Hungry Horse - The Matchstick Man in Salford

Despite staying in a hotel right beside this so called “hospitality venue” and having done literally nothing to cause so called staff at this “Hungry Horse” shambles to have a problem I was refused admission. I had committed the sin of going to watch Manchester United as an away fan. Although actually it was made clear the Hungry Horse was only prepared to admit and do business with people who had bought tickets as home Manchester United fans. Hard to tell if they were and are being strangely judgemental about me and my friends or about Man Utd fans but it seemed ignorant, inappropriate and unacceptable to me and my friends. Avoid this whole area around Salford Quays if Manchester United are playing at home. You are not welcome and that will be made very clear to you.

We went for a family birthday meal there was quite a lot of us. We was greeted by Leanne who is absolutely lovely who showed us to our table and got our drinks are food was served to us by Ellie and Monique who done a great job bringing all the food out on time really really lovely girls the food was amazing so hats of to the chef and a great range of gluten free options too

I've had a good time while visiting The Matchstick Man until I witnessed a very uncomfortable situation between the guests and the bar staff. The management of the staff got involved and I saw tension rising at the bar between the guests and the management. It seemed that guests were explaining something to the management but from far, it looked very unpleasant as the management was visibly getting angry and insulting. It was unbelievably unprofessional of the management to act this way towards the guests, resorting to anger and impoliteness to sort a situation. Having seen how aggressive the management was getting towards the guests at the bar was shocking and scary, thinking this could have been me in that situation. Nobody deserves that treatment and the guests have acted with integrity by waiting for the police to arrive to resolve the situation. I will never return to the Matchstick Man having seen how the staff treat guests. Very shocking behaviour.

Terrable customer service very rude manager and a bar staff member worst experience i have ever experienced from going out for birthday meal

I am disgusted by the events at The Matchstick Man yesterday. The lack of professionalism and work ethic from management was appalling. The staff member clearly had no basic training in handling cash. The approach to the guest was very aggressive and abusive. Only if the website allowed for this would the rating be 0 or even lower. The police were called due to management's inappropriate behaviour and I must reiterate the appalling attitude towards customers. Thank you for making our evening a nightmare. I will be making a formal complaint to Greene King in due course.

Excellent family friendly pub especially on Matchdays, we love it!!! Staff are extremely friendly and helpful and food and drinks are spot on!

Ordered 3 meals to sit out side 1st two meals came then 3rd came 2 mins later but was wrong ! I asked for them all to be replaced all 3 as we were eating together only got told they could only change 1 as the other 2 were correct Tried to explain but your need to cook a new meal as we are all supposed to be eating together and it was your mistake but nope only 1 got changed. Not impressed very poor.

Tess made my family’s day out with her funny conversation she was so kind and efficient with our needs, I am definitely coming back!

Had a brilliant time, great atmosphere Leanne was the perfect host, and looked after us really well, will definitely return very soon.

Always my first choice for lunch, its good value for money and the food is good, the staff are lovely and will go out of their way to make sure you have a good time, leanne is so lovely and always make us feel very welcome.

I just want to give a massive shoutout to Leanne for being so amazing with our sister today Miss Sassy pants :-D from the moment we walked in she was so friendly and happy, our sister is disabled and very chatty and Leanne couldn’t do enough to please her, the food was also very delicious. We will be returning very soon I’m sure.

I want to thank Leanne and the rest of the team for looking after me. Once again they went out of the way to make my experience enjoyable.

Me and my daughter was going to see James Arthur at the AO Arena so I looked up somewhere to eat not far and decided to come here as it was a nice location, when we arrived the lady at the bar was friendly and said we can sit anywhere without a reserve sign on, we found a nice table and ordered our food and drink on the app, the drink arrived within a couple of minutes and within 5 minutes our food had arrived, me and my daughter both had the cheese and bacon burger, the food was lovely and hot and within 5 minutes we had a check back from the waiter who was very friendly, The pub itself was lovely and clean and all the staff was very friendly, I would definitely come back to this pub.

Always a great time. Super reasonable prices, really nice atmosphere and the staff are fantastic. Kieran was awesome, and pointed us to a great deal (bottle of Sauvingon for 7.99 on Wednesdays!!!). Will definitely be returning for that deal! Thanks Kieran!

Good food. Our server Monique was great met all our needs very welcoming Never had the steak before but I decided to get it on the Monday deal . It was spot on . Asked Monique for the chefs name , young man Aaron made our steaks . Much appreciated it was lovely !

I have been a few times now and the food is lovely, staff warm and welcoming, venue is clean. Chloe took good care of us with pleasant and quick service. Thoroughly enjoyed and will continue to enjoy in the future

Called in whilst driving past, looking to give the kids something to eat. Cheap ‘n’ cheerful. Turned out to be far better than expected. Kids meals were a great size, and the burger was amazing. The bar lad Kieran was chatting to my upset daughter, which cheered her up.

We arrived early this morning for breakfast and stayed for lunch and cocktails as we were waiting for our evening flight home, we were served at the bar all afternoon by Leanne she was very friendly and helpful we were served our food and desserts by Monique who was also a lovely young lady, this was our first time here but won’t be our last!

I visited this hungry horse on many occasions in the past and highly recommended it as per my previous reviews. However, on this occasion, it was a terrible experience. I arrived here just after 9 am with my partner. Looking forward to a full English breakfast it was clear however when we got here something wasn’t quite right. All the pub was closed up and we couldn’t get in. There were other customers also attempting to get in. I called through to the pub but no one answered. On a second attempt a disinterested member of staff said on match day they don’t open until 10:30 am. There is nothing on the website and nothing on Google reviews telling you that this pub opens later on Matchday. I then raised the complaint directly with greene king, clearly explaining why I was so disappointed. They replied again just over a week after investigations to say what I already now knew. The pub opens later on Matchday and apparently there is a sign outside telling you this. But as I said this is not good enough. Nothing on the website. Nothing on Google opening times and you don’t find out they’re closed until you actually get there. we wasted time, effort and petrol to find this out Rest assured I will not be giving this hungry horse, any more of my business, as my partner and I certainly left hungry. I hope others read this and agree is unacceptable and the chain clearly don’t care for their customers. If you want a reliable cooked breakfast with genuine sincere customer service, I recommend you stick to Wetherspoons or as we did on this occasion went to the local Morrisons in Eccles, where we had a great breakfast . Greene King chain you should be ashamed of yourselves and I hope the staff at the matchstick men have some much needed customer service training in how to answer a phone and display empathy. An own goal on every level!

Not the best experience. We arrived at 11am for when the pub opened for breakfast for the pub not to open until 11.40am. Asked why they was late opening and they told us its because they had a meeting… Sat down to be told their would be no breakfast at all to be told just no sausage and mushroom then to be told here is now breakfast. We ordered a few chicken starters while waiting for our friends to arrive from the hotel. They was soggy because loads of sauce all over them. Chicken bites was watery inside, chicken wings undercooked looked very anaemic. Ordered three breakfast, bacon was cold, sausage was bad quality and my friends chicken tikka was cold so majority of the food wasn’t eaten. Spoke to the manager in house to discuss our issues and she said that she watched cctv of the waitress giving us a check back which was never done. Plates was on the table until we left even after we complained. The manager took the chicken tikka off the bill but i did ask for the chicken wings to be refunded also and i got told no even though majority of the food we left untouched. Coming from birmingham, staying in hotel near we wanted a bite to eat. Never again! I would like someone to contact me about this. Thanks

I've been here a couple of times for food. The meals are not good and thats if you can get your first or second choice as they never had these 'not got those in at the moment' is their favourite sentence sometimes including drinks, i don't believe the place has seen an oven let alone have one, seem like its just a microwave. The landlord is rude wouldn't be surprised if one day he just walk over to the table and took a piss on my chips.

Few drinks with colleagues, we come in 2-3 times a week and Leanne is always very friendly and helpful especially when it comes to drink deals (Prosecco Friday)

We have been here before quite a while ago visiting from Kendal. Very friendly staff . The food was excellent piping hot & very tasty . The chicken strips Ona bed of sizzling peppers & onion a choice of two sides is available with other choices of both main dishes & sides. Well worth trying. Excellent prices. Highly recommend.

Staff are lovely, food was dreadful unfortunately. Was given the wrong starter, took ages for the main to arrive and when it did the chips were hard and burnt, skewers were like stones. Clearly it had been sitting there for some time. Not good.
