Hay Barn Cafe in Newark and Sherwood

We visited here as a Christmas treat we were told there was a wait which was fine after about 30 minutes we were notified our table was ready, the cafe is cozy and intimate but with a general feeling of ease about it, I chose the liver and bacon which was delicious and my daughter had the Brie and bacon toastie which she said was gorgeous, my grandson had beans on toast which they very thoughtfully brought a bit earlier than ours so he could be getting started, we felt it was reasonably priced for the quality of the food and we will definitely return Thankyou so much xx

Wow! Had heard great things about this little place and decided to treat my mum to lunch here. Arrived and it was very busy! Got given a beeper and told there were 3 tables ahead of us (no booking system.) Finally got seated after about 30 minutes and my goodness - worth the wait! I had a mocha which was delicious and ordered the brie and redcurrant jelly toastie. Had it with bacon and it was sensational! Mum had the liver and bacon which she said was delicious! My little boy got a half portion of beans on toast that was just perfect for him and reasonable (no kids menu but just half the portion, half the price from the main menu which made perfect sense!) Prices for the quality and enjoyment of the food were great in my opinion. We were eyeing up the cakes but we're just too full on this occasion but we'll definitely be visiting again! There was an amazing winter warmer deal on with soup and a sandwich that seemed really popular! Great service too from friendly staff who couldn't do enough to help! This place is a little gem!

Was great to be back at The Hay Barn for some excellent food after a few weeks of not being able to get there due to various commitments. Had the giant breakfast, coffee and takeaway cakes x 2,yes I'm greedy....The wife had egg benidict with apple juice for refreshment and also x2 cakes lol... Outstanding quality,cooked to perfection and service exemplary. Love coming here....we shall be back ASAP...

Met a friend here for lunch. As we have visited before we knew that the food was really lovely here. It was full when we arrived but was told there should be a table free in 20 to 30 minutes. As it was a little chilly we went to wait in the car as we were told that we couldn't wait inside. After an hours wait ... and some concern to the time (we needed to be somewhere) we went inside where we saw 2 empty tables. On entering we weren't acknowledged for several minutes and then sent outside again to wait. No apology, no smile. We did as we were told but felt very uncomfortable. The 2 tables were not really dirty, just required a couple of coffee mugs to be removed and a quick wipe. However, after 5 minutes of being made to stand outside in the cold, and still not invited in to sit at a table ... which we had now patiently waited an hour and 10 minutes for, we made the decision to leave. Such a shame as although the food is very lovely here, we probably won't be visiting this establishment again due to the rudeness of some of the staff. On our other visits we had the most fantastic service so I guess it depends on who is hosting on the day.

Came here on Thursday for a catch up with my daughter. Not been for a while. But as usual, was not disappointed. I had the ham, eggs and sautéed potatoes and my daughter had the homemade soup. Then we took a couple of slices of St Clements cake home for my daughter & my husband. I chose the ham because I knew it would be good quality and it was absolutely delicious! Lovely thick cut slices that crumbled in my mouth. Was absolutely delicious!!! I love the extra touches, like rugs over the chairs incase you’re feeling cold and a buzzer if there aren’t any tables so you can wait in your car. As usual fabulous service from the team. Thank you - we will be back!

Husband and I have been talking about coming here for a while, and today we tried it for the first time. It IS very popular (no surprise there) so we had to wait a while in the sunshine to be given a table. We checked out the menu and topped up our tan, and once we had a table we were able to order almost straight away, drinks came quickly, food took a little longer - because it is freshly cooked and pretty much everything is made on the premises. I had the tuna cheese melt, husband opted for the chicken & mushroom pie from the 'specials' board, and it WAS special. It also defeated him, so I had to help with some chips which were exactly like my grandma used to make. It didn't stop him buying a huge slice of coconut cake to bring home for tea. Great service, good food, and really good prices. We'll be back soon. Make sure you are hungry before you visit!

Me my mum and grandma went to the hay barn and omg was it incredible we had the ploughman meat platter the posh fish finger cob and the rump steak sandwich that was on the specials as well as the tiramisu brownie that was the perfect combination of sweet and rich The staff are lovely making sure you love your meals I would highly recommend going

Another exceptional visit to The Hay Barn...went around 2pm and straight in...Fantastic customer service by all who were working ,very friendly and lovely to talk too. Ordered off the specials board..had the BBQ Bacon/Cheese Burger 🍔 with chips,salad and coleslaw... It was superb,best burger I have had and the BBQ sauce was beautiful, then for an treat we had Summer Berries Chesecake with fresh cream...in a word...WOW.. Def going to have that again...so we will see you again very soon... Thank you....

I come here regularly, if not for breakfast it's for lunch. Sometimes it's just me and my husband, sometimes we bring our daughter with us. The staff are all wonderful and very helpful, the food is freshly made and always tastes amazing. If I haven't room for pudding I take cake home with me (sometimes I've eaten pudding but still take cake home with me for later). We have also had a cake made to order from here which tasted AMAZING! (butterscotch tart for those who were wondering) There is items for sale from little local makers which is always worth looking at (the biscuits are lovely and if you like the ones that come with coffee you can buy those too). Sometimes when it is full we have had to wait - most we've waited was 40 minutes but it is worth the wait for high quality food you get given, most of the time we know what we'll order as we follow on Facebook so always see what's on the specials board weekly.

Just had the ploughman’s lunch one meat and one cheese it did not disappoint plenty of ham and cheese coleslaw salad warm bread roll The staff were charming very helpful nothing to much trouble would definitely recommend this charming cafe a hidden gem

Went to The Hay Barn on what is now a weekly visit......and once again sheer perfection for the food,the giant breakfast and salmon with avocado and all the trimmings...it was PERFECT.. More important is the staff who work there,they are all fantastic, superb,lovely and make you feel so welcome...I love it.. If you haven't been yet...why?

Not been here for a while so decided to call for lunch on a Monday. We had a short wait in the car with the buzzer system which in my opinion is a good idea saves you waiting outside in cooler weather. It was quiche for me delicious and my husband had the chicken chill burger with homemade chips 😍. The cakes looked amazing as always we were nearly tempted to have a takeaway which is handy. Can’t wait to go back when the weather gets warmer as the out door seating area is lovely. Thank you Hay barn ladies always friendly and have a chat .

My first visit, definitely won't be my last. The staff were very friendly, service was great, checked to see if we were happy with everything. Cake was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. Saw the afternoon tea being served to some lovely ladies, it looked amazing (thank you for letting us share your table first off). After passing The Hay Barn for many years but never actually calling in, we dropped in for breakfast today, and I’m so pleased we did. There are breakfast options to suit every taste, and my scrambled eggs on toast were delicious. My partner’s breakfast cob went down very well too. The service was excellent and quick, the presentation was lovely, and I really liked that my food was served on a hot plate. It’s little details like that that really make a difference in showing that they care about customers’ experiences. Thank you, and see you again soon!

Wow! What a place. Food is beautiful and the cakes, well good luck trying to choose! Everything is great quality and the place is nice with a farm shop across the way. Not loads of space so fingers crossed you get a table as unsurprisingly it is always busy and is so worth it.

I thought I would write another review after my last one got a not so warm response from the owner. So here goes. The lack of booking system meant they operate a buzzer system that didn’t work for me personally. I walked to the cafe so therefore standing outside in the rain waiting for a table wasn’t a great option for me. (Customers can wait in their car if able to) however it just makes it hard to plan your visit. Once I was seat it did become apparent that it was cold inside due to people coming in and out very often to check for avaible tables or return with their buzzer. I enjoyed my coffee, the food was average to my opinion. I did take some cake away with me as they looked lovely however It was really dry. The staff did seem stressed and I wouldn’t say it was “service with a smile” I don’t think I will be returning more so due to the sarcastic response I got on my last review “ Oh dear, looking at all your other TripAdvisors reviews I think you'd be better off staying at home and cooking for yourself love!” I welcome you to have a read at my other reviews as I am pretty sure I am very fair. Hopefully this review gets a more open response from The owner instead of sarcasm.

Went again to this wonderful place for the 4th time in as many weeks.... Have the giant breakfast again whilst the wife tried something different again,this time the Ploughman's cheese 🧀 variety... Once again, service was exemplary...everything is first glass, and the colleagues are superb.. What can I say other than go asap,...and i shall repeat myself...I will be back next week.. You are the best....

Absolutely delicious Ploughman's Lunch. Choice of cheese or meat or a combination of both. We opted for the meat version and it didn't disappoint. Very good coffee and tea to accompany our food. Fabulous selection of cakes, we took a slice of Orange curd cake home as we were too stuffed to eat it there.

Another enjoyable experience at the Haybarn! This time for a full English. Fabulous quality ingredients cooked to perfection, a great set up for the day ahead. Small wait today but it’s never a problem for us the great hospitality and food is always worth waiting for!!! Thanks to all the staff, we feel lucky to be local to such a lovely place.

A definite 5/5.Quality of food, service and surroundings fantastic. Enjoyed the unusual combination of cheese, fried onions and mushrooms on a toasted sandwich. Pineapple upside down cake is to die for!

What a superb little tea room this is! We dropped in on the off-chance, having driven by many times before saying “we must try there..” We luckily got a table straight away (you often have to wait at busy times I understand) and sat in a really nice corner of the barn. The staff were absolutely lovely and the menu caters for far more than tea and cakes with a good range of breakfast items, lunches and savouries too. Home-made cakes absolutely delicious…! Quality ingredients all round, lots of it locally sourced. Service was fabulous …Very impressed…! We shall definitely be returning!

Visited at lunchtime and we chose the afternoon tea for two . All freshly prepared with our choice of sandwiches & home made cake and warm home made scones. Unlimited tea which the attentive staff were happy to refill Beautifully served and I will definitely look to return when next in this area

Went today around 10am had the Hay Barn big breakfast with a couple of lattes....what can I say other than...it was perfect from the customer service to the food itself,everything was cooked to perfection and the quality was exemplary...Everyone needs to visit this very special place,on busy times be prepared to wait,it will def be worth it....See you again very soon ...

Small, cosy location. Good menu with specials. Produce locally procured and the bacon was particularly good. Popular with no booking system other than a well organised pager system, when you turn up. Popular and deservedly so.

Driving south on the A1 and looked to find a nice place for lunch. The cafe was very busy and they gave us a pager as they had no tables free. We waited in our car for no more than 10 mins which was fine. The staff, atmosphere and food were excellent. Had the pie and a quiche and really enjoyed them all. Will definitely be back to try the cakes next time.

This little place is always busy which is a very good sign - we went for some lunch the other day and the food was really good, service was friendly and attentive - couldn’t resist taking cakes home with us, highly recommended. Need to pop in sometime for one of their breakfasts, they are served all day and look fantastic!

Once again fabulous hospitality from start to finish! We could see it was busy so I asked to be popped on the list for a table. The buzzer system allows you to sit in your car and wait on a cold or rainy day, and after 15 mins we were alerted a table was ready. To us this is no problem and it’s well worth the short wait. We both chose from the special board Chicken & Leek pie. It was delicious!! Tasty Chicken and Leek filling topped with a puff pastry lid, hand cut chips, minted peas and a pot of gravy all served on a piping hot plate. No dessert after as we were full from our lunch but the treacle sponge and custard being served looked very very nice. Definitely one for another time. Always impressed when we visit here. Second visit here it just gets better.. incredible food I opted for the Giant breakfast again and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I can’t express how good the brownies are either. I can’t wait for my next visit 😋😋

Our first visit and it definitely won't be our last. After hearing so many good things about the hay barn we finally got a opportunity to go! It did not disappoint! They have a fantastic buzzer system if they are full when you arrive. The food was phenomenal, I had the giant pigs in blanket special, it was superb! My partner said his scrambled eggs were the best he had ever had! And a huge portion. The service was friendly and efficient. I would highly recommend a visit! We will definitely be back.

I’ve started to plan my car journeys up to the north east so that I can stop here for a break. We had a delicious bacon and sausage cob and a cappuccino this morning. My dog was made very welcome and the staff came over to check in on us a few times. We were seated at the first available table even though it was for six and I was on my own with my dog. The cafe was full and the service was excellent. Thank you for making us feel so welcome and relaxed.

We came here for the first time last Saturday. When we arrived there were no free tables but the waitress came straight to us and gave us an alarm which would alert us when the table became vacant, allowing us to wait in the car. When we were seated we chose the delicious homemade soup and then afternoon tea for two. Everything was absolutely gorgeous and, as we couldn’t manage it all, the lady gave us a box to bring our cake home. What an excellent place to visit. We will definitely be back soon.

Ordered Parsnip soup ( as I know it)!) Unfortunately couldn’t taste the parsnip just spice. I only had 2 spoons and decided it wasn’t for me. I said I couldn’t taste the parsnip . I still was charged full price I think it was £7.95 when they could see it wasn’t touched , so very disappointed with the way it was dealt with as situations like this need to be addressed leaving the customer happy enough with the outcome .

My third review on the haybarn.visited for a number of years once or twice a week and still the best cafe.food still high quality and staff amazing.we visit many great cafes in the area and the UK and have always used the haybarn to set our standards.

Wonderful food and service. Such amazing cakes too - they do a “cake-away “ service so you can enjoy those wonderful cakes at home too! The best tearoom for miles!

We had the most tasty lunch at the Hay Barn cafe. When we arrived they were very busy (a good sign) but they have a great buzzer system so we could wait in our car until a table was available. We only waited 5 mins when the buzzer summoned us. The welcome was warm and friendly. Service was very timely. The food was delicious. We were also able to take some cake away to enjoy later.

Well, I must say, my compliments to the chef. I haven’t had something so amazing in a long time. Splendid! Simply, splendid! A breakfast to remember, Can’t wait to go again. Oh and the Carrot cake I bought to take away was incredible. Can’t wait to go again. Highly recommend the Giant Breakfast 😋😋

Went with freinds, short wait for a table, system well managed. Lovely service, order takem at table. Had a amazing Fish Finger Cob and even better sticky toffee pudding, spoilt for choice with cakes. Will definitely be going back !

Hadn’t been here for a number of years and think it must have been taken over as it has definitely gone downhill. The booking in system is disappointing and not well managed, having to stand outside until someone comes to you, scribbles your name down and gives you a buzzer is not customer friendly and not made apparent at the door. Wonder how this will work in bad weather! Visit for lunch ended up being early tea due to the length of time we had to wait. Staff allowed force young woman to push in before us and several others that were waiting. Then another couple who booked in after us allowed in before us as there was only a table for two available, Ended up sitting outside on a dry but windy day to eat our meal. We were allowed inside when nearly empty to have a hot drink and cake. And guess what the force woman and the older lady with her was still there and sat on the four seater table that should have been ours. The cake was nice but both the cheese and the meat ploughmans were dreadful, over priced, the haslet and pork pie were old and dry, the boiled egg had obviously been cooked for a few days. Stated on menu ‘You will not be disappointed’ Well we were and will not be returning. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited nearly two hours to get served initially and that would have been longer had we not asked if we could sit outside. A lot of people have said they wouldn’t have waited but three friends meeting at a central point after not seeing each other for a long time did, Do yourselves a favour and visit The Birds Nest, Wadnell Lane, Weston or the tearoom at Eakring, so much better.

The food is lovely and fairly priced. Customer service remains lacking. I’ve almost come to accept it here!
