We’d long considered giving the quiz a go so decided to last Sunday. This is a decent pub that serves a nice pint with friendly staff. The quiz was good and we’ll definitely return.

Awful service was rude and insulting, made our party leave because the landlady’s cat was coming over to the table. Charged me for a drink and then refused to serve it, and the owners daughter serving was vile, foul-mouthed and rude. Absolutely never would go here again and recommend everyone to stay far away from this shambles of a so called pub.

Visited last night for a drink with my husband. We currently live on the other side of town but are planning to move just a few doors down soon, so wanted to try out what will (fingers crossed) be our new local. What a pleasure to find such a welcoming, cosy traditional pub. The bar man was friendly as was the lady clearing tables. The fact that there were only two seats free said it all. It was our first visit to this hidden gem but are hoping the first of many .

We came here in quite a large group - 20 odd people and 12 dogs - for a post walk drink and lunch on a Sunday. We were all so impressed. This is an idyllic local, wonderful friendly landlord and staff, great food (Sunday roast), also great value (food and drink), extremely clean, very welcoming, very relaxing atmosphere. If you haven't been in the last 12 months (since the new landlord took over), I thoroughly recommend the H&J as a stellar local pub. It's not quite my actual local but it's going to be the place we do pop into in Wilmslow from now on.

I called into the H&J with a friend after a bike ride round the Cheshire lanes. You could not ask for a more welcoming pub. When I look for somewhere to eat I always go on first impression including outside appearance, cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. The H&J excelled on all of these. The pub looks welcoming, is very clean and tidy and the landlord and landlady were extremely friendly and found time to chat and explain the history of the pub.We had a bite to eat off the excellent and very well priced menu and this was served promptly and was delicious. If you are in the area then pop into this lovely pub and support an excellent local business.

Great location but lacks atmosphere. It seems to have changed hands a lot through the years but the latest landlord came across welcoming. It’s a dog friendly pub too so our pooch was elated to be given a doggy treat and a bowl of water. The Beer garden is small however the sun shined so we were happy. #splendid

I phoned to ask if we were able to take our dog and the landlady advised we were very welcome to, but due to a problem with a supplier the full menu wasn't available. She was very apologetic and suggested that we might prefer to try a different night to avoid being disappointed but as we were only in the area that night I said we would still come and I'm glad we did. The staff were very welcoming indeed and the Green Thai Curry and Meatballs were delicious. We then decided to share a Lemon Tart and Chocolate Fudge Cake but couldn't decide on cream or ice-cream so were offered both, but we were very pleasantly surprised when the lovely young man serving us decided to bring us a sharing plate with an additional chocolate tart and strawberry ice cream as well.

Firstly I will start with why I haven't given this place five stars. Too many change-overs in such a short space of time! It gets confusing as the menus are all over the place and the Internet information is incorrect (actually I'm not even sure anymore?) BUT this pub has a lot of promise; since its been redecorated it feels much more homely and warm, I feel like with some care and attention this pub could be a real gem, maybe a "foodies" pub for those who like a a nice meal and a pint. Stick with the original theme when this place was first reopened and maybe do a few promotional nights or events and I have faith that this pub will do well.

This is our nearest pub so really wanted it to work after the refit. The place is really nicely done inside and out but just seems to lack atmosphere. Go up to the Coach & Four to see how it's done. They have it right on so many levels but this place could easily copy them. I would suggest firstly lowering the lighting, no-one wants a brightly lit pub. Secondly turn the music up a bit, awkward silences are not attractive. Also, why not try a dartboard, or a tv, or pub games? There is a massive catchment area of all sorts of people from young families to older people. They should be catering to these people & not pandering to the 'no sky sports, no kids' brigade.

Not sure where some of the other reviewers on here where, but our experience of the Horse and Jockey is quite different to many of the claims being made here.We visited on a weekday lunch time, the welcome was warm and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The real ale was in excellent condition. The food was exceptional for a chain pub and at £9.95 for a two course meal, it is not expensive. The place is well appointed and very clean. No sports TV and on the occasion of our visit, no unruly kids using the place as a play ground! All in all a great experience which I'm sure we will return to soon.

What a wasted opportunity for a local pub in such a friendly community to be so indifferent to their customers. I want to love it here. I go frequently and am getting tired of the unfriendly landlord. There is a lovely barmaid there but if she is not there you are lucky to get a smile. I am giving it another chance and then going to walk the extra mile to The Coach and Four. Come on Horse & Jockey! This is not the friendly local it used to be.

Having just completed the Race for Life yesterday a large group of us (26 adults & children) had arranged to go to the Horse & Jockey for a celebration drink and lunch. We had let the Landlord know 3 times that we would be coming and we were met with a very cold welcome! The bar staff were totally miserable and very rude when asked for assistance. The children were told off and the general atmosphere was very unwelcoming. Considering we were all wanting to celebrate our achievement it definitely put a dampner on things. After the pub was refurbished we and may local people supported the pub and the landlady was so welcoming and lovely. I really think that something needs to be done to improve the attitude of the management & staff and the speed of service, as so many people no longer want to go there because of it. The breweries website talks about Community,Pride & Appeal which certainly is not what the Horse & Jockey are delivering. Has the potential to be an amazing local pub!

We tried the H & J to see what the new management & chef were offering. I would'nt say we had the friendliest of welcomes, but the food was very good. Quite a varied and interesting menu, from which we all tried something different. It is a pub atmosphere, but then, it is a pub! Really tasty food, well prepared, the chef has talent, and seems to enjoy his work - always helps I think. Main critisism is we had to lay the table ourselves.

Very disappointed with the non-existent service! We booked for 6.30 pm on a Saturday evening. We usually go to the Riflemans (excellent food, service and quality). Tonight was the launch of the Riflemans new ownership and we decided to try the Horse and Jockey for the second time due to the Riflemans being very busy. We arrived to find "you might get a table round the corner!" Not what I'd expect when we'd booked. If there isn't a booking facility then shouldn't that be outlined upon trying to book via the phone? We'd been told we had a booking via the phone. We then found a comfortable table and upon my husband getting drinks we were told we'd have around a 15 minute wait until our orders would be taken. No problem! Around 20 minutes later my husband had to seek out the sole waitress for menus, I would have hoped she realised we wanted to eat - our behaviour in requesting a menu would surely outline this. Another 20 minutes later, having tried to attract the waitresses attention on a couple of occasions we decided to leave having waited to receive some kind of hospitality! I wonder what the system is for ordering? We were going to complain but upon looking at the other side of the pub, which seemed quieter at that point, I can only imagine that there is no booking system! We shall not be returning for food and this experience can only go to highlight how lucky we are to have an excellent pub such as the Riflemans nearby. They provide good service and excellent food. I suggest the person responsible for service attends the Riflemans to discover best practice for customer service. We shall now be purchasing a delicious curry from the Ruby on Grove Lane.

Visited the re vamped Horse & Jockey in Wilmslow expecting great things after its I believe £300,000 re vamp. It was the steak night special for £25. For that you get two excellent steaks, with a few chips nestling for some odd reason in a tin enamel mug! A peppercorn sauce was served in a mini gravy boat and mine had the grand total of three peppercorns! Also in the package came a bottle of so-so wine. In total quiet good, well cooked, but it needed a vegetable to complete the plate. Two tapas were ordered and because we did not order the packages of 4 or more, the individual price of each tapas dish shot up. One dessert was ordered of sticky toffee pudd. It was frankly Yuk! There were no dates in the mix and the top was smothered in a sticky sauce that was over the top in gooey sweetness. Far to sweet for my sweet pallete. Service I wont dwell on, only to say it needs improving. Customers do not need to be pushed into ordering, and a more friendly service from some of them would not go amiss. Despite its expensive re fit we dined in a room with bare floorboards. Easy to mop up I suppose if the tapas gets dropped! But not very "cosy". Having said all that, we will return, because they are new, and deserve a second chance. Then certain things hopefully will improve with time. We went at 7pm during the week and it was quiet which didn't help the ambience. I see the first review on this site praises the place, so it cant all be bad. Though being a "trencherman" myself, a few tapas for Sunday lunch is not going to fill me. But Hey ho, each to their own.

They have a fantastic chef- he's won tons of awards - and the food was superb. We shared the tapas - mussels in a garlic, basil and white wine sauce; spicy meatballs dripping with melted cheese; king prawns with garlic in a delicate Asian curry sauce and a Cheshire Cheese fritter with red onion marmalade - much better than any tapas I have ever had. Friendly, professional staff made the lunchtime a memorable treat. Can't wait to go back - they tell me they are starting Mad Hatter tea parties - a fun way to enjoy afternoon tea :)
