A nice traditional pub, with great character. The beer is properly stored and fresh tasting. the food was excellent, I had the goujons of fish and scampi with chips & mushy peas; portion size was just right and the chips were a nice golden brown, crunchy outside and fluffy inside, the fish was also superbly cooked. I followed it up with an apple and blackberry crumble with custard and vanilla ice cream - Marvellous!! This is a nice quiet pub (No music) and I would recommend the beer and the food, plus the ambience will make for pleasant conversation. The new owners are friendly and helpful.

We have visited lots of times for after work drinks over the years but this visit 100% is deserving of a review. Although busy, as we walked through the door we were greeted across the bar by a gentleman we later found out to be called Dan. This was so much more welcoming than our past visits. The pub was busier than we have found it before, but Dan assured us he would find us some seats. He recommended the pure brew organic larger and can I say what a recommendation, weve always gone for double 4 in the past but he explained why this was no longer available. What made me write this review is the high level of service Dan was giving to every guest that came through the door, showing a genuine interest in each of them. We usually only pop in for one quick drink, we stayed for 3. We hope to see Dan this week when we go back.

Excellent experience in a place that really felt like a proper pub! The atmosphere was excellent, and lucky to go when it wasn't too crowed. A shame that certain drinks were not available as the "gun" was not functioning - maybe bottles could be kept in reserve as back-up? My substitute drink made me rather maudlin and emotional, but I guess that is all part of life's rich pattern...

Had an absolutely fantastic hour here on a Tuesday afternoon, due to the rail strikes stopping me from getting where I needed to be. Debs was the perfect host, and the Sam Smith's group should consider themselves lucky to have such a welcoming human managing the place. Beer good (it's from Yorkshire for God's sake) and general ambience perfect. I shall return 👍

After an enjoyable 'up-market' lunch nearby, it was too early to head home - hence the visit. As four refugee Northerners, it was a pleasant surprise to find that 'Sam Smiths' was available on draught - so with a friendly barmaid to look after us, we enjoyed a couple of very enjoyable pints of bitter before heading home. We just felt sorry that there were so few other customers - presumably the effects of Covid were still being felt by the hospitality sector.

Called in for a drink and a break, half way on our walk from arriving at Euston station, on route to the Hard Rock hotel. At 8-30 on a Saturday evening, the place was empty, but this may have been due to Covid, but it is a very nice and typical London Pub. Good selection of drinks, only comment is the signage for the toilets, the sign for the ladies points to the left but is over the door to the Gents, an embarrassing happening occurred to my daughter, the poor girl had never seen a urinal before, she was embarrassed, we laughed our heads off.

Visited this pub a few times The manager is just a jobsworth Previously this bloke in his overblown sick inducing shirts he wears was like a little bully if you used your mobile phone in front of him. He enjoyed shouting that the rules state you cannot use hand devices. While letting the BBC toffs that drink in there swear get abusive and take over the entrance door area so you can't get in or out..so I stopped drinking in there also when Sam Smith hiked the prices up during the covid. While the manager and the staff had a nice long 3 month break at our expense.

I came to the Horse and Groom for a quiet drink on a Wednesday evening in September. Overall the staff were friendly, the interior was nice and drinks were reasonably priced. Unfortunately due to low numbers of customers (and potentially Covid protocols) large areas of the pub were closed off and the pub was closing early. Also, please note this is Sam Smiths pub and thus only sells the beer from that brewery.

Absolutely disgusted!!! I cannot believe what I witnessed last night. I went into this pub for a quiet drink and have never met a more obnoxious rude, vile landlord in my entire life who after making me feel uncomfortable for merely ordering a drink. He then went on to verbally abuse a young lady in front of the whole pub for no apparent reason. All I can say is he is very lucky there were no real men in the pub to witness this verbal attack. Incredible. If this pub is brewery owned then they to sort this immediately. This type of behaviour is NOT OK.

I can honestly say that I have never had a worst pub experience in London. Ever. I had been many times to the Horse & Groom (this was actually the first pub I went when I visited London for the first time many years ago and when it looked completely different) for a quick pint and a cup of chocolate for my son who goes to school around the corner. The service was always cordial and although the beer is very bad, as I reckon you should expect for a pint of Sam Smith, it was reasonably priced. Then, one fateful day, I made the mistake of staying for dinner. And then I met the publican. It is an understatement of sorts to say that there is something seriously wrong with this chap. I thought it was mildly amusing when, clad in a flower stamped shirt, was loudly parading around the pub showing the cheap and tired décor to some friends as if he were giving a private tour of the National Gallery. Alas, the mirth was swiftly taken away from me. He first came to complain, rudely enough, that my son’s backpack was taking too much space. I apologized and moved it away and he went back behind the bar. I went up there to apologize again and to order some food but this didn’t improve his sour demeanour and he made another rude comment. I know that trying to appease a bully in general leads nowhere, but I thought that this may satisfy his pseudo-alpha personality. That was a mistake, obviously. It was also a mistake not to point out that he was cheating me with the bill, once the food and more beer were ordered, but I was deadbent on enjoying my meal with my two sons and I tried to put the whole incident behind, including the overcharge. The food came; it was, I guess not surprisingly, of very poor quality. Overcooked hamburgers, dry buns, soggy fries, the works. Then the second mistake of the evening was made: my older son, who is 8 years old, got thirsty. I know how people can get testy around kids in pubs, so I have always trained him to be very respectful to avoid annoying someone. Because he is very shy, he never had any problems in the hundredths of pubs that he has been over the years. On the contrary, customers and employees are constantly commending him for how well behaved he is. So, I thought it was safe to tell him to ask for a glass of water himself since I was eating and feeding my other son. A few seconds later, the publican came, screaming at the top of his lungs and foaming through his mouth about children in leash and licenses (yes, that portmanteau of an excuse) and whatnot. Although, the pub was quite noisy by then, everybody about us stopped talking and turned around to look at this drill sergeant of a pub owner reading me the riot act for allowing a child to order a glass of water. I calmly tried to explained how disproportionate this was, how my son goes to pubs at least once a week and he never had any problem ordering a glass of water, and that there was no way I could get this glass of water myself without either leaving the kids alone or bringing them to the bar anyway. But there was no way that he could be calmed down. My 3 years old is a tough cookie, but he was getting quite scared so I though that it would change the manager’s mind from that unfortunate glass of water, if I mentioned that my intention was not to create any trouble and that I hadn’t even pointed out that he had overcharged me with the bill. He got even angrier! So much so, that the lady that normally served us the quick pint and the cup of chocolate had to intervene to tell him that we had always been polite customers and that she will look into the bill situation. They both left, but since, in order to do that, she had to audit the cash register, and the whole thing was taking her almost 10 minutes, I got up again and went to the bar to say never mind, it is just a few pounds, I am sorry for the water incident and that it wasn’t worth getting so angry about it. But there was no way of calming him down and he went back to screaming that he was going to get to the bottom of the bill thing because he couldn’t have made a mistake and that “you people” (I guess he meant foreigners, but who knows) don’t understand anything about laws (the irony of him telling me this when someone was auditing his cash register because he had overcharged a client went over his head) and incoherent things of that sort. I went back to my seat to meekly wait for the verdict on the bill that was finally brought by the lady who, unsurprisingly, informed me that they had overcharged me by about 5 pounds and that since they couldn’t return the money for whatever silly reason, they were going to pay me in pints! The publican never came to apologize himself for the mistake. The whole thing was so surreal, that it would have been more amusing if he hadn’t scared my sons so much with his temper tantrums. So, unless you are a psychiatric specializing in anger management, I would strongly advise you to have your pints and dinner somewhere else, especially given the poor quality of both these things at the Horse & Groom. There are much better pubs in the neighborhood (The Green Man, with much better beer; The Yorkshire Grey, also cheap but with better food; The Crown & Scepter; and hopefully re-opening soon, the King’s Arms, among others) that not only have either better beer, food or both. But more importantly are not managed by an out of control chap that will scream at you and your children for a glass of water.

What is so refreshing about Sam Smith’s pubs is their steadfast determination to maintain their pubs as traditional as possible. No frills, just great beer and conversation. The Horse and Groom in Great Portland Street embodies all of this and it was a real pleasure to come across it prior to a concert at the 229 Venue. If you like great, traditional bitter you will find it here, straight from oak casks at a reasonable price. If your preference is fruit beer, wheat beer, stout, it’s all here but not the usual, all beers are Sam Smith’s only, including spirits and wine!! Check it out, you won’t be disappointed unless you like loud thumping background music or the usual predictable offering in most pubs. Great, friendly, efficient service too.

The staff initially friendly took our order, I ordered a vegetarian option, stating that and the name of the dish on the menu. The dishes finally arrived, I took a bite of the supposed cheese and onion pie and to my horror...it was STEAK! Not meaning to be one of those veggies, I politely asked for a replacement, the waitress seemed more angry than apologetic. I then waited while my friend's food became as chilly as the room, for them to reheat another frozen pie. I was offered no comp, apology or friendly sympathy for my inconvenience. Furthermore adding insult to injury I was also charged a suspect price that did not correlate the pricing of the menu. Avoid at all 'costs' not worth the time or money.

This pub was situated close to our hotel and we passed it each day. We stopped one night to look at the menu as there was a sign outside implying that they served very good food. The menu looked ok, basic pub grub, but there is nothing wrong with that if it's done well and we liked the sound of their "famous" pies! We decided to eat here on another evening and were really looking forwards to it. The bar has a lovely old fashioned, Victorian London pub, feel to it with lots of ornate mirror and glass etc, and there was a cosy room beyond that, with an open fire and comfortable chairs. The pub certainly has lots of atmosphere! Meals are served upstairs. We ordered Panko Coated Squid Rings to share as a starter, which I have to say, were extremely good! We thought it bode well for the rest of the meal, but little did we know that we had had the best part! For our mains, I had ordered a Steak and Old Brewery Bitter Pie and my partner had ordered a Chicken and Wiltshire Ham one, both with chips rather than mash. Once we had finished our squid rings, the barman asked if we were ready for our main courses and I said yes. He then said that he would tell the chef and bring them straight over. I thought it was a little odd, as he made it sound like they had already been plated up and were sat waiting for us to finish the first course. With hindsight, we think that this was exactly the case! Shorty afterwards I heard the barman ask a couple who just came in (it was about 8.20pm by now) if they were wanting food. When they said yes he said that he had told the chef that he could go home but it was ok because he would let him know. Last orders for food was at 9 O'clock, so why had the chef been told he could go home at 8.20!!!! The main courses arrived and first impressions were not good! The pies were pretty small, and the chips, which had been served in a mini deep fat fryer basket, looked ok but nothing special, and as for the buttered carrots and cabbage that accompany the meal, they were served in a white oval dish which was way too big for the paltry amount you actually got! You had a tiny amount of cabbage and two or three batons of carrot, neither of which had actually been introduced to any butter! There was also a small jug of gravy on each plate. It was was when we started eating the meals that things really went downhill! The pies did not seem to be very fresh and were fairly dried up inside, there was no gravy (or sauce in my partners case) in them. And chips, vegetables and gravy were all cold! We couldn't understand why my partner had been given gravy to go on a chicken and mushroom pie either, but that was a minor detail. We called the barman (who was a fairly young lad) over to complain about the meals and he said that he was sorry to hear that we weren't enjoying them. But it was obvious that he was at a totally loss as to what to do about it! He didn't suggest we ordered an alternative instead, or say anything much about the situation at all! My partner and I briefly considered leaving the food and taking ourselves off somewhere else to eat, but we were both tired and hungry after a day of lots of walking and sightseeing and really didn't feel like it, so we just got on with it and finished the meals up. (A fact that we both regretted as soon as we had left the establishment, we should have absolutely refused to eat it or pay for it!) The barman did come back over once we were done and offered us a complimentary tea or coffee as we hadn't enjoyed our main courses. My partner said he would have a decaf coffee if they had one and the barman said he would find out. However, he did not come back with an answer so we decided to settle up and leave. We were offered no reduction whatsoever on our bill and we chose not to make a fuss about it because the bartender was only young and clearly didn't have much of a clue. In conclusion, although we thoroughly enjoyed the starter which was very nice, we have kicked ourselves several times since for being daft enough to finish those awful pies! Perhaps that is what they are famous for! We will never go back!

The first thing to strike you is the absence of background ' music' and it was wonderful just to hear the murmur of other diners talking and to be able to carry out a conversation over the meal. Some may find the room a little gloomy but we loved it and sat by the window to people watch as we ordered. The menu has a good choice without being overwhelming and was very reasonably priced on average under £10 for a main meal. We both chose pies and were slightly disappointed that a microwave had been used to reheat some of the food but generally the food was tasty. The young waitress was lovely and seemed to be multitasking very effectively. We will certainly return in the future.

After failing to find a great traditional pub most of the week I stumbled across this gem. The food was fantastic testimonial pub food and the service was warm and welcoming. Very close to Regent park and Oxford Circus.

Dispone di una sala ristorante al piano di sopra, cameriere molto gentile, cibo davvero ottimo, molto intimo e tranquillo. Consigliato se si é in zona ma attenzione la cucina chiude alle 9

Having been on a visit to the BBC we were looking for somewhere to have lunch. We came across the Horse and Groom purely by accident and what a great find. A smart, clean establishment, but traditional in its decor, it has a good pub grub menu and prices were very reasonable especially for central London. The eating area was up several flights of stairs, not sure if there was a lift or not, and was quite small, but on a Monday lunchtime this was no problem. We were served by a very pleasant young lady. we had the fish and chips, scampi and chips and macaroni cheese which were delicious, all very nicely presented and plenty of it. We couldn't fault our visit in any way and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful traditional lunch

Lovely spot for a drink after work. Decent prices and plenty of atmosphere, without being flashy. Strong recommendation for a friendly pint.

We were on a quest for sticky toffee pudding, saw the pub, and stopped in. The lady at the bar promised this was the best sticky toffee pudding. I love the stuff but was a bit skeptical. She wasn't kidding. The pudding was huge--enough for two, maybe three people--but I ate the entire thing! I need to walk the entire city now, but it was completely worth it. If you're looking for good sticky toffee pudding (which, even better, is fairly cheap), you've got to stop here.

Ben, Nicky and the staff have turned this friendly traditional pub into a haven for real ale with the added benefit that on Tuesdays they provide free sausage mash & onion gravy (if you buy a drink over a certain price) and on Saturdays it's Gillian's home made Chilli ..Good pub, nice people, great beer!

This traditional English Pub has smallish upstairs Dinning Room where good value food is served between 6-9pm. Ask to see the menu in the bar downstairs. We enjoyed a shared starter of Olives with Feta Cheese and Bread. A main course of Lasagne with Salad Garnish and A Mushroom Quiche with Mediterranean Vegetables. Shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding and finished with a cup each of Americano Coffee with hot milk. All were enjoyable. The total Bill was just over £27. We had already purchased a glass of wine each in the bar downstairs. Nice wine. Fair price. The Staff were all friendly and helpful. It was very quiet the evening we were there so no idea how larger numbers would be coped with. The furnishings and the room are on the dark side but the chairs are comfortable.I visited on this occasion with my daughter but would seek it out again if visiting London with my husband. Am sure that he would enjoy the beer.NB for those who may be interested. This pub was the venue for the first appearance of the Manic Street Preachers in London.

Went to tea at the Ritz and was not impressed. The scones were not good and not really scones. Ch and F&M offer better tea experience. Table setting and chairs were very cramped. Service was just ok.

Pret is always my go-to for semi-healthy and fresh lunch on the go when I am in the city. Their coffee is good, and I love their hot meatball wrap.
