Haughton Chippy in Darlington

I stopped going to this chippy 2yrs ago Because it was the dearest and the least food served compared to other chippies I thought I would give it another go wish I hadn’t It’s never changed The fish is the smallest portion I’ve ever had from a fish and chip shop Not recommended

Drove all this way to darlo because my Mam always sed it wos gud but was very underwhelmed when they only gave me 30 chip and forgot me mushy peas. Since when does a chippy do pizzas? This is not an Italian restaurant this is a England chip. Anyway UTB🔴⚪️

This is the second time we have ordered from here, giving them the benefit of the doubt from the first poor showing. We ordered fish and chips 4 times. The batter undercooked, fish had no taste and the chips were not chips ( see photo ) They looked like the bits that fall on the floor that other chippies dont use. I like my chips to have potato in them. Check the phot out. We had four plates with these rock hard shavings

We ordered a delivery (direct) from Haughton Chippy as our regular ship shop was closed for holidays. Ordering was not easy. My wife tried on the app, but it did not work, seemingly in a cycle of 'input your postcode' which had already been input, so we ordered on the website. Order prices are more expensive (by about £1 on our order) than collection AND we had a £5 delivery charge, which we accepted as we are five miles away. We ordered for 6.30 - it was delivered just before 7.00. Not a problem really I ordered a Parmo - and that was disappointing. Firstly, unlike when I get a Parmo elsewhere, this was in a pizza type box with the chips on top - congealed into the topping. It was impossible to eat out of the non rigid box and the only way to get it out of the box was to break down the sides and slide it onto a plate, in itself difficult as it was welded to the bottom of the box. The Parmo topping was tasty (with mushrooms and smoky bacon 'extras') but the meat Parmo itself was well overcooked. The crumb on the bottom (and presumably on the top, invisible under the topping, was dark rather than golden, brown and the meat was really dried out. The chips were not too bad but a lot of 'frazzled' bits suggesting that they were the dregs of the batch. At £9.24 plus delivery, not a cheap meal My wife's meal was OK, again the dregs of the chips (probably worse than mine) but a plentiful number of chicken nuggets. Generally pretty poor

On the expensive side. Not great. Fish utterly tasteless. Only visited as the best fish 'n' shop in Darlington recently closed. Won't be trying again.

Not impressed at all , chips cooked some time ago all went in the bin. Fish ok sorry we will not visit again

Not having eaten chip shop chips for over a year I dropped into this fish shop today for lunch. I was greeted by two lovely people son and mother who chatted as my order cooked. I ordered Smokey and chips with scraps. It’s was delicious nice and dry and hot. I will definitely be back.

The worst Fish and Chips I ever had! Arrived cold, tasteless and soggy. Stinking burned oil. Butter undercooked. Couldn't eat this rubbish for 20 pounds (!!!)

Having been a regular customer here for the last 3 years, I’ve patiently waited for the COVID pandemic to pass to be able to order a Parmo on a lunchtime at work again. I was hugely disappointed to be told that they don’t do Parmos on a lunch - despite me ordering many Parmos on a lunch time over the 2 years before the COVID pandemic. The website allows you to order a Parmo at lunchtime, however, there was absolutely no attempt at offering a resolution. Due to this horrendous customer service, you’ve lost me as a regular customer and I’ll no longer be ordering from here.

The Haughton chip shop is definitely 1 of the best in Darlington, there’s never no grease on them, Completely recommend

What can i say. Took 4 months to get a refund. Cancelled an order for 6 fish and chips re ordered for 4 fish and chips. Had to pay for all ten the had to wait for 4 month to refund 6 meals. No apologies had to wait for the bank to intervene. Will not use agsin. Go to our local and they are so much better

Have been checking out fish shops in the area for some time and many mediocre or poor but then last Saturday all that changed. Haughton Chippy, fantastic and easily best fish and chips for miles. Perfect, what more can I say. If you like fish and chips you really must try this place.

Went to the High Grange outlet as this is nearer for us based on good recommendations for the Haughton shop. Found the website to order a little slow and cumbersome and it would not let us amend an error once we got to the basket, this may have been a glitch but it was annoying. The order was prepared very timely and the staff in the shop were very helpful and polite. The fish and chips were okay but a little disappointing based on all the positive reviews as we have had better from other outlets in the town. We plan to use the Haughton shop next to get a comparison.

Thoroughly enjoyed the cod and chips, fresh, boneless, crispy batter. Perfect. And the chips were the best I've had.

I’ve just read some reviews on the Houghton Chippy and will start with one observation. Those who have reviewed as poor don’t really need a chippy. They have a nasty chip on their shoulder already, big enough to satisfy them for years to be fair! If you want good quality fish, chips, pies etc, or great curries and other fast food (kebabs, chicken etc) then you can’t go wrong with these guys. You may wait a bit longer for delivery because they are busy.....because they serve great food. Ignore the doubters....they will be gnawing away on their shoulders anyway. I highly recommend the Houghton Chippy. Lovely staff too. Keep up the good work guys. You have been outstanding during the Coronavirus pandemic. Bravo!

I ordered some fish and chips for delivery which were duly delivered on time but what a disappointment they were, the chips were soggy and my fish was overcooked and dry but my husband said his fish was ok but like me had soggy chips we paid over £16 to put a lot of the meal in the bin sorry but will not return

i was in the vicinity and was looking for fish and chips and after looking at the reviews was a bit apprehensive! however i was pleasently surprised on enterin although a bit outdated interior, it was immaculately clean, staff were friendly and the cod and chips served quickly and was very tastey, was exactly what i was looking for!

We have used this chip shop for years on and off but of late it has been bad. It is nothing special. Sometimes the delivery takes for ever, one time we ordered on line last year after 1.5 hours I phoned as it was getting close to closing time to see where it was to be told the order never went through! It was taken the order emailed and confirmed but was a problem their end! Lady said I will get the owner to ring you, over a year has passed no call! Left a message on fb few days ago to give feedback on the dried out fish and over cooked parmo, they viewed it but never replied!You get a better freshly cooked fish in some of the pubs in the area , how bad is that! I will never use again after the last order!

I’ve been trying to contact the chippy for severalmonths but they don’t reply.We got a delivery, first one ever and it was shocking it took well over an hour and a half and we ordered 4 x fish and chips and we only had 6/10 chips each. They delivered just around their closing time so I guess they ran out or something but it was really really bad. As a result I would never go back...

Just had our order deliverd and the pizzas were so tasty really enjoyed like we always do son orderd a chicken parmesan meal and as always loved them but tonight it was burned and hard so couldnt eat it

This is the second time i used this chippy, on this occasion I realised I could order In advance from my phone. I was on my way from work in the evening around 20 miles from home,I Have never used the phone order, so I thought this would be easier and quicker, so I rang ahead with my order, told them how long I would be. I gave them 20to 25 minutes arrival, I arrived 30 minutes later only to be told I have to wait in the queue ! I asked why I have to stand in a queue when I ordered on the phone, they said 'Yes that is how we do it, don't worry we have plenty of fish cooking.So if you think it will be better to call your order in advance it won't make any difference, you may as well save your minutes on your phone, and waste your minutes standing in the queue !!!

Order a take out from the "Faverdale" shop. Never again. Waited nearly 2 hours. After numerous phone calls we received our order. Food was fairly disappointing. Fish was very greasy with soggy batter. Definitely not worth the long wait.

Bought fish and chips for the family, ohh and a sausage for the dog . Had this order a few times in the past couple of months, the quality is inconsistent and ranges from average to very good . The chips are usually ok but the fish has too much batter on sometimes and doesn’t seem as fresh as other times . I will definitely still use as the service and friendliness of the shop makes up for the odd drop in standard

I visited based on 4 star review. Reasonable prices , very clean and staff really friendly . Nice chips, great peas but the fish was very disappointing-more hard batter with a sliver of fish. I would happily pay more for less chips but better fish.

First time ordering from haughton chippy and we were not disappointed. Generous portions, the food was delicious and fish was excellent quality. Reasonable pricing and very prompt delivery.

This used to be a fantastic chip shop but since opening a second shop its not ehat it was. The wait times for home delivery are poor we ordered using their app at 7:30 and were given a delivery time of 8 but the food didn't arrive till 8:40 no apology was given. This is the second time we've had food delivered later than promised. We ordered mushy peas which were not received and the fish and chips didn't taste as good as previous visits All in all a bit of a disappointment.

We called into Westpark branch and ordered 3 fish and chips and a portion of onion rings the fish was fried to order so was expecting good things unfortunately the opposite first of all the mushy peas were straight from the fridge and microwaved which when we ate were only luke warm the fish was cooked but the batter was very thick and greasy and slimy on the inside same as the onion rings chips were ok nothing special the bill was £21.00 and for the quality of food seemed like we were robbed we should of realised as we visited at tea time and only one other person came in and ordered a portion of chips and they also had no takeaways going out. Will never return!

My brother popped in at lunchtime on Tues 4th Dec to get a bag of chips for niece. Paid £1.50 for a small bag of chips, which when he opened them up we couldn't believe what we saw, or in this case didn't see. No we didn't go back and complain as it would have cost him more in fuel than the chips were worth. Instead we went to The Chip Pan on Nightingale Avenue.

this shop has just opened we bought fish and chips the first day it opened they were very soggy and fish was awful it made my husband and I ill after talking to other people who live close they felt the same we thought well its there first night we will try again so this time we bought fish pattie and chips the chips were soggy and fatty but the patty was so awful the fish was black and slimy it went in the bin never again

This is our local chippy and highly recommended. Portions are generous, chips are cooked beautifully. Staff are friendly and always have time for a bit of banter.

Avoid at all costs, this has to be the worst chippy in Darlington. Chips must be left overnight as the taste nasty... Fish is no better grease think you need to change the oil you are using. The staff seem unhappy, and as for the guy that drives the red car you need to stop speeding around and watch the road before you run someone over...

Amazing quality fish and chips would not go anywhere else. Have picked up and had delivered, no compromise on quality still really fresh!

The only place in Darlington we can order a veggie chippie option on Just Eat. Veggie spring roll, chips & curry sauce for two - excellent.

This is definitely the best fish and chip shop in Darlington. We got a flyer from them the other day and then read about them in the newspaper yesterday. We decided to give them a go. We had never had fish and chips delivered before. We gave them a call and they were really friendly. They came within an hour and I must say that they were really good. It was really tasty, they came really quickly and their driver was smartly dressed in a little van that was all liveried up. Food came in cardboard boxes. Getting your fish and chips delivered is a really good idea and I'm surprised nobody is really doing it other than these guys. Top marks and we'll definitely be using them again.

In my opinion the best fish and chips in Darlington. I’ve been to others and they don’t compare. Chips are golden, batter is crispy and they’re not greasy. There’s a massive car park so you don’t have to mess about looking for somewhere to park and they deliver as well. Consistently good family business. I recommend.

Had a pizza from here last night! It was absolutely lovely, i didn’t know what to expect as it’s a chippy but i was very pleasantly surprised!

Great little family run chippy in Darlington. I’ve been going there since I was a kid. The f food is really good and they deliver. If you want to go there the shop has a car park out back which is surprisingly really big. Must be able to get a dozen cars in and turn around so it’s really good if you’ve got kids with you and don’t want to be getting them out of the car on a main road. My kids love it. They catered jakes birthday party and delivered food for about thirty kids on a Saturday. They’re really helpful and I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere else for my fish and chips any time soon.

I have eaten a lot of fish and chips in my time and this shop is my favourite. Their chips and pale and greasy like some of the others in town. They're a proper traditional chippy. They do deliver too which is great. Not too expensive and really good quality.

What a cracking little find. These guys are delivering fish and chips and they are really good. Food came faster than I expected, was piping hot, batter was crispy and in little cardboard boxes. Not greasy at all and I got a discount when I ordered online. Really good. I would definitely recommend.

This chippy really sorts out family arguments, I’m not a pizza fan, but the kids love it. They get pizzas that they love and i get to enjoy some fish and some great chunky chippy chips, non of those Frozen fries you get from most places in this town.

Haven’t been through to Darlington for a while but glad we passed this place again, had fish and chips in the car with my husband again and they were perfect. Wish we lived a little closer so we could come here more often.

This family owned chippy offers proper, traditional fish and chips - and with so many (naff) chippies around, it’s hard to find the real deal, especially on delivery sites.

Bought 3 portions of fish and chips. Had to take 1 portion of fish back as it was raw in the middle. Staff agreed and refunded for the fish returned but all my family had stopped eating and were put off their food. The chips were all overcooked and limp. This chippy was always a favourite when visiting Darlington but this is the second poor visit. I feel it was a waste of £18 but even worse is the disappointment of a poor meal. I will not be returning to be disappointed a third time.

I cod not believe my eyes! I ordered online a few hours before and found the website exceptionally easy to use. Delivery on time, with a smile and we we're off to a great start.

No sorprende que nos sirve de inmediato en la tienda! No volveremos, encontrarán en otro lugar que es mejor para la próxima vez pescado y patatas fritas.

This is the nearest chippy to my house and I dont drive so if I want fish and chips I don't have much choice but to go there however it is a very consistent chippy and the chips are never rushed or underdog even when it's very busy the fish is good and if I remember rightly they do fish bites for the smaller apitite however I could be wronge about the fish bites I might be thinking of somewhere else. The fish is nice and good quality and the batter is nice and crispy. This is not my favorite chip shop in darlington but it is one of my favorites. It is reasnobly priced and portion sizes are good.

had some fish and chips delivered to work. forgot to order the right amount and no trouble to the restaurant went away and came back within 5 mins to bring the forgotten items that I had left off the order.

Order the family 16 inch pizza for us all; veg special. Massive, whole olives, chunky veg; £8.80. £8.80...what value. Great pizza too. Also ordered a small garlic bread, not quite up to standard but ok and large chips. Unsure it was actually a large chips though, could be more generous on that front but they were good.

Called here last night for food, got a fish, pattie and large bag of chips, then asked for a bag of scraps, to be honest when I got home the bag of chips was just tiny bits of scrappy chips from the bottom of the fryer, ad the bag of scraps had more chips in tun the large bag of chips which for £1.95 was ridiculous, also halfway through the pattie it had a long dark hair in. The photos on the website are nothing like what you get in the shop

Ordered for delivery, when it arrived the food was cold. Apparently problems with delivery drivers. The Spam Fritter was rock hard I am pretty sure it was 'warm up'. The chips were pathetically small

Decent chippy , not the best I've ever had but good if you want a good meal, good portions sizes....

The portions are tiny and charge the same price as all the fish and chip shops .chips to crispy and small looked like i got 6 bags of sausage and scraps no potatoes. I dont mind paying for less food if it is better food . The women that served me should of said sorry for wait just waiting on more chips rather then giving me scraps .

Always loved this chippy. But it's gone off recently. The chips are nice. But the cod is horrible. In fact it put me off buying fish from a chippy for a few month. And the cod has to much batter on it. The staff are nice and pleasant and pass the time of day with the regulars. The owners are clearly from down south and the son is so loud a gobby and acts like an out of work car salesman rather than a fish fryer. And his booming voice around the shop is not a pleasant experience. Someone earlier described it as the faulty towers of chippies. And I have to agree with that.

Comparing this to other chip shops this is quite low on quality, my fish was all batter and didn't get many chips. I got a garlic sauce that tasted a bit sour.

This place used to be the best fish and chip shop in town but the owners son is usually frying more often than not and when get is on the food is a bit 'hit and miss' , when his father is running the shop the food is excellent!The girls behind the counter are very good especially the lady with the ponytail and glasses who has been there for a while. She knows her customers and gives excellent service!

Chips were great, comparable to most proper chip shops. The amount received was not as generous as some other places I've been but not too bad; enough to satisfy though.

went late night shopping in Darlington last week and stopped in here on the way home, it was very busy considering it was 8 o clock, I'm glad we waited as we enjoyed the food a lot, sat in the car park and ate it and it was delicious

Not bad but then again not the best by far------called for the first time on sat------got fish and chips twice but on getting home found that the fish was not that good-------in fact did not look or taste like cod which we asked for,the curry sauce was probably the worst we have had------gen very disappointing---

Portions are tiny and will only use on very small occasions wen I'm walking by some Saturdays. They are lucky because only chippy in haughton if they had competition close by would be in big trouble! Staff are really friendly though☺

Used to come when I was at school in the late 80's. Had to try the Fish and chips for old times sake last time I was in Darlo. You never let me down. Still the same. Fab as usual.... Can't beat a Northern Fish supper....!

Anyone who reviews this less than excellent is being daft! Perfect fish and chips, VERY friendly staff who are helpful and a good laugh whilst you're waiting for your pineapple ring! Also the best pizzas in Darlington, the Big Tony's or Pappa Franks are personal favorites, but there is a great selection! Perfect for a night in or post night out chips, the only thing to complain about it is its not 24 hours! Can't get enough!

Always busy, so that speaks volumes, portion size is always good and cooked to order, just on our door step, so maybe a little to handy if we're watching the waste line.

Used to go in this chippy quite often as it was good chips and good portions, but portion sizes do vary and the prices you pay you get very little and the meal deals in my opinion don't save you much money at all if you added them up if you bought them individually, sadly will not be returning as it had gone down hill

My wife has just come back from getting food from this chippy and to be honest the standard of food is disgusting. Our order was jumbo sausage and chips with curried sauce and small sausage and chips. Quite a simple order really - curried sauce was like water with very little taste, and the chips over cooked. We will definitely not be using this chippy again !!

I always pop into haughton chippy on a visit home to darlo from Australia , you can't get past they're crispy non greasy batter on the fish and the chips , what can I say, miss them now I'm back home , wish they delivered to Sydney oz !!

My family and I moved to Darlington after 12 years away from the north east and after over a decade in the Midlands, one thing we missed was good fish and chips. Our first meal in our new home was a delivery from Haughton Chippy and it was simply the best chippy we have all tried... ever! I had battered haggis and chips, the rest of the family has fish patty and chips with our much missed "scraps" and we all loved it so much we had it 3 times in one week - each time was perfect and we now have it at least once a week! The deliveries are always prompt and the food is always hot. Can't rate this place high enough.

Had fish n chips here last night , chips were lovely not greasy! Fish was good too, meal was delivered and yes it was hot! Delivery driver was very polite and cautious well worth the money. Pizza is also very good I do recommend.

Food was rubbish, took ages to come and cost over £20 for something that would cost £10 in a normal chippy. Paid over £2 for small sausage n chips n there was 6 chips. NOT WORTH THE MONEY AT ALL!

Having frequented virtually all of darlingtons fine array of fish and chip shops both sober and not sober this is undoubtedly top of the tree. Always hot and fresh even when delivered which is where others fail to make the cut. Excellent pizzas. But if you are as meticulous about your diet as I am try the battered cheeseburger. Yes

I've recently stopped using the chippy. I personally think its gone off. The portion sizes vary between staff which is annoying. And when this is questioned the staff can be quite rude. And special offers for white van drivers are only available to van drivers on proof of white van. Which is ridiculous and when questioned the owner is very rude. It can be the faulty towers of fish and chip shops.

Don't need to say much other than best chips, best fish, best pizzas, end of. You will not be disappointed, and if you are then there is clearly something wrong with you. Enjoy!

I have twice ordered fish & chips & mussy peas to my door. Both times deliver very efficiently & quickly. I think there just about the best chippy in Darlington. Lovely fish cooked to order just the way you want it! I can highly recommend it.
