A classic in Edinburgh, where you can have a taste of Scottish cuisine. Plenty of disses to choose from and a careful service make this restaurant a place to recommend. Its location, very close to castle hill, is also a plus.

Place located on Victoria Street where it is recommended to make an appointment in advance, otherwise you may not find a place. The atmosphere in the restaurant was slightly noisy, as there were quite a few people dining at that time. The service was friendly and correct, even a waiter tried to adapt to our language. We ate the following dishes: - Roasted carrots with spicy sauce and cumin. - Fried Scottish salmon with bread. - Pumpkin risotto. - Grilled marinated chicken breast. - Beef Cheek. - Brownie with ice cream. - Banana and toffee cake. All the dishes were delicious and well presented, but the quantity was very tight and we left the restaurant quite hungry. For the price of the dishes, we thought it was a place that was too expensive, since the food was not of the highest quality to adjust the portions so much.

Nice place and friendly staff but massively overpriced for the quality you get. They also add things to your bill without asking like water and then charge extortionate amounts for it. They tried to charge £3.75 for a litre bottle of still water we never even asked for. The food was nice but under seasoned and I expect a lot more for these prices.

Me and my friend went there after a tourist guide recommended this place and honestly, we were very disappointed. I’m not sure if it was what we chose or what could have possibly been the reason but portions were ridiculously small and a bit expensive for what we got. Pictures look great so maybe it was just our choices. After being served, me and my friend were a bit confused about the portions and also by the looks of the food itself and I believe staff noticed that because they came three times to check on us but obviously you cannot really expect customers to tell you: “this is not what we expected”. I mean, you cannot get a smoked salmon wrong but somehow it was simply a smoked salmon portion rolled in a rose shape (?) with some cucumbers slices and few drops of mayonnaise… My friend had what it looked like food taken out of a can and placed on the plate with bbq sauce (confit duck). Ironically she had food poisoning that night😅. Staff was nice but sorry if we didn’t mention anything to you, we felt this was unnecessary as it’s not you cooking but the chef. However, if I come back to the city I will give it another try.

Food was nice, shame for manager Lin quite careless. I am a manager in a restaurant and I know how to handle certain situations. At the end of the meal my partner noticed his glass dirty (red lipstick on it) and mentioned to the manager. Her answer on this was “you could have mention this earlier”. An apologie was not made which isn’t very good after all. Our intention was not to complain but just highlight an opportunity for the restaurant. Absolutely not recommended as customers should be treated differently, as there is no business without them.

I normally focus almost solely on the food in my reviews but the atmosphere was just buzzing in this restaurant and should be mentioned first. And that somehow did not stop the waitors from being super attentive and friendly at all times. Clearly a popular place and for good reason. Atmosphere aside, Howies is a restaurant to go to if you want well-cooked, hearty Scottish food. The venison was very nicely cooked and thoughtfully accompanied by tasty sauces and vegetables that still had a slight crunch to them - just as they should be. The salmon was also cooked beautifully. Portions were decent - as seems to be the norm in Edinburgh. I wasn't blown away by extreme flavours or ultra creativity here - but I didn't want to be. We got exactly what we wanted - great, tasty, local food that made us feel warm on a very cold evening. And what this restaurant is doing is clearly working, judging by how popular it is!!

This restaurant was my favorite to dine during the weekend in Edinburgh. I had booked dinner for my partner’s birthday. The moment we walked in, we felt warm and welcomed. We tried the soup of the day, which was puréed kale and potatoes. Absolutely delicious. For the mains, I had the mushroom risotto and roasted salmon. Very tasty. We shared a toffee pudding for dessert, and the restaurant had remembered that I stated it was my partner‘s birthday in the reservation, so they wrote „Happy Birthday“ on the plate. Lovely. The staff were extremely attentive and explained the dishes very well. I loved this restaurant and was happy with the experience overall.

I'm going to go to the middle of the day. I'm going to have a good time. I'm going to have a good time. I'm going to have a good time. I'm going to have a good time. It's like this. I'm going to go to the middle of the day. Sean, who was the first person to go to Deulwoo after doing Make-a-Reservation, made Woohee sit down during the moon ape gacha-up, and the foreigners started not getting drunk inside. Chef Sean's Urip Bodya Oekumins dish arrived first. It was just as bad. After the meal, sequin pudding was served for ‘an hour’. If you clean up the dishes in the middle, your dessert will come out. Just wait. That's why I'm going to cut off the 10% tip. The staff’s service is worth the tip. Damn. Hagisu's kkowijap nui and Nago soup were also delicious. Overall salty taste. Still, most of the staff were friendly. If you want to go, ask for a seat further away from the bar! please! We had a great time in here. But slightly overrated. I visited after booking, ordered a course meal. The bread for the soup came out when the soup was all cold. After the main meal, we waited 50 minutes to receive the dessert. We couldn't believe we were the first customers. It wasn't even that they forgot to order. I was doubtful about the basic attitude as a restaurant. We went with high expectations, but as a result, I left the food as it was. We were disappointed with the ordinary mesh-potato and the smell of meat.

During our 3-day trip to Edinburgh last week to celebrate Chinese New Year, my hubby and I walked past Howies Restaurant on our second morning and were shocked to see a long line of people waiting for lunch—so early! It immediately piqued our curiosity, but we continued with our planned sightseeing. Later that afternoon, around 2 p.m., we decided to try our luck for a late lunch, and fortunately, we were seated. From the very start, the service impressed us. Bee and Olivia, our waitresses, were so friendly and professional. When we asked if we could share a three-course meal plus an appetizer (as I have a small appetite), they explained why it might not be possible and immediately sought guidance from the General Manager, Sarah. She kindly informed us that each guest needed to order at least one main course, but the entire conversation was handled with such politeness and sincerity that we felt completely respected—no discomfort at all. We then ordered two two-course lunches: 🍲 My hubby’s meal: Carrot soup & salmon main 🐟 My meal: Catch of the day main & a dessert The carrot soup was absolutely incredible—who would have thought a simple carrot soup could have such a memorable aftertaste? It was hands down the best carrot soup I’ve ever had. Even the bread served with it was outstanding—clearly baked in-house, with a thin, crispy crust and soft, slightly tangy interior. We loved its texture and depth of flavor. Both fish mains were perfectly cooked, bringing out the true essence of fresh seafood—simple yet executed flawlessly. When Restaurant Manager, Karen passed by, we shared our appreciation for the food. She enthusiastically told us more about the ingredients and preparation—a clear sign of how deeply involved and passionate she is about her work. As for dessert, I was torn between the Banoffee pie and the warm apple/lemon crumble. Bee went above and beyond—she showed me photos of both, listened to my preferences, explained their differences, and even asked the chef if my request to have sauces/toppings on the side could be accommodated. I ultimately went with the recommended Banoffee pie, and it turned out to be the perfect choice! Both my hubby and I don’t like desserts that are overly sweet, and their Banoffee pie was light yet flavorful, with a beautifully balanced layered texture, not just physically but also in taste: A crispy biscuit base A thin layer of caramel A thin layer of fresh banana A very light, cheese-like cream as the core Each layer stood out on its own yet matched perfectly with the others, creating a harmonious and delightful bite every time. ✨ A huge thank you to the chef team for their professional cooking, and to the management and floor staff for their sincere service. ✨ At Howies, they don’t just serve great meals—they create a truly exceptional dining experience. Overall, an unforgettable meal! A heartfelt thank you to Bee, Olivia, Sarah, and Karen, and the entire team for their warm hospitality and dedication. We now understand why people are willing to line up for Howies, and if we visit Edinburgh again, we’ll definitely be back!

A mixed experience. My smoked salmon starter was thrown on the plate with not much care and a big pile of plain salad leaves, though my chicken main was delicious and my partner enjoyed his steak. The letdown was the service. We were served by three different people, which meant it was all a little detached. The young lady who served us was very nice, and the lady (I think she was the boss) was friendly, though she charged us for a bottle of still water rather than offering us a jug as was offered to every other table around us. The man who served us seemed to have a bit of an attitude, and was quite rude and abrupt. Also, a small thing, but everyone else around us got shortbread with their bill and we didn't! Overall, I wouldn't rush back. The food wasn't anything out of the ordinary that you couldn't get in many other places, and the service let the place down - we didn't feel particularly welcome or wanted there. We learned about this restaurant through the recommendation of a guide on an excursion to the “Highlands”. We made the table reservation a couple of hours before in person. They were very flexible since I could see that the place has a high influx of customers, but it is not surprising, the place is incredible. (I point out that the photos were taken when we finished eating and they were about to close). -The atmosphere is very cozy, with warm lighting and I highlight the detail that, at least when I was there, the spaces between the different tables were delimited by transparent screens, something that I really liked. Another aspect that I could appreciate and value positively is how impeccable the bathrooms are. They have 3 and they are cleaned regularly, specifically every hour. -The service and customer attention of each of the team members is excellent. Everyone cares that your experience is the best, they check with you a couple of times if everything is okay or if you need to make a request. They work quickly, friendly, efficient and coordinated. -The food is varied, made with good quality products and within their menu they have Menus for £18.95 in which you can order a main course and a dessert. In my case, I chose “Risotto” and my companions chose the “Pan fried fillet of Scottish salmon”. Both of us concluded that the food was delicious and a good amount was served. For dessert I ordered “Howies famous banoffee pie” as a recommendation from one of the waitresses who served our table. Without a doubt, following his advice was a success. It is a cake-like slice with a soft texture and a powerful banana and chocolate flavor in a solid cookie base. We were very happy with how comfortable we were, the treatment we were offered by the team and the quality of the food. “Congratulations.”

The soup was very delicious although it was very noticeable that it had cream, I personally didn't like the haggis very much (neither texture nor flavour, too spicy) and the dessert was very delicious although perhaps a little cloying. We went to try Scottish food but left somewhat disappointed despite the good reviews of the place. Maybe we went with too high expectations. Some dishes are adapted to gluten-free diets, as is my case, but perhaps they should have offered me more bread rolls to use with the starter. On the other hand, the main ones, I really liked the salmon, but the portions may be a little small. On the other hand, the risotto was really bland and without much flavor, we didn't like it at all. Reception is either racist or doesn’t know any thing about hospitality. When I stepped inside and passed a family of five to see the women at the reception desk, smiling and saying hi, I wanted to ask where would be the place for waiting for a seat or if there are any seats. So the receptionist made eye contact with me and then without any verbal reply or any smile she shoved me aside to talk to the family waiting. It was just very rude to shove someone aside without saying something like “would you mind waiting over there” or “please stand over there”. Fun fact, no one looking for food on a cold day would like to be silently disciplined because they stepped in front of the reception desk. Might have been good Scottish food but I won’t find out due to being silently pushed aside. One star.

From the moment we sat at the table until the bill was brought to us, everything was perfect. We ordered a Cullen Skink as a starter, and it was delicious, with that traditional Scottish flavor that we were looking for. For the main course, the salmon was just right, fresh and juicy, while the grilled chicken had that smoky flavor that made it irresistible. We accompanied the meal with Rioja wine and a cold pilsner that completed the experience. I loved the charitable touch of including a donation to the Trussell Trust in the account; a detail that makes one feel good about contributing while enjoying a great meal. Plus, the artisan bread was a simple but delicious accompaniment. The service was impeccable: fast, attentive and with a smile. Cullen skink was not creamy enough which was a bit disappointing. Squash risotto was just okay. However salmon was really good. The banoffee pie was good whereas it didn’t contain much banana pieces and tasted like a cheese cake. I’d recommend apple crumble which was the most delicious of all the dishes we ordered. The service was great however we felt tricked when we just took a seat and the waitress asked if we wanted still water or sparkling water. As soon as we realised we should have ordered tap water, she opened the bottle and filled up the glasses with water very quickly that we had no chance to change our mind…Who would like to pay for water when free tap water is available? The waitress should have asked if we’d like tap water rather than just saying still or sparkling.

The food was first class and enjoyed by everyone. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant, we all had a great time. Go here, you will not be disappointed.

The experience was spoiled by their current indoor fly problem 🪰. We had numerous (5 at one time) flies lingering around us and it got worse once our main arrived. I really don’t like to make a fuss but I felt so overwhelmed eating around them, it made me feel dirty. If I had known about the problem I wouldn’t have eaten here, I wish we were informed in advance or on arrival so we could have made the decision to leave without making a big deal of things (because they’re already aware of the problem). In hindsight I should have left once my main arrived which is when it started to really upset me but I didn’t want to ruin a nice trip for my partner who is much more chill about eating around flies apparently 😂 I did inform somebody about the problem and they did acknowledge that they were already aware of the fly issue and are working on resolving it by ‘treating it at night’. They moved us tables but the problem did not entirely go away although it did improve with just a few interrupting visitors 🪰😔 Given that it is winter and flies cannot survive these cold temperatures, it’s clear they’re nesting somewhere in the building. So if flies disgust you as they do me just go to the other Howies or else where.

Restaurant 100% recommended for celiacs. It's amazing how well we ate, and how attentive they were with the whole gluten issue. Delicious, homemade food. Celiacs and gluten-sensitives passing through Edinburgh, this is your place!

Howies on Victoria Street is amazing. I want give a HUGE shout out and THANK YOU to Jess, our waitstaff, for the best, fast, courteous, and fun service on 8 December 2024. Jess has the greatest attitude and helpful tips on dining in Edinburgh. On to the food: Five stars is not enough. I give the focaccio, selection of olives, the butternut risotto with salmon, and their feather light banana custard pie a ten. The Lane Chardonnay is recommended! Perfect atmosphere. We lucked into a very short wait, without a reservation, and we were given a beautiful window view of Victoria Street, after dark, with all the Christmas lights. Kudos.

A spectacular atmosphere, in addition, they treat you like at home, they speak Spanish, and the quality/price dishes are very good, without a doubt to repeat, Scott served us with great treatment.

I recommend choosing the menu. Very good quality-price ratio. Compared to similar restaurants in the area. In particular, I recommend the salmon and the haggis starter. Also, we choose a homemade bread that was spectacular The dessert was a pudding with sticky, toffie and vanilla ice cream that was delicious. Very pleasant and attentive service. The bathrooms were very clean. After finishing the trip through Edinburgh, we chose this as our number 1 restaurant.

I recently discovered a hidden gem in Endborough through Google Reviews, and it truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment I stepped inside, the warm, welcoming atmosphere gave me a sense of genuine hospitality that’s rare to find. The Scottish cuisine was a standout—each dish was thoughtfully prepared, showcasing the rich flavors of the region. This is definitely a restaurant I’ll be returning to on my next visit to the city. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic dining experience!

Absolutely love this restaurant! They are consistently packed, but treat you like you’re the only customers in the place. The food is always top notch - everything I’ve had in my three visits has been outstanding. A nice twist on traditional Scottish fare such as haggis. Oh and the banoffee pie is as good as they say it is! The early evening set menu is a real bargain, but prices are reasonable at other times too. A real gem in the heart of Edinburgh

We always pass by Howie’s whenever we are in Edinburgh. We’ve ordered different items from their menu and we’re never disappointed. Their haggis is a must try. The staff are always attentive and friendly. Great atmosphere.

Delish food and large portions at a great price. They offer 2 and 4 course options at £20-30ish respectively. We got the Haggis and Cullen sink to start which were both excellent. We had the salmon and the Venison casserole as our mains. The salmon was great. We were expecting the venison to be a casserole/pie but it was more like a stew with lots of beets. While the meat was cooked nicely, it was a bit much.

Magnificent place to eat traditional Scottish food. All the dishes we have tried have been fantastic, it is essential to try the Haggis from this place. They offer both lunch and dinner menus that make the quality/price one of the best in the center. We went on the recommendation of our guide and it was a complete success.

Place is very good and had a pre-set 3 course menu for 24 pounds which was a steal and got a lot of food (app + entree + dessert). Cute vibes on victoria st and had available seats and the only wait was 30 mins for 4 people. Staff was friendly and helpful and food was great for the price!

I previously visited Howie's other branch a few years ago with friends and had a fantastic time, five star food, restaurant and service. So, when booking a trip to Edinburgh for my mum and sister the opportunity to visit this branch was a no brainer. However, sadly l felt like an idiot for booking such a bad meal and let my family down. The toilets were dirty with over filling bins upon opening and a lot of the food was served cold. My mum didn't eat anything so the kind and polite staff were kind enough to refund her meal and we left after one course. However, I'm still really sad about this as l had such a lovely time previously. What happened Howies?

The main course (vegetarian haggis) and desert (banoffee pie) were excellent. The staff was very friendly. Given the crowds, reservations are recommended.

We went there two days ago and the waitress told us that we advise you to book in advance, as our tables are always crowded We booked a day in advance The menu contains delicious traditional Scottish dishes We chose fish soup called (cullen skink) and (haggis) parts of lamb with mashed potatoes, the most famous Scottish dishes. And a fresh beef burger We concluded it with the most delicious English dessert, banoffee pie, as the restaurant is distinguished by its elaborate preparation. The service is good and the waiters are kind. They brought two biscuits with the bill

Lovely spot right next to Waverly. Great views, Interesting cocktails and good nibbles. It can be as fancy and pricey as you want, making it a great sunset date spot, though book beforehand and maybe suggest a private nook.

Had a fantastic time at Baba! The flavors were incredible—so many bold and exciting combinations. The carrots with tahini sauce were a surprise standout, and the sweet potato and pork dishes were delicious! A big shoutout to McKinley—an absolute legend. Fun, engaging, great chat, and spot-on with food recommendations. He really made the experience even better.

Great option for anyone who needs to eat gluten free, as a coeliac I had a great meal and experience here. We were craving British Asian takeaway food and it definitely satisfied the craving! Service was friendly and quick.
