Love the food from this shop its the best one I have had in Scotland

We ordered a takeaway on a Friday night, expecting a long wait and were told an hour. After 1 hour 20 minutes we called to ask if the food was out for delivery, we were told the last dish was just being cooked and it would be 10 minutes. We ended up waiting a further 40 minutes for it to arrive. Shame this is the only Chinese takeaway in the area

We have ordered takeaway many, many times from you and we’ve always been happy. But tonight, delivery took 2 hours and for the first time, no prawn crackers. After an hour and a half, we called to chase and it was still being prepared. However, I can look past all that, but the food tonight was awful. Cold when it arrived and like it was from a different restaurant. New chef? New management? Different suppliers? Sorry, I cannot order food from you again. Disposable income is precious these days, so you guys need to get it right when customers spend money with you. Everyone has an off day, but when it makes you never want to order Chinese food every again, that’s a worry. This was so way off from your normal standard, it was disturbing. Sorry, but you need to look at the change and sort it out. I wish you luck.

A great takeaway! We have collected our meal a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed all the food we ordered. The gentleman who served me was courteous and the waiting area was comfortable. We will be back.

If I lived locally I would make this my regular go to takeaway. Had a really nice meal okay night and found the staff very friendly when picking up my food.

Happy Gathering is great. We’ve only ordered takeaway, but the food has arrived warm and delicious each time. I’m surprised that there are so many poor reviews. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the borders. Definitely recommend.

My wife’s family ordered a substantially sized takeaway from here a few weeks ago. I was part of this order but arrived to eat it later that night (well oiled). I was told my plate was empty at the end, so to that extent I have no complaints. Feedback from the family - the order was correct, fairly quick given that it was a Saturday and the food was well enjoyed! I expect us to order from here again in the near future.

Ribs were awful gloopy sauce! Sweet and sour chicken was dry Ordered noddles with beansprouts and no onion but received it with no beansprouts but full of onions! In the end the meal ended up in the bin! Won’t be back!

Not been to Happy G for a while and I have to say its not been a miss. Just had one tonight its came frozen and was just awful.🤢 Totally waste of money. The ribs did not taste like ribs the rice was all stuck together chips looked like there were last weeks. 🤢 Very disappointed and definitely won't be back.

So called chicken with h oyster sauce,,not!! the chicken was tastless very dissatisfied not worth the money,will not use again

I order a meal for one of my residents weekly 6pm Did not deliver it so I call and ask why she told me a story about driver been twice no answer and we left an answer on your machine Eh we don’t have a machine and nobody was at door we have cctv Lies and just disrespect this wee man looks forward to it every week it’s just disgusting 😡

Ordered some food to be delivered over the phone, the lady I spoke to was very friendly and helpful. As stated about 20 mins later my grub arrived. It was hot and jolly tasty. I also got a big bag of prawn crackers which I am munching as I type... Excellent all round.

Picked The Happy Gathering in Selkirk for a change from Gala and ordered mid evening on a Saturday through Just Eat who have a very easy no fuss system. No fuss with the order of indeed with the food which was tasty and well cooked. Massive servings too so we'll repeat the experience soon. Next time I'll make sure I've got adequate cash in the house so that I can show my appreciation of the friendly delivery driver. Nothing negative. great experience

A nice local chinese in the borders, great tasting food and so easy to pay as they now have a card machine! Definitely try this place.

I cannot fault the Happy Gathering. I have ordered a few different things off the menu on a number of occasions. They are good portion sizes and are good value for money. The quality is consistent and well above par. The owner is a nice pleasant lady who always chats to her customers. Very highly recommended.

Been for takeaway only, fast service and nice food for a good price.

I ordered a takeaway sirloin steak on Saturday evening, I could hardly cut into it far less chew it, I'm sure it wasn't sirloin, our dog got it the next day, dear dog food at £11. I ate the onions an mushrooms, I would advise anyone not to buy the steak as I was looking forward to it.

I asked for Salt & Pepper Chicken & Chicken Chow Mein with out Veg but after driving home I found out that they both had Veg and that the Chow Mein was not editable for me. No wonder they gave me free Prawn Crackers probably the only thing which was editable...

I wouldn't be giving them any stars if I could. I went in and orderd food. When the food was ready I noticed that the lady in the kitchen was wearing everyday clothes. I noticed she had some kind of flip flops on with socks but cropped trousers to her ankles. The kitchen was very messy and looked very dirty. I asked for a refund and the lady was confused at she didn't speak English. I myself as a chef was disgusted with what I had seen. She will not have the relevent quilification of health and hygiene regulation of a licenced premises. I find this utterly disgusting and have reported it to the authorities. I don't recommend anyone eat there.

The idea was to meet friends and enjoy a lovey evening, being wined / dined however we actually thought we had entered a stage set and expected Ant & Dec to jump out at any minute.. The warnings were there and we should have realised when we phoned to 'book' and the lad said he didn't need a name and didn't have a pen anyway... On entering we realised it was actually colder inside than outside in 8ft of snow.Picture one singe table set up in the corner with the other tables piled up on top of each other with cardboard boxes strewn all over them. No other guests, no music and less atmosphere than a funeral parlour. Yep, we should have run but we had to see what happened next. I assume the Chinese owner struggled with English so she kept away and left the table 'service' to a couple of local lads, who to be fair, were really nice lads, but awful waiters.. 'Do you have a bottle of Pinot Grigio'? .."Whats that"!! 'Ok for the guys we'll have a pint of lager and a lager shandy'....."Whats a lager shandy"!! Shortly followed by "Hmm, we don't have any lager but tell us what you want and we'll go and get some" .. Nice gesture and he meant well, even when he came back with two cans of Tennents and two small wine glasses to pour them into.... for gawds sake.. Having gone for the wine, he left his 'mate' to take the rest of the order, who sat down at the table wearing wellies, large sweater and bobble hat.. 'Do you work here'? "Naw, I,ve been snowed in for 3 days and kipping on his sofa until I can get home"... Oh right where do you live (thinking Inverness, Dundee or Glasgow) .. "Just Melrose"... priceless. It was even amusing when despite the fact there was 4 of us they brought 3 plates .." I dunno why I only have three plates"".!!.. It was even funnier when he brought over the prawn dish and just held it out and said " I don't know what this is"... Not funny though when he brought the 4th plate and handed it to one of the girls but only then said "careful its hot".. Hot.... she almost scalded her fingers..By this time we were looking for the hidden cameras and the TV crew.... but alas, this was real. this was our genuine dining experience. We managed though and laughed and talked whilst we waited for the missing rice and the two forks we asked for.. Having finished the meal, our host was straight over . " Have you finished. do you want your bill".. Can we just finish our drinks and maybe just consider coffee and.or dessert .. However we thought it best to cut and run and pay our bill but yep, you guessed it. "Sorry, we don't take cards. There's an ATM down the road".. We even laughed as we walked through the drifts and the bitting -5 wind as we went to get the money to pay for our incredible evenings entertainment. The food was ok but nothing special, however, whatever you do...please, do not ever, ever, book a table...that is unless you are game for a laff...

Helpful staff, and food is excellent!

I really don't want to give a bad review because the staff are so nice and friendly and helpful but, I'm afraid, the food just isn't up to the standard it used to be under the original management. The fried rice is claggy, tasteless and all stuck together with hardly any egg or soy sauce. The ham used in the special fried rice and Singapore dishes is tinned formed ham which has been diced and is really not very nice at all. Some of the sauces are almost powdery in consistency. Everything tastes sweeter than it should, and nothing tastes very, well, Chinese. It reminds me of some of the poor home cooked attempts at Chinese meals I've tried over the years. Such a shame because it used to serve really good (if pricey) Chinese food. I hope they will get back to the old standards soon because I'm desperate for some good local Chinese takeaway!

I had a takeaway last night and it wasn't as good as usual. It took an hour and a half which was half an hour more than quoted. They very kindly put chocolates in but they didn't react to the heat and there was melted chocolate all over the boxes containing the food. No prawn crackers or fortune cookies either.

The poor reviews did put us off, but we noticed most of them were complaining about delivery times. We eat in once and I had a takeaway which I collected: both times the food was well above average- tasty and fresh and came in a decent time, service in the restaurant was great. I also noted they were advertising for a delivery driver, so it looks like they're addressing that issue. Prices entirely reasonable too.

frequent quite a lot of chinese takeaways. have to highly commend the person taking my takeaway order - king prawn curry with mushrooms and boiled rice - she was polite efficient and friendly. the food was good, hot, and the curry sauce was good. (often find them rather watered down). certainly a 4/5 maybe even 4.5/5.

Chow Mein? Don'y know what the noodles were coated in but bad experience.

If we had read the recent reviews before going there last night we would have given the place a miss. For once am glad we didn't read them. Driving through the borders, grey and windy needed a food stop and fancied chinese. Had a look in Hawick but the restaurants were full of reserved tables so stopped in Selkirk on the way. Spotted the Happy Gathering which is at the far end of the town centre. Only one other table in use but the heating was on and the restaurant was warm. Maybe we were lucky. Pancake roll followed by a Special Chow Mein for me, with 6 chicken satay sticks and a Mushroom and King Prawn main course and fried rice, washed down with Tsingtao all served with a smile. Food was good and the serving for the Pancake Rolls is 2 pieces which are almost a meal in themselves. Reasonable prices, decent service and almost as important clean toilets. One wee complaint would be to turn the background music down just a tad. Would we stop there again... based on our experience from yesterday, Yes.

Seems to be only cook on duty, poorly staffed, the other person out delivering meals as well as cooks the as well, multi tasking. Can't save money by undercut staff, dear dear. Never again, give the place a miss. Waited 20 minutes

I ordered a takeaway on the telephone for collection - waited 50 mins for food. No apology for wait. Waiting room / restaurant was soo cold - I felt sorry for the desk staff, who had to heat her hands up with a cup of tea. I had four dishes plus sides and all were fairly disappointing. Do not recommend!

Sorry to say, under new management again, this Take away restaurant s not yet opertaing well. Ordering a Take away at 4.45 pm in the afternoon when open, for pick up at 6.30 pm, Still hadn`t been cooked and delivered at 7 pm. So order cancelled and money refund requested and we went elsewhere to get really efficient service. Whilst we were there we say a waiter using their hands, to fill glasses with ice for drinks, and the phone repeatedly going off, with the receptionist, having to repeatedly say the meal was on its way. Not a good advert for the type of restaurant. We won`t be back.

Was in to collect my order, surprised to see 2 kitchen staffs 1 packer, 1 counter cum waiter,this is on a Saturday night, get more staff in, can't cut overhead, they ruined the restaurant good reputation with cost cutting, pure cowboys, no wonder staff don't stay for long

We have eaten here on 3 occasions on the all you can eat offer. Really tasty, and hot, and good portions. Good value for money, Only negative point is the fact that it is cold in the restaurant, as heating is not put on until someone comes in to eat, and is a bit lacking in atmosphere as there were no other people there.Will definitely eat there again.

Ordered a takeaway at 615 pm tonight and was told it would be delivered at 7 pm. I offered to collect if it would be quicker but was assured delivery would be just as quick. It is now 1020 pm and after 3 phone calls to the Chinese, my order has still not arrived. Poor service!

We went on friday for their 'all you can eat' buffet. Only £14.99 each.Excellent food very attentive waiter.Only down side was lack of atmosphere. We were the only people in restaurant.Maybe needs more advertising.Having been to all restaurants in selkirk this , for us , was excellent good food lots and lots of choice and only 14.99.Have never tried delivery as we only live 5 mins away.

Order a takeaway from new menu but when it had not arrive we phoned after 1 hour and was told it was on its way.After another half hour it still had not arrived Phoned again to be told by a rude person that again it was on its way. After a further hour it still had not arrived so phoned up to be told if we did not like it then we could cancel it and tell delivery we did not want it. The takeaway eventually arrived after 3 hours but we told the delivery driver what the happy gathering had told us over the phone We then ordered another takeaway from a place in Galashiels and it arrived after 45 mins exactly the time they said it would.If this is the way that the Happy Gathering treat its customers then we will not be ordering from them again

We requested a delivery on Saturday night. After waiting a long 2 hours we phoned for a 3rd time and cancelled our order. Couldn't get over the attitude of the rude man, who just said tell the delivery person to bring it back, had also been curt when we first ordered. I spoke to a friend who also waited 2 hours for her meal. Advise to happy gathering.... be honest when people request a delivery and admit you have too many orders. Quit whilst the goings good. Maybe get someone else to answer the phone, who can be courteous to customers .

Restaurant was closed indefinitely for unspecified reasons so was only operating as a takeaway. Huge portion of really tasty food though.

Good food, although when i delivered it, it took nearly 2 hours to arrive. When it finally got here, the food was excellent.

Got the new menu through the door and it was so impressive we said we'd try asap even though we live out of town. Phoned in the afternoon to check if they delivered out here and the lady who answered was ever so helpful even though our postcode didn't come up. Food arrived on time, driver was courteous and food was piping hot. 3 starters and mains ordered but 2 bags of prawn crackers and fortune cookies thrown in. Cannot fault it for quality or quantity, particularly the duck. Will definitely use again. Well done guys

First of all I never write reviews but I'm annoyed as this was v expensive ordered a takeaway it came cold so I heat it up once opening n tasting I realise the noodles were like super noodles out a packet totally tasteless fried rice bland n dry chilli chips were crap my partner was disgusted as she had to pick the rotten bits out her meal n bin so cud only eat half .... We will never be back as the other chinese rocks and wish they delivered...

Placed an order here. It arrived and it was wrong. Phoned up to see if I could sort it out. I was expected to pay another delivery fee for an error by this takeaway restaurant!!

Ordering the food proved difficult as the staff didn't seem to know the menu. The delivery then arrived (one star for the lovely driver) and we were missing part of our order. Finally got through to someone and were told that the item wasn't on our original order - their mistake not ours. We were made to pay for the item that THEY had missed plus delivery (we live within a mile of them). Disgusting way to treat customer after YOU mess up their order. Will not be ordering again

We have used this carry out a lot over the past few years. Last carry our we had the pancake rolls were suspect and I had a bad stomach the next day. (will spare the sordid details). I am certain it was this that caused the upset as hubby had eaten the same as me all day apart from the pancake rolls. I felt at the time they were not right, but ate most of it as was hungry. Three months ago. Not been back since.

Used to be a favourite restaurant but unfortunately this part of the business has been closed for some time, still operating as a carry out though. We had a meal for five, five starters, five mains and five sides delivered, a tad expensive, but was worth it we felt, we all had different dishes, each of which was cooked to perfection and piping hot. Still the same high standards !

We eat from here regularly and have always enjoyed our meals. It does seems a little expensive when you look at the menu but you get such a huge portion you will have enough left over for at least lunch the following day.

I order the same thing each week with the same sides and love it. Don't know what I'd do without it. Never have anything bad to say about it!

First time visit and also the last. After opening my food (which was pretty expensive to start off with) I realised that the 'Crispy Shredded Chicken' was more 'Sloppy' and 'Wet'. My dish also included Water Chestnuts, which were black with either mould, being burned or turning bad. For being a pretty expensive dish I was also surprised to see frozen peas poured in there. I had lucky ordered 'Spicy Chips' with the dish, which was what me and my partnered shared for our meal, but were basically oven chips with pepper, which I could have made myself at home for half the price. Will not be returning!! Waste of money.

We got a carry out after finding the restaurant closed due to it being low season (understandable). We took our carry out to our B&B The Croft who very kindly set the table at a moments notice. Thank you Jean

Ordered a takeaway for family gathering and was really nice on all accounts... Would recommend based on the sweet n sour chicken and the curry that was purchased...

Absolute disgrace.. There crispy shredded chicken mays well be chicken goujons chips half cooked and the most pathetic amount of batter on there prawns... no happy no the 1st time my meal has been crap out of there

The Best Chinese Food In Selkirk. Try the Special Fried Rice and prawn crackers! Almost as good as Haggis!

No sit in meals at present however their food is excellent and a great take away service. Try the Singapore Noodles!!!

We really enjoyed our meal at the Happy Gathering in Selkirk. We stayed nearby at Whitmuir Hall and went to the Happy Gathering during our week stay in Selkirk. The staff were very attentive, cheerful and enthusiastic and the food was of a very good quality. We would definitely recommend this place.
