A family favourite because they are so flavourful & attentive to us being vegan & a wheat allergy. Couldn’t recommend enough!

1st time here, it was ok...wasn't brilliant... Expensive.. the squid was really good, rice not...rest was just ok...had better had worse

More like best Chinese in the UK!! Seriously another level of quality and attention to flavour and ingredients. Everything is perfectly balanced and cooked to perfection. This is not your average Chinese takeaway and I always look forward to it when i come and visit family on Mersea.

I really enjoyed my scallop & King Prawn in Black bean sauce with egg fried rice!:) The chef even added a few sliced chillies as he understood I like spicy food.

Food ordered with a smile and I was advised it would be about 15 minutes - about what I would expect. However, the chilli prawns had too much chilli powder on them, rendering them impossible to eat. The chow mein was lovely, as were the sweet and sour chicken and the rice dishes. The crispy chilli beef was also coated in chilli powder/flakes which, whilst not as bad as the prawns, they were not as tasty as other Chinese's we have had.

Expensive for what you get, chips undercooked, crispy beef tasted more like fish. No prawn crackers, our ussual chinese (china house) was closed so tried this one as it was close to us. Wont be using again our regular chinese costs half the price and twice the quality.

Disappointed pancake roll ( small as in supermarket type) sweet and sour mainly batter served in the sauce and very chewy. Special chow mien plenty of meat but dry. Egg fried rice sticky with no egg Won’t be returning very poor overpriced!!!!!!!

When you walk in and see how clean this take away is and how polite the staff are you know the food is going to be good and it was. Hot and tasty 10/10. Will visit again when back in Mersea.

Haven't had a meal from China Kitchen in a while so we thought we would give it a try. It seems very popular as always busy but we found some of the food greasy and lacking of flavour. Maybe it was just an off night.

Alright but way overpriced Curry sickly wiv no mushrooms just onion and peas which made it taste sweet

I have never witnessed such a shambles in a takeaway. We are visiting the island and this hot great reviews. Our order was placed and we were told 40 minute wait. It seemed quite quiet when we ordered. Then within 30 mins the takeaway was literally full of people, wrong orders were being given out the staff taking orders and payment looked so stressed with it all. People were having to chase their order to actually get it. So people were collecting and saying they ordered it 2 hours before and were still waiting gif their order. After 40 mins I had to ask where our order was and the lady said they were waiting on the chow mein, however all our other food was ready in a bag, after another 15 mins our food was ready. When we got home some of the food not in foils was cold. We won’t be going back here again

High quality food. However when making a telephone order always expect a delay on collection. I usually add at least 15m - 20m, as your order is never ever ready at the time they estimate. Dont let this put you off always a very nice meal 👌

Food is always cooked to order, fresh as a daisy. Great staff who know your preferred order. Employ local youngsters.

Clean open kitchen, food was good although as we were on hols we could have done with some soy sauce, remember when picking up.

I checked out the reviews before heading over and I must say we weren’t disappointed, what a slick operation everyone knew what they were doing and although busy we didn’t wait long. I must say one of the best Chinese we’ve ever had! Amazing!

Absolutely one of the best Chinese takeaways that I have had (try the salt and chilli prawns and the crispy beef!).

Was visiting from London and decided to get a big takeaway as Chinese is my favourite. I must say this is one of the nicest Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. Chilli beef was hands down the best I’ve ever had, sweet and sour chicken absolutely delicious, the satay chicken was lovely and also really enjoyed the chow mein and spring rolls. I really wish my local Chinese takeaways were this delicious. Thank you so much!

If there was an option to give no stars, I would have given them that rating. They are quick to take your order and money, giving you a really quick time for collection....in my case, 25 minutes. On returning, I was told to wait 5 minutes....no problem, if it was the truth. An hour later, and after further chasing, I was called to collect my order. Eventhough it was late, I was looking forward to eating what I ordered.....which it wasn't! I was given the completely different order, in fact someone else's food. I then contacted the China Garden, who was seemingly expecting my call, and asked if they could supply a replacement oder. Not wanting to tempt fate, I settled for returning their food and getting a refund. I returned within 10 minutes of initial collection and then endured a further wait as the man couldn't find my receipt. Thankfully he eventually did and the refund was done. His only retort when I asked for an explanation was...."what could I have done? It was one of those things!" Quite simply, he could ensured that the order that I made and paid for was correct and delivered within the stated timescale....isn't that the least anyone would expect? Anyway, I got my refund went around the corner to The Lotus kitchen who took my order, got it to me well within their stated 25 minutes, tasted delicious and best of all....was £10.00 cheaper. Don't waste your time with The China Kitchen, go straight to The Lotus Kitchen to avoid my experiences.

Rung through an order and was told to collect in 20min, after driving to the takeaway they made us wait another hour because they didn't start cooking the food until we got there, so in total we waiting 1h 20min. And to top it off they didn't even apologise for the unacceptable delay. The portions are small, the prawn toast is way over priced at £5 and you literally get 1 piece of toast cut into 4 pieces. The ribs were a little too greasy. The rest if the meal was to a good standard but the points above and the customer service warrant the low score.

Enjoyed the food but won't be going back the servings are too small. For the price expected a lot more.

Went here for a takeaway on a girl's holiday. Absolutely the best Chinese I've ever eaten. As a veggie, I always get the Tofu and what they have on offer here is second to none. If I'm even remotely close in the future I will be going back. Food was excellent, staff very friendly and the kitchen (that can be seen from the front desk) was clean and tidy

Food was nice, salt and pepper prawns were so salty I actually couldn't eat them and i love salt. Everything else was very nice.

In my opinion I would say it’s more than worth the money and worth the wait, too. I know there are several comments about both of those points on here but if you’re looking for a cheap, greasy Chinese then go elsewhere. The food here is exceptionally good. Clean, fresh, packed full of flavour. The crispy beef in particular is amazing. I’ve never had a problem ordering from here!

First visit today, staff friendly and helpful considering how busy they were, portions good size, fresh and tasty. Crispy chilly beef, didn't taste any beef, wouldn't order that again. Will return.

This team are working so hard in very difficult circumstances. The food is exceptional. So what if you have to wait occasionally. Why do people moan when things aren't instant? The fact it is so popular tells you everything you need to know. It is worth the wait. I've tried the other Chinese on the island and this is streets ahead.

Food is great but the older chef not wearing a mask when cooking, preparing food, no gloves when touching food. Put me off my food I am afraid.

A clean kitchen and delicious take away food.

We have been so frustrated with this take away for a long time, the food is spectacular but my god they can never have an order ready on time. I waited an additional 25 minutes tonight. Got a refund and went to the other chinese. Just get orders ready on time and this will won so much business. For now, go elsewhere.

Having had a bad waiting time experience in the past we gave this take away another go and were very pleased we did. We were told on the phone it would be an hour and when we went to collect our order it was ready within 5 minutes. The food was fresh and tasty, we definitely will return for another meal.

We waited for over an hour. They kept on taking other people's orders. They had no order numbering system. The food did taste nice though.

I have never experienced such kaos. I placed my order and paid ( no receipts are given out ) I was told it was a 40 mins wait wbich was a long gime to stand out side of the shop. Food not ready. Counter full oc tickets, phone ringing constantly kitchen line full of tickets. After 40 mins I asked for my food but they hadn't started it yet. 65 mins later food ready. I did not enjoy the food because I was too tired of waiting.

Had a take away from here at the weekend. Have used it a lot in the past and have never been disappointed until now. Had a set meal for 2. The price has been increased from £22.50 up to £26. A hike of some 15%. Wasn't impressed with the food on this occasion either with a very bland Chow Mein and what appeared to be chicken dippers described as chicken balls. Not impressed

Not my cup of tea beef curry 5 bits of beef couldn't even chew it lots of onion and peas Kung po chicken ok if you like sweet chilly sauce and water chestnuts. Now the special chow Maine very nice

Over the past couple of years have tried most of the menu and never been disappointed. Whether it be fish, meat or vegetarian all fresh and very tasty. Quick, friendly service, but most importantly great tasting food and good portions.

We used China Kitchen twice during a short break on Mersea Island. The service was good and the food was excellent, and plenty of it. Will visit again when we return.

Food is 5 star, but the wait is horrendous. Be ready in 30 minutes means come in and we will put your ticket in the queue.

Yet again big let down they can never have your order on time and also cannot give you what you order.In my opinion best to take a drive to the Bejing in Colchester you would never be disappointed.

As a large family we decided on the last night of our holiday to have a Chinese takeaway. We most certainly were not disappointed, the food was hot, fresh and incredibly tasty. I don’t think we have ever eaten every single thing leaving nothing but empty containers and plates! Shame they don’t do a long distance delivery!!

We last visited China Kitchen about 6yrs ago on holiday and really enjoyed our takeaway. So when we re-visited Mersea this year we tried them again. Still very enjoyable.Easy to find on the High Street with a "free for 30mins" public car park right beside it.

Saturday Night Takeaway for a campsite meal, looked at reviews and chose China Kitchen, really good food, reasonably priced with good waiting time, shame not deliver to site though. Would certainly go back!

I was on holiday and went their on recommendation. Ordered our food had quite a long wait but they were busy and I could see the amount of orders they had. We got ours went back to the caravan site some miles away but found that we were short of a few items too late to go back, The spare ribs were not good would never go back

High class Chinese takeaway food. The best quality in town.

Great value meal. Cooked really quickly and still hot after 10 minute drive back to caravan. The building is actually on the road down to the car park, map directions not totally accurate.

Visiting mersea for the week and it's really worrying ordering food from somewhere you dont know especially when your local takeaway is quality. I was sceptical after reading bad reviews and food was quite cheap, but went ahead anyway. collected perhaps 15-20 minutes after ringing. Food was hot when I got home it was all clean food and full of flavour. Couldn't recommend enough. Bad reviews must have gone on a bad day because I cant think of a single negative cant wait to come back to mersea

Phoned up my order at 6.30 told to collect at 7.10. Arrived at just after 7.10 and the order was not even started. I waited in there a farther 30 mins, in which time I studied what was going on. The phone orders are left on the desk and not processed until they take your money. So don't bother to phone your order through there is no fast tracking. The young girl about 17 working in the visible kitchen was worth her weight In gold it's a rare thing to see someone so young work so hard. So was the food worth the wait NO!!!! It was cold very disappointed. I will say the kitchen seemed very clean.

Phone ordered ahead so avoid waiting in cramped seating area. Was told 30 minutes. Arrived 35 minutes later. Then spent another 45 minutes sitting there waiting. This has happened on at least 2 occasions now. If you can't keep up with the orders just be honest with waiting time. At least 2 other customers in my same predicament tonight. Its a shame because the food is pretty decent. I'm now not going to use you ever again now though, put me and my family in a complete foul mood now. Thanks.

Great food, best chinese we've ever had and fast service.

We visit Mersea every weekend to stay. And we discovered this take away just recently. The foods always lovely, its always busy, the girls on the front desk are always chatty, polite and friendly. The kitchen is open so you can see evetything. Smells are lovely and everyone working there is friendly. We are leaving our weeknd place there this weekend as it is sold so their chicken chow mein and prawn balls will be very missed!

Ordered our meal for family of 4 by phone. We were told it was a 55 minute wait - fine we said, we'll collect at 8pm.

Best takeaway on the island. Good food, clean, open kitchen. Good quality. I docked a star as their range is a bit limited. Pleasant staff.

Very tasty grub, the flavours were amazing; we had the Kung po chicken with chilli, steamed rice, egg fried rice, chips, Singapore noodles, stir fried mixed veg, chicken curry, prawn balls and crackers. Will definitely be coming back!

Very busy Saturday night the food was poor and tasteless..

We ordered crispy chilli beef, was in a tin foil box in a paper bag. All the sauce came out in the bag of food as this dish never had a lid. Rang to complain and was told they don't supply a lid for this dish. Complained and they hung up after saying we could have a refund. Would you serve a curry without a lid think not

The staff are friendly and helpful. They are quite happy to cook to your requirements and the food is very tasty.

We always use this Chinese - never had a bad meal. They've even made something specific for me that wasn't on the menu before :-)

Whilst staying on Mersea Island on holiday we wanted a Chinese takeaway and so visited here on our last evening. Situated conveniently by the car park in West Mersea this restaurant is clean and modern with a food hygiene rating of 5. The service is excellent, helpful and quick. The food is delicious. I particularly enjoyed the broccoli with ginger. Would recommend most highly and would definitely visit again.
