We had the best evening, Marketa is a fantastic manager and gave us the the friendliest service, nothing was too much trouble.

Came yesterday for a Sunday Roast. Poor quality food. The meat was like it was from a foil tray type of roast. Not proper Turkey breast meat. Frozen roast potatoes. Veg were disgusting and had a twang to them. Probably frozen . Cabbage was yuk. Parsnips hard and tasteless. The best thing was the yorkshire pudding. I wont be returning again. We gave it another try after saying we wouldn't return earlier this year. I had been coming to this pub for years but over the last year has gone right downhill. Don't waste your money. What a shame

Come here Thursday for lunch with my family, I had the cod and chips, was nice to have it on a hot plate my family all enjoyed their meals, our waitress was Alison she was very helpful and kind. Thankyou for making our visit and look forward to coming back.

We went to celebrate a 30th birthday on Sunday night and Tuesday morning six out of ten of us had been vomiting all night. Everyone had different dishes who were ill including the vegetarian meals.

The food was very tasty and good value in the lunch menu. Service was excellent. Very friendly manager... James. I liked the decor inside. Also pllenty of tables outside with a lovely view. Sadly too windy outside today. Toilets were spotless with high-quality soap and hand lotion. Altogether a most enjoyable experience. Thanks. We'll be back!

Went for lunch with my elderly mum,we both had rump steak in a cciabatta bun with chips and salad off of the "just lunch" menu. We'll,it was fantastic...the Steaks were cooked to perfection and the whole meal really was great. The atmosphere was really relaxing and the staff were very friendly. I regularly go to the Horse and Groom, and yesterday didn’t disappoint the team were friendly and the food was lovely! I felt very relaxed with everything going on and the team understood all the COVID measures that were in place, the waitresses had visors on and didn’t get too close however they haven’t lost the pub feel.

Brilliant service and felt completely safe dining out here. Special shout out to Amelia and Hannah our servers of the night. Very helpful and attentive.

We had a table in the garden which was lovely,it was warm and sunny great atmosphere.The pub has a one way system and loads of new extra tables in the garden making social distancing easy.Staff great and friendly a bar out side aswell.You can have just drinks but as we found last night the food is top notch we will be back.

Me and a couple of friends came here for a late birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised.This was the first dinner we had out after the easing of lockdown from coronavirus and social distancing had been taken very seriously by customers and staff. The pub has a fantastic garden area with a great atmosphere and an outdoor bar to order drinks!We felt very safe the entire time and had a wonderful evening filled with great food at a great price!!! We came for my birthday. Me, my husband and my daughter. We've been here before to celebrate special occasion and as always it was lovely. It is by far my favourite restaurant. It's beautiful inside,lovely stuff, delicious food, lovely atmosphere, good portions and not over priced.

Visited the horse and groom on Tuesday for lunch with my two sisters and I must say I felt very safe with the way they worked . The pub was very clean and run well .The food was fabulous and service was great will defiantly be returning

Went to the Horse and Groom on Monday for a light lunch, we felt so safe and looked after by the staff. The layout of the pub is easy to follow and there’s lot of social distancing measures in place! The food was amazing as was before lockdown so will definitely be back soon.

We had a great early evening meal on Wednesday - which was a mixed grill and a sirloin steak. Each element of both meals were really lovely. Service was initially very good but tailed off towards the end as the place filled up.

We regularly come here and have spent many an evening here, sometimes with friends, sometimes with family and sometimes with our granddaughter.

Another visit with friends to this local pub for lunch.We have been here before but only for dinner on our way home from work.Slightly different menu, but the same friendly service, happy staff and welcoming atmosphere. Also busier than we thought it might be for lunch; obviously an indication of it's popularity.Whitebait starter and fish and chips was very good, both being generous portions, the sea bass was another choice, again, very good.Beer as usual very good.A good local Pub, recommended.

... I ate here the day after visiting the Michelin star Flitch of Bacon, so naturally a bit of a come down. However, it is what it is, good quality pub grub in a nice atmosphere with good service and very reasonably priced - great for families and larger groups. Have been before, will go again.

I have eaten here many of times and always given it a good review , but it’s not the same any more and we were disappointed, the portion sizes have been reduced dramatically, and the food definitely wasn’t as good . My daughter in law had the roast diner just three small roast potatoes and they looked like they had been there all day the veg wasn’t hot and the dinner itself was disappointing I had the rump steak there was hardly no chips which again. Wasn’t hot , the mushrooms what there was of them were dry burnt and black . My sons burger was ok but again very small cold chips . Husband mixed grill has shrunk in size and not good at all . It’s such a shame as I have over the years gave good reviews and recommend it to many friends . But things do change but not for the best in this case .

Arrived at the pub which was quite busy for the time of the year,shown to our table, about twenty minutes waite which is about average here, our mains arrived,mine ,Hunter Chicken, which was very nice, my wife Gammon Steak and Pinaple was rated excellent by her. Staff are all ways pleasant here,, and today was no exception, the meal was very good value more so because we had a 30% discount voucher to spend.

Four of us arrived just after midday for a light Sunday lunch. Three of us asked for the cheese toastie and one went for jacket potato and beans. Not complicated. The toastie was to come with onion marmalade and the cheese element was a rarebit. The result was really poor. The onion was whole slices of cooked red onion, and a lot of them. Nothing ‘marmalade’ there. And the cheese was both tasteless and almost non existent. So the potato; under cooked, small and the beans in a small pot hadn’t been reheated.

Service is very slow, possibly too many chiefs and not enough indians. Ordered a rump steak off their Thuesday menu - Good value and a hearty portion for £8.50. However, It took so long to arrive. I heard the Chef call service 4 times and guess what, it was our meal. Triple cooked chips looked aenemic, maybe they had nissed their second or third cooking.

We went there on boxing day I had venison which was very good. The staff are friendly and the food is always good. They have a good selection of food on the menu and a good selection of drinks.

Atmosphere very good unfortunately food overcooked and dried up. Service not very good - simply left in a corner for ages while waiting for bill and never asked whether we had enjoyed the food and it was OK.

Visited on a Monday, the restaurant used to be really busy every night of the week, but it was really quiet. The restaurant was cold and I nearly put my coat on during the evening. We ordered Gin and Tonics and were not asked what ones we wanted The chicken and mushroom pie lacked content and was only just warm enough, the ice cream sundae did not have all the ingredients as they had run out. Staff indifferent, I think they wanted to go home and were only interested in us paying the bill at around 9.30pm. We had a 33% off food voucher, but it was really not worth the effort, would have been better to go elsewhere and pay full price. Won't rush back any time soon

Lovely cosy traditional old pub, really busy for sunday lunch, always a good sign. Lamb shoulder was lovely and red cabbage was yummy!

We were made to stand and wait for a long time until our table was ready, even though there were other tables available. Of the six meals we ordered, four were good but the other two (roast beef) were inedible, The beef was a centimetre think, over-cooked and too tough to be cut with the cutlery we were given. In both cases the beef remained uneaten.

Very popular, sensible prices, very busy at weekends. plenty of parking on site. On a main road between Chelmsford north and WRITTLE.

Had the 33% discount offer and decided to come for a late lunch.Food was good, scallops and chorizo, lasagne and slow cooked beef rib.All tasty and well presented, and very good value with the discount.

Have eaten here on several occasions now and the food is always tasty and well presented. However, there is room for improvement: namely, the time it takes to be served after ordering. On three visits it's taken about an hour for food to arrive. The serving staff are very good and always working flat out (though they could maybe do with an extra pair of hands at peak times) so I'm assuming the problem lies with the kitchen being understaffed. It would help if customers were told at the point of ordering if there was likely to be a delay. An ideal place for a leisurely meal with friends but I would think twice if I needed to get back to the office.

Visited here mid-December just before Christmas. Service was good throughout evening. Food was very tasty as well, only problem is with the starters depending on what you have they can be extremely small portions, for example the scallops and chicken goujons extremely overpriced for what you get! My dad complained about the steak stating that it was very distasteful and had a similar flavour to detergent, I tried the steak and I must agree that it did. We informed the waitress and had a free desert due to it, which was a kind gesture. Very warm atmosphere inside restaurant.

We went for a late afternoon dinner between Christmas and New Year - the restaurant was not too busy. The mixed grill was lovely - although steak a little too gamey for me! Excellent service.

We have used the horse and groom many times, it is local to us and the food is well cooked and a very reasonably priced.

Unfortunately the horse and groom is not what it was, came for a xmas works meal, we should have realized our mistake by the surly attitude we received when booking. this attitude continued when we arrived and staff even started arguing with each other. Our starters took 30 minutes to arrive then the main course took over an hour, one of our party had to leave it took so long. There seemed to be no consistency in portion size and the food was cold and either over cooked or under cooked. A real shame as this was a good pub as recently as the summer. Will be heading into Chelmsford in future.

Shame fish chips meal was great but went back again for the roast dinner and it was terrible the meat was raw chewy and dry, roast potatoes fried tasteless just oily supposed to be goose fat and the veg was raw. Certainly wouldn't recommend the roast dinner at all only thing edible was the Yorkshire and the stuffing was cold. Shame as fish chip meal had before was superb. Value for money very bad as very expensive.

We went to this pub only because our usual pub was fully booked due to the festive season, and we couldn't get a table. As I had had a bad experience previously I was very wary but decided to eat here as my friend and I had nowhere else to go. We were shown to our table where we noticed the wine glasses were filthy - water marks, finger print on mine and what looked like the remnants of red wine in the bottom. When we asked the waitress for a clean glass she laughed and said the sun was showing up the marks. Actually they needed a really good wash by hand!!!

Our family went for our traditional pre Christmas get together. The food was very good with good sized portions of everything. Drinks were reasonable.Only down side was the promised meal voucher was not given as our booking did not appear on the gift voucher list. That was despite going in to the restaurant earlier and pointing out that the voucher had not been give, Apparently we were not the only people in this position. The Manager didn't seem to care. Chef and Brewer need to sort out their offers and make sure if you qualify (as we did) the vouchers are given out.Apart from that I would recommend the Horse and Groom.

The menu is fairly typical of pub food. It was quite tasty but nothing exceptional. Service was a little slow to begin with but gathered pace as the evening wore on. As a tip, the scollope starter is miniscule!
