Aloof in on word COVID FRET You’re greeting as you walk thru the door is to have multiple staff member shout about mask hands etc. Complete over the top and out of balance COVID EXCUSE then poor service is blamed on COVID which is no longer acceptable. No excuse for bad customer service is acceptable We had two cakes and both where one or two days old and dry and not worth 50p not three pounds cappuccinos. Where left as where just hot milk. The shot was under extracted by a large margin and no coffee taste cut thru the milk the milk ratio was off being all milk no foam that made the under extracted shot problem worse In short not while I have a hole I’m my bum would I consider going back and would recommend this establishment is avoided at all costs

Three generations of our family (of six) had dinner at the Island Street Grill tonight. We were so impressed with the way they’d balanced excellent COVID measures with a very friendly experience. The staff could not have been more welcoming and professional. The food was absolutely delicious and the service very prompt. The layout is great, not crammed in at all, yet retains plenty of atmosphere. So pleased to have great places like this to dine in whilst staying in Salcombe.

Warm welcome form staff who made sure we followed their covid precautions. Service was good and although we didn't eat here the food looked very good. Can imagine the place being very lively without the covid rules and during peak season. Good views from the outside terrace area especially on a warm day. Would recommend and will call back next time in Salcombe.

I only upgraded from 1 to 2 stars as the food was better than expected - felt the staff were afraid if their customers to the point we don’t feel welcomed . Full blown Covid pandering from the second we stepped over the rope threshold, Being forced to be tracked on NHS app, by the nurse in full hazmat gear . ! Sat down waited 15 minutes in a much emptied restaurant (you could drive 2 Sherman tanks down the middle of the restaurant where they have obviously taken out 2 rows of tables ), only to be told we have to order Online! First off only have 1 3G WiFi bar . To use the “free” WiFi you have to pass all your details over on a form / to be spammed no doubt ) So took ages navigating the website. Finally checkout ! So out with the credit card - tapping in your card detials, putting your name and address . All this time the nurses are loitering not doing very much. Really! Why are they using Covid to give you a negative dining experience? This is not a free NHS service we are receiving where you would tolerate such nonsense/ we are paying a pretty penny for the privilege! Oops / the card transaction fails ! Start again and use another card, hope for the best . 25mins later - the quiet restaurant awaits our order, the nurses spring into action. So the food finally arrived, and to be fair it wasn’t a long wait, and the popcorn shrimp was pretty good . Again ruined by the excessive scared nurse experience. Food comes in a tray and dropped on table while they step back, cower while you have to serve yourself from the tray “minimising contact “!!! They are not even allowed to put the plates on your table! They are more protected than a dental surgeon! Strangely when they pick the plates back up off the table there is no reverse tray experience! Just good old fashioned plate removal . Now hope you don’t need the toilet ! You need to be fit and have ample clothing as you need to go for a walk back outside the premises and back around the building to re-enter at the front door . The toilet was only 10m away from our table. 1 way system ! I did say you could drive a 2 tanks between the tables . All they have to do is put a rope down the middle . Will give you 3M each way . It’s absolute bonkers Just treat us like humans, drop the pretence. Good food ruined by a overly sterile for appearances processes. I shan’t be returning ! Business like this need to apply common sense. Don’t complain when you have to close after giving your customers experiences like this

Visited here Friday 25th September for dinner early evening and was left with major disappointment. We had visited the night before on our first night in Salcombe for a drink and decided to book it the next night for dinner after seeing the food menu - it sounded pretty good, but was pricey for a bar so we expected a lot...maybe a bit too much. I ordered mussels as a main and it was appalling for the price (£22). The fries my mussels were served with were better than the mussels themselves, which were lukewarm and sat in a really thin and measly portion of garlic cream sauce. I have eaten mussels in loads of different places and this was an unbelievably poor attempt for the price that was being charged. Also served up to our table - an overpriced poor show chicken burger (£16), and an extremely tasteless fish curry (£20). The curry I cooked in our Airbnb the night before was 50 times better, and even still I doubt I could sell it for £20 a portion... Appalling that a place can charge this sort of cover for poor food, and really surprised given that we had received various recommendations for the sister restaurant the Winking Prawn - and wouldnt be giving either our money if we go back. The staff were very good and tried to rectify it, but one of us had returned the chicken burger for something else and given everyones meals were not great it was really a bit of a lost cause - the food was overpriced and just not great which was the simple fact.

40 years old and I have never sent food back to the kitchen. I’d normally do the typical British thing and say everything was fine but the waitress come along after I’d had one bite of the £16 ‘southern fried’ chicken burger and I told her I couldn’t eat it. There was nothing southern fried about it. I feel like it was ship bought from somewhere like Iceland. Really disappointing. The waiting staff were great and tried to rectify the issue. The guys I was with were also really disappointed about the food. Totally overpriced. One of them thought their fries were better than the mussels and the others curry was bland. Shame.

We have been going to Island Street bar & grill since it opened and have enjoyed the food and indeed service, and we were looking forward to returning ...we arrived and were seated to be told that everything had to be ordered online, ok that’s fine however the rude waiter wasn’t prepared to answer questions about the menu and indeed the app we were told to use wanted us to pay for our food before we could order it. We’ve eaten out throughout the bounce back and no one expects you to pay prior to receiving your food, COVID is a pandemic, not an excuse to give a poor customer experience.

Booked a table online but I think we surprised the hostess when we arrived but got a table and then had the latest Covid safety rules explained. Ordered all seafood; prawns, mussels and lobster and the mussels were in a tasty sauce but served almost cold, prawns lacked garlic in the garlic butter (seemed like just oil to me) and my grilled lobster at £26 for half with fries had large lumps of grilled roe inside, with the rest of the meat very dry and chewy so it was pretty disappointing for a place right by the sea.

I have been before to The Island bar and grill a few years ago and was looking forward to returning. However, and I can't generalise here, there was one particular server, who's behaviour was absolutely hideous towards me. I did not get her name as she was not wearing a badge and i did not want to ask as would probably have been given the wrong one, she had blonde hair in a pony table and was stomping around. I am in the service industry as well and realise how hard it is at the moment, so always do my utmost to support places and realise that jobs are more difficult at the moment. We were given a table by the door which was wide open so a cold wind was blowing in (fine, I understand that places have to be aired) I asked her if it was possible that we could move to a table away from the door, the sarcastic response I got floored me! She spoke to me like I was a 3 year old, eventually she gave us another table, I thanked her and apologised and said it was just a bit cold. her response was a bark saying that she thought we would like to be by the door, making hand gestures as if she was trying to calm a child down who was kicking off, when all I did was thank her and explain why I asked to move. This was totally unnecessary and extremely rude! She gave us the menus and told us that we could only order via the scan, also fine, this is at a lot of places. but when I tried to scan, it didn't work. I reluctantly called her over and said that it wasn't working, to get a retort, yes this is for the Iphone! I informed her that myself and friend had Androids only, she huffed and puffed and said, well i can come and take your order! A few minutes back, she had informed us that this could not be done ?!?! The food, for what they charge was certainly not value for money by any means, way overpriced for what it was. We were in another place the night before that should have been more expensive than the Island due to the quality of the food and the excellent service, but it wasn't. My parents go down often and when I was telling them, they knew exactly who I was talking about, so this appears to be a pattern of behaviour. I will not be returning unfortunately, very disappointing. It was Saturday 29th August

The food was lovely but not the service! I understand times are hard at the moment but we had no attention from any staff member, no check on any of the food we ordered. We sat without a drink for nearly an hour, with staff just walking back and forth, trying to grab someone as they walked past. The site online wasn’t working so we were unable to order or pay, we had our booking at 8pm and didn’t have an order taken until 8:45. Quite expensive for what we actually got for food but was enjoyable and lovely, just the service let it down completely. Not known for its great food so not a place we would eat in but were booked in here by fiends staying in the town. When we arrived I went to the bar to get drinks and the waitress standing beside the bar said she would come outside and take our order - 20 minute later I had to come back inside as no one came out and we were all thirsty. There was only 2 staff behind the bar so we waited a further half an hour to get drinks which wasn’t ideal - the barman obviously wasn’t being supported and it showed in his attitude and I don’t blame him! The food came out and the burgers which several of our party had were all different sizes and with different toppings yet supposed to be all the same? The steaks were either over done or underdone and had to be sent back. The waitresses raised their game at this stage which saved the night but the kitchen cooking staff looked young and there didn’t appear to be ‘manager’ or team leader in the building which on a packed Friday night was possibly remiss of the owners.... wouldn’t rush back in a hurry!

We arrived at the bar & grill this evening and ordered a drink & asked if we could still order some food. The bar man said no problem, we were going to sit inside but with it being a nice evening we decided to sit outside. I asked the same barman if that would be ok and did I need to come back to the bar to order food. He replied no, I will get one of my minions to come out & take your order. Myself & my partner sat outside enjoying our drinks and a waitress came out with the menus, we browsed and was ready to order, after a while a waitress came to our table and said that unfortunately the kitchen had closed but she could make us some spare ribs!!! This was not what we were expecting, why tell us that we are able to order food from the full menu if the kitchen was shut. Why leave us 25 minutes with the full menu if the kitchen was closed? Absolutely terrible service as quite clearly we were completely forgotten about. A waitress arrived at our table with apologises, a £20 voucher and £7 in change on a tray. We explained that the change wasn't ours and told her to take it back. but we did take the voucher out of principle as for the ridiculous service & complete lack in communication these staff have, We were the only the table in the venue that did not receive their food.. They wanted to pay for our drinks but out of pure principle we paid for our drinks as by a £20 voucher & some random change that no doubt was for another table this was the completely dis-organised with no management control. I hope something changes soon for the future of the business.

I asked for a print out to check drinks they handed me back £5 in cash which is odd anyway and held the bill. When we got home my wife said you’ve been ripped off no way should it be that much. We visited as locals but they cater for the one time visitor for whom return service is irrelevant. Poor service from the get go where the staff behind the bar were horrifyingly awful and have no service skills, snapping at the waitress in front of us when she asked them why our table had been taken. The waitress herself was lovely I must say. All food under seasoned, salads swimming in oil, bread as a starter option was literally a cold long life baguette without even any butter! Pricing odd-you could buy the king prawns and scallops from the starter plus a bowl of chips for £20, or pay £23 for less king prawn from the main course. All in all would not recommend for the price, if it had been cheaper you wouldn’t mind as much the lack of chef skills.

We happened across this smart, modern bar and restaurant in a quiet corner of Salcombe. It was a perfect spot for an early dinner with an extensive menu and tables overlooking one of the town's many creeks and inlets. Typical steakhouse/pub fare was served up fresh and promptly. The ribs portion was large and tasty; the Jamaican curry looked a mess but was extremely tasty. Decent service and reasonable value for money in what can be an expensive town. Recommended.

I have to say something about my visit yesterday. I'm local and have been here many times. My other half and I shared the starter portion of mussels and the cracked crab. I asked for some bread to come out as a starter first. It came out altogether. Bread was delicious though. Asked where it was from. 'I don't know' was the answer. No offer of going to check for me. The 2 waitresses smiled when we came in but after that looked grumpy and uninterested. Did not check back at all of the meal. It was not busy at all so they did the time to look after us which they didnt. We ordered at 5. Food came out in good time. Starter portion of mussels I don't know if they had forgot to put mussels in there. Most were empty shells and not many in there at all. Hopefully next time more please. Crab was good. We turned up as a large group late (as usual) for our booking, armed with an array of family members from aged 3 to 73. We had a cake that needed to be lit and brought out which I had forgotten to call ahead about. We took forever to choose drinks and food as the family are terribly indecisive. But the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating to the chaos that we brought with us. Nothing was an issue at all and they were thinking two steps ahead of us and what we needed the whole time. The food was really lovely, everyone commented on how nice it was. Good wine list! We arrived about an hour before food was due to be served (from memory 5pm or 5.30) so enjoyed a drink in the outdoor area overlooking a tidal inlet (opposite the Crab Shed). I found the staff to be very friendly and attentive, they remembered what our round was too which was nice. Food was good - recommend the Island street burger - and it wasnt too expensive either, about right for Salcombe! Colouring books and activity packs available for kids too which is helpful. It’s a self order place but that was fine and the bar staff were very friendly. Drinks are pricey as is the food. But again there’s a wide range to choose from. Mains came quickly and were very tasty and pleasingly not over portioned. I had ribs which were not drowning in the usual bbq sauce but instead had really nice thin layer of something not to sweet either. We also had a Jamaican fish curry and an order of king prawns and scallops which perhaps was served with too much sauce. However all food was finished easily and none of us felt overfed but still full. Two rounds of drinks and three main courses came to £100 so be careful but prices elsewhere seemed also very high.

Off the main centre in the more working part of the town, next to boat yards etc and all the better for that. Outside seating overlooking the creek and also a large dining area inside. We dined early having a baby with us but imagine the place hots up later with the younger crowd, especially in season. Very personable staff and a bistro type selection of food. Not cheap but the portions were large.

Visited with a large group of friends. There is a great bar serving cocktails and a few draught beers, but the food menu is poor for a place like Salcombe. My vegetarian friends found little to eat and were stuck with a haloumi burger. My husband’s fish curry was ok but overpriced and the moules I had were truly awful - empty shells and tiny mussels swimming in a cream sauce which was sickly. As we were a group, we didn’t complain but I wont be visiting again and I don’t recommend.

I was disappointed with this restaurant. We only really went there as we did not realise that most places stopped serving food at 9.30.

Enjoyed our meal here. Kids burger went down especially well. Large portions with loads of fries. The fish curry was very tasty but the rice was quite crunchy. Perhaps this was intentional but I left most of it.

A fun and lively bar that serves great food during the day. Good for families and kids during the day and a great venue for a drink in the evening. A Salcombe must.

Very small portions and expensive. For example we ordered calamari for a starter which was £7.95 and when it came there were only 3 calamari on the plate!

We attended a pre wedding event here with about 25 other people from all over the world. The venue is modern, we had the doors open to the deck, fabulous weather and the tide was in. The staff were lovely, efficient, and our limited choice burger menu was great. Drinks flowed courtesy of the bride and groom, old friends and relatives met up, and and The Island Bar and Grill set us up for the wedding celebrations the next day.

I ate here with my family in July 2018. The venue is excellent over looking Salcombe Estuary with a deck. Place has great food and all the family were happy with their choice of seafood or chicken. Staff, while very busy, were engaging, smiling and attentive.

We visit the South Hams regularly and for several years have always tried to eat at the Winking Prawn, giving it excellent reviews. We thought tonight we would try the Island Street branch of the same group knowing it would have a different atmosphere but expecting the same standard of food. How wrong we were. The location was superb but then ....no table service and unable to have a tab so this meant different transactions on the same card. Thank goodness the crab cakes had the spicy jam because otherwise they were very bland. My tiger prawns were good but served in a red hot skillet and I was unable to handle them for at least 10 minutes. A wipe was available, not a finger bowl.

We are visiting Salcombe by boat and spotted this grill bar whilst walking round the foreshore. It wasn’t particularly busy but being a Thursday we didn’t question this and sat at an outside table overlooking the creek. For starters my husband had shrimp cocktail which was fine and I had the scallops. These were so disappointing, you struggled to see the 3 scallops amongst the peas as they were the size of teaspoons. They were also undercooked. The mains arrived and were nothing spectacular and small in portion size. I had the jerk chicken burger which was very dry and the pineapple was brown. My husband had the posh steak burger which also was very dry, both mains looked like they had been cooked, then kept warm while we ate our starters. At well over £60 for what essentially was burger and chips I think you are paying for location rather than quality.

Great relaxed shack atmosphere. Friendly, attentive staff. Menu not fine dining but solid. My wife started with popcorn shrimps, and followed it with half a lobster, both well cooked and hot on arrival at the table. I had mussels to start, perfectly done and piping hot. Sadly my main course was poor, I had the 3 scallops and 3 king prawns on a skillet with samphire(possibly my favourite veg), there was no caramelisation on the scallops, the king prawns were the smallest I have seen, probably borderline shrimps and the samphire was bulked up by broccoli. I had a side dish of onion rings which were not particularly crisp, and looked a little like a reheat of an earlier sitting. Had I not been on hols I would have been less relaxed and it would have all been sent back. I imagine plenty of their customers might be one-offs and I wonder if they were taking advantage of this. Such a shame because everything else was very good.

We went here as recommended by the locals. It was late and busy and they literally squeezed us in, right by the bar. The food was good and the atmosphere was light and fun. The place took on another life when the live band took to the stage. It became packed and energetic. Flip-flops are definitely the footwear of the day here. A little gem in a cosy quaint bay. Would visit again

August in Salcombe always presents a challenge - where to go to lunch and where on earth will you get a table? Tried here for the first time today - I'd heard of it and knew it was here but had never been: it's part of the winking prawn group. They provided cracking service and excellent food. Also very child friendly at lunchtime. Worth seeking out and good in a busy Salcombe day

Went here on two occasions - once for lunch when we arrived in Salcombe - wet and hungry - Staff were friendly but the food took forever to come out which was disappointing . Food was ok - burgers for kids etc . We went back one evening and the service was shocking - no one came near our table - drinks left empty , Staff chatting amongst themselves - Food is Average - not amazing , not bad but the service was frustrating and so we wouldn't go back -

Awful from start to finish. The staff were clueless and the food and drinks were mediocre at a push. Loaded fries were more like semi dusted with topping and straight out of the freezer. The buttermilk chicken burger was more like a mini chicken fillet. When we complained we were met with a staff member who obviously wasn’t trained to deal with complaints as her response was ‘you keep complaining’! I would not recommend this restaurant and I find it strange how they claim to have hundreds of happy customers but only a handful of reviews on TA. Work out what you are. Are you a cocktail bar or a restaurant? May I also suggest that if you are the owner you maybe spend a bit more time working at your own restaurant and also train your staff.

Unfortunately extremely overpriced and very limited choice. Is not what Sailor V was in previous years! Wouldn't waste my time going back... Plenty of nicer venues in the centre of town at more reasonable prices

The coffee is great and the best prices around for the quality and size. The light bites were delicious, again very well priced for what you get. Would definitely recommend if you aren’t too fussed about coffee with a view or environment or brand name.

Beautifully situated on the waterfront, opposite Queen Anne's Battery Marina. Wonderful panoramic views in all directions and a hot spot if you catch the sun right. Outside decor and furniture's not all that and could do with an update but the food, wine and service is divine. I only had a starter and was pleasantly surprised - king prawns I chorizo and garlic cream based sauce, served with garlic buttered Ciabataa on the side, & a wedge of lemon. I also had a glass of Pinot Noir Della Venezie, sharp, crisp and delisch with the food.
