Hakka-San in Chesterfield

dreadful spent good money on a takeaway , was bland, tasteless, poor quality all round, feel gutted that you spend hard earned money on a meal which hasn't been prepared as nicely as you would expect, must be improved, sorry to submit this poor review

We have been going here for years, used to be Hakka San now called Hoy Sam, possibly has new owners or different staff. The quality and quantity used to be amazing with really tender beef and pork and quality chicken. However, the last 3 times we have been it has been a total contrast, the beef has become tough and chewy and the pork really fatty, even the chicken is not so tender now. Also the quantity you get has been reduced by at least half as much. My wife and I used to share a chicken fried rice and a beef or pork chow mein between us and have plenty but not anymore. After years of enjoying what was the best Chinese takeaway for many miles around, we have decided enough is enough!

We always have special fried rice but there was no prawns in it. Great pity. As this place been taken over?

Wow changing the name form Hakka San to Hoy San must have been expensive. Same meal but the prices have gone up over a third with the new name compared to the old name. Dynasty it is for us in the future. It’s nice food at HS (not as good as Dynasty) but the price certainly leaves a nasty taste in your mouth

Now reopen post Corvid closure. So it's telephone orders only and its cash only. Excellent service phone answered immediately and collected fifteen minutes later. The quality as always brilliant. Good screens in the shop. Welcome back.

The best takeaway we’ve been to! Very helpful and by far the tastiest food in chesterfield. Some of the family are vegan and the staff are very good at making sure we get what we need.

It's a take away so don't go down the atmosphere route......if by that you mean are they friendly .....YES. If by that are they accommodating.....YES.......has the food always been hot, on time,tasty,etc YES......before Hakka SAN the family had a restaurant on loundsley green.......if you know your CHesterfield Chinese....you know which one I'm talking about.....so I guess I've been fed by this family for over 40 yrs.......and I keep returning..........so follow your nose and give it a go..........the ribs are always to die for.....chicken chow mein similar

Been here twice now for a takeaway and enjoyed all our meals. Cardboard container fell over in the car and the lids aren't that good, so best keep hold. Would go back again.

A long story..... Two weeks ago we short ordered, not a problem as they offered to give refund the amount when we next ordered. Two weeks later we place our order reminding the server that we are due a chicken balls (free), the server checks with the bosses and then explains that we have already received the free chicken balls on the day after we originally placed the order. The conversation continued however the bosses and servers refused to accept the refund, I tried to explain that we normally only have one Chinese a weekend so we had not received the refund. At this point I did say that I wasn’t satisfied with the response and would provide a review on trip advisor stating the fact that we felt short changed! Thirty minutes later we arrive to pick up the order to be told that the order hadn’t been accepted and our business was not welcome at the establishment - as a loyal customer of 4 years spending £25/£30 per week and fully expecting to collect a meal for the family I was extremely put out. I have to say the food is consistently good however I was very disappointed in the customer service received although we did receive a £5 refund for the missed dish however sadly no food to feed the kids!

This is an excellent take away with a twist. You can see your food being prepared as the kitchen is open, fresh vegetables and plenty of selection, suited me just fine being vegetarian. I only wish they did Tofu. My husband has the meat dishes and is always very satisfied, our go to takeaway.

Salt and chill chicken = not spicy or tasty. Shredded crispy beef in chilli sauce = way too sweet and the meat was very tough. Chicken curry = very bland indeed. Went once, wont be going back. Gave 2 stars because the portion sizes are very good, only go if you're really hungry!

Not especially fast but rally tasty freshly prepared Chinese food that's worth waiting for. Fairly standard menu done well and served with a smile. They were busy when we went & there was a 30 minute wait but we weren't disappointed. This is a cash business so either come prepared or take the waiting time to pick up shopping & cash from Morrisons opposite. Definitely recommend the salt & pepper chips.

The food here is excellent. It is all freshly made with fresh vegetables and the meat is of really good quality. Best Chinese takeaway in my opinion.

The best by far amazing flavours quality ingredients great service we loved it will return shortly. Not realised what we were missing.

After eating many meals from what we thought was an excellent take away. We had a batch of really bad, chewy, ribs. We phoned up to advise and complain, because normally they were superb. We were asked at 9.30pm to DRIVE back with them!!! We explained that it was impossible as we had the kids and everyone was now settled in pyjamas and both adults had had wine. We were then assured that next time we were in, they’d replace the ribs. Well guess what-they DON’T recall the conversation and won’t replace the ribs or give a refund as they didn’t see them... I tell you what as a trained chef, I couldn’t believe the attitude and lack of respect to customers. To then be told that THEY had lost money????!!!!! WTF! We were the ones who weren’t able to eat what we’d paid for!!!! I thought a restaurant or take away would be glad of constructive feedback, not just dismiss loyal paying customers... so look out folks because just like basil in Fawlty Towers-this manager expects you to bring back or up anything inedible as proof... disgusting customer service!!!!

Several visits now and become our favourite go to place for Chinese takeaway by far. The food is just excellent hot tastie not to be beaten. Service is polite and service speedy. Get yourself to this one give it a try.

This is our favourite Chinese ever. Would highly recommend as over the many times we have ordered, we have tried many different dishes and enjoyed them all! We personally never bother with starters as we would rather buy an extra main as they are so tasty, with plenty of meat or chosen main ingredient and are good value for quantity, flavour and quality.

Actually incredible! I love the fact there’s a lot of vegetables that aren’t soggy but not too crunchy, also the fact that the noodles aren’t greasy or feel fattening

Rang our order through all ready in 10 minutes. Excellent starter plater. Crispy chilli beef gorgeous. Sweet & Sour king prawn plentiful.

Looks clean and tidy a good first impression. Only tried a few things on the menu so far in three visits. Everything has been excellent and fully intend to keep going back. Plenty of phone orders being placed I feel is always a sign of a good meal and despite being busy the service is good and meals prompt.

a staple for my saturday night. only downfall is no delivery but its worth it. very good quality. happy.

We are recently in love with Chinese food and this is one of the best ever had. Genuine ingredients. Mixed starter, beef and mushroom (great quality of meet), chow mein king prawn, rice with chicken. Forget gelly Chinese food. First quality, really.

This is our regular spot for a Chinese takeaway. We really enjoy the food as it has a fresher, more home made taste than many other Chinese takeaway establishments. We usually go for belly pork (always tender and succulent), chilli beef (plenty of chopped dried chillis), sweat and sour chicken (big battered chunks) and veg chow mein (plenty of fresh stir fried veg). Service is spot on too.

Crispy chilli beef prob the best ive tasted from a takeaway. The egg rice was noce and fluffy, the chips was nice but i wasnt keen on the sweet and sour it tasted a little too much like one you would get from iceland.Thats just my opinion on that. Overall a nice meal cant wait to try a different dish.

Limited menu but what they do they do well several takeaways from here now and every one v good Salt and pepper squid and the BBQ ribs highly recommended

Since opening their meals are consistently the best quality Chinese i have had. as a keen cook myself, i tend not to have takeaway as normally they can be greasy and bland but not here. fresh vegetables, amazing tastes and my god the portions are big. The only downside is that they only take cash but as Morrisons are just over the road, its not too much of an issue. i really dont normally write reviews but i do feel that this deserves one and recommend Hakka San to to anyone that asks

I'm not a huge Chinese fan. Very often too bland and samey and when we'd found a good curry house nearby it seemed a risk.

I have used Hakka-San many times and have always found the food to be excellent. The portions are big (enough for two meals) and the staff are very polite. The food is prepared quickly and 15 minutes is the longest I have had to wait. The menus are available online and so 'phoning your order through makes sense as they do not offer a delivery service.

There are plenty of Chinese take-aways in Chesterfield, all very much of the same standard i.e. pretty much British/Chinese junk food (No Chinese person would be seen dead eating there) The Hakka San aims to be a cut above this depressing norm and thankfully comes close to achieving a decent standard of takeaway food; One feature of the establishment is the relative briefness of the menu. I regard this as a good thing. I'd much rather have the choice of a few dishes done well than an extensive list of various combinations all equally mediocre, The place is also immaculately clean, both front of house and the kitchen which can be seen from the counter. The staff are polite, efficient and immaculately dressed in whites.

Love this takeaway, the food is always well prepared and very tasty with generous portions and if you like it a little different all you have to do is ask and they will prepare as you like, we always have the crispy chicken with chilli sauce but have the sauce separate as allows the kids to add as much as they want.

We love this take away. The quality is excellent and the food is very tasty. The service is also always excellent. What we like the most is how different and fresh the food is to most other take aways. Love Hakka San!

Whilst this chinese is a bit more expensive than the norm, you pay for what you get. The meat portions are huge and everything is of a fantastic quality. I would absolutely recommend this chinese over any other. Great service and great food.

Firstly the food is good but boy they need to up their service. When they say 15 mins it means 30 etc etc. never on time but good food. Limited menu however and would like to see more. Not the cheapest place but they do fantastic chilli beef.

Tried this place twice, the first time the food was excellent and we were looking forward to visiting again, more later. The sweet and sour chicken was really nice, lightly fried battered, large chicken breast pieces and a separate portion of sauce and chips, all cooked to perfection. The staff/owners are really friendly, the premises being modern and clean. We were really pleased with ourselves having found a great place to pick up a takeaway after a few drinks around Brampton. However, on the second visit and ordering the same dish it couldn't have been more different, unfortunately as its a takeaway the quality of the food isn't known until you unwrap it at home. The fried chicken pieces had been fried to death, dark in colour and slightly bitter, the fat tasted like it had been burnt, definitely over cooked as the chicken inside very dry. The chips were also poor. This appeared to be close to the closing time, we had rung in the order before we left the bar and it was ready for us to collect. If you are the owners and read this thinking why didn't I return to complain then think again, you are the ones cooking the food, it was plain to see it had been effectively burned/overcooked and yet knowing this you still wrapped it up knowing full well that the likelihood of a complaint from a evening drinker was slim. Added to this the takeaway was not listed on trip advisor and so it has been added. This has resulted in an average score which is more than fair, given the inedible food the second time round. If you visit this takeaway the only advice I can give is that from experience there is a 50% chance that food will be excellent but if you open it before taking it home, try a bit and you might be able to increase the chances of being given good food, not practical I know but a must if the restaurant can't be trusted not to wrap up burnt food. A big shame as we really thought we had found somewhere different and nice. Hopefully this is a one off but I'm not sure that we will risk it again as we always vote with our feet.
