Staff appear not to care if you enjoy your meal, not a relaxed eating experience. I had my plate cleared the moment I lifted the last dumpling off it - the dumpling hadn't made it as far as my mouth, and it was more than a polite mouthful! The dumplings (potstickers) were undercooked, the rest of the food was pleasant enough, only the service made this a bad meal.

Terrible service.Food reasonable.Note what you order and check the prices. This restaraunt is like many sadly in China Town that do not offer an itemised bill and add 10% service charge - ironic. When my savvy friend checked the bill we found £15 pounds had been added for nothing. They added 3 times before they would confess. No apology - obviously.Avoid. There are more Chinese restaurants popping up nearer Holborn that have better service that will offer you a digitised bill and won't add whatever they like to the bill.

Went with a friend (we are both from Hong Kong) to try the fayre at HK Diner. We had a baked pork chop, salty squid, tripe noodles in soup and veg. The food was very tasty and authentic. We also had beers. The bill came to about £30 each which isn't the most expensive or cheapest on Wardour Street. The service was disinterested, and where it is expected in other restaurants on the street (Wong Kei) - it isn't becoming at HK Diner. They didn't get a tip(!)

Food is pretty good here. Crispy duck was below average but seafood noodles and chilli and salt prawns were great . Service is surly and we were charged £1 to substitute beef for chicken on a set menu which was just opportunismas beef is clearly more expensive than chicken. Toilets smelt horrible and were not as clean as I would expect. Generally poor service but if you can tolerate this which I could then expect above average food.

I have visited this restaurant many times. The food is very good. I love the salt and pepper beancurd and green bean dish, and the spring rolls are excellent, hot and tasty. When we go up to London for a day out or to see a show we almost always visit this restaurant. The service is brisk and the interior decor is nothing special but it has a nice atmosphere, reasonable prices and good food. It's like a typical restaurant in China, in fact. My husband always enjoys the meat dishes he orders including crispy duck and beef with vegetables.

Can't believe anyone leaving a bad review for this joint, we have eaten here loads of times and it never disappoints. Tonight we went to see Mark Rylance performing in Farinelli and the King which was superb beyond belief, when we came out we fancied something quick and tasty before catching the bus home; nothing could have been more scrumptious than a few morsels from the menu at H K Diner. Sure it's rough and ready, sure there was someone fixing a broken seat with noisy tools, and sure they brought the food so quickly you can barely believe it was cooked in that timescale. BUT it was delicious and about as good as anything available in China Town.... everytime always the same high standard. Having had to accept the loss of the wonderful Poons (long time closed and never forgotten) we have tried umpteen places but none have come up to scratch, to our mind H K diner is the closest we've found and we're pretty much sticking with it for the time being.

I am absolutely outraged by the way we were treated at this restaurant. We eat in China Town often and have been before to HK diner, we remember it being ok, but never again will we step foot in here. We are patient customers as we feel for hard working staff, but the service was exceptionally bad. Won Kei's has better service and that's saying something! I had a duck noodle soup as I had a slight cold, it was awful I couldn't eat it. I still said nothing. My 2 young boys just like to have crispy duck pancakes for their main, I thought it quite steep at £17 for half a duck, but it's what they like. When it came it was really dry, hard and tough as a shoe. My son tried it and it hurt his wobbly tooth. So he just ate a pancake with cucumber. I decided to tell the waiter that it was inedible. The manager came over, gave me evil eyes took the duck and snatched the pancake out of my son's hand! On seeing this I was in complete shock at the aggression and rudeness. I paid for the rest of the food and left immediately. They tried to charge me for tea they never gave us too. I didn't want to pay for any of the food, I was disgusted and shaking at what I'd just witnessed. People who treat customers and children like should not be in the restaurant industry.

After being recommended this place by a friend I was expecting better. The service was standard for Chinatown but I was told the food was amazing. Well, it was hit and miss. The beef brisket was a bit special and not something I expected - would definitely order this again. The crispy duck, pork dumplings and shredded beef were good but most places will do them this well so I wouldn't judge them on this. We also ordered a black pudding dish which wasn't what we expected and was a bit like 'blood tofu' - not tasty and frankly pretty bad. The atmosphere was ok but there are much nicer places in the area. Overall I wouldn't rush back any time soon as there are better places to eat in the local vicinity with a nicer overall dining experience and for the same price or cheaper.

I've heard that the crispy pork in HK Diner was the best in Chinatown and frankly I just had to try to see if it lived up to it's hype. Late lunch on Thursday and there was plenty of space and the waitress was friendly and well mannered. The food was tasty and quick. I ordered the curry beef brisket and the taste was good and done in proper HK style that you could eat in the cafés in HK. The verdict on the crispy pork? It was crispy enough and tasted well but whether it's the best? I'll need to try the rest to come to a conclusion! I really enjoyed my visit and will definitely come back again though and that's for sure.

My friend recommended it, so it probably deserves more than average, but based on my experience, it wasn't great. I ordered Malaysian noodles without prawns. I was surprised that the waitress agreed to do it, but more surprised that she didn't speak Cantonese, the language spoken in Hong Kong. The service was pretty good. The waitress was polite, and the food arrived quite quickly. Not as fast as the diners in Hong Kong, but hey, we're in UK. The dish was a decent size for £8.50. It consisted of roast pork, chicken (prawns, but I'd asked for them to be left out), spring onions and probably other veg, but I can't remember and flat rice noodles. It was labeled as spicy, but I couldn't taste any spice in it. So I had to add some chili oil, which was available on the table. I also ordered a honey dew melon bubble tea. It was so dilute, that it could've been any flavour. My friend, who recommended the place ordered pigs trotters. She said that it hadn't been cooked for long enough, and so it was very chewy. She also added a lot of chili oil to it. She ordered a tea, which was overly sweet.I know I have complained a lot, but it is still much better than a standard Chinese takeaway.

Visited early Friday evening on spec, faced with the large number of similar looking places in the area this one looked decent with a comprehensive menu.We were seated quickly amongst a small number of diners with loud dance music playing . We chose one of the set menus which, although quite expensive, is to be expected in central London. The food came quickly, was as described and although in small portions was just about adequate for two. I'd have liked some more spice and flavour, the stir fry vegetables in particular were quite bland. However, I have to repeat what everyone seems to say, the staff were really poor. There was no communication, explanation, description or acknowledgement of any kind, once we'd ordered we were served food followed by the bill in silence. The bill comes with a little Chinese writing and a total amount, which seems to reflect the food and drink totals plus an arbitrary service charge, which in the circumstances is a bit of a cheek. So, our set meal for two plus 2 drinks and service came to £46. I think there's probably better food, service and value in Chinatown, so I won't be returning.

I'd give them no stars if I could, here's why: The staff have not even the slightest resemblance of the basic manners and service that was expected from something they describe on their website as 'a must-have dining experience'. We weren't expecting much but a smile would have been nice. There was even one staff member coughing by the bar and not even covering their mouth.. Who then continued to work. After waiting through almost 15 mins of ignorance from the staff, the manager finally came to serve us. Adding insult to injury we were then refused service because we were only eating a dessert and having some drinks. I couldn't understand why they would turn away business being half empty.. The manager just walked away and left us.Their website also describes the restaurant described as 'The Real Deal' and 'deservedly popular'. I'm not sure where they got this sense of grandeur neither can I see this as anyone's must have experience. In short I would heavily advise any would be customer to walk past and try another place. The poor customer service, disregard for basic hygiene makes this a poor example of what London's Chinatown can offer. You'd be better off blindly trying the next available place..

Fried pork, in rich slated butter sauce with crispy onions all the baked to give the dish a nice crisp but moist finish on a bed of noodles. We ordered a few of our favorite dishes - crispy seaweed, crisp duck, singapore noodles and something with scallops. The seaweed was too salty, the duck excellent and enough cucumber and scallions were served with it to fill the pancakes. I had to chuckle as I asked for a small portion of duck sauce [sweet and sour] because I like to use it to cut the spiciness of the Singapore noodles and for the 2 tablespoon portion they charged 1 GBP or about $1.60. Singapore noodles were nicely done and the scallop dish was also good but a bit mislabeled as a lot of vegetables are listed but you only get to pick one of them for the dish. Went in for desserts with some friends for desserts. A absolute disaster from start to finish. The desserts tasted horrible. The mango pudding was rubbery and the sweet bean curd was bitter and rancid. The waiter felt he had to point out there was a 10% service charge (though this should always be discretionary), yet the service consisted of wait staff chucking the items on the table with a sour face and for us to figure out what was whose. This at a time when the restaurant was half empty. Don't want to know what it's like at peak times. When we asked for the bill, they tried to charge us for an extra dessert, and when that was pointed out, there was no apology, instead we were made to feel that we had made such an imposition by pointing out their mistake. The only time they paid any attention was when I ducked downstairs to the toilet after I finished eating and returned upstairs to see a relieved waitress who must have thought I'd done a bunk. I rather wished I hadn't gone to the toilet though, as not only wasn't there any toilet paper but they were filthy with water (or urine who knows) all over the floor. Considering this was 5pm and not late at night after a busy evening you'd think they'd be in a better state than that.

We opted for this place as it was quite late in the evening and other places were shut, so we thought why not? It started out quite well as we were seated almost immediately. The menus were then thrown on our table, and 10 seconds later we were asked whether we had made up our minds up of what we wanted to order yet... A little ridiculous and rushed in my opinion, we hadn't even had time to take our jackets off! We eventually ordered and the food arrived shortly (which was actually quite decent), but whilst you are eating be prepared to be rushed out or constantly stared at, and this made us feel very uncomfortable. Anyway after that there was no way I was staying as he literally shouted and swore at me.Weird thing is I wasn't even that bothered, if they had been polite I would have been more than happy with a pot of tea.I ate in a restaurant opposite and had a lovely meal. Their loss.

We ate here and though the food that two of us ate was fine, the other wasn't acceptable as there was a foreign object (piece of metal) inside one of the dishes. This was reported immediately to the manager who replaced the dish within minutes. However this followed on from being served the wrong drinks! To top it off, they added the 10% service charge on top too at the end. This was removed due to the previous issues and to be honest we were not impressed by the service. Perhaps they could replace the plates too as they were chipped. For the prices they charge I'd expect much better and I certainly don't expect to find a foreign object in any dish!

What a disappointment this restaurant has become. I used to rave about it but it really has gone to the dogs. How can they be allowed to list Crab Claws on their menu when they don't contain crab! When challenged one waiter confirmed that they contained no crab and the restaurant manager told me he had no idea what was in them. This is no longer the HK Diner I raved about. This is a good example of a restaurant that relies upon passing tourists and the management don't care if they ever come back.

China town is overpriced for what it is but HK Diner has ok enough food to normally mean you take it on the chin if in the area. However, they do overcharge (the bill is in Chinese and they will add extras if you look like you've had a drink) and they add a service charge without telling you. The staff are incredibly rude and unwilling to listen to customers. Don't think the food is worth the hassle when there are so many other better and cheaper options. Give this place a miss.

I've been making my way through Chinatown lately and HK Diner was the latest establishment to try out for lunch. I've actually been here quite a few times in the past but as the restaurant is open until really late, it has always been at around 3am with friends when we're all drunk and peckish after a night out in Central. So it was actually quite interesting to experience the food with a clear, sober head.I really like this place. It's typically Chinatown, so don't go expecting warm hugs and red carpet treatment. But the menu is really good. Fantastic choice of refreshing bubble teas and a really expansive menu - authentic cuisine (braised meats, preserved veg) along with the Anglo-Chinese dishes that Western palates may prefer. On my most recent visit, I ordered 3 dishes to try. I was curious to see how HK's Cantonese Roast Duck and Crispy Pork Belly held up in comparison to some of the Chinatown greats that are renowned for their BBQ cuts. I'm pleased to report that this place more than held its own. I still think that Four Seasons can rightfully claim the top spot when it comes to BBQ (nothing can quite trounce the soy sauce that their duck is served in) but HK is a formidable runner up. The crisp duck skin was perfectly rendered and had that lovely charred, caramelised taste to it. The belly pork had a great crunch. And the portion sizes are very generous. I also ordered the baked rice with pork, butter sauce and onions as this is one of their signature dishes and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Really yummy comfort food, though, for the waistband's sake, perhaps not a dish to eat every day!Come to think of it (and this may just be a one-off) but I think this is the first Chinatown venue I've been to in ages when all of the dishes arrived at the same time. So, props for that. And - HK is also marginally less expensive than other places in the area, without compromising on the quality and quantity of the food.Perfect place for a pick-me-up at lunch or a pre-theatre meal!

I have tried many bubble tea and this by far has the best. The mango pudding is also delicious. My regular dish is the baked Portuguese pork chop on rice, nice and hot and filling. This has always been my favour after hours chinese.

The food ordered here was delicious, the duck was a little too fatty but all in all, the food was pretty good. The portion was also pretty decent for the price paid. The only downside I have about this place is definitely the staff, it really does make a difference when you hire friendly staff, a lot of restaurants forget this key concept.Nevertheless, yes I would probably come here again for their baked Portuguese rice- it is so good!

HK diner was somewhere that had been recommended to me by someone that is a regular to China Town so I was happy to give it a go. On arrival we were met with drab decor but had been warned not to judge it by first impressions and at 5.30 was filled with people which is always encouraging. We couldn't fault the food and at £53 for soup, duck, mains and rice for two was also good value. The issue we had was with the service which was absolutely abysmal. Our drinks were thrown at us, the waiter didn't speak when we ordered and whilst the first course was speedy we waited an hour before our plates were even cleared. Upon getting our bill and refusing to pay the service charge we were met with shouting in chinese from several waiters and the manager and glares upon leaving. We will certainly not be going back and whilst we'd hoped to celebrate Chinese New Year in the area tomorrow, we've unfortunately been put off.If I could award negative rating points for customer service I would.

We visited this place after reading positive reviews at the at Time Out London, but they couldn't have been more wrong. The food was very poor, even though the prices were ok it didn't really worth it as more than half of it was left behind. Quick service and the waiter serving drinks was attentive and polite, but the person that was serving the food was just throwing it on the table without even asking who ordered what and it was six of us there. Would not recommend it to anyone. Really bad value.

Looked for a great Chinese restaurant in Chinatown after watching Thriller in the West End.Read a few reviews on the internet and this came out well. Not sure this was a great restaurant; I guess I'd say its about average. Its the kind of establishment you'd go after a few beers. The food was tasty but just not that special. If you're looking for somewhere to eat late after a show, this is the place; it stays open until 4:00am. That I guess is its point of difference.

Very rude service, if you look for a place to enjoy a relaxing and happy meal, this is not definitely the place. Also some things in the menu are a bit disgusting; they heat the food in the microwave and they don't even achieve to do it right. The only good thing is the duck and the deserts, but there's a lot of placed around that offer the same quality but at least they let you finish your food before kicking you off the place.

This is one of the typical China Town late night joints in London that seem t almost ride themselves of poor, brusque service. It's become almost an institution! Although, they're much better than Wong Kei's down the road. The thing that draws me back to this place again and again is not the drab interior, permed owner or bored, seemingly trapped staff, but the fantastic crispy skin pork - some of the best in London. They also do a great selection of tapioca pearl bubble teas (try the coconut!). Sure there is nothing authentic or innovative about the food here, but they're not trying to be. This is a great spot for your MSG fix at the end of a heavy night.

Based on its reviews in timeout and elsewhere, we went here for dinner. It was a disappointing experience as the food was extremely dull and not cheap. The sauce on my Schezuan squid definitely came out of a bottle and had no zing to it at all. I only ate my meal out of politeness to my dinner companion. Their meal was equally bland and poor quality. The decor is equally dull and the service was erratic. Our waitress was very nice but then tried to overcharge us by ten pounds. I won't be returning to HK diner and don't recommend it at all. I can't understand why they get good reviews.

Had seen a good review on some website for this place, so popped in on a wim. On the outside, it looks great, but once inside, you realise that it's no better than any bog standard asian buffet. The food was overpriced and smacked of being "westernised", perhaps there was a more "authentic" menu available, but it wasn't offered to us.This was overpriced chinese take away food, don't waste your time. Only saving grace was polite service.

Spotted it in Time Out and tried it with family and friends. Food was good and quality price is good too. For 7 of us, we paid £120 all included. Except the desserts, we tried various dishes from starters to main course (eg. from the traditional Peking Duck to steamed eel in black beans sauce), that we found very good. The room for improvement is perhaps the service and the decoration. The former, despite being friendly, could be more timely for taking orders and bringing courses. The decoration looks like a very cheap and not very warm/friendly diner place. That is shame, because the food is good.

fancied a chinese after a show and tried this on a recommendation. The staff were nice and the food was ok but we were rushed, as soon as one of our party had finished they whipped their plate away while everyone was still eating, we had a set menu of starters, duck and mains but there was no time to digest your food before the next course was brought out. at the end of our meal the bill was put on the table without even asking us if we wanted anything else. We queried our bill as it looked too much and was told there was a 10% service charge added. If we had not checked this we may have also paid a tip. At the bottom of the menu it states a 10% discretionary service charge will be added but they dont give you the option as they already include it in your bill. So beware!!

A few years ago we went to the Queen's Theatre to see Les Miserables. After the show we walked down Wardour Street and came across HK Diner. We ventured in with five friends, making seven of us in all. We all thoroughly enjoyed everything we had ordered. I wrote a review which was published in September 2011.In early December 2014, we wet to the Prince Edward Theatre to see the new version of Miss Saigon. Remembering our visit to HK Diner some three years ago we realised that we were close enough to walk there at the end of the show, and hopefully have a meal there again as we had so enjoyed our previous visit. Thankfully, on arrival, we saw that there were many diners there but no queue of people waiting to be seated which meant we were immediately taken to a table. We ordered Szechuan hot and sour soup and West Lake minced beef soup for starters to warm us up. We then had crispy noodles with prawns and Singapore rice noodles with one chili. The starters and mains were served in very short time, piping hot, literally steaming and delicious in all respects. There had been no deterioration in the attention to detail shown by the staff, or the quality of the food we ordered, since our previous visit three years ago. Three cheers for HK Diner. We'll call again whenever we are visiting anywhere close by!!!

We chose this because I had seen a review on an London website. Not disappointed. Food was great, very busy place but with good atmosphere. The only thing was having our plate whipped away from us before we had actually finished! The crispy fried chicken was excellent. Not the place for a romantic or "smart" evening out but great at the end of the day when you really just want to eat.

I had lunch there twice. Not traditional cantonese food as those in Canton China. They added addiitive to make the prawn tender and fresh, which is not healthy and tasty. Natural food are better. NOT recommend in a Chinese's opinion. There are many other Chinese restaurants you can choose in London. Do not think that Chinese food are bad when you chose a not-good Chinese restaurant in London.

Food prices significantly more expensive than similar dishes in nearby restaurants and they add 10% service charge too! On our way to a London casino, my friends and I decided to have a bite to eat as we were a bit peckish. Walk into the restaurant and were immediately shown to a table. We ordered half a dozen dishes, the order arrived promptly. The food were quite tasty and of a good size portions. The prices were about10-15% higher than the neighbouring restaurants. The seating arrangements were cramp and not comfortable. Its O.K. if you want something quick to eat.The other downside is the parking charges are very expensive, but what do you expect, everything in London is at premium rate!

After reading about this place on the Time Out website, we decided to head here and narrow down the vast choice in China a Town. The food was great, generous portions, we had Singapore noodles - lovely and spicy, if I'm being picky the meat was a bit limited, spicy chilli chicken, which was delicious and didn't disappoint on the spice. We also had salt and pepper ribs and soft shell crab, which were both gorgeous. The downside, the plates were whipped away as soon as the chopsticks hit, I personally cannot stand this. We were, after we'd eaten, being not so subtly encouraged to leave to make way for new customers. I get this but literally, we'd finished less than a minute and the Bill was delivered to the table. It felt very much like, 'we've had your money now please leave.' Would I go again? Yes probably but I'd be mindful that we should expect to leave with indigestion, and, feeling a little bit like I'd overspent. £36 for the above with one Chinese tea and a can of coke.

HK Diner isn't going to blow your socks off. We're in London, not Rowland Heights or Singapore. Food is really good actually! The Duck is really good. I asked for the Black Bean Chicken to be extra spicy, and they didn't hold back. Large menu to satisfy anyone. Lots of families were all eating Duck on Rice or Chow Mein. However, they have a large selection of seafood also. 3 dishes, 2 beers, and 2 Cokes for 40 pounds in the heart of Chinatown. Not overly crowded, and not too loud. Service was friendly but just don't be shy. Flag those waiters down haha. Ain't nobody got time for checking on you if you're okay. This is the true Asian diner experience anyway. I would definitely recommend this restaurant above others in Chinatown. Those buffets look both boring, sketchy, and tourist traps. HK Diner was filled with locals and the unnoticeable, adventurous tourist.

A tight venue, as many reviewers have said, and service a bit on the slow side. Having said that the 3 course dinner for £20 per person was great, filling and very tasty. Drinks are expensive at £3.80 for a 33cl bois is good value. Drinks are expensive at £3.80 for a 33cl bottle, but there is a huge variety of bubble teas available, if sucking slimy tapioca, in a flavoured juice, up a very fat straw floats your boat!. I would say this was better than average but wouldn't make it to very good.

The food was of reasonable quality . but not everyone enjoyed .When the bill came we asked them to remove discretionary service charge so we could put cash or our choice . they started to about at us and ask why. They did not seem to understand what discretionary means . then the manager came to us and started shouting at us and saying that that's his wages and we must tip. We did not decline but preferred to pur our tip to waitress .The manager then shoved us, took our tea before we finished and told us to get out and never come back . his and his staff shouted at us and we almost felt we were about to be assaulted in front off other diners. What a bad service. I question the use if the word discretionary when you are near enough insulted for wanting to pay tour own tip .
