volumes of the customer service, or should I say, lack thereof. My friends and I were looking at some of the available options displayed at the window and after aprox 45 seconds of doing so we were approached by a wildly rude member of staff who demanded we move out of the way as we are blocking the view from potential customers. Well done guys! You earned yourselves a review prior to patrons even entering your establishment!

Came across this hidden gem just down from the Royal Mile attracted by the window display of a variety of cannoli. Sampled several and can highly recommend. The coffee was also very good - full bodied and smooth.

Any visit to Edinburgh isn't complete without a lunch at Italian on the Mound! I'd really recommend the No.9 sandwich! Sweet and smoking (with a bit of chorizo) is enough to get anyone through their afternoon 😉🥵

I’ve thought about this place at least monthly since March 2019 and I pray the day I can return comes sooner. The best cannolis I’ve ever had in my life. My friend and I reminisce about this place and the delicious baked goods all the time.

We noticed this Italian pastry shop as we were waiting for our chai from the shop next door. It was a good opportunity to get some pastries especially the cannolis. Friendly service, a tad expensive but good Italian type cannolis are not easy to get...

Staff is not trained to make drinks, drinks came watery and orders confused. Cakes weren't fresh. Wouldn't be back.
