Hollathans in County Durham

With the help of some local friends two Christmas dinners from Hollathans were delivered to our aunt and uncle. I would love to share their response: “Best meal I have had in years” “The roast potatoes were gorgeous” “That gravy was the best we ever had” Thank you for your assistance in making the season brighter for them from thousands of miles away.

We went for a birthday meal. Lovely decorations so christmassy! Very attentive waitresses and waiter. Food was amazing. You can see its so busy and they all work so hard. Can't wait to go again.

Told to sit down find a seat 15mins later drinks came all a bit dis jointed not a good experience

Chased from the bar and told to take a seat, ten minutes to be served 4 drinks

Popular place with all ages. Reasonable prices for variety menu. Big portions. Good crowd.

Great service and delicious food. Good menu choices, lovely atmosphere. Very sensibly priced. Our daughter really enjoyed her birthday meal, as did we.

Went for our Anniversary meal, excellent food, lots of gluten free options and great atmosphere! The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Lovely place to eat and as a Coeliac we had this place recommended to us for gluten free food. Nearly the whole menu is available gluten free, and this is a great job by the chef as eating out can be so difficult when you have Coeliac and you can be very limited for what you can eat, and they also have procedures in place to avoid cross contamination. We regularly go for Sunday dinner and it doesn't disappoint. Lovely gluten free gravy, Yorkies, & cauliflower cheese. We have just recently been there with big party for a birthday & everyone commented on how nice the food was so it's not just the Sunday dinner that's nice. Very clean looking place, friendly staff and they all meet everyones requirements, Coeliac and non Coeliac. We will continue to return here. Well done to all at Hollathans.

First time here and it's a nice addition to the town. Nice relaxed atmosphere with good clientele. Great for couples.

Reasonabley priced food which was well presented very tasty and with outstanding service to top it all off we Look forward to returning.

Fabulous food, friendly staff & lovely atmosphere

Service friendly / food very average and not sure how so many reviews are as glowing as they are! Years ago this was a lovely food place but no longer. Unfortunately not a lot of competition so still able to be a success serving very average food from a menu that very rarely changes.

5 stars all round booked for a meal on a Saturday night. last available table. as busy as it was the staff were very attentive. the manager Elenor ehat a lovely human. natural bubbly personality. people make a restaurant and the definitely gor that right. Now into the food, we had a two course deal that runs 12-7 total bargain. I had the Mussels while the hubby had the ham croquettes. for main we both went for enchiladas, and we were not disappointed. so much so we are returning today for Sunday lunch. can't wait. 32 miles away might just be my new go to. thanks guys, G and I

Lovely girls night out last night. Set on 2 floors we were seated downstairs. Most of us took advantage of the £16.99 2 course + drink. My mussels starter (50p extra) was delicious and the meatballs that a couple of friends had were pretty spicy! Other dishes like pizzas, pasta and garlic bread also were tasty.They also have a 2 cocktails for 1 offer on. Service great and apart from some confusion turning music down (they thought we wanted lights dimmed!😆) we really enjoyed it .

Very good service especially a new young girl I think her name is Brooke I might have got that wrong ,very friendly good personality,and always enjoy our time here ,sat outside after our meal it’s a great addition sitting in the sun

Lovely local restaurant, good service and great food. Value for money, will return for sure Lots of variety on the menu plus specials and a Wednesday steak night which is excellent value

Excellent value special deals available throughout the day. We arrived at 4.20pm for a special 3 course deal for £10.99. This deal involved a choice of starters, followed by an excellent range of chicken, pizza or pasta dishes ending with an ice cream or coffee. I chose the carrot and roasted red pepper soup with freshly baked bread, a Calzone dish containing chicken and ham and an ice cream to finish. I can thoroughly recommend all the courses highly, plentiful and very tasty. My wife chose potato skins, Chicken Teriyaki and ice cream and was complimentary about them all. I can definitely recommend a visit.

Lively place, modest number of tables with very welcoming staff. Food was delicious and over generous. Home made pie was stuffed with tasty meat, vegetables were carrots, swede, parsnips - nice change from peas. Menu has lots of choices and much better then nearby eateries. Don't miss it!

Food and drink was great but service was excellent. We had a large table so sat upstairs...this was ideal on this occasion as we wanted to chat and catch up.

Enjoyed a birthday meal with 2 friends - the meal was excellent and good value - birthday girl got a free glass of fiz - the restaurant had a great atmosphere and we all look forward to a return in the near future. Special thanks to Callum who looked after us a made us all enjoy a lovely evening.

Did not eat in just went for drinks. Good cocktail menu with quite a few on offer. Staff were really good. Offering table service and coming round regularly. Will be back

Went for my birthday Sunday lunch. Was disappointed my husband's meal and all the veg came, and mine came 5 mins later by this time the veg was lukewarm, and mash on my plate was cold. Also Yorkshire puddings were well done.

I visit Hollathans at least once a month for food & drinks. The gluten free options are extensive, which is a massive plus. The food is always lovely, of a high quality & large portions. Sunday roasts are beautiful & one of the only places to serve a GF Yorkshire pudding! Service is great, although there appears to be a high turnover of waiting staff who are being trained.

My son had his 40th birthday there and it was an amazing experience

Drinks service in the restaurant was pretty bad. Took 20mins for my second round from point of ordering to getting it. Wasn't just us, like everyone, table next to us wanted to pour themselves. Food was banging though.

The food was delicious, hot and well presented. Excellent service , friendly staff.

Lovely evening at hollathans as always they never disappoint.. .decided to try something new and wasn’t disappointed… my beetroot and feta cheese starter was absolutely fantastic .. .. and two of us ate 2 courses with 2 drinks each for a total cost of £26… how good is that!!!

Had a sunday lunch recently and it was very nice.The service was very friendly and the location is excellent.Parking is either in free council car parks ir a chargeable park around the corner. I would book a table as it seems to get a steady stream of customers. We shall return at a later date, highly recommended.

The food was excellent, as always. Service was very good too. We went at 4pm on a Wednesday in January, so understandably it was quiet, so quite cold on arrival (the room NOT the staff), but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Can honestly say I've never had a bad, or even mediocre, meal here!

Hollathans used to be one of our favourite restaurants but I feel that over time standards have deteriorated. We had a meal there on the 12th October and after settling the bill we noticed that there was an offer of discount vouchers If we pre booked and put down a deposit for a Christmas meal, so we did. I enquired about when we would get the vouchers and was told that we would get them when we turned up for our Christmas meal. On 14th December we had our Christmas meal, it was okay, there was plenty of food, it wasn’t as good as the first Christmas meal that we had there a few years back though. The problem came when I had my Christmas pudding, it had some red berries on top which I removed and gave to my wife. The first bite of the Christmas pudding tasted odd, other parts also tasted odd yet other bits were fine, it became clear why when my wife tasted the berries, they tasted of garlic and smelt of garlic. We could both smell garlic on these berries but apparently the Chef couldn’t, however the price of the dessert was taken off the bill (this time). However, the deposit hadn’t been taken off the bill so we had to pull up our credit card statements in case there was a problem proving we had paid a deposit, fortunately there wasn’t and the bill was adjusted. What happened next was really disappointing, I hadn’t at that point handed over a tip, it was only after my wife had been to the toilet and I had found some change for a tip that we approached our server again. Immediately after handing over a tip, he produced the discount vouchers. He could have produced them when he verified that we had prepaid, he didn’t, it was only immediately after receiving the tip. The reason that we stopped going to Hollathans so often was because of their “chips”, I recall being served these horrible thick soggy battered chips with an enchilada, I left them and told our server they were horrible, his response was to say that he would inform the chef. That was it, no feedback, no apology, nothing. I did have these “chips” again on the 12th October but at least this time the coating was crispy and I ate them.

Worst Christmas meal I have ever had. Couldn’t cut the meat. Needed a sew for the Yorkshire puddings. Vegetables half raw half over cooked. The only thing I ate was half a roast potato. Absolutely awful for the price I paid! 👎🏽 won’t be returning!!

My partner and I had a fantastic evening here. The staff have exceptional customer service. Never once had to wait a long time to be seated served or topped up. The food it absolutely gorgeous. Cooked so perfectly and presentation was outstanding. I we can't wait to come back soon and try something new on the menu. AND to top it off we had a beautiful bottle of white wine and 2 for 1 cocktails. Very happy customers

I want in for a spot of lunch and soft drinks but was a bit miffed when they kept trying to sell me alcohol and for a Italian restaurant they didn't have much choice in Italian food it was nice but am not going back as it was a bit on the expensive side

We have been going for a while now and the staff are all lovely, food is good quality for the money and very tasty however my partner had mussels the last time we went and he said some of the tasted a little funny, it’s the first problem we’ve ever had with the food. We haven’t had a problem with anything else

We had been recommended to eat here by a local and were so glad we had! Really friendly staff and the food was delicious! Wine Wednesday was an added bonus together with the two or three course deal! If only we lived closer so we could visit more often 😁

We have been coming here for years, food has always been top quality and full of flavour with good size portions and good value. But unfortunately the last two times have not been the same. I can’t fault the waiting staff, but unfortunately the quality of food has slipped, the portions are smaller (half a chicken breast instead of a full that we used to get, in a meal which we paid a supplement) the prices have sky rocketed (especially the drinks) there are supplement charges on most items on the happy hour menu. and the restaurant was pretty empty. I don’t mind paying a little extra for quality but when the food is just average I don’t and would prefer to go elsewhere. This is the second occasion where there has been an extra drink we did not have added to our bill (we didn’t realise until checking the bill on leaving). Unfortunately we won’t be back.

Booked in for 6.30..4 of us.our foot order wasnt taken till after 7pm..restaurant downstairs where we were was.busy.The young staff were trying their hardest but we had to ask the waitress to take our order as we could wait no more.The food was exceptional as always (we have been here a number of times )..but this was the first time we have had to wait so long to be served .Hopefully just a blip on this occasion

Great night in Hollathans. Food delicious as usual but extra special as Keith and Eleanor were in the kitchen! Callum was his usual amazing self! Attentive, funny, professional. Couldn’t ask for better front of house host.

There was a major cricket match on in the town so the restaurant was very busy, yet we still got very good service, and the food was excellent, as always.

Been here many many times and it is excellent! Vegan menu and offers. The lot! Tonight we were ‘that’ table where things went wrong and I was the ‘Karen’ It was a laughable affair as you couldn’t write the craziness of things that went wrong! It never had before as this place is lush! Excellent wait staff and bar staff etc When things went awry tonight, the supervisor Callum was as dreadful as usual but Catherine the manager was amazing. She was all I needed as a vegan being served dairy. This place needs her to move it on. Personable and relatable - what more can you ask for when it goes a awry? A very good appointment! This place is still lush and I’ll be back soon (maybe tomorrow)

Perfect local place for food and drink

Great food with pleasant service. Plenty of gluten free options, even Yorkshire puddings. The mushroom brushetta was very tasty with a bit of a kick in the salsa. Just the right sized portion before the main course. I opted for a roast beef Sunday dinner, which was really nice. Beef was tender, nicely cooked veg and homemade Yorkshire pudding. All very tasty. My daughter, who is coeliac, had an amazing halloumi burger with chunky chips-all gluten free. Service was good and all reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.

Issues with the booking system, so a full restaraunt meant no table (initially). They apologised for the issue and said its a brand new system, food took a long time coming but my 5 star review is for the exceptional staff during a very busy period. No stress, all smiles, very attentive. Complimentary round of drinks as a way of apology before it even got to a state of complaint. Just ahead of the game in customer service. When the food did arrive it was delicious. We will be back, well done to the amazing staff.

Nothing special about this place… atmosphere is lacking, the staff seemed miserable and the food was only ok. Had the sticky beef and it was very underwhelming, nice but nothing worth shouting about.

Great Sunday lunch on father's day

Good quality food. Bit lacking in the veg department, and please stop putting pepper in the swede, it ruined it for me. Some may like it, but with the grinders on the table, people could add their own. Good selection of dishes and desserts for those with food allergies (GF). There was a nice atmosphere and service was good. Great that the touring cars were on the tv instead of the likes of football too. 4 out of 5 for the veg and not having a full sugar coke/pepsi offering on postmix.

It was good of them to fit us in however, The wait for our food was beyond acceptable and then got one meal wrong . Some of the food was not the warmest and some had been reheated. The staff were lovely though and we did get a reduction off the bill for the meal that was wrong . Would I visit them again? If I’m the area and not as large of a group then , yes, I would give them another try.

What a fantastic experience for me and my girlfriend. Servers were always on hand to offer new drinks, bill was promptly served and they all had time for everyone! Chefs were amazing and the food was perfect. Definitely coming back!

Advertised as a bar and restaurant however however if you just want to call in for a drink you will struggle because the tables are always reserved, can't comment on the food because did not eat there.

Lovely place although service was a little slow. It was the first time we had been and it was busy but waiting over 20 or 30 mins just for a drink was a bit much.

Visited as a group of 15 for lunch & drinks. Very well looked after by all staff, made to feel so welcome by everyone. Extensive and varied menu. Food was hot, flavoursome and large portions. Fantastic cocktails. All very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend xx
