HOLM Somerset in South Somerset

I can’t say our experience here was terrible, but it was far from exceptional or outstanding. Which, for the price and following other 5* reviews was really disappointing. The menu was uninspiring, and the dishes were tiny - we went home hungry! I think you need to advise people when booking that it is a chef tasting menu only, at £69 per person we probably wouldn’t have booked. Also awful wine, maybe a bad choice but it was recommended by staff, I couldn’t drink it. Sorry, lovely setting and staff but I would not recommend anyone here. Some of the local pubs offer better quality food than we tasted here. I can’t help question whether other reviews are even real, I have eaten in some exceptional, memorable restaurants - but this falls far from hitting that mark.

We had an excellent time here enjoying the outstanding tasting menu for my partner’s birthday. Every aspect was pure perfection - huge credit to the people who manage this place, the kitchen and the front of house staff. They’re all so on point, highly recommended!

This was such a special evening. From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Sean. The room was beautiful and so comfortable. The meal was spectacular. We had the tasting menu and it was delicious. I loved the pasta dish and the torched mackerel but every dish and every mouthful was perfect. The restaurant was beautiful and there was a great atmosphere. The service was spot on. So attentive but not stuffy. Annie looked after us so well and she was so friendly and informative. The breakfast the next morning was also next level. Such a special stay and we can’t wait to return.

Charming venue, staff and location. I praise this restaurant for its hyper local ingredients and delicious flavours - I highly recommend! The staff and manager are so welcoming and professional. The terrace is magical and it's great to see the ingredients grown in the back garden. Love this place!

Have had a lot of tasting menus in the past. This was one of the best. Quite classic but superb flavours. Stayed 3 nights. Would happily go back next year

Quality food, excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere.

This is an exceptional resturant. We visited following the Conde Nast Traveller recommendation and were not disappointed. From our initial welcome from the open kitchen, through the excellent service, to our final goodbye from the chef, the experience was first class.

The food is just great. It’s a very nice place. We stay a night on the way to Cornwall and it was lovely. The room was cozy and the bead comfortable

This is a restaurant whose team has a clear vision of what they want their diners to experience. Luckily for the diners, they have the skill to achieve it, and I have no doubts their ambition will lead to awards. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the culinary journey of tastes and textures that the Chef's Menu took us on. From arrival, we felt warmly welcomed, and the smiling and enthusiastic front of house staff were a plus to the ambience all evening. The service was never rushed, and at no point were we left waiting for the next dish. Each course came timely and was a fresh mouthwatering vision. The menu changes weekly according to what is in season and at its best, which also means new experiences for regular visitors. Every dish we had would be a highlight elsewhere, but on this evening the standouts for us were the cured trout with peas and elderflower, that was like a stroll through an English garden, and the Hogget, with yogurt and red pepper. Each of the three hogget portions showed a different way to highlight the extra flavour that comes from this older meat, and each succeeded, but the belly portion was a true revelation. As well as each dish being well balanced, the overall effect of all the small portioned courses left us both fully satisfied, with smiles of contentment that are still there two evenings later. Little touches throughout the evening reminded me of Michelin Starred restaurants I visited last year in Italy, and I would not be surprised if Holm were to join them in the next issue. The final thoughtful touch was on the bill. There was no charge for the still or sparkling water we requested for the table, instead a £1 donation to Water Aid was the perfect final touch of feel-good seasoning. We have already recommended Holm to friends and family and will definitely be returning soon. Our thanks for a memorable evening. Two nights on we are still smiling about our experiences, as the memory of the flavours linger, as well as telling all our friends and family to visit. We're both looking forward to our next culinary journey with you.

The food here was really nice but not outstanding. The ingredients were amazing and the food was delicate and fresh and we did enjoy it, there were just a few things which could have been better. The cod came with one tiny piece of leek - it would have been nice to have some more vegetables. The pink fir potatoes we ordered as a side were burnt to a crisp and practically inedible. We wish we had sent them back after we saw that other tables had lovely golden brown potatoes. The lemon posset wasn't great as it hadn't set. I wouldn't recommend friends go here. Sadly it missed the mark.

Anniversary meal last night and thoroughly enjoyed. Have been wanting to try Holm for a while and it didn't dissapoint. My compliments to the chef and the staff, it was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone.

The guys at Holm very generously invited my wife and I back after learning that our previous visit didn't live up to our expectations. I am glad to report that this visit absolutely blew us away. We opted for the chefs tasting menu again, and wow! Every course was perfectly balanced, beautifully presented, and left us exited for the next course. The waiting staff were extremely attentive and spent time explaining each dish as it came out, even head chef Nicholas Balfe came to talk to us and also offered an explanation as to why our previous visit may not have lived up to expectations. We very much appreciated this from Nicholas as it proves that not only is he a very talented chef, but he also sees customer satisfaction as an important element with the Holm dining experience. We are very much looking forward to returning and would thoroughly recommend a visit .

We loved our stay with you and have been recommending you to our friends in London. Tasting menu was exquisite and staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfortable and serene with well chosen decor and furniture. Lounge on first floor was very restful. Also loved the landscaped garden and terrace at the back. Stunningly exceptional. Highly recommend. Super friendly dedicated staff. We stayed one night and had the tasting menu (vegetarian version) and everything was high quality and extremely tasty. Locals at the Bloom wine bar earlier in the evening (also lovely) said the signature cheddar fries were like nothing else, so we added an extra side of those, which were well worth it - very generous portion and you can't quite pin point how the potato concoction is so light! We stayed in the cheapest room, Juniper, but it was more than spacious enough. The aesthetic is on point - chic, quiet luxury. Homemade cookies in the room are such a nice touch and robes were an unexpected extra. The one small thing to note with this room is that it's window is right above a staff door so you can hear general chatter a lot of the time. It didn't bother us as we weren't in the room a lot and had a late 8.30 sitting at dinner, but other guests might prefer another room. The breakfast the next morning was also delightful, choice is essentially made for you and everything was delicious, and who doesn't love a breakfast dessert!? The only other small room for improvement would be a dedicated space for check-in and check-out and a flow for guests coming down from their rooms for dinner as the corridor where staff are picking up food from the open kitchen is a little awkward/tight/not obvious where you should stand/wait. We want another excuse to go back!

We were given a voucher for Holm as a Christmas gift and we spent a wonderful weekend there recently. We arrived just as the kitchen team had sat down to eat (the restaurant closes for a couple of hours in the afternoon) but they still made us feel so welcome. The rooms are absolutely flawless - all the comfort of a luxury hotel but without all the clutter. Bathrooms are beautiful (ours even had a window - when do you see that in a hotel?!), beds are super comfy. The food in the restaurant is the star of the show; we ordered everything on the a la carte menu and it was all flawless. Regrettably we couldn't squeeze in the tasting menu but will allow extra time when next we visit. Which will hopefully be very soon.

Had a fantastic lunch at the restaurant- wonderful flavours across all 3 courses, a reasonably priced drinks menu and attentive service. All in all a great meal at a good price for the quality of the food and service.

We absolutely loved our lunch here! Looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary and birthday whilst passing through the area and found Holm. We had the lunch menu, with extras which was great value. The asparagus my favourite dish. The homemade bread amazing. So full we could only manage 1 dessert and 2 spoons. Service was friendly and efficient. Get a seat at the counter so you can watch the chefs creating the dishes! We will be back for sure

Lovely lunch for 4 in this lovely restaurant . Great service . Made to feel most welcome .Highlights were the beignets( nibbles) and the most delicious dark chocolate caramel tart . Pretty village and lovely building .

An overdue post for an incredible dinner we had here a few months back on a weekend away from London. We sat at the counter allowing us to watch the kitchen which was super interesting for us. Everything was had was a 10/10 - special shout out for the rillettes and cabbage with the cafe de Paris butter. We would love to (and plan on) coming back!

We stayed here for 2 nights on a short mid week break. Both the food and rooms are excellent, and the staff are very friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. Would recommend for food lovers wanting a stay in a very picturesque village.

Amazing experience foraging for wild garlic and superb lunch

Holm is a very special place. Clearly, everything about this restaurant with rooms has been meticulously and creatively thought out. Occupying a beautiful Ham stone building in the centre of the village, Holm has a spacious, modern restaurant on the ground floor and two floors of rooms above, together with a studio for residents to relax in. Our elegant room was well designed and very comfortable. The food is exceptional; interesting, subtle and delicious. Served by efficient and friendly staff, our dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented. Holm is definitely a place to visit if you are in this part of the country.

I absolutely love Holm! The food is always excellent, they make the most delicious cocktails, the wine list is eclectic with a range of prices. The decor is comfortable, stylish, not too self-conscious-we had a record player in our private room which was a fun touch! The staff are welcoming, low key and engaging. I'm looking forward to trying the £25 lunch time menu soon!

I recently enjoyed a delicious lunch at HOLM Somerset - off the beaten track but definitely worth coming off the A303 for! The Cornish hake was probably the best fish I've ever had, and the coffee mousse went down a treat. As a regular holidaymaker to Somerset, I will certainly be back on my travels.

We just came to the restaurant and had the tasting menu and were thoroughly impressed. Its one of the best meals I've had in years. We eat out a lot and came here as my wife loves the sister restaurant in Peckham - I haven't been but if it's half as good as Holm I'll definitely be giving it a visit!

Great dinner! Everything from the ingredients to the service of the staff, it was perfection. Highly recommend the deep fried cheese. Fish and bread were divine. Rest was good too.

We had a really wonderful and delicious lunch here for my 30th birthday, all dietary requirements were catered for and the staff even got me a card, felt really special and I will cherish spending my 30th birthday here with my family, thank you Holm!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Holm with my husband, as well as staying overnight in Ash. It was an extraordinary experience from start to finish. The combination of impeccable service, modern décor, and inventive cuisine made for an unforgettable evening. The modern décor lent an air of sophistication while still maintaining a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. It was evident that every detail had been carefully curated to enhance our dining experience. The service at Holm was truly exceptional. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, offering insightful recommendations without ever feeling overbearing. They struck the perfect balance between attentiveness and allowing diners to enjoy their meal uninterrupted and went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our evening. The menu was the perfect showcase for the chef's skill and creativity. It was evident that they made the most of seasonal and local produce, as each ingredient was fresh and bursting with flavor. The menu featured a array of inventive dishes that kept me eagerly anticipating each course. Overall, my experience at Holm exceeded all expectations. I cannot recommend it highly enough and we have already booked to return!

Now this a really great place! Just done a 2 dinner, 2 night bundle and HOLM delivers a very good resto-&-rooms experience. The expert staff were a big part of this. Both the Chef's tasting menu & breakfast were top notch. The former waaay better experience than at L'Enclume, where the 5+ hour timing might suit the kitchen, but NOT these diners. HOLM got it just right with great dishes (nod to trout & blood orange) plus the tempo was spot on. To avoid this looking like a snow job, the loft room was lovely, but the 40+ steps less so, even the dog got vertigo! We will be back as it is really warm & welcoming place both to dine & stay.

Amazing food, fantastic service and great setting.

Came here for dinner for a date night with my husband and it was amazing. Service was great, food was out of this world fantastic - from sides to mains to dessert, and some really nice wines. 10/10 They have both a tasting Chef's menu and an a la carte. If you're wanting to come for the tasting menu, I wouldn't even look at the other menu as it gets almost too difficult to choose then. Especially as their menus change regularly. Would absolutely recommend.

Great food here and comfortable rooms. Lovely little town of South Petherton, all honey coloured stone. There's not much to do locally but the food and accommodation are worth the visit. Saying that, NT Montacute House and Barrington Court are nearby.

Absolutely fantastic stay and dining experience! Nicholas and the entire HOLM team are, simply put, wonderful. We felt right at home from the moment we arrived and were greeted by Nicholas. The check-in process was a breeze, the room (Elm) was beautiful, spacious and charming, and our dinner and breakfast dining experiences were sublime. Nicholas puts such great care and attention to sourcing for the restaurant, and it shows. Despite being up incredibly late the previous night for dinner service, Nicholas and the entire HOLM team were right back at it bright and early to prepare an exceptional breakfast. Everything about our stay was memorable, and we cannot wait to return. Cheers to HOLM for creating such an amazing destination. Everyone should run to book a stay and take in the entire experience!

We stayed overnight for the first time and had dinner and breakfast. What a great experience! The food was superb and the staff were lovely. The room was comfortable with good facilities. Great shower with nice big towels. We slept well with minimal noise. Thank you.

HOLM is stunning. We stayed two nights in the Elm room, which was just dreamy. Beautifully decorated with loads of lovely touches, an incredible bathroom and a huge bath tub in the room. Luxury! We took the chefs tasting menu for dinner and it was incredible. All the staff are lovely. Breakfast is something else too!

We were treated by our children for our anniversary dinner. We had the chef's taster menu and the accompanying different alcoholic drinks; cider, white red wine etc. All was a delight. Lovely staff and atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Luxurious rooms and food. The rooms are brand new and beautiful, with great natural light, comfortable beds, subtle details and a tranquil atmosphere that make for a relaxing stay. The food at Holm is world class and is led by chef Nicholas Balfe, whom alongside his team creates fresh, seasonal and imaginative food, with the menu constantly changing. This restaurant is a must visit, and an absolute destination for anyone looking for innovative, sustainable and most importantly delicious food.

Recently had best dinner of the last year here (chef’s tasting menu - knockout alouette potatoes, peppery venison, insane apple choux bun, and more). Amazing service and great value given the wizardry in the kitchen. Stayed the night too in very comfortable and stylish rooms. Again, excellent value and brilliant all-round experience. 👏💪😇

I never leave revues. But I absolutely love this place! The food is always exceptional! I’ve never had the same dish twice. They change their menu very frequently and only serve the best seasonal ingredients. The interior is beautiful, very nice atmosphere, super nice staff and a lovely outside space in the summer. I highly recommend this restaurant!

This is such a gem in the middle of a small village. Had visited the founding chefs restaurants in London a few times and HOLM did not disappoint. It was a very quiet lunch service, the food and waiting staff were excellent. The drinks selection top quality. We had the set menu, great value and really top level cooking. I would be going out of my way to come here and looking forward to coming back again.

What an absolutely wonderful evening. We will definitely be returning. The dining room is relaxed and elegant. The food was exceptional. Seriously delicious and generous. The service was thoughtful and light-hearted. It all just felt like a good balance. They brought us some Westcombe cheddar fries while we were waiting to order - they were unbelievable! Just wow! My grilled octopus was smoky, sweet, succulent and indulgent. Perhaps it was hungry, but this was probably one of the best things i've ever tasted! The pork with nduja and sweetcorn was brilliantly satisfying and tasty. Then the rum baba desert with peach and yoghurt sorbet WOWOW. So damn good.

Just moved to the area and was recently treated to dinner at Holm. This is a culinary feast to suit everyone. The friendly staff understand the food and have an impressive knowledge of wine. This is an absolute must visit restaurant where you’ll be greeted by the charismatic Fergus and taken care of all evenint

We loved it. Perfectly curated menu. Perfectly cooked ingredients. Perfectly served Perfect! The Scots maitre'd was exceptional and really enhanced our visit.

Absolutely sublime. Food and service were excellent. Astounding value for money. My wife and I went off to change our very poopy baby as the starters came out, and they very kindly remade my wife's starter so it was hot.

It felt like the food concepts were really great but the taste didn’t quite meet the mark. Service was a little slow on drinks - we waited a long time for the first round, and then reordered just as the mains were coming out and the drink didn’t arrive until after we’d finished our mains. The staff were really friendly though so this is somewhere that could be great but just needs a bit of polishing on taste and attentive service in my opinion (looking out for empty glasses for example). We had the Chedder fries, olives, crab & asparagus (nice but it would’ve been nicer as a creamier crab mix with the asparagus on top/surrounding rather than mixed through), Isle of Wight tomatoes, pappardelle (again ‘nice’ but a thicker sauce probably would’ve worked better - mushrooms very tasty).

Great food in an idyllic setting. Everything on the menu was very tasty, great presentation too! They even whipped up stuff out of the menu for vegetarians to give them more options! Service could have been a little faster - Could be a factor of us being a large group of 9 though. Dog friendly.

What can I say, other than that the food served at Holm is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced before. Every course was served with precision and thought. I was lucky to be able to sit at the Kitchen Counter seating which gave me such a great experience of seeing how the kitchen works. The staff are so lovely and engaging, I definitely will never forget my meal at Holm! Thank you Chef Balfe for creating such a great menu, I will be back.

The food at this restaurant was simply exquisite. Each plate was a masterpiece, with fresh ingredients and perfectly balanced flavors. The lamb dish, in particular, was outstanding. Our server, Matilda, was a true professional, handling a table of ten with ease and grace. Despite the pressure, she remained friendly and accommodating. This hidden gem in the English countryside offers a fine dining experience with impeccable attention to detail and a delightful atmosphere. One of the best dining experiences I've had.

I drove from South Devon to HOLM Restaurant and it was definitely worth the trip! This place is truly Michelin star-worthy, and I was blown away by the creative dishes, impeccable service, and smart relaxed dining atmosphere. The interior design is cool, with a modern and sophisticated feel that perfectly complemented the vibe of the restaurant. Every dish we tried was expertly prepared and presented, with unique and creative flavor combinations that I haven't experienced often. Considering the exceptional quality of the food and experience, the prices were very reasonable and not too crazy, 1.5x good pub grub prices. Overall, HOLM Restaurant is a truly special find that is worth making the trip for. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves creative and delicious food, exceptional service, and a trendy relaxed dining atmosphere that doesn't rely on stuffy tablecloths.

Beautiful meal, looked amazing on the plate, tasted even better. My favourite dish was the Ricotta Gnudi! Fabulous service, will definitely be back.

Absolutely exquisite in every way! Really special. Food was divine, service was friendly, atmosphere felt like you were in a boujee Cotswolds restaurant! So many nice little touches like candles in the loos, and being able to watch the chefs work in the kitchen was great too, they seemed very happy and relaxed indeed. Very pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Would love to go back!

Small portions, over complicated menu, very overpriced, the food is good but not exceptional.

We’ve only lived in this fabulous village for 4 weeks, but this was our second visit, with more already booked. We don’t ‘do’ Valentines, but the menu for this at Holm was too tempting!! The tasting menu was beautifully put together and executed at the highest level. Generous portions of exquisite food. Chef Nicholas comes out to greet and chat, and the service from Fergus and Cody makes your evening. Perfect!! See you very soon.

My wife and I know good food when we eat and see it. Saturday was special as my wife organised a meal with HOLM as a surprise early Valentine’s night. It was indeed a surprise! The first was the high prices, this set the bar high for what was to come. Unfortunately, that expectation was not met. As well as the full pricing, virtually everything that you might actually want came with a substantial additional charge. For example, the crab pasta starter which was very hot and spicey, which totally drowned out the meagre crab in the actual dish. The dish could have been realistically priced at £8, not the £8 surcharge on top of the already high price. Moving on to the mains; my wife had the steak because she can’t eat pork, this came with a £15 surcharge, way too much for what she was presented with, two tiny rounds of steak with one round of fat. My pork was the same with two tiny pieces and another piece of fat. Fortunately, we had our dog with us. He enjoyed the fat. We ordered and paid for vegetables although the sample menu we saw stated that all dishes come with vegetables and potatoes. We were asked if we wanted potatoes which again, come as an extra charge and were sold as potatoes pressed with butter and then deep fried. We do try to look after our health and this sort of thing does not help. It seems so old fashioned to saturate everything in oil and fat. The desert was very good and was an appropriate portion. Also on the positive, the staff were excellent and really looked like they wanted to make our evening a success. Obviously it would have spoilt the evening to make a fuss at that stage but I do think that diners should be aware of what they are getting themselves into before they land themselves with a huge bill for an inadequate meal. The restaurant was full and the reviews appear to be mainly good but all through the meal the feeling was, is this value? For us at least, the answer was a resounding no. The following day, I wrote to them, their response suggested that I was comparing them to Wetherspoons or Harvester. I actually felt quite insulted by the response with its implication that I do not understand or appreciate Haut Cuisine as if I were an ignorant country bumpkin. An unfortunate and unresponsive reply. We won’t return.

Phenomenal food that really is worth a detour for a very fair price. We had the tasting menu and couldn't fault any dish. Indulgent, warning plates that were perfect for a frosty lunchtime.

The belly pork with nduja was rather bland. Nduja is a relatively new "ingredient" so good for Holm to use it, but dont be put off by people who dont know what it is . It adds " sparkle" to a dish. Perhaps introduce it in a canape? Or put some on the table and let customers add it themselves?

We are so fortunate to have Holm on our doorstep. Saturday was our second visit and it was just perfect. We were greeted warmly on our arrival, shown to our table and in a nice touch presented with an anniversary card. We decided on the ten course taster menu and every course was a bloomin delight. I could go on about the food forever, it is so clever, beautifully presented and marvelously tasty that I don't think I can do it justice. The brigade of chefs know their stuff without a doubt. I went for the drink package and it's worth it for the sommelier's attention alone, he makes it so special. This is not a cheap restaurant by any means, but my goodness it's worth every last penny. We truly love it there.

An amazing experience from start to finish. We had the tasting menu during the lunch service for my boyfriend’s birthday. Everything was perfect, with highlights being both the venison & artichoke dishes. Would highly recommend a visit to this Somerset gem - make sure to leave time to explore the surrounding villages and walking trails.

Just visited Holm for the first time and am already planning our next visit. The food was exceptional, highest quality, presentation was immaculate. Just define. The staff were so helpful and although the restaurant was busy, staff made us feel as though we were the only ones there and nothing was too much trouble. I have some dietary requirements, and was told on arrival that the chefs could alter my meals to accommodate this. It's very rare you receive that level of personal service in a restaurant these days. If you are only going to visit one restaurant in Somerset this year, make sure its Holm...

Fabulous food and wonderful early Festive meal for us . Staff delightful and setting really great . We had a dog with us and she was very welcome and she did behave well . Unusual food and some delicious vegetarian options. Also asked about dietary requirements when we sat down. Great selection of wines . We picked the right place to go !

A really outstanding experience, we ordered the chef's menu and found each course more amazing than the last. Every part of our visit was impeccable, what an incredible place.

Food was nice. Some other guests were particularly noisy and appeared drunk. Service was functional with no real soft skills or welcoming feeling. The wife wanted to try it and I would not say not to, but I personally wouldn't go back. There was no real hook that made me think I really want to go back. Food good not great. Decor nice but not note worthy. Atmosphere too loud on this occasion so struggled to talk to others on my table. Price about right. Parking not an issue. Just not for me.

Outstanding. Beautiful tasting menu with a stunning seasonal slant served by friendly and professional staff. We were lucky enough to sit overlooking the kitchen and it was great to watch such passionate and skilled staff at work

Fairly new restaurant near Ilminster, well decorated with distressed wall look. Food prepared & fully visible in the open kitchen. Set lunch menu has 3 choices for each course. They were all delicious & well presented. Wine was lovely iif not a little expensive. Overall a great experience & will be going back in the future.

Nothing to dislike, but no wow factor despite the price

Lovely setting and friendly service. Plenty of inside and outside seating. The food was very good and you can tell the quality. My only complaint would be that I booked for Saturday lunch hoping to be able to order from the A La Carte as there was a starter and main that I really liked the sound of (monkfish linguine and sirloin steak) but only the set lunch menu is served on Saturday. Would be good to make this clear on menus/website/when booking.

During July 2022 I was treated to the tasting menu experience at Holm. I didn't even know this restaurant existed and was blown away by the style, food, service, everything. To have something of this quality so close to home is a real luxury. The food is beyond my review capability to be honest, it just has to be experienced. I haven't really experienced food like it, it was off the chart. You get a real sense of adventure with the menu yet all in very comfortable surroundings and very friendly service. Will definitely look forward to returning and trying more things here. If I had one atomically sized criticism it was that the food did feel rushed as plates were arriving even though we hadn't finished the previous round which meant we couldn't fully relax as we felt we needed to concentrate more on eating quickly. This did get better through the courses which I was relieved about. If there was a 6 star button I'd press it.

Loved everything about HOLM!! Delicious food, lovely ambiance and friendly staff!! I’m from Boston Massachusetts and we have some fine dining too, but this was one of the best meals I’ve had in England ‼️ Bravo!! Linda Zack
