IJ Mellis Cheesemonger in Fife

Normally I would give 5 stars due to the quality of the food and service over the past 3 years but unfortunately recently the service has gone down. Last week the guy ( with a woolly hat) couldn't cut salami ( slivers flying off or big chunks were cut- quite funny really if it wasn't food) and the gorgonzola cutting resulted in an unappetising blob ( in addition, his packing was atrocious) but I had patience and smiled with all of that thinking that he was new ( even if I had to tell him to add stickers to prevent the salami from falling out . However this week the same guy was rude and wanted to serve a man behind me, I objected saying I was in a hurry and only needed bread ( I am a pretty chilled lady usually ) and instead of apologising he said said he couldn't get there at that moment due to his colleague being in the way! Not good! I am not sure if I want to return.......

Popped in here on a day trip to St Andrew's for a loaf of bread, as the selection in the window looked good. Got a simple brown sourdough for the eye watering price of £5.50. Should have suspected it would be a lot as there were no prices in the window. Ok, it was good but certainly not worth paying two or three times as much as you would in most bakeries with equally good, if not better, products.

Perfect ingredients for the best meal we had in Saint Andrews where the restaurants aren’t good enough but the cheese shop certainly has a wonderful bottle of wine. Great bread, couple cheeses and a couple salami. What more do you need? Highly recommend picnicking as a dining option.

I visit here as often as I can. We train guide dog puppies and they all love coming here for the smells . The staff are so good and just ignore them which is pretty hard to do. The shop is always spotless and the presentation of the cheese is awesome. Karen the manager is amazing and makes everyone feel very welcome. I told her what type of cheese I like and she let me try some before I bought. We usually come in for the beautifully cooked bread. The spiced fruit loaf is to die for. When we took it home it was gone in a flash. The. Geese lasted a bit longer . The cheese isn’t cheap but they are mostly specialist and dare I say it, you get what you pay for. If you want cheap cheese go to the supermarket around the corner. These cheeses are amazing.

I have never seen anything like this cheese shop in the UK. The section and options are incredible. They literally have it all. As well as cheeses they sell crackers and all things cheese related. On top of that we bought a loaf of leek and cheese bread, I nearly lost my mind it was so good. Set a budget prior to going in and good luck sticking to it.

Delicious cheese and bread with friendly and very knowledgeable staff

I went into Mellis yesterday to buy some cheese as a gift to a friend I am visiting. Prices seem to have increased quite a bit since I was last there and I ended up paying £18 for 2 wedges of cheddar! A ridiculous prices for cheese and has pretty much ensured that I won’t be buying cheese from Mellis again. Also, when I was offered a ‘taster’ to help me make a choice the tiny sliver offered to me on the end of the knife was ridiculous and So small it was difficult to lift it from the blade. Given the prices being paid for their produce I thought this was miserly to say the least. Poor show Mellis. You should remember not all the folk who live in St Andrews are from the affluent middle and Upper classes.

Really friendly, amazing food, even gave our dog some cheese. very good quality cheese and breads in stock, a must visit.

A small cheesemonger which also provides other victuals and accoutrements to accompany their range of cheeses, breads, butters and various chutneys. The cheeses are from around the U.K. mainly with several Scottish entries. The breads cover a wide spectrum as does the pickles and chutneys. Cold meats are also on offer. Usually only one member of staff which means a wait but very much worth it. The cheeses are well cared for.

Meats are cut using a pristine old hand-cranked slicer. The staff are keen for you to sample foods you might want to buy. Their tomato and onion relish should win an award!

Popped into this cheesemonger with my wife as we walked about st.andrews it was a lovely well set out shop and we were greeted by a very friendly woman behind the counter who asked if we needed help with any selections or information. She also said we could sample any of the cheeses we liked before buying so this was a nice touch. We sampled the beautiful smoked gubbeen cheese which was absolutely delicious and we bought this it was probably a bit more expensive but their is good reason for that , I don’t believe you ever get the quality of cheese like that in commercial shops and supermarkets so i feel it’s worth sometimes treating yourself to some real goodness whilst also supporting small local businesses. Definitely will be back

Nice staff but poor produce. Popped in for a sourdough loaf. At £4.50 it is 3 times the price of Lidl’s. Wouldn’t mind if it was quality but unfortunately it was stale. We were back home in Dundee when we tasted it so wasted journey. If indicative of produce management then I would not return. Lidl’s is excellent and freshly made. Don’t go on shopfronts alone.

I purchased 2 Hot Cross buns at £2.00 each. I was surprised at the price (they weren't labelled), but decided to have them, as they had already been handled and put into a bag. Having eaten one of them, I can say they're certainly not worth the price - in fact, it was the worst Hot Cross bun I've had.

Popped in today to buy a fruit loaf we saw in window and it is lovely BUT the young ladies attitude between customers took me aback and she needs to learn to treat ALL the same. The young man, well spoken buying selection of cheeses for a visit to friends got the VIP thank you treatment. Maybe as I asked a perfectly valid question of "are the loafs baked daily " you would have thought we slapped her face as we got the NON VIP just buy it and leave treatment. One rude lady !! I will not offend the staff again as would not use shop again even if loafs were lovely.

This is the best cheese shop I have ever entered. I live 11,350 miles away yet one of the very first things I do whenever I return to Scotland is visit this shop. I cannot wait for June to roll around again.

Asked for 100g of Smoked Lancashire cheese got 196g and had to pay for this. Really not good enough.

Fantastic display and great range of specialty breads and cheese. I have just finished a delicious cheese and chilli bread so good!! Wish there was a branch in Ayrshire.

One assistant was very helpful and willing, but lacking product knowledge. The other one when I asked about a cheese, she told me to "Google it". If I'm paying £15 for some bread and cheese I'd like less attitude with it. If you like the personal touch, go elsewhere.

Stockbridge shop very friendly. Disappointed today visiting St Andrew's and interrupted the assistant texting. Not really bothered. Cannot try cheeses but ok for assistant to touch cheese whilst serving with no gloves on and handling money!

Not a cheese fan but me and the wife always visit when we are in the area. The wife loves this little shop and insists we visit. Highly recommend.

Absolutely great choice of cheeses

This place has quality products. A lot of variety of cheeses from all places. The breads they have are spectacular, we tried the cheese with leek and it was delicious.

We had a cheese tower for our wedding from Mellis, went down an absolute treat and the guests loved it. We also had great fun trying the cheeses in the shop, the staff were really helpful and knew their stuff.

We found out about this little shop from a lady working at St. Andrews Castle. I bought a souvenir from the gift shop; and when she noticed my signature, she said the cheese shop makes a cheese with the same name. Well, of course, we had to go buy some. It was delicious! The shop also has a good selection of items other than cheese.

Every time we are in St Andrews we stop here to stock up on their wonderful fresh bread, scotch eggs and wonderful cheese. Staff always very helpful and will let you taste cheeses before you buy.

A cheese and chilli pepper loaf in the window drew us into the shop and the choice of cheeses and breads was just amazing. We bought the loaf and a Shropshire Blue cheese and both were delicious. Really worth a visit/

The staff are always so helpful in making suggestions and letting you taste the cheeses to check you get a balanced selection for a cheeseboard. Nice selection of bread and condiments too. The membrillo is a good pick! Of course, it comes at a price compared to M&S or Morrisons cheese cabinets!

Fantastic trip to this shop today. The only girl serving was fantastic and knew her stuff. We wanted some thing different for Xmas day, not the usual supermarket stuff and we were not disappointed. This lovely lady allowed us to taste several cheeses and described them to a T. We were impressed and will return on xmas eve to purchase our Xmas day cheese

Wonderful array of cheeses. The shop though was freezing but I suppose it was to keep the cheeses fresh. I hope the staff get extra w breaks to thaw out.

Visiting st Andrews from USA and popped in for a browse.What a shop, the young female was very knowledgeable and quite good pronouncing strange name delicious cheeses. We also bought one of their breads and OH MY , were they good. One of the best memories from Scotland.

If you need cheese in your life then this is the place you need to visit! Great selection, they even have my favourite Comte cheese from France. Try the bread as well, we had a sourdough loaf and a cheese, avo and leek white bread - both very good.

The ladies in St. Andrews are marvelous and put up with us trying many a different cheese but we did go away with load of cheese, which was yummy. Thanks girls xx

Great range of cheeses and cured meats. There's also a good range of chutneys etc and various breads. A bit pricey but well worth the money.

Small and well stocked with interesting cheeses and other gourmet items as well as artisan breads. Not a restaurant but great start to a picnic or cheese tasting.

I bought some supposedly 'superior' Scotch Eggs and Chutney at Mellis and ended up rather disappointed.The Scotch Eggs were certainly 'superior' in price, but were distinctly average in terms of flavour.Also, Mellis's chutneys, which I had bought on many occasions over the years, seemed to have changed in consistency and are now overly 'runny' for my liking.I had expected better.

This is just the place to buy artisan cheeses in excellent condition from all over Europe. Full stop. they also sell pickles butters and odds and sods. Just excellent and with staff who actually know what they are talking about.

Great choice of cheese as expected but also has a very good selection of unusual breads. The chilli one is great. Definitely worth stopping at if on South Street.

Have passed this shop many times but never stopped to look properly at there range of products. This time the display of different types of breads in the window made us stop and look more closely. Chose a cheese and leek loaf which was absolutely delicious. Had to return to buy another one to take home with us. While buying that i noticed a game pie which i also bought to try. This turned out to be delicious, very filling.

The other half LOVES cheese but I am lactose intolerant so not the best place for me. We got some leek and cheese bread which was lovely toasted

This is a shop where you will be able find all sorts of tasty cheeses, from "everyday" cheddar to other more unusual but equally tasty cheeses, also unusual and very tasty breads to complement the cheeses. The service there if very friendly, with nothing being too much trouble for the friendly staff. Well worth a visit !!

I shop here every time I am in St. Andrews which is once a week. Best cheeses from far and wide. Would highly recommend a visit and try some cheese that you probably haven't tasted before. Word of warning though it can be quite smelly.

This shop may not be large but the choice of cheese is outstanding. All tastes are catered for and they also offer different breads, a range of cured sausage, imaginatively filled pork pies and scotch eggs. Don't miss it!

Bought a few cheeses for a friend who ended up sharing them with us. I am so glad she did. The shop is exactly how a shop should be: enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff and mountains of cheese. As for the cheeses: All were excellent, but my word. Cooleeney. Perfect. I have never tasted anything quite like it.

Good cheeses and produce in general, but grossly overpriced. Even some types of bread (e.g. cornbread), exatly the same as in other shops, is almost a third more expensive.

I have been in this treasure of a shop several times, its a little piece of Paris in St Andrews, lovely cheeses, quince jelly, bread, so many tasty things. the charcoal cheese was a particular favourite of mine.well worth a visit on a trip to St Andrews

Very good cheese shop, and excellent knowledge & recommendations from the helpful staff. I had to wait for a while for the people in front of me to buy roughly 746 different types of cheese in different amounts. But the cheese was worth the wait.
