Perfectly cooked fish and chips

Just ‘eaten’ of Friday dinner. Fish was awful….must have been standing some time. Chips are dry and overcooked. Really gone downhill here

Lovely little chippy opposite a petrol station. Excellent wide menu to please most appetites, which includes desserts and even ice cream. The service was positive and helpful, especially commendable was the eagerness to rectify an error (on a VERY large order). There is even off street parking, which is quite unusual for a chippy. I can highly recommend this takeaway.

Moved to Colchester recently and so happy we found this little fish and chip shop! The cod is the best we have ever had. Amazing batter. The large cod is great value. Chips are perfect too. Highly recommend

Tried for the first time a few weeks ago and was not disappointed. I placed an order 15 minutes before closing and staff were really accommodating despite my late notice! The food was delicious, prices good and portion sizes were great. This is our go-to chippy now :-)

If you like good food give this place a miss. Appallingly cooked chips. Although quire impressive to see how much oil a piece of potato can be made to absorb. Fish might have been fresh once but not this year. They stay in business somehow but it won't be with my money ever again. Just awful.

Chips were cooked in old oil and while the fish was ok the the batter was dripping in oil. Ate it because I was very hungry and then immediately regretted it.

People in the shop were very polite, the cod I had was excellent, and I would highly recommend . Will be back soon!

I had lots of chip scraps in with my chips and chips not crispy. Battered sausage very nice. Hubby enjoyed his fish n chips.

Kabouter reed🚙 door de dorpjes vanaf Wales en Cambridge naar Harwich en na 4 uur sturen beetje toe aan rust. Via Haverhill rustig sturen kom je dit CHIPPY tegen. 🤣🤷‍♂️Met 3 pond 🤣aan boord niet veel keus. Voor en in de CHIPPY was het druk met auto's en mensen voor een Saturday evening meal. Toen Kabouter aan de beurt was vroeg de enthousiaste leuke medewerkster of alles ok was en wat ik wilde bestellen. Och zei ik een simpel chippy. Kabouter sprokkelde alle losse pounds en pence in zakje op en kon nog wat mayo bijkopen. Heeeeeerlijke chips zitten eten op mijn stoel aan de kant van de weg. Ik heb heerlijk gegeten en gezeten en dit CHIPPY en kom volgende x met reis Harwich weer terug om heerlijk te smikkelen😋🤣 Hele goede CHIPPY met hele enthousiaste lieve medewerkers. Top .👌👍👍🏆

Always amazing fish & chips from Happy Fries. We recently thought we’d try a different (very popular for some unknown reason) fish & chip van because it was closer to our house and let me tell you…we won’t be doing that again. Happy Fries do the flakiest cod, in the crispest batter and always cook their chips so they are nice and brown without grease dripping all over the place. Well worth the extra drive for!!

Biggest cod I’ve ever seen. Chips a bit soggy. Pleasant servers. Card payment not accepted under £10, which is odd! The customer area needs a clean.

I will never purchase again after having the worst chips ever. I visited @ 5.45pm on Thursday 16th June and clearly was given warmed up chips from an earlier period. Horrible hard dry chips!!I chucked most away. They need to try Mick's fish & chips Sudbury to see how freshly cooked chips will taste. A very dissatisfied customer. Tony Thomson

It's our closest chippy to West Bergholt, and always excellent. If I had to travel further to find better, I would, but there's no need. Never disappoints.

A great fish & chip shop, portion size is perfect for us and we have always been very happy with the quality of the food, much better than surrounding establiments. Its also got ample parking which is handy, we always pre order so there is never any waiting around. The staff are very friendly, we won't go anywhere else now we have found this little gem 👍🏻⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Went today ordered a medium portions of chips at 1800 on a Friday night. Had to wait 15min for them. I’ve never seen a place work so so slowly! Medium portion was v v small, not joking like a child’s portion for £1.90. Not sure why the wait and slowness. Staff working at snails pace and disorganised. Also minimum payment on card at £10 during covid! Thought we were trying to reduce transmission. You need to do way better! Never seen a chip shop operate like this

By far the best chip shop I've had in Colchester. Was driving past at lunch time and fancied something naughty, stopped here for a cheeky sausage in batter and chips. The young lady that served me was so polite and professional the order only took a few minutes, then boom! The taste explosion of a proper battered sausage, not like the processed ones you get at some shops. Fresh crispy and battery goodness! Will be returning ❤️😁

Just had saveloy and chips and battered sausage and chips , food was delicious ! Chips were cooked lovely which is always hit or miss but this place def hit! Along with curry sauce def recommend , great lunch for cold wet day 😊👍

Worst fish and chips I’ve had possibly ever, chips were brown and soggy as if fat hasn’t been changed in days, not hard to provide good fish and chips if it’s r only thing your sell I would have thought, batter was very over cooked.

The worst fish and chips I have ever had. I asked for lightly cooked fish and it was crispy and burnt when opened up the paper full of think fat every where. The fat had even gone through the paper. looked like it was the day before fish and just reheated it tasted horrible . You just couldnt eat it. The lady in the shop rapped it up before she told me it was mine. I was sitting down at that time so I couldn't see what she had served up. The chips were soggy and not nice we dont eat a lot of chips but this was supposed to be a medium portion it was just enough for a baby. 2 large cod and 1 medium chip £13. Something. Wish i had taken a photo . We will not be returning again.

Really efficient and very friendly service. Staff always pleasant and smiling. Fish and chips tasty and in good sized portions. Oil fresh. If you ring up before hand they will have your meal ready for you. Parking directly outside shop is handy, but there is also ample parking in the adjacent road.

When we moved to the area this is the first place we went to whilst moving in 6 years ago and have been going ever since for fish and chips. Having lived up north for 21 years where the fish batter is always crispy and southern fish batter is more often than not wet, it was great to find this shop with crispy fish batter. Always fresh and tasty and great chips, we sometimes have the curry sauce and have also tried the Chinese curry again very nice. Would defiantly recommend and we will be back again.

I live five minutes walk from this chip shop and its always bloody closed! Then to make it worse walked in there tonight and they were actually out of chips! This would be acceptable if their chips weren't. Hit miss or maybe!

Best fish and chips I can ever remember having. Fish didon't have any skin on it and the chips are wonderfully crispy would highly recommend it

Great food everytime. Chips are crispy and fuffly. Batter is light and not oily. Fish is meaty and juicy. They also offer a range of fish alternative. Must try the chicken wrap and their curry sauce! Staff are very dedicated and very welcoming, its never too much to ask for anything extra. Reasonable price. So glad we found a place like this in our local area.

If you like fish and chips, then you must try this place. As far as I know this is about the only place that remove the shin from the fish before it is battered. The portion is generous although they are not the cheapest place if this nature.
