Halfway House in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

The 5 stars are for the staff and service. Unfortunately I prefer home made roasts over frozen. When you do a 3 meat carvery the customer should be allowed to have a bit of each if requested not told No only 2 slices allowed. That’s the whole point of a carvery. It’s a lovely place with lovely staff, I’d just recommend using fresh ingredients over frozen as they have much more flavour. Just constructive criticism no offence intended 🤩

Lovely staff really helpful and enjoyed the food. The best thing was our dog was allowed in to sit under the table which was great

Smell on entering was pure urine from uncleaned toilets. Potatoes in the carvery was just skin as they had been out for hours. I like a bit of beef in a carvery however it was past very well done/burnt. Service was OK but the smell on entering put me off straight away with very unhygienic toilets.

Called in for a lovely lunch at this dog friendly pub. Lovely place, friendly staff, really good menu - something for everyone. Would definitely recommend. Lasagne was lovely as was mixed grill.

So it was very quiet when we went so only 3 stars for the atmosphere. Although it said on their website cavery Wednesdays and Sundays, sadly they don't. However, they did a platted roast for my wife with loads of turkey, so she was happy. The waitress also seated us by the window with lovely fairy lights round it so very romantic. Wish i found this place sooner.

Will not be using this Pub again during our stay in area. I do not know if usual chef was on duty Mondäy evening but the Scampi was overcooked and dry, almost like reconstituted fish and the pastry on the steak pie was thin and extremely thin and hard so that when trying to cut it it broke and shattered rather than cut cleanly, the meat inside was fine and quite tasty. Not surprised it was not recommended in the cottage handbook despite it being relatively close.

Ok really don't like to give a bad review, our table was broken, there wasn't enough meat, the meat was dry, the potatoes were dried out, the Yorkshire puddings were too crispy but the veg was good. Table service and dessert were very good. Good range of beers and wines. It has gone downhill a bit since the summer. I hope it will turn around soon. PS I saw the table 2 down from us, the fish and chips do look fab.

Food was good, would of given 5* but me and my partner went for the veggie butternutsquash and lentil Wellington but when we went up to plate it mine hadn't been put in the oven and had to sit down and wait 10 minutes while my partner ate her meal. not ideal for a date.

Very good quality food at reasonable prices

First visit, was looking forward to a birthday carvery. Firstly the waitress was polite. The carvery, disappointing. All the meat was hard, the vegetables were soggy, the roast potatoes were hollow and tasted like they had been cooked yesterday or the day before, parsnips crazy burnt one end hard the other. No mash potatoes. Maybe this was a bad day for them or maybe this is the norm but overall a very disappointing visit one which we will not be repeating.

Another fabulous visit to the Halfway House. Friendly staff, good beer and superb food. Don't just believe me, go try it for yourself and thank me later.

Lovely pub, good food, smashing service. Roadworks both restricted access and provided entrainment while we were there! 😂

We had an excellent Carvery today. Highly recommended.

Be very careful what drink you choose when going for the lunch deal. Pint of shandy is included, half a pint is not. Avoid the steak sandwich unless you have very strong teeth and like it well done! Won't be going back anytime soon 😢

Been coming to Half Way House since I was a child. On Saturday my husband and I celebrated our 39th Wedding Anniversary with a meal.It has changed hands afew times over the years but my husband and I enjoyed our meal. Hubby had gammon and I had fish cakes. Cooked to perfection. Followed by crumble and custard. Staff were friendly and prompt with service. Reasonably priced and good servings. See you again soon!

Called on a damp Saturday afternoon. Place very quiet with only one or two others eating hence the atmosphere wasn't great. However the staff were very friendly and helpful and our meal was OK. On previous visits we have found things more lively, so perhaps we had picked the wrong day/ time. On the up side,we'll behaved dogs are welcome.

It was fairly quiet on the Tuesday evening we went for a meal, but the staff were ultra friendly, the food was fantastic and we had a range of different meals including gluten free in our party and everyone was raving about their meal, highly recommended.

Lovely Carvery. Three choices of Small, Medium and Large plates. We went with Medium- two slices of meat. However that was really good, but had too much and couldn't eat it all which was a shame. Definitely recommend

Friendly service and tasty food

Was very disappointed, we ordered the £9 meal deal and asked what the soft drinks were that was included in the deal only to find what we were told was not included so my meal ended up at £12. They also got my order wrong I asked for the battered fish and was given the fish finger sandwich, which wasn't even on the deal . They replaced it but the chips were so over cooked that there was nothing inside them but fresh air ... more like crisps. Then while we were finishing our drinks the waitress came over and in her words said I'm just warning you that we close at 3 , it came across as abrupt and unprofessional. I will not be back anytime soon .

Food sounds much nicer on the menu than it tastes.

We visited on a Saturday evening, food was great, portions a little large but good quality. Good variety on the menu, very clean, plenty or parking

Pub closes at 3pm but turns you away at 2:10-2:20. Because they’ve closed the kitchen. May want to change your closing time to 2pm. Waste of a journey.

Staff very attentive. We were a last minute big booking and accommodated us.

Bitterly disappointed with our experience, my partner ordered the turkey and leek pie with mash and I ordered shepherd's pie . My partners arrived with no mash and cold veg and my veg also cold . Questioned waitress and asked for the missing mash but never materialised . For the money spent portion size was meagre to say the least . Overall really poor from the Halfway House , certainly won't rush back

Good choice of food on the menu. The venison and bacon pie was tasty and my wife enjoyed her southern fried chicken burger. I recommend the onion rings as an extra. The Merlot was a nice one and the pinot grigot was crisp. Super background music, not too loud so we could chat. As with most pubs around here dogs were allowed. I thought the prices were very reasonable.

We went for my brothers birthday yesterday and felt extremely rushed. We were made to make a split decision about what we wanted to eat within a minute of sitting down and couldn’t greet my family without the waitress standing there waiting for a decision. The same thing happened when ordering desert we had just finished eating and again didn’t have 5 minutes to choose what we wanted and when we did choose, all of the deserts came out at very different times and they took my partners plate off the table while he was still eating because my desert came out about 15 minutes before everyone else’s. Food was amazing would highly recommend but unfortunately couldn’t have barely any conversation, i would understand if busy but there was around 6 tables the same time we were there.

Brilliant staff went all out to provide all 10 of us with excellent service ..food was delicious. Complimented the chef , she knows her stuff when it comes to gluten / dairy allergies and dietary requirements.. We will definitely be back . Well done to all the staff for making our family meal absolutely brilliant

Ten of us booked to celebrate my Son’s and my birthdays. The service was excellent and the food was out of this world. I loved the friendly atmosphere from staff and customers, with the added pleasure of dogs being allowed in the bar. I recommend completely for everyone, both like us who live locally and those who are travelling from further afield. Many, many thanks to all of you for a fantastic eating/drinking house!

Decided to go out for carvery for an early Mother’s Day as can’t be together next week. Food excellent. Staff were very helpful and attentive especially with regards to my grand daughter’s dietary needs.

We went for lunch on a Saturday...must say it was a great pub with options other than standard pub classics. Had a good 2 hour lunch with family and dog .

Loved it, looking forward to returning for the Carvery

A lovely roadside pub with a wonderful array of choice on the menu. Very reasonably priced food, choices range from off the grill to Asian infusion. I had the Pork Belly bites for starter which were gloriously delicious! And a Steak Sandwich with fries. Everything was cooked beautifully and our gang of 5 had a wide range of dishes and were all very happy with their meals.

Just feel the quality of food has slipped… I mean if you go out for a Sunday roast you want fresh potatoes not some type of aunt Bessie‘s roasties ! The veg wasn’t nothing to boast about and the meat was just like ok. Spent nearly £110 on my family and came away disappointed…..

It was very pleasant, food was good, the Yorkshire pudding was amazing. To be critical, I felt they could have been more generous with their meat (2 thin slices) and crackling (one small piece about 50pence size). It was also very cold where we were sat. Overall , not bad, I think quite reasonable for the money but could be improved upon. Staff were very friendly

Shame, but it wasn't a good experience. Pre- booked every meal, arrived on time, food being served an hour and a half later. Three orders wrong, one order still being cooked when everyone else had nearly finished. Staff were doing there best but I think they were just overwhelmed with two large groups being booked for the same time. Shame, as my friend had been recently and was full of praise. They need to take more care with the bookings.

What a warm and friendly place this is. Service was exceptional. I arrived at the end of service, enquired if they were still serving, they had begun closing down but took my order and served my food. BLT with chips 🍟 😋 scrumptious. The atmosphere was relaxed with soft Christmas 🎄 music playing in the background. They were holding a Christmas event for a large group of ladies, all of whom seemed to enjoy themselves.

Carvery, this evening not as good as last month. Meat, beef quite tough.Vegetarian option from menu, not good, chips salty and tasted as though heated up. Halloumi plus chips burnt.

I have been looking for good food at reasonable prices close by where I live and this place offers by far the best. Lovely welcome, great service and fabulous food.

Went for the carvery today and so glad we did.. Absolutely worth it in every respect. Staff are lovely and the food was delicious, best value for money we've seen in a long time. Wish we could have sampled dessert but there was no room left in our bellies !! We'll be back again and will definitely recommend it to family and friends, in fact I already have 😉

Carvery was fantastic. Lovely food and great service, the new owners have made a huge improvement to the pub. Definitely going back for the carvery.

Just had lunch here. They do a deal with a drink for a pound if bought with a lunch meal but we pushed the boat out and had main meal each. Very tasty and reasonably priced.

Lovely pub atmosphere and decor, pie and mash was good but would've been better with seasonal veg (personal preference) steak not so good was very chewy and full of gristle. Puddings were great especially cookie dough and ice cream. Service was great to start, but did feel like we'd been forgotten after our desserts were given to us.

Ok this is another update, having not visited since the new management have taken over. I decided to give it another go. The place was brighter and airer than before, and staff were very attentive the drab and dreary pictures on the wall were gone hooray. You know what's coming next lol, we were guided to our table and asked what drinks we would like, with the statement " I shall get your drinks if your having a carvery I will let you know when you can go to the counter, yippee a carvery instead of a roast. The girl arrived with our drinks and stated the carvery was available if we would like to go up. Uh oh this is where it fell apart a bit the chef was there and stated " if you would like beef it will be another 30 minutes as we've just had a rush on" and she smiled saying we have this slice of beef if you want but all else we have is Turkey. My wife generously said " take the beef as I just want Turkey" so I did and moving along the counter I found there were no roast potato's! My wife asked if there were some coming and duly someone came from the kitchen with a fresh tray, imagine my surprise tho when trying to lift the roasties out if the tray they were crisp on top but mushy underneath. By now I was thinking of forgetting the whole idea, but as I was being moved along by wife I thought better lol. So now I'm heading for the cauliflower cheese ( which was the reason my wife wanted to go for ) ummm there was only a spoonful left. This time I let the wife ask to which she was told " we will get some out of the kitchen, can you imagine my wife's thoughts when they brought out a tray of CHEESY LEEKS! If you've read this far I thank you and I leave you to decide for yourself. Mine is this the food is good if its AVAILABLE lol

Just met my aunt for some supper, which we always do when she visits Cornwall, and this time was the halfway house that we ate at. Food most enjoyable, service excellent and a very pleasant atmosphere, we will probably come again,and will recommend anyone to eat here. A definite 5 stars. Thank you

The carvery was worth the stop. We did not book but stopped on speck Sunday lunch so glad we did. The even accommodated the dog she had a small lunch under the table and an ice cream to follow all the staff were helpful and very friendly when in the area again we will be going back five stars all round

We booked a table in advance, but arrived earlier than antispated. They were very welcoming and were able to seat us earlier. The pub/restaurant gives of a modern but perfect traditional British pub feel. We were sorted with drinks and food very quickly. They had kids menus with good options and the food was a very good portion too. I had the carvery and I can say it has definitely lived up to the expectations that were shared on here. The homemade cauliflower cheese was emotional, all the meats cooked to perfection. Nice fresh potatoes, a good range of nice fresh sauces too. Absolutely amazing. The desserts were also absolutely fantastic. Toilets are lovely and clean also. Will happily come back

We reached late in evening & just had few drinks , as no food was available on late Sunday evening… but great family atmosphere… lots of families enjoying drinks & games …
