Great fish and chips! The best potato scallops around. Will be back. Worth the journey from Birkenhead. T U The owner was such a gentleman as well. He is obviously very proud of his business.

Traveled to this place at 9pm based on Google opening hours saying open until 10 however it was closed and despite workers inside they refused to help me would not recommend!!

A real no frills classic old style chippy. Excellent chips and delicious fish. The only downside was the batter was a bit greasy and the oil needs changing.

Drove all way from Birkenhead as wss told great fish an chips Website says open till 10 pm . Not so closes at 8.30pm as owner was there locking up. Disappointed to say the least. Correct your opening times.

I ordered cod and chips for £9 and was disappointed given the good reviews on here. The cod was ok, tasted fresh but a bit greasy. The chips were a let down, stodgy and had an earthy taste. After eating a few, I lost my appetite.

Says on websute its open till 2pm , i got there at 1.40pm and it was closed . Rude little man behind counter dudnt want to know . Steer clear of this plaxe

Just bought a sausage dinner all dried up sausage warmed up chips vile 8 pounds !!! Discusting on my way back ti Liverpool or would took it back ! How your getting away selling that god knows ! So happy i allocated back here just demanded my money they were reluctant at 1st but good job they gave me it thats all im saying avoid this pit !!!!!!

Small portions and very expensive

No frills, traditional chippy. The chips were spot on, delicious! The guy gives great friendly service. Would definitely go back and recommend. Cash only.

they do a great battered cod and sausage, chips are nice and tasty, great friendly owners you have to love jimmy and his son they are very nice people and you also have a good selection of drinks to quench your thirst, good prices for good food the atmosphere in that shop is impeccable. irby fish n chips has a place in my heart you can see them make the delicious food in front of you and my mouth starts to water. Shocking, rude and overpriced !! Feel sorry for the residents of Irby if this is the best, chips tasteless and no offer of salt & vinegar, categorically will never set foot in there again!!!!!

Nicest fish I know of. I regularly drive 5 miles each way rather than use more local chippies. The range of meals is very narrow but the point of the place is it does the best fish and chips by far.

£2 for the smallest portion of chips I've ever had. Shocking!

Not sure how this place got a 4 star rating, I ordered Cod, chips and curry sauce, sauce was separate which was fine but the chips were under cooked and the cod in batter was not cooked in the middle, fish was very sloppy. Portion size I was given was like a child's dinner, was not worth £7 at all.......first and last time il ever go there!!!

The goats of fish and chips, there isn't a better fish and chips on the wirral your crazy if you go anywhere else.

Not a bad chippy. There are a couple of downsides though; 1. The guy behind the counter literally looks like David Dastmalchian (the bad guy in Prisoners and The Dark Knight - no, not Paul Dano, the other one). Now that's not neccessarily a bad thing but I can't help but feel a little bit scared when he's pouring salt onto my chips. 2. The mushy peas are quite rubbish.

Quiet when I entered. Floor space marked out for covid and masks worn. Really good, friendly service. Beautiful fish and chips with mushy peas. Fresh tasting fish in tasty crisp batter, chips were excellent and peas as good as any I've ever had. Parking was easy at the side. All in all we will definitely go again.

Excellent chips. Proper British chip shop. None of that oriental imitation rubbish. Not a kebab or stir fry in sight. Just fresh cooked, hot chips with a bit of colour to them and slight ly crispy... Plenty of s&v and even some good old fashioned crispy bits. I bloody enjoyed that. I'll be back.

Since moving to the St Helens area, and more recently to Prenton, I have been unable to find a decent traditional chippy...until tonight. My girlfriend and I both agreed that the fish and chips were delicious, and my cat even finished off her mushy peas (which she was too full to finish). I can't say whether or not this is the best chippy on The Wirral, because there are plenty that I haven't visited. However, I will now travel to Irby Fish & Chips for our "chippy teas" as it is the best new chippy I have visited in years. Highly recommended (and a lot cheaper than the "award winning" chippy in Prenton which serves thin fish covered in too much batter).

Superb fish and chips tried loads around Heswall and this wins! The chips aren’t greasy or dry just perfect and crispy! The fish is so fresh and falls to bits will definitely be back!!!

I have been coming from West Kirby for fish and chips here for many years. The key is that you have to wait whilst they are cooked, which shows that they are fresh. I will not go anywhere else. Also the owners are really nice and it is kept immaculately clean.

I live in Hoylake and drive to Irby Chip Shop because the fish is perfectly cooked with batter crispy and not soggy as I have found shops nearer to me serve.I have bought from Irby for many years and hand on heart, can say I have neverBeen disappointed in quality, quantity or friendliness of Father and sons who haveServed me over the years. Long may they remain!!

Been going here for years and always enjoyed high, quality food but in recent weeks the standards have dropped considerably. The chips in recent weeks have been either over cooked or hard or under cooked which in my eyes is very amateurish and disappointing.

Could not get anything . Arrived during opening hours having travelled fro Oswestry and it was closed. Bit disappointed , but went to the pub nearby, The Cottage loaf and had a pint a lovely fish and chips, very pleased to say it was COD !

Can't recommend it enoughChips were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Fish was perfect, crispy battery and flaky fresh cod on the insideWonderful place to get a take out, to take to Thurstaston and eat on top of the hill or down by the beach (remembering to put all of your litter in the bins)

Overpriced... Good and bad days

This is a traditional English fish and chip shop, so the selection isn’t huge. However, from several recommendations, everything is good here. I just had a portion of chips at lunchtime and they were very good but rated 4 due to small choice

I have been using this chippy for nearly thirty five years and it’s still the best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted. The chips are to die for , the batter is perfect and the fish beautifully fresh and flaky. Also the sausages are great, no gristle or hard bits. It’s always spotlessly clean and Jim is very friendly and chatty.

After visiting my Son in Law to drop of a burner I realise it was other opportunity to try some fish and chips from Irby Fish and Chips.I got there about 13.50 on Wednesday, so I guess he was just about to close, but any question of the quality of the fare was quickly dispelled, when I was served up a tray of beautiful fish chips and peas, takes me back to time when we always had fish and chips from our local Greek run chippy and we’re not eating buns with the taste and texture of cardboard wrapped around an even more disgusting blander burger ...Keep up the good work .... I for one really appreciate it

Awful experience on Saturday early evening ordered fish chips & curry sauce & found plastic in my fish returned to the shop & basically got my money threw back at me guess the recent 1* food hygiene rating was true! will never ea there again

Visited whilst staying in the area. Friday evening with family, place was busy, we all opted for fish and chips - good quality, very tasty, would recommend and return.

In 10 years of going to this chippy we have never been disappointed. Fish are always wrapped separately to the chips and as we prefer to add our own salt and vinegar at home the fish remains good and crispy during the 10 minute journey back. Keeping such superb standards over such a long time is remarkable so well done to all.

This place is a above average for quality and freshness. The cod and chips is £5 A generous portion of chips and cooked to order.

Thought we would try this place out as we’d seen it a few times. Seems family run with the father cooking and the 2 sons in their 40’s serving. We ordered and were left waiting while a regular who walked in after us was served.

I went into Irby Fish and Chips last Friday 06/07/18 about 7.10pm because my son in law has always told me you won’t get better fish and chips and he’s correct,so I ordered two Haddock, unfortunately because they are so popular they had already sold out so I ordered two Cod lightly battered chips and mushy peas,rushed home shared out our meals between my wife and granddaughter Orla aged 5 and we all said they were the fish and chips ever, I even ate all the batter which I never do, well done to the owner the young lad who served me, very pleasant chap

Went downhill when apparently new owners took over last year; poor quality, re-heated food later in the day, and regularly closes well before the advertised time of 10pm. UPDATE: The precious owners have returned! Seems the 'awful crew' we're only there temporarily while the real owners were abroad for a few months. All back to usual high standards and reliable opening hours now; thank goodness!
