Been visiting the Hotel du Vin for several years for our annual Christmas gathering with long time friends and we return year on year as it’s always been good. How ever our most recent experience was not up-to the usual standards. The service in the bar for pre dinner drinks was very slow , and we waited for almost 20 minutes for a round of drinks. The selection of draught beers was also very poor (2). The table was a large , square and well decorated but again the service was slow. When we had ordered our food the portion sizes for the starters and mains were on the small side and some of the main dishes were very over cooked ( chicken schnitzel) or the roasted cod was very small, ( we sent this back). Some of the menus supplied were not complete, with pages missing and we were informed at the time of the booking that there would be two menus to select from, including a Christmas one. Turns out it was roast turkey or nothing! All in all very disappointing, and definitely not worth the money for what we had come to experience over the last few years. Service needs to improve as does the value for money experience before we decide if we should re5urn next year.

Went on a Friday night for dinner with 6 of us. Got told several things were not available and low on others. Asked if they could reserve the last steak for us but they didn't. Service was bad and slow. Starters hardly any prawns in the prawn cocktail. No bread with the soup. When we asked for some got charged £7.50 for the privilege. The steak which we could order was not cooked as requested. Also had to add fries as it didn't come with any potatoes. Wrong as expensive in the first place. Didn't bother with desserts as fed up by then. Won't be hurrying back.

Some friends and I planned to get together for a pre-Christmas dinner at Winchester’s HdV on Friday 6th December 2024. I duly made the reservation in mid September and received confirmation at the time. Yesterday (1st November), the hotel contacted me to apologise as they were cancelling my table because they had received a request to book the entire restaurant for a private party. It is a completely unacceptable way to treat customers and I told them so. I have been taking friends and family there for years, but never again. I have managed to get a booking at Brasserie Blanc but it’s for later in the evening than we preferred. I have also made a further booking there rather at HdV.

Love the hotel we’ve stayed a few times now, but have to say I was a little disappointed in a few things this time, Location to get to town centre is perfect it’s literally a 5 minute walk We had a garden room which was divine apart from the air conditioning, didn’t seem to be blowing any cold air but we did have a small table top fan, be careful of the hot water it’s very very hot We booked Sunday lunch for us and my sister and brother-in-law at 2.30 and were absolutely shocked and disappointed to discover there were no roast potatoes, new potatoes were delivered to our table after we asked where our potatoes where only to be told they had run out, who has a roast with no roasts 🤷‍♀️

The worst hotel we have Ever stayed in. The staff were the best part. We had one of the most expensive rooms and were so,looking forward to our stay/break. Well…. The bath was in the bedroom and at the age of 82 and 76 NOT what is desirable and the shower room didn’t have a hand held shower attachment, so I couldn’t even freshen up in there, as I HATE over head showers. The loo had no loo brush or a hand towel in there. There were wedding parties on the 2 nights we were there, and we were not warned and we overlooked the courtyard that they spilled out onto, so no sleep until it was over. I made a bed in the shower base to get away from the loud music on both nights. Breakfast was one of the best for a hotel, the dinner of fillet steak we both left at least half of. Could never recommend The Hotel du Vin in Winchester to anyone ever, so I would never go to another.

This was a very disappointing experience from the moment we stepped through the door. There were three staff at reception, talking to each other and eventually one spoke to us over the heads of the other two members of staff. Last time we came to the Hotel du Vin all the staff were polite and courteous, greeting guests with a “good evening”. This continued when we went through to the restaurant. Four members of the waiting staff ignored us and walked past us until eventually someone seated us. The waitress serving us was very nice but needed the training and direction of a competent senior member of staff. The food was poor (mine was greasy and tasted of poor quality vegetable oil), massively overpriced and some of it we were told was “out of stock”. The loud music from a wedding at the hotel was audible (they could have shut the door) and we had wedding guests walking through the bistro to get between different areas of the wedding. All of this rather ruined the atmosphere. The Hotel du Vin used to be a lovely venue in Winchester and the staff and food were both excellent. The original founders would be appalled (and so were we). The price point was far higher than the competence and quality of the offering.

Afternoon tea with a girl friend at the hotel du vin. There was plenty to eat - several rounds of sandwiches, little cakes and scones with cream and jam. Tea and coffee too, obviously, but really horrible hot chocolate. A nice atmosphere and quietly attentive service. Not cheap - £29.95 each. A nice enough experience.

We went for the Sunday roast. The service was horrible throughout. The poor service ended with waiting 40 minutes for the bill, at which point we had to flag someone down and insist on paying so we could leave. They did not keep the French market table stocked. The French market table is included in the Sunday roast price, it is a table with salads/soups/meats/cheeses/shrimp. It was ravaged by prior guests and not maintained. We left very disappointed.

Trading on a name that is somewhat tainted. Visited this restaurant over the weekend with friends. So very disappointed by the place Poor service, poor food, no care. Had to ask and remind staff at every turn. Sides didn’t turn up with main course and when the did, they were cold. Had to remind staff about a drinks order. 45 minutes after our main course plates were cleared, I had to ask the waitress if the restaurant had stopped serving desserts.: Waitress: “No sir, why” me: “so why has no one bothered to offer us one” With So many great options in Winchester why would I ever choose this, or indeed any other Hotel du Vin again???

On the plus side the service from the waitress was good, very helpful and polite. On the negative, glass of champagne had lost its fizz, I suggested that it had been opened the day before which was confirmed by the duty sommelier/manager, who then told me that as a brut champagne it didn’t have much fizz. When the waitress asked me if everything was alright I explained that I had just had an mri scan and that the beef bourguignon tasted bland. I stated that the trace that had been injected may have affected my taste buds. She passed this on to afore-mentioned manager who again sort of defended and asked me why I didn’t like it. This was the seventh time I had dined here in 2023, twice before my guest had complained about the food. So to be honest, the location service and ambiance is a plus, food is memorable for the wrong reasons.

We went recently to celebrate a family member’s birthday and were seated at a nice table, the Christmas decorations were very pretty and the food was delicious. Unfortunately everything else was poor. The service was terrible and I mean really really bad; no one looked like they had a clue where they were or what they were meant to be doing. We waited 30 minutes before a waitress came to take our order without actually ever giving us menus. The food was brought out completely randomly with people’s orders being randomly scattered across the table and the staff having no idea which dishes accompanied which order, let alone what they actually were. We had to wait 30 minutes for our drink orders and when we ordered dessert, were told that 3/4 of our orders were sold out so no longer available. The bill was practically unrecognisable and off by around £60, so we had to get this corrected this too. It was basically chaos. The only thing that doesn’t let the restaurant down is the food, aside from that I don’t understand how it still operates to be honest. I’m sorry to leave such a negative review but it was a real let down and I felt sorry for the person who had chosen to spend their birthday meal there.

The days of good dinning with a welcoming service associated with the 'Hotel du Vin' , are gone. The 'brand' is still there but the bistro food is certainly not special. However, it was the table service that was simply woeful, and despite 'best effort' from a handful of young inexperienced staff (part time ?) who would clearly have benefited from the presence, and direction, of any management (night off?). From entering we had to continuously work at getting service.....offered only water upon arrival but no drinks menu - that came with our prompting along with the the food menu 30 minutes later. We ordered cocktails - but after yet another looong wait they eventually arrived, but after the starters were finished ! ......and so we continued to work at getting attention throughout a laborious slow meal service. There were other stange 'foopahs' i.e. wrong spoons , no spoon etc.etc....and these basic expectations on top of everything else are a stretch to dismiss as 'one-offs' - ref. other reviews . Memorable for all the wrong reasons - very disappointing.

The BEST service! Attentive, friendly, impressive. Of special note is Minty the bartender...top notch! The grilled chicken with the addition of the pepper sauce was sublime (16.50/3.00). An extensive wine list showcasing wines from around the world. Both traditional and New World. The pot au chocolate for dessert, 7.50, was just the right size for a small treat to go with coffee after lunch. The texture/quality/taste (not too sweet) was the perfect balance. Will I return? Absolutely! I plan to try a beef dish. Their beef is sourced from a high quality butcher, the animals are grass fed. The beef is hung on the bone, the traditional way for maturing.Their butcher hand cuts their meat. Did I mention the service? Seriously! Some of the BEST service that I have had Southern England. It is obvious that this bistro cares about the food they serve and the people they serve it to.

Good and bad. Start with the good. Very clean, crisp sheets and beautifully soft feather duvet and pillows. Deco modern and colourful. The barhroom was also beautiful with complimentary l'occitaine toiletries - as much as you need. Lovely lindor chocolates and nespresso coffee machine at your disposal. Now for the rub. On check out I wasn't asked if everything had been ok with our stay. That was part of the problem - there was a feel of apathy with reception. It felt understaffed. When I asked for an extra towel and pillow, it felt like I was asking too much as it was the man on reception who had to deal with the request. Reception never answered the phone as they were always running around the hotel. The bath didnt drain properly, consequently we had to stand in soapy water whilst showering and the water pressure was pretty bad. The bed was way too soft and i had to sleep with a pillow wedged under my lower back to prevent back pain. My 16 year old son said he had back pain the next day due to the soft bed. Breakfast buffet choice was fairly limited considering it was £20 per head and as the hid the cheese and ham in the kitchen (you have to specifically ask for it) I forgot to have any. No one reminds you about it. However the breakfast waiting staff were lovely and the setting was beautiful.

Our overall experience was positive, we had access to the parking, the outside yard was stunning and nicely decorated with bunch of flowers on the table and beautiful lights. The bar was totally full as a wedding party was on on this day. The staff was pleasant, and polite and we loved their uniforms. However due to this wedding, our order wasn’t taken promptly and we had to wait about 10 minutes. We had 4 drinks and the bartender made me an excellent old fashion and a very disappointing passion fruit martini that was made with pineapple juice… Why would they put pineapple juice in a passion fruit martini? This is a classic cocktail! and this was not great at all! I would strongly suggest the HOD to modify this cocktail recipe standard

We booked in for afternoon tea, after visiting the Christmas market in December. On arrival, the receptionist took us through to the bistro, but the Maître D was nowhere to be seen. After waiting for a couple of minutes, the receptionist guessed our table and successfully seated us. On arriving, the Maître D doubled up as the waiter. He was disinterested from the start. On the afternoon tea arriving, there was no explanation as to what the various items were and nor any follow up to see how we were getting on or if we wanted any additional drinks etc. We then had to wait for some time for the Maître D to reappear to get the bill. All of this slap-dash service was bizarre, considering we were quite literally the only ones in the bistro. The bistro really lacked atmosphere. Perhaps others have heard of the poor service and so avoid the place? On leaving, we asked for our uneaten sweet treats to be boxed up so we could take them home with us … they’d run out of boxes, so we were given a paper bag to take them home in?! We won’t be returning and couldn’t recommend the place. Which is a shame considering we are currently looking at wedding venues and this was a potential choice!

A beautiful building, located at the top of the city. Can imagine this place a thriving bistro restaurant in its prime. Hotel Du Vin, I remember , had such a great reputation in the 90’s. We booked with our new neighbors for a Sunday lunch. Lovely welcome, nice to have a pre-lunch drink in the bar, increased our expectations of a great Sunday lunch. We sat slightly late, and was amazed how quite it was. We promptly order and all went for the roast beef, ordered a good bottle of wine. Firstly, the wine, was actually quit chilled definitely not at room temperature, luckily the mains took a while to allow it to warm up. The beef was really disappointing, quite rare, we don’t mind that, but very very chewy. The roast potatoes again disappointing, not fluffy inside but actually quite hard and not crisp at all. Vegetables uninspired as well. The only positive was the depth of flavor in the gravy. Desserts, not that great either. A good sticky toffee pudding or a bread and butter pudding would have been better on the menu. Overall, disappointing lunch and won’t rush back. However, their afternoon tea does look good value so this may be an option. Service, apart from the cold wine, was smiley and gracious and very good.

No butter given with the scones and the jam was nothing that you can’t get in your supermarket. One pot of tea given between two and no offer of a top up. Overall a little disappointing- expected a little better for the money.

We booked our stay at Hotel du Vin Winchester in mid July and put in a request to upgrade our booking from a standard room to a superior. I also emailed asking for recommendations of places to visit, as this was our first visit to Winchester. A few days later I received a reply confirming our upgrade and a list of local recommendations. However, on arrival we were informed that our upgrade request could not be honoured as all superior rooms were fully booked. Despite the confirmation I had received we were given apologies and told there was nothing further that could be done. Fair enough, this was obvious human error and, despite our obvious disappointment, didn’t need to dampen our stay. Having previously stayed in Hotel du Vins in both Brighton and York, I expected that a standard room would still offer a comfortable and luxurious stay. On entering hour room, we were pleased to find it both spacious and comfortable looking. However, on closer inspection, we could see evidence of some of the wear and tear and neglect mentioned in some other reviews. Considering the severe impact Covid 19 has had on the hotel industry, we understand that funds might not be readily available for renovation and redecoration work. However, this is definitely something Hotel du Vin Winchester needs to consider, if it is to maintain the standards of its other hotels. One thing that definitely did not disappoint was dinner in their bistro. Both my Moroccan lamb and my husband’s rabbit pappardelle were delicious. Upon check out, I was presented with a bill for the beverages we’d had at the bar, on arrival, while we were waiting for management to deal (unsuccessfully) with the room mix up. (I’d had a tea and my husband a beer.) I expressed my surprise at being issued with this bill as I had presumed these drinks to be a small, complementary gesture in light of the room issue. The lady on reception then agreed not to charge us and appeared to appreciate the principle of the matter. Overall, a pleasant stay at Hotel du Vin Winchester but not the finest example of the HDV chain.

The waiter seemed very inexperienced and out of his depth (understaffed perhaps?). Pigeon was overcooked and tough, salmon overcooked, pork fatty and "crackling" inedidle as it was too soggy. Unfortunately for them I am a Michelin starred trained chef and, although my expectations were not great, I can tell you that the pigeon and pork were reheated hence the appalling result. I contacted the hotel to discuss my disappointment but they failed to reply, which clearly shows their lack of concern. Just avoid this level of service!

The menu hasn't really changed over the last year, which you might not think strange, but when there is such a limited choice on it you will soon realise the difference this makes, 3 steaks, 4 mains and 4 fish options.... that's it! The organisation is pretty poor also good cooking out with items not ready having to wait 10 mins for the sides to come after the main dish has arrived, things like that spoil the whole experience for a place claiming to be so good.

I held a baby shower here today in the Lombard room. The team from the moment I arrived were beyond attentive. I had a lot to set up and everyone was so helpful ensuring I had everything I needed and even went as far as helping to blow up balloons! The meal was fantastic and everything went like clockwork and nothing was too much trouble for every member of staff. I have never experienced such great customer service. Thank you so much for making the day perfect!

I stayed at the hotel for 4 days while my husband was at a conference. These kind people let me eat and drink their wine whenever I asked even when the restaurant was closed. Great wine list. I ate the salmon and cucumber tartine as well as the french onion soup. There is a beautiful courtyard suitable for reading and drinking wine if weather permits. Highly recommend!

Hotel du Vins are generally very good and so was this one. Katarzuna our waitress was superb and explained the dishes very well. The onion soup was very nice with a thick cheese topping. I then had a fillet steak cooked just right. My wife had sole meunière which was very good. Shared an ice cream to finish with. All in all a good evening.

Located within two blocks of great shopping on High Street, and walking distance to Winchester Cathedral, this charming hotel was the perfect choice! The hotel staff was very efficient, friendly, ready to assist with all requests, and seemed to function as a team. Our room was impressively clean, and well stocked (with food and drink available for purchase), good air conditioning, and the most comfortable bed ever! The bath had a lovely towel warmer that made it feel quite luxurious. The gardens and grounds were very well manicured with great outdoor seating areas for nice weather days. The room was only surpassed by the bistro dining experience. From a three course sumptuous meal to breakfast fit for a king. We enjoyed the Hotel du Vin in every capacity and have already made plans to return when next we are in the U.K.

Booked this Bistro for my husbands birthday, got a great on-line deal, and was looking forward to it all week. We had a lovely 3 course meal. The problem came when ordering extra drinks, one reason or another my husband, whose birthday meal we were celebrating never actually received his drinks! The staff were lovely and very apologetic, but it wasn’t great that I had my drink and he didn’t have one. They did reduce our bill by 10% to reflect the issue. But sadly we had to move onto a local pub to get the missed drink. Such a same. Not a great first impression. But the food was lovely

We were staying in the hotel, so booked for dinner. As others have said the garden is lovely with really private feeling. The restaurant was quiet. On arriving inside the young lady was doing something obviously very important on her computer as she found it really hard to acknowledge us! She eventually asked us to hold on for a minute while she continued with the computer. At this stage we offered to come back later but she said no need so we hung about for a bit.

This was a buisiness dinner for 5 people, the place has a lot of charm, we sat in the garden as it was a hot evening, the initial service by a waitress was good but it wnt down hill as the other waiters did not seem to be trained, they may have been new starters but simple things like having to ask for place mats for the table, could be very good with a bit of staff training.

I booked the restaurant for a Sunday lunch via a groupon coupon site. We hadn't seen our friends for a while so we had a lot to talk about and our Sunday lunch was fantastic. The menu was a mixture of French, English and Spanish cooking and we went for the standard 4 course menu. Soup starter which was simple but tasted fantastic, lovely French bread and lovely English butter. The Salad buffet (2nd course) had fresh salmon, fresh prawns, lovely salads with brocolli and cashews, homemade scotch eggs and sausage rolls, along with a Spanish leg of pork. Just a delightful choice and not too overpowering the taste buds. Main course we all chose the traditional beef and yorkshire puddings with lovely vegetables and roast potatoes. We all had a wonderful meal and a wonderful time with very good food, well done.

Service was excellent throughout our brief stay and the room was tastefully decorated and of a good size with a large bathroom. We were a large group with a set menu so not really typical. The space was pleasant and the staff efficient though not very friendly. My starter was a ham pate, very dull but saved by a sharp relish. The bread was 1st class. He had very dry smoked mackerel followed by undercooked (number 1 sin) aubergine main course. Now my neck of lamb was tender and tasty if somewhat salty accompanied by a salad in an inedible potato skin, very strange. We both had a chocolate pie which was the best. So it was a curate's egg, good in parts.

Beautiful old and quirky building which I really liked, the rooms are a bit creaky and unusual but I think this adds to the character of the hotel and experience. We booked directly with the Hotel (not the Offers) the Saver Bed and Breakfast and added the 3 course Prix Fixe Dinner and a Glass of Wine (the Best Price Calendar on the website is useful). The booking process was smooth and very quick responses by the Hotel Reception with any questions pre-stay. Reception also provided an early check-in without any additional charge. The standard and superior rooms were clean and comfortable with L'Occitane and a Nespresso coffee machines, it's the detail that makes your stay that bit more enjoyable :-) We enjoyed Happy Hour drinks between 5-7pm in the Hotel's bar and dinner was delicious. The Hotel's location is walking distance to Winchester City Center; the Cathedral, the College and the House where Jane Austin lived her last days. You can also travel to Chawton, where Jane Austin lived and wrote (approx 30mins drive). Just to note; if you're staying during the busy season, I would recommend checking with the Hotel on available parking spaces, as the car park is quite small. For the price, this reservation exceeded our expectation and we would definitely return.

Having stayed in several other hotels in the group we were expecting high standards however we left disappointed . Our name wasn’t even taken when we arrived slightly early just abruptly told we couldn’t check in until 3pm . Room was lovely although in need of a lick of paint . Curtains however needed to be blackout as allowed far too much light in to sleep well. We had booked dinner in the bistro for our first night and decided to have a drink in the bar before hand . On going in there were no staff in attendance and we waited at least 15 mins before giving up and going to the restaurant . Staff were again in short supply although appeared that some diners had slightly more attention than others . My husband had chosen pig cheeks from the specials which was ok until he found a chicken thigh bone and chicken in the dish .This was pointed out to staff and the dinner removed from the bill. I had the duck shepherds pie but unfortunately the skin had not been removed from the duck and this was inedible . Before getting our main we asked for some wine which we eventually got after we’d finished eating as the bar man seemed more keen on serving champagne to one particular couple. Things didn’t improve at breakfast again no staff around and ignored by reception staff when we tried to ask about seating for breakfast . We expected much more from the Hotel du Vin as not been disappointed when staying at other sites .

From the moment we stepped foot in Wickham Estate - we knew it would be the most perfect venue for our Wedding. Despite the rain and cold (in August!!), the surroundings were beautiful, the staff were friendly and the venue itself was elegant, charming and full of character. Little did we know that a year on, we would have the most perfect day of our lives with blue skies and bright sunshine! From the outset, the customer service was impeccable. We were guided through every decision with knowledge and expertise from all the wedding co-ordinators and we can't thank Keira, in particular, enough for going above and beyond. She may us feel like the only people who have ever got married there making every moment so special. Hannah and the team at Exquisite Caterers were just as professional, approachable and helpful not to mention some of the most delicious food we've ever had! A huge shout out to the wine as well! We chose the venue because of the amazing location and how picturesque it was and didn't expect to have such incredible wine as well! The whole day ran smoothly and even if something went wrong, we would never have known! The staff worked tirelessly to make it unforgettable. The atmosphere was amazing; the day was full of fun and laughter and nothing was too much or too complicated for the team at Wickham Estate. I have to make a special mention again to Kiera; I have never seen someone work so hard to make every moment one to remember. It felt like we had known us for years! She took the time to listen to us and get to know us and totally understood our vibe and concept, she communicated between suppliers and our family to get everything in place and sorted whilst making the morning of the wedding stress free for the Bride and Groom. If we could get married again, every year at Wickham Estate - we most definitely would! Thank you to the everyone for the most perfect day!
