This was a last minute booking because we were running late. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and the food was fresh and piping hot we had chille and it had a lovely heat just after eating it nothing to strong. We had apple crumble for dessert this was made fresh as the dishes were super hot but also amazing tasting will be beck next time am up this way.

Nice wee restaurant and whilst the decor, fixtures and fittings are nothing fancy (& perhaps would benefit from a wee refurb) - the food more than made up for it. Both of us had the steak pie. Good, honest, home cooked meat that was so soft and tender, light and crispy puff pastry, plenty veg and crisp chips. We both enjoyed our meal and we felt it was good value given the portion sizes. Will absolutely return if we’re back in the area. My only feedback would be to perhaps warm the plates first as I did feel my food cooled very quickly as the plate was cold.

Mediocre pub type food. One of the burgers quite inedible. Had been under the impression that this was a different class of restaurant as the older menus from the highly-rated version are still online. Didn’t realise it had changed ownership some years ago. Staff very pleasant though. Until they get their act together go to Tralee fish and chips instead

Myself and my partner ate at the Hawthorn last week. The decor is nice and cosy, a very homely feel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. For starter, I had Highland Mushrooms, which was mushrooms in a whisky cream sauce topped with cheese, and a bread roll. This was absolutely delicious. My partner had the specials starter which was haddock and mozzarella fish cake with sweet chilli mayo which he said was beautiful. I would definitely recommend my starter. I then had mac n cheese with garlic bread, and my partner had the Hawthorn Chicken, which was a breast of chicken on a bed of mash potato and haggis, with bacon and a whisky sauce. My partner’s main was so beautiful we went back a few nights later for it again! I would highly recommend this lovely place for a meal, definitely one of my favourites!

Beautifully located in a rustic setting, tremendous staff and very good food. Portions are generous, all is freshly made to order, bread and deserts baked in house. A must experience restaurant.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
