Hong Kong Chef in Colchester

I am very appalled with the service I received last weekend. After receiving The wrong food I phoned to let them know, to my surprise the lady was extremely unhelpful just saying that is what I had ordered, I would not have order this dish as I am vegetarian, it was full of meat and seafood which was wasted. I will not be using Hong Kong chef in the future as they obviously don’t care if their customers are happy.

This place is fantastic! Food arrived quickly, piping hot and is absolutely amazing! The salt and pepper chips are perfect and the beef with spring onions and ginger too! And such a lovely delivery lady! Hands down one of the best Chinese takeaways I have had!

This is by far the best Chinese in Colchester, food is always hot when delivered, fresh and tastes so good! Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

Food was adequate. What really annoyed me was no free prawn crackers on a £25 order. Then buying some was £3.50. Absolute rip off. Go to Phoenix down the road, it's MUCH better.

Standards have dropped, sweet & Sour was gloopy, prawn toast over cooked, chicken with water chestnuts bland.

After ordering week on week for a while the customer service I received today was awful. As such regulars we were dismissed, cold food, very late, hungry children and a rude apology. Needless to say we won’t be coming again and will be spreading the word

This is the worst Chinese food we have ever had the misfortune to eat. The ribs were dry and overcooked. The vegetables were also overcooked. The beef dish was inedible. Definitely would not recommend.

Long walk to you, said you were open till 23.30, got there at 23.10, you have been shut for ages, update you're opening times, wasted journey and walk 😒

Order my meal, chicken curry, chips amongst other items..specifically asked for chips cooked well.. received uncooked and the chicken curry was awful..peas In a group in the bottom of tray.. meat stuck together and looks like the sauce was just pored on top.. considering a busy takeaway.. the food was rushed and not nice. Do Reccomend avoiding busy periods..

Got BBQ spare ribs and the sauce was a disgusting type of grave. It was horrible and a waste of money. I wouldn't recommend it. I would give No Star's if I could

Absolutely love this Chinese takeaway restaurant, there curries are the best in Colchester by a mile. I have a Chinese takeaway near me but choose this one. Food is always fresh and tasty and hot. 10/10 on all dishes. You must try it.

We could not locate a menu online. When we called, the person who answered was rude and we felt we were rushed . He was asking if we had the menu with us and when we explained we hadn't and just wanted to know prices, he wasn't very helpful. We didn't go ahead with them .Won't be buying any food from them!

Having tried various local chinese takeaways in the past we have now been coming to Hong Kong Chef for years. It is the best around. Competitively priced. food always fresh, piping hot and delicious. We will not go anywhere else. Normally ask for food to be delivered. It always arrives on time and drivers are always friendly and helpful.

Banquet Chinese is objectively better, but if you're looking for a nice Chinese on a budget you can't go wrong with Hong Kong Chef.

Do not order from here!! I found a long black hair literally cooked into my satay chicken 🤢 the quality was poor as well, stringy chicken and basically empty veg spring rolls! Much prefer bamboo garden on just eat

My prawn balls were grey/black inside,chow mien soggy,prawn toast is added really fishy. I through it all in the bin I was told I could have credit then I was told that was just for the prawn balls!!! A waste of £20 il never order here again

Order our food tonight as most weeks close to £100 to discover 2 items missing when phoned to say the lady basically accused me of making it up and that she would this time send food out, 20 minutes later my food arrived to which I sent it away. Bad service and rude customer service

Last Tuesday I ordered some food including some battered prawn balls. Although there was no one else waiting inside they still cooked the food within 5 minutes at the most, which seemed a bit odd considering it was quite a large order, anyway the next day the two people who ate the prawns became quite ill, overnight physically shaking for two nights, third night vomiting and no appetite, although I'm not a doctor and can't say it was food poisoning, I can't see what else it could have been, I'm guessing the food wasn't cooked fresh and was just heated up as I said they prepared and cooked it all in under 5 minuite wait. This isn't good.

Went in there tonight they were not keeping to the rule of 6 there were up to 15 people in there at one time an elderly gentleman got him self out of their because there were to many people in there it took me and another women to form a cue for it to return to covid regulation rules disgusted when I told someone in the shop they didn't seem to care at all that they were breaking covid rules , I was disgusted.

Best chinese we’ve had for a long time! Ordered Chinese from HKC after craving it during lock down. It was really tasty and really hot when we got it home. V impressed with their Covid hygiene. Masks and gloves worn, screen up, contactless payment, so v good.

Recently re-opened after closing due to COVID-19, Hong Chef have returned and are making sure everyone is getting their Chinese safely. Tastes pretty amazing too.

We have ordered from this Chinese about five times now and each time the food has been absolutely outstanding. We order and pay via telephone and food arrives within the hour. We have even had friends over and ordered a large amount of food from here and they couldn’t believe how fabulous it tasted. This is our go to Chinese. It’s a must try!

Best Chinese in Colchester. Little Pricey but very good food and quick service

Where to start with this lot? Prawn toast was overcooked and so was the sweet and sour chicken. They forgot the sauce too which in turn made the dish inedible. Beef chow mein was shocking. Noodles were ok I guess but the Beef was tasteless like it hadn’t been seasoned at all. Also had a strange unusually soft texture. My Dogs enjoyed it! They’re not that fussy to be fair. Capital ribs were dry and overcooked, the sauce reminded me of a cheap ketchup. Awful. Crispy aromatic duck wasn’t either of those things. ‘Soggy and tasteless’ would be a better description of that dish. King Prawn curry was terrible also. Curry sauce lacked any real flavour and again no seasoning. The thing I can not understand is why this place was so busy?? It’s some of the worst Chinese food I have ever sampled. Paid nearly £50 and most of it ended up in the bin and in the the dog bowls. Needless to say I will not be returning. Save your money and go to China Chef or across town to Beijing even. This place is a disgrace

The food here is 90% great but occassionally they let themselves down. I regularly order sweet and sour chicken balls (best for miles) but last week they must have had a temporary chef and the batter tasted like fish and chip batter... Weird. Also worth checking your order is correct, out of about 50 orders there over the years about 5 were incorrect in some way (missing items or incorrect items)... And although apologetic there nothing they can do from 15 miles away! Despite the minor niggles, I travel past at least four others from which I will not eat to get here. Staff are fairly consistent and most speak well (I have absolutely no ear for accents despite my father being Geordie).

Recently moved to Stanway, tried a few of the recommended ones and can honestly say this is the best. We ordered a delivery and it came in super quick time and knew where we lived, considering that it is a new build. Staff were really friendly and spiced up the curry for us. Food was clearly fresh and not greasy. Would definately recommend it and will be using this Chinese in future

Always have received wonderful Chinese food from here. Always hot, quick service and a.ple parking around the rear of the takeaway. Been going here for years and will continue to do so. Highly recommended. It can be busy on a Friday and Saturday evening but that is expected. They do also deliver.

Honest David's reviews 4.2.19 Popped in with work to get a takeaway. The lady who served us was excellent, I had a person with LD with me and she let him take his time to order his food,and then change it a couple of times. Prices are the normal Mount for chineses in Colchester but I was surprised with the amount we got... Loads . And loads, so very impressed there But the chips were a let down. Shame really..but I do like my chips. Good 4****

BAD SERVICE: I made my order and picked up. When I arrived home I saw this huge lump of something I don't know. When I called to make a complaint, they told me I ordered the "pancake" I don't even eat pancakes. I asked for "spring ROLLS" Then they tell me the spring rolls is the pancake. The man started shouting, told him not to shout at me, he turns around and says I'm also shouting at him. Then he hung up on me and this wasn't the first time they gave me a wrong order! Rubbish service, I'll never order from them again. Sad cause I love their food, but the customer service is nasty and not worth it.

If we decide to have a takeaway this is where we go. Food is always good and hot,have never had a problem and would recommend to anyone.

Have been buying take away from here since moving into the area in 2013 and was recommended by a friend. We haven’t been disappointed, everything we have ordered so far has always been good, tasty and reasonably priced. Chefs special curry is always good, this is our favourite. Would recommend.

I have purchased take aways from this restaurant since moving to Stanway in 2005. The standard of the food has slowly deteriorated over the last few months. I bought a Special Curry which contained onion chicken and pork nothing else no King Prawn or Beef?? Which on the grand scale of things is quite a minor complaint. However my daughter's husband ordered the House Special Rice. The meat in it was still bloodied inside and some pieces were frozen in the middle!!! When I called to complain the chap who served me said that they didn't cook the food properly because they were busy!! After I picked myself up off the floor in a state of disbelief I then explained the serious implications of serving people half cooked beef, pork and chicken??? The guy asked me to keep the uncooked pieces to one side and he would call us back. We never received that call. Be extremely careful when you order a takeaway here as you could end off in Hospital.

The food was dreadful. I had a Special Curry that was anything but special my daughter's husband had a house special rice and the beef in it was still red and still frozen in the middle. There excuse was that they were busy??? Do they not realise serving food in that way can cause SERIOUS harm!!! There reaction to my complaint was unbelievable.

We had a lovely lunchtime special. The price is as good, the food was delightful. Quality and not quantity. Staff were very friendly.

Used to go to the China One on London Road but since trying out Hong Kong Chef, this is now our take away of choice. Good selection of food and the dishes are always crammed to the lid and very tasty! As we don't do take away that often, this is quite handy for us and a good fall back for quick and convenient grub. Always busy and still manages to be very quick.
